here are a lot of things that signify the beginning of summer in the minds of Sullivan County residents. It could be the first time they fire up the grill for the season or that annual trip to the lake on Memorial Day Weekend. For many others, however, the

Callicoon Tractor Parade is the beloved and time-honored tradition that marks the symbolic beginning of summer. Unfortunately, the Tractor Parade has not been immune from the disruption caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic. In light of the potential risk to public safety, the 24th annual Tractor Parade will be held virtually

this year. Organizers have been encouraging the public to send in pictures of their tractor to tractor@delaware youthcenter.org. They asked participants to pose in the picture alongside their family and even pets or animals! CONTINUED ON PAGE 4C

At the end of June, they will use these photos to create a video representing the “virtual parade.” “It’s one of the largest fundraisers that we do and we’re able to provide to the Delaware Youth Center,” said Tractor Parade Organizer Katrina Graby. “By not doing it, it would jeopardize the Youth Center because they rely on that funding each year.” Besides the benefit to the Youth Center, Graby said that people cherish their Tractor Parade T-shirts. In light of these traditions and the benefits they’re able to provide, parade organizers were determined that the show must go on in some shape or form. “We’re still able to give people at least part of what they look forward to every year,” said Graby. “A lot of organizations are having to rethink how they do things and this was the most ‘normal’ that we could make it.” In past years, the parade has attracted people from far beyond Callicoon to enjoy great food, admire the farm equipment and

support the proud legacy of agriculture and self-sufficiency the event represents. Despite the cancellation of the physical parade this year, Graby said the hope is that people will still purchase BBQ tickets and T-shirts so they can carry on the tradition and benefit the Youth Center at the same time. Graby said people can submit their tractor photos until June 19. As of the end of May, Graby said they’ve gotten a lot of tractor photos already, as well as dozens of t-shirt sales and hundreds of dollars in barbecue orders. “People are responding quickly,” she said. “We just hope that we’re able to get to all of the people who usually attend the parade so they can still have that tradition this year.” Graby thanked all of the essential workers who have helped out with the parade in past years, especially the Upper Delaware Volunteer Ambulance Corps, which has always stood on standby at the parade, as well as the Callicoon Volunteer Fire Department.

Tractor Parade’s rich history explored BY JEANNE SAGER

T

he first year of the Callicoon Tractor Parade, there were just 45 vehicles rolling down Main Street. Perched on one of them was 4-year-old Michael Feigenbutz, a kid from Obernburg whose family would go on to become mainstays in the parade. He didn’t know it then but more than two decades later, he wouldn’t just be a little kid on a tractor. He’d be a proud dad taking his own two kids to the tractor parade. When the Sullivan County Democrat asked members of the community to share their memories of the Callicoon Tractor Parade, stories like Feigenbutz’s poured out. Stories of families and tradition. Stories of friendships born and friendships bolstered. After 24 years, the June parade has become more than just a fundraiser for the Delaware Youth Center. It’s become a part of the fabric of the community

and tribute to the largely German and Swiss immigrants who settled in the hills around the Delaware River to farm our rich soil and raise their families. So how did it all begin? Believe it or not, the roots of a rich farming tradition are on a golf course. Two-and-a-half decades ago, Kathy Langley, the original creator of the Tractor Parade, was playing golf with a friend who restored antique tractors. A member of the Callicoon Business Association at the time, Langley was on the hunt for attractions that would bring more people to the town. Antique tractor shows didn’t sound terribly interesting to her, but what if she combined a show with a parade? Who doesn’t love a parade? As she told the Democrat in 2007, “Everyone looked at me like, ‘This woman is crazy!’” It didn’t stop her. Twenty-four years ago, 45 tractors rolled down Main Street, including one with little Michael Feigenbutz on board. Last year — 2019 — that number was 218. And the crowd on hand to watch it was even bigger.

Tractors come in all shapes and sizes and the parade route is lined with spectators wearing t-shirts to match their favorite brand.

They came for the parade that the New York Post once called a “quaint annual tradition, that Fodor’s said “epitomizes the flavor of Callicoon: funny and funloving, with a reverence for its agricultural history. This year the parade’s turned virtual, with pick-up only for tshirts and barbecue, but the tragdition hasn’t stopped rolling through Callicoon. Keep on Rollin’

radition, by definition, is the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation. And locally that tradition has been reflected at the Callicoon Tractor Parade, where you’ll find multiple members of local families spanning generations taking part in the day’s festivities. Despite the move online due to the ongoing pandemic, several members of the local community are helping to make the virtual parade a success with their photo submissions ... or in more fitting terms, making sure this annual spectacle ‘keeps on rollin.’ Vanessa Olsen, a farmer at Brey’s Egg Farm, believes it is a good thing that the event is still taking place, albeit virtually, so we

BY JOSEPH ABRAHAM remember what life was like before COVID-19. “We’re staying safe, but still keeping the tradition going,” she said. “We realize the tractor parade is really important to everyone.” Daniel Diehl will be submitting a photo with his fiance Hayley Puerschner and their newborn baby boy, Daniel Jr. As to why they’re making sure to participate, Diehl said, “To support local agriculture and spend time with our family.” For local resident April Bunny White, the virtual tractor parade provides a unique opportunity. “My family has had tractors and equipment since I was very

young, but we never entered the parade,” she said. “It was always my Dad's thought that if you’re going to be in a parade, like we did with his antique car restorations, that you should showcase your hard work, whether it be in a tractor restoration or equipment that you use when you're hard at work. We're not big farmers, we just use the stuff around the property for snow plowing, cleaning gutters, digging ditches, and mowing.” White says she personally remembers the tractor parade in a different way, with Frank and Carol Kay and the many summers she worked at the Callicoon Flea Market, and how we'd get flooded

with people buying chairs and umbrellas, and she remembers the sound of the tractors during the parade. A few years ago her “other half” moved to the area from Poughkeepsie and saw his first tractor parade and thought it was the coolest thing. “Ever since it’s been a staple event for us to attend,” she said. “I wanted to surprise him this year with the opportunity for him to be in the parade.” White loaded him and the dogs up for a photo shoot! for She added that her “bonus mom” Beth also loves the tractor CONTINUED ON PAGE 11C

Grandpa’s Hayride Kathleen Capozzoli sent in this clipping of her dad, Bob Hillriegel, driving in the 2013 Callicoon Tractor Parade on his 71st birthday. Kathleen wrote, “It was the one time that we were able to get all the kids, grandkids and greatgrandkids together at the same time. We all filled the hay wagon and the kids were identified by the color of their shirts. We identified the feature in the parade as “Grandpa’s Hayride”. The tractor he was driving he restored himself (a Massey-Harris). It was for his 71st birthday and is one of the greatest memories of his life.”

he Callicoon Tractor Parade may just last for a few hours one Sunday a year, but thanks to hundreds of t-shirts traditionally sold in the center of town, parade-goers get to hang onto the feeling all year-round. This year, tradition is going to hold. Due to concerns over safety in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the popular Callicoon parade has gone virtual this year — with folks being asked to submit photos for an online version of the parade. But the t-shirts will be very real Tractor Parade Organizer Katrina Graby told the Democrat. The decision to turn the parade into a virtual event was hard, Graby said, but moving forward with the tradition of a tractor parade t-shirt was a no-brainer. “Ultimately this is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the
