Name: Tracy Magie Age: 49 Place of Employment: Sullivan County BOCES Central Business Office (CBO) Current Title and Duties: Principal Account Clerk overseeing accounts payable, purchasing, payroll and attendance at BOCES. I develop ways to streamline procedures within each function and implement cross training so that each staff member can perform their function for any district we support. I also support the CBO business manager with staff attendance and reviews, as well as resolving the daily occurrences and issues that districts may have or rely on us to help resolve. Tracy Magie diversity of working with 15 coworkers and eight school districts. I appreciate the ability to learn something new every day and use it towards growth within the organization. Most Challenging Part of Your Job: Finding enough hours in the day to support the daily operation while squeezing in moments of professional development and growth. When I am faced with a challenge, I ask myself “What would my mother do?” My mother is Pat Bullock, retired Deputy County Clerk, who retired from the county in 1996 and to this day I meet people who tell me that she was the best boss they ever had. That says a lot. I model myself after her, professionally and personally. Favorite on-the-job moment: After the first year the CBO was formed, I was asked to speak in front of representatives from every district in the county at the BOCES Annual Meeting and explain the purpose,
goals and accomplishments of the CBO. Also, I’m proud of all that we’ve accomplished here at the CBO regarding implementation, streamlining of procedures and cross training so that the districts we serve know that regardless of staffing, they will get the best possible service. The CBO has doubled in size since it was rolled out four years ago, which means that districts see the value in the service provided. That’s a great feeling. Education: Fallsburg Central High School; SUNY Delhi Professional Certifications: SAMPO (State Association of Municipal Purchasing Officials) How do you spend your spare time: Visiting my grandkids upstate and going to concerts. Favorite Vacation Spot: Ireland Family: Husband, Edward, two daughters, three grandkids

Favorite part of your job: I like the challenge! My days often include unexpected issues and problems and finding solutions or new and better ways of getting the job done can be very rewarding. We have a great staff at Mike Preis, Inc. and I enjoy working with our team. Most challenging part of your job: Keeping up with technology. The landscape is constantly changing and there are always new programs and devices that can help us better serve our customers. I have run four computer conversions over the years, moving the agency onto more advanced platforms to better serve our customers and I am currently researching several upgrades. Favorite on-the-job moment, customer or memory: Far too many to choose from! I don’t work directly with customers anymore because what I do is mostly behind the scenes, but I still remember quite a few of my customers from my early
days with the agency. People often view insurance as a necessary evil, but we have the privilege of being able to help our customers when they need help the most. We can help them file a claim and receive payment that will allow them to put their lives back together. Professional certifications: NYS Brokers license Favorite movie: My Cousin Vinny Favorite actor/actress: I don’t know… Tommy Lee Jones, Helen Hunt… I have a long list of movies I haven’t had a chance to see yet! How do you spend your spare time: I don’t have a lot of spare time, but whatever time I have, I enjoy spending time with my family or curled up with a good book. Favorite vacation spot: The Beach! There’s nothing better. Family: I am blessed to have an amazing family. My husband, Doug, of 19 years, my son, Brian, who always makes me proud, and my two
daughters, Alexa and Marissa, who are completely different from each other, and yet both perfect in their own way. Civic or volunteer affiliations: I am a director on the board of the Delaware Youth Center and I am honored to be part of such an important organization. My children have all learned to swim in the pool, played on the playground, learned to play soccer in the fields, skateboarded in the park, and attended countless parties, holidays, and celebrations. I’m happy that my family and I are able to give back to the Delaware Youth Center and our community. One of my projects is the Delaware Youth Center 5K River Run – it’s Sunday, July 19th this upcoming year, so mark your calendars! Christina Kurpil Jones STORY AND PHOTO BY ELI RUIZ
Name: Christina (Kurpil) Jones Age: 49 Place of employment: My sister Jen’s house Current title and duties: My current title is Aunt Chrissy and my duties include loving my 2-year-old nephew with all my heart and receiving unconditional love in return. Years at current employer: 2 Favorite part of your job: I love playing with my nephew. Watching him grow up from an infant to a little man is such a gift. Because I have not been able to have children of my own, I truly cherish the time I have with other people’s children especially my own nieces and nephews. Most challenging part of your job: I guess I would have to say going home without a child of my own is probably the most challenging part of having a job that involves children. Though I love the time spent with my nephew, there is always a little missing piece in my heart. I think any woman that cannot bring a child into the world that truly longs to be a mother, probably has the same feelings. Favorite on-the-job moment, customer or memory: There are so many wonderful moments “on the job” but maybe my favorite moment was the day my nephew first called me by name. His version of my name is “Kishy.” I love it. That also included a kiss and big hug around my neck and that was priceless. Education: I graduated from Liberty High School. I had great
teachers and a couple that taught my parents as well! I received degrees from Morrisville and Sullivan County Community College. I have to say SCCC is a great option for local kids if they just take advantage of it. Professional certifications: I have degrees in Dietetics and Secretarial/ InfoTech (computers) Favorite movie: “It’s a Wonderful Life” has to be my all time favorite. Just to have George realize how many lives he touched is very eye opening. We may never know how, the way we treat a person will affect them, so I always try to be a compassionate, caring person. Favorite actor/and or actress: Going back to the good old days of wholesomeness and morals I would definitely choose Mickey Rooney – the days he acted with Judy Garland. If we come back to the present, then I would choose Matt Damon. How do you spend your spare time: In my spare time I practice and play fiddle, piano and guitar – writing and singing my own songs. My Dad was always playing the fiddle or guitar when we were kids, so my siblings and I naturally followed in his footsteps. I started playing piano at 5. I picked up the fiddle about 18 years ago and I bought myself a guitar a year ago. I have been truly blessed to be able to perform fiddle in public in our family band “The Kurpil Fiddlers.” We played on the main stage at Bethel Woods opening for Rhonda Vincent and Ralph Stanley. That was a great time! My sister Cindy and I sing and play dueling

harmony fiddles and our Dad is our guitar man. We always say “He never misses a beat”. My nephew Rudy and niece Kathleen join us on fiddles on occasion too. I also like to make quilts but haven’t kept any for myself. And my husband and I like to take long walks with our dogs.
Favorite vacation spot: I am easy to please. Give me a good book, a nice warm sunny day with the birds singing and I can vacation on my beautiful front porch. I don’t have to go far or spend lots of money to be happy and content. If we choose to get off the property and go somewhere with wonderful childhood memories, that place would be Little Pond State Park or Mongaup State Park. Local jewels. Family: I was born and raised, in a loving household, in Liberty across the street from my mom’s childhood home. I am blessed with fantastic parents, Sam and Frances who have been great role models. I am one of six children. I have two brothers, Sam Jr and Michael and hree sisters, Julie, Cindy and Jennifer. I am married to my best friend, Donny. We have three babies in heaven – two boys and a girl. God is watching over them until the day we meet again. We also have two rescue dogs Dolly and Dukey and a cat named Magoo. Favorite on-the-job moment: Finding out that the class of 2014 had a 100 percent pass rate on the NCLEX (national licensing exam for nurses in the US). We worked really hard over the past two years to re-write the curriculum with Marilyn Caldwell from State Education Department and hired some truly phenomenal teachers. It was so gratifying to know that everyone’s hard work – faculty, students, administrators – truly paid off. This was a 37 percent improvement – that is just spectacular. Student successes are the moments that I live for! Education: AS, Ulster County Community College; BS, SUNY New Paltz; MS, SUNY New Paltz. My husband and I went back to college in 1994 at age 39, with the goal of earning our nursing degrees. I truly believe that it’s never too late to change your destiny! Pamela DeMan STORY AND PHOTO BY DAN HUST
Name: Pamela DeMan Age: 68 Place of employment: Family Focus Adoption Services, a private, not-for-profit, full service adoption agency, approved by New York State and the Hague Convention. Our main mission is finding forever families for older children waiting in foster homes and residential facilities because they have been abandoned or betrayed by their birth parents. Current title and duties: As Adoption Specialist Supervisor, I visit and interview people who are interested in becoming parents through adoption, help them to understand children’s needs and whether they are prepared for the challenges. I also review the home studies written by our workers in other parts of New York. Years at current employer: 25 Favorite part of your job: Letting
people know that they don’t have to be married, straight, wealthy, in perfect health, or own their own homes, in order to adopt. Most challenging part of your job: Getting people to understand that “Love is all you need” is baloney. More important qualities are patience, unconditional commitment, and respect for the child and their emotional baggage. All children need families – they shouldn’t have to earn a family by good behavior. Favorite on-the-job moment, customer or memory: The “aha moment” when a frustrated adoptive father understands the concept of “inducement” and realizes that his unusually intense fear or anger is really what his child is feeling and has communicated nonverbally to him. Then the father is empowered to show his child how a grown-up can handle those overwhelming emotions. Education: Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, NY; Bachelor

Favorite actor and/or actress: James Woods How do you spend your spare time: Watching for deer and bears outside our log cabin, walking three miles around Lake Huntington, reading, writing, and visiting my mom, who resides at Bethany Village. Favorite vacation spot: Onboard a cruise ship Family: Bob, my husband of 32 years, son Steve of PA, son Mike of NC, stepsons Bob of TX, Rick and John of NY, stepdaughters Stacy of NC and Jen of PA, four daughters-inlaw, and nine grandchildren. Civic or volunteer affiliations: President, Women’s Community Club of Cochecton; Vice President, Cochecton Preservation Society Favorite quote/words to live by: “There, but for the grace of God, go I."
Favorite part of your job: I enjoy every part of my job. I love when I order a batch of books and they are checked out right after they hit the shelf, or when someone comes in and says they enjoyed the book they just read. I get to attend events such as Book Expo of America, Comic Con and the New York Library Association Youth Services Section conference to learn about upcoming books, the latest literary trends and meet authors, which helps me pick out those books that fly off the shelf. Planning and running programs is a lot of fun, and I try to be creative. When someone who has never been to the library before comes to a program, and then keeps coming back because they had so much fun, I know that I’m doing a good job. I am lucky enough to work with a group of people who are helpful and supportive of my sometimes crazy program ideas (Zombie Apocalypse Survival Kits???), and to have a library director who encourages me to try different things.
Also, after doing a school visit, I like seeing the kids in the library. They always say something like, “You’re that library lady who was at my school!” Most challenging part of your job: Figuring out why something did not work. If I have an unsuccessful program, there could be many reasons why it did not go as planned. Was it on a bad night? A bad time? Not enough advertising? Was there simply a lack of interest? Finding the answers to these questions is not always easy and can take time, but when I do get the answer, it makes the next program better. Favorite on-the-job moment, customer or memory: There are so many! I love it when kids and teens come up to me after a program and tell me they had fun, or when they are excited about a book. I’m not sure about my favorite, but a recent amazing on-the-job moment was on October 7, the day Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan was released. There were two teens that my co-workers and I knew would

Seeing the deal to fruition and having both sides be truly happy with their decision and outcome is extremely satisfying. Most challenging part of your job: Time is one of the most challenging parts of this profession as well as being a perk – 9 to 5 does not exist in real estate. Working weekends, nights and early mornings to accommodate clients are all part of the job. I recently worked with a gentleman living in Korea who purchased a second home. With a 12-hour time difference, we were corresponding at all times of the day and night! Extraordinary volunteer and professional honored by Wayne County women and ended up hired to paint murals at children’s hospitals in Oklahoma and England. Betty called Kim “your not-soaverage local girl with a passion and commitment for helping others in her community,” and indeed the community turned out that evening to shower her with applause and gifts. Guest speaker Joyce DeBastiani, owner of the Wallflower shop in Honesdale and the Lodge at Keen Lake in Waymart, urged the audience to emulate Kim’s enthusiastic volunteerism.

STORY AND PHOTO BY DAN HUST
HONESDALE, PA — From filling a dump truck with 8,000 pennies destined for the American Cancer Society to writing a book on the history of Honesdale, Pa., Kim Erickson has made an indelible mark on Wayne County. Yet when honored as a “Hidden Jewel” by the Business and Professional Women of Wayne County, Kim tossed the accolades back to her mother, Beach Lake resident Peg Pearsall. “If I’m the ‘Jewel,’ my Mom has to be the ‘Rare Gem’,” she told a capacity crowd at Tick-Tock’s in Honesdale on October 20. “She taught me that there is always someone worse off than you, so don’t complain – help!” Kim is the personification of her mother’s mantra. Currently the assistant activities director at Ellen Memorial Health Care and Rehabilitation Center (a local nursing
home), Kim has become the go-to fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity, and the recent Leadership Wayne-coordinated flight of World War II veterans visiting Washington, DC’s memorials and Arlington National Cemetery. A friend of Kim’s related that she’s the light and joy of many a nursing home resident, bringing them costumes for Halloween, taking them out on field trips, painting their nails in extraordinarily creative ways, and always ensuring their day is filled with activity and meaning. “Kim is a dynamo,” acknowledged Betty DeMaye Caruth of Business and Professional Women of Wayne County. “She has more energy ... than most of the people I know!” This, after sustaining a skiing injury that doctors said would prevent her from ever walking again. While the resulting issues did force her to close her Damascus daycare, Kim literally regained her footing
“We are all each a piece, however large or small, of the puzzle,” Joyce affirmed. “We can’t stand alone. We need to stand together.”
Time will tell. Favorite quote/ words to live by: “Pray without ceasing.” My grandmother was always praying for someone or something. I remember how she would say “God have mercy on their soul,” when she thought of someone who had passed away or as we passed the cemetery. She always had a rosary in her pocket. I remember watching her from a distance and noticing her lips move as she prayed the rosary in silence. She said, “When you pray for others you find peace.” It is so true. It would be great if we could all get back to thinking of others instead of always thinking about ourselves. I was by her side the night Gram died. She died in peace and I truly believe it was her faith in God that gave it to her.
Congratulations Kim! from Your Friends at Wayne Memorial Health System 23470

church. I taught Sunday School for 15 years “retiring” this year. I also helped with Children’s Church. I feel that giving a child a love for God is one of the most important things we can do. If a child is taught to love and respect their Creator, I think they have a better chance of growing up to love their neighbor and value a person from conception to the last breath of life. I hope I have touched little lives. I worked at St Peter’s Regional Catholic School in Liberty for four years in their latchkey program and it was a highlight of my life to give just a tiny bit of God’s love to each precious little person. Like I said before, I just wish I had been given a child of my own but my husband and I are trying to get certified in the foster care program.
