Events that are held within small towns are often run by people with full-time jobs, families, and other commitments. Community organizations and emergency personnel that are primarily made of volunteers are crucial to local neighborhoods. “We do save a lot of taxes for people,” Callicoon Fire Chief William Maxwell said. He works for the Town of Delaware Highway Department and has served his community as a volunteer firefighter for 32 years. Maxwell

a career [paid] department here, in Hortonville, and the neighboring companies.” Preparation for the fire department’s pancake breakfast starts two months
before the event – which includes placing food orders, making fliers, and cleaning the firehouse. The morning of the parade, which is Sunday, June 9 this year, members and
other volunteers for the Callicoon Fire Department start to arrive at the firehouse at 3:30 a.m. and do not leave until 4 p.m. On average, there are 30 to 35 people to help prepare and serve guests before they gear up for the parade. While hot breakfasts are being served at the firehouse, Sullivan West High School Assistant Principal and Delaware Youth Center (DYC) Board Director Scott Haberli directs traffic downtown as tractors begin arriving for the big parade. Although the morning is “hectic,” Haberli has fun doing so while seeing new and familiar faces. “I’ve always had an interest in the

youth center,” said Haberli. When a grant was offered to Sullivan West for new gym equipment, a requirement was for Haberli to partner with a community organization. After he volunteered at the DYC, a position became available and Haberli became one of the nine directors. Since then, Haberli attends board meetings, clean up days, and other events. “It’s been very rewarding,” he said. The board of directors are all volunteers, and together they help raise money to operate the youth center. Although hours fluctuate, Haberli estimates that they spend 15 hours per month volunteering between fundraisers and meetings. Tractor Parade Coordinator Katrina Graby has also enjoyed her time as a volunteer at the DYC. For four years, she has given her time to plan, find people to help at different stations, and organize the parade. “Without volunteers we couldn’t move forward as a community,” said Graby. She has found that volunteering helps individuals get involved with their communities while helping others, adding that, “I think they help their CONTINUED ON PAGE 4C

community evolve.” A universal issue that Graby raised is how organizations and emergency personnel lack volunteers. With people often needing two or three jobs, it can be hard to find the time. This puts a strain on companies comprised of volunteers in small towns. “It’s hard keeping people wanting to come and join fire departments and stuff,” said Maxwell. “They don’t really want to volunteer. They want to work and get paid for it.” People can go to the Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, June 9 from 7 a.m. - 11 a.m. at the Callicoon Fire Department before the Tractor Parade, which starts at noon. As attendees enjoy the festivities throughout the day, volunteers within the community strive to create memories that last a lifetime. “A sense of togetherness is a good feeling,” said Haberli.
BBQ info After the parade, attendees can go to the barbeque at the DYC, where all proceeds go towards their operations. Peck’s Market in Callicoon is donating hot dog and hamburger
buns, and Chaljeri Meats is donating the hot dogs, hamburgers, and the pork for the BBQ, which will be prepared by The Ugly Smoker Pit BBQ owners Tanya and Dwayne Hubbert. Tickets will be sold on the field under the BBQ ticket tent as they have in the past and can be pre-purchased as well. Contact tractor@delawareyouthcenter.org for tickets and info or stop in the Delaware River Solar office at 3 Bridge St in Callicoon to get your tickets.

Hometown girl: Kaitie Rubin is this year’s Grand Marshal STORY AND PHOTOS BY ISABEL BRAVERMAN
K
aitie Rubin always knew she would come back home. The Monticello native grew up on her family’s livestock farm that they’ve owned since 1917. Now as a fourth generation farmer, Kaitie is continuing the family legacy. At 29 years old Kaitie has a full schedule that keeps her busy. Not only does she work on the farm but she also is a full-time social worker at Emma C. Chase Elementary School in Wurtsboro. With her parents, Jay and Shirley Rubin, they oversee Rubin Livestock Services, a 250-acre farm that has cattle, goats, sheep, horses and pigs that they buy and sell. They also give riding lessons and
hold horse shows in the summer. After graduating from Monticello High School, she got her Bachelor’s Degree in psychology from Bucknell University and her Master’s Degree in social work from the University at Buffalo. Working at both the school and on the farm can certainly be a balancing act, but it’s one Kaitie enjoys. “It’s a tough job [social worker], so it’s really nice to be able to come home and work with animals,” she said. Her specialty is working with horses, and she began riding at the age of five (her dad even bought her a horse when she was two years old). “I enjoy working with horses and being a part of something that’s been in my family for so long,” Kaitie says. “I can’t picture myself being anywhere else.”
Kaitie Rubin of Rubin Livestock Services in Monticello is the Grand Marshal for the 2019 Callicoon Tractor Parade.

Kaitie with her horse Colty.
One of their biggest events is the horse, tack and machinery auction, which will be held this year on Saturday, June 15. The schedule is: 10 a.m. tack and stable supplies; 1 p.m. trailers and machinery; and 2 p.m. horses, ponies and donkeys. Kaitie says it’s a huge event and last year’s sale featured over 60 head of cattle. Horse consignments are welcome. The farm is located at 93 Rubin Road in Monticello. For more information call 845-7982509. In her spare time Kaitie enjoys relaxing at the pool or the beach. She also competes in horse shows at local country fairs. As the Grand Marshal of the Callicoon Tractor Parade she will drive a New Holland tractor that they got from Fosterdale Equipment. The parade exemplifies her country roots—highlighting the agricultural community. After earning her prestigious degrees, she said, “There was never any question I wouldn’t be back home.”

‘Driving through the parade together’
O
BY AUTUMN SCHANIL ut of all 22 tractor parades in Callicoon, Dale Hess has only missed one. “I can't remember what year that was, but yea, something had come up and I had to miss it,” he said. “I remember the first parade 23 years ago was a rainy one, and no one really
knew what we were doing or what to expect. It’s of course changed a lot since then,” Hess continued. “There are a lot more tractors, and a lot more spectators. I think it’s a pretty neat thing to have in Callicoon.” Accompanied by his father, Roger, in the beginning, he’s now accompanied each year by either his son, Jake, or his daughter, Emma. And if they aren’t on
the tractor with him, they’re sitting in the crowd with his wife, and their mom, Rebecca, waving as they pass by. “The parade is great because you see so much variety these days. Large tractors, smaller tractors, old tractors and new tractors,” Hess explained. “It’s kind of amazing how many tractors are in and around Callicoon, and how many gather there once a year for this.
JEANNE SAGER | DEMOCRAT
Emma Hess waves from behind the wheel of a Kubota at last year’s parade.
Last year there were close to 300. I’m not sure how many more you could possibly fit in the parade,” he laughed. Hess, who works for the NYSDOT, still works the Hess Rd. family farm that has been passed down through the generations since 1849. Originally a dairy farm, Hess now has a large flock of sheep who run the pastures. “My father used to milk cows, but he never had a bulk tank, it was always just the milk cans,” explained Hess. “He used to take the milk cans down to the old creamery in Callicoon, but in the early 70s farmers were told to do CONTINUED ON PAGE 10C

explained that they had always had sheep on the farm when he was growing up, and everybody always loved the baby lambs because they were cute, but they also help keep the pastures chewed down, especially the parts that are more rocky that can't be mowed or hayed.

The Hesses always see a lot of friends along the parade route, and this file photo from the 2015 Callicoon Tractor Parade shows Rebecca, Dale and Emma atop the Kubota.
Looking out at the flock you could see with every big mama sheep, there were either one or two sweet, fluffy babies running around, jumping, kicking or suckling milk. “We raise the lambs for meat of course, Hess said, looking out at the flock, “and our big sheep are getting sheared next week. Unfortunately there’s really no money in wool. They get sheared to keep them more comfortable and looking better. Otherwise the wool gets really thick and matted.
Walking past the sheep and up a small hill to the barn, you could see a beautiful, old, green John Deere tractor sitting at the top, shining in the sun. “So Jake will be driving this tractor in the parade this year. I’ve taken this one down the most, it was my father’s tractor. It’s a 1951 John Deere A, and it's been on the farm since I was born, smiled Hess, “and I'll take down a different tractor, so we'll be driving through the parade together.
