CALLICOON TRACTOR PARADE
SULLIVAN COUNTY DEMOCRAT
JUNE, 2018
Young Farmers: Brandon Peters is this year’s Grand Marshal BY ISABEL BRAVERMAN
“S
hare the road. This is a farming community.” Signs with that message can be seen on roads throughout Sullivan County. For farmer Brandon Peters, it's as pertinent as ever: on a recent sunny afternoon Peters drove his tractor from his farm in Hortonville to a cornfield in Cochecton, a 30-minute trip. He went out to plow his uncle's fields to get ready to plant corn. And soon he will drive his tractor from his farm to the Callicoon Tractor Parade, where he will lead hundreds of other tractors as this year’s Grand Marshal. Driving a tractor is a part of everyday life for Peters, who grew up on his family's dairy farm on North Branch Road in Hortonville, just outside of Callicoon. Now he runs the farm with his dad, David, and they have over 100 cows. Farming is a family tradition and his father bought the farm in 1972. Peters was born and raised in the area, attending Sullivan West High School. He started driving a tractor at the age of 12 and would work on the farm before and

after school. “It's a good way to keep you out of trouble,” he said. After graduating high school in 2008 he stayed in the area to work on the farm. The motto of this year's tractor parade is Young Farmers, and 28year-old Peters is a perfect example of what makes a young farmer in Sullivan County today. He's worked on the farm for “as long as I can remember.”
This will be the first year Peters drives in the tractor parade. He's attended the event many years in the past, but never actually participated, mostly because, “most of the time we're out making hay,” at the same time as the parade, Peters said. Indeed, a farmer's work never ceases. At 28 years old and carrying the tradition of many farmers before him, Peters is an perfect choice as Grand Marshal.

The Callicoon Tractor Parade offers fun for people of all ages. Make sure to arrive early to get a good spot to view it from. The parade starts at noon, with lineup beginning as early as 8 a.m.

T
hrough the glitz and the glamour that surrounds the large metropolis which describes most big cities, it’s in the heart of smaller communities where you’ll find the most exciting and interesting traditions. The hamlet of Callicoon has several, with the most notable one taking place every June, the Callicoon Tractor Parade. On Sunday, June 10, the 22nd chapter of this uniquely terrific event will be written. There are several reasons to attend this event, which is sponsored by the Delaware Youth Center
(DYC). Here are just a few… The spectacle: Where else can you see tractor after tractor cruising down Main Street? It’s a sight you don’t want to miss. The food: Head down to the Callicoon Fire Department in the morning and fill up with a delicious pancake breakfast. Then, save some room for a chicken barbecue (only $12) after the parade by Mr. Willy’s on the DYC grounds. Proceeds from the bar-
becue benefit the youth center. The fun: The parade offers a perfect time to catch up and hang out with friends and family. Also, make sure to awaken your competitive spirit and participate in a tug of war after the parade. The hamlet itself: After the parade, barbecue and tug of war, take some time and walk through the hamlet and plan your next visit. Also, stop by the Farmers Market.

past. It is sometimes hard to tell which is more popular, the latest edition or a vintage version. “Sometimes the older ones become more desirable, Ann said with a laugh. Whatever your desire, Ann and her capable crew of volunteers will be at their booth on Lower Main Street selling the latest version of the Callicoon Tractor Parade t-shirt, which is sure to be a collector’s item. Katrina Graby, one of the organizers of the Callicoon Tractor Parade said, “Ian Marcus of Hudson Valley Advertising designed this year’s t-shirt and Van Morrow will be printing them. “The sales all benefit the Delaware Youth Center, she said.

Volunteers needed! K
atrina Graby, one of the big wheels of the 22nd Annual Callicoon Tractor Parade – pun intended – said volunteers are needed to help with this year’s June 10 event. “We need extra help with traffic control and clean up, Katrina said. “I’m a little nervous, we really need volunteers. The annual event, which attracts more than 2,000 people to the hamlet of Callicoon each June, looks like a well-oiled machine as workers register tractors, direct traffic, sell merchandise and announce the tractors and drivers as they roll down Main
Street. But the secret to the success is hard work, pre-planning, lots of coordination and VOLUNTEERS. Like any organization, it is both rewarding and self fulfulling to help make this event great again this Katrina Graby year. So if you can help, please call Katrina Graby at 215630-3882.

doing what I love,’” as well as sharing those precious moments with family. Gene Walter, a retired farmer in Town of Fallsburg, shared a story he once heard about a farmer and his tractor in the Midwest. The farmer was plowing early in the morning (around 4 a.m.), and had finished and went home. The police soon showed up at the farmer’s house and he had no idea why. Apparently, the farmer never lifted his plow and for the whole half a mile home, in which he pulled out onto the highway, took the road out with him. Pete Diehl, Owner of the Sportsmen’s Den in Callicoon, had a few stories to share. “We used to know an old guy who didn’t have a driver’s license, so he drove his tractor to the bar everyday.” Another interesting tractor story he shared was how his son Danny brought his date to the high school prom (Sullivan West) at the Villa Roma on a John Deere tractor.

Thankfully the tractor, which according to multiple sources, historically dates back to the late 1800s, is still a fixture of American life over a century later. Here’s some tractor tales from local residents…. Callicoon Town Supervisor Tom Bose explained that when having a bad day he likes to tell people, “Just put me in the field with a tractor, it’s the best therapy.” He recalled a fond memory from many years ago around Father’s Day, where his father (in his 80s at the time) came by the farm to help out. While working, Bose observed his son and his father working beside one another and that moment touched his heart. “I thought, ‘how lucky am I to be

he Sullivan Renaissance crew was in Callicoon on a sunny day at the end of May to work on the garden outside Matthew’s on Main. Two Sullivan Renaissance crew members, Gabe Corcillo and Russ Scheirer, along with Callicoon Beautification Committee Chairperson John Erik Karkula, planted flowers and other plants in the small garden to beautify the town. Owner and Chef Matthew Lane planted the garden over a decade ago. The Sullivan Renaissance members will put in herbs such as basil, oregano and parsley, so chef Lane doesn’t have to travel very far to get his produce. Karkula explained the Beautification Committee is working hard to enhance the town’s natural landscape and aesthetic. They also hope to win an award from Sullivan Renaissance in the process. “The Callicoon Beautification Committee is actively trying to win a Sullivan Renaissance award in August,” Karkula said. He
said this year they are focusing on perennials and plants that attract local fauna like birds and bees. The garden will be blooming with black-eyed Susans, bee balm, yarrow, hop vines and others. Scheirer of Sullivan Renaissance explained, “We go throughout the county and help different people and organizations with jobs and projects.” Sullivan Renaissance is a beautification and community development program principally funded by the Gerry Foundation. The program provides communities in Sullivan County with seed money for beautification projects. The annual awards program is a beautification contest in which communities compete to create the “best project” in their size and category. Towns can submit their projects and judging is in August. Like in recent years, Callicoon will have another busy summer, attracting visitors to its restaurants, shops, entertainment, farmers market, and of course the Tractor Parade. As the tractors roll by, they can stop to smell the roses.

Perfect ending to a perfect day STORY AND PHOTOS BY NICOLE PERILLO
G
oing to a movie theater can easily be described as somewhat magical. The dim lights, surround sound and large screens provide an experience that can’t be imitated in any other setting. The feeling of watching a brand new film in the one place where it’s available is nothing short of sensational. A great place to enjoy a new movie in Sullivan County is the Callicoon Theater. The Callicoon Theater, built in 1948, is the oldest running cinema in Sullivan County. In the early 1990’s it was refurbished with more modern projection, sound and air conditioning, while keeping the old visual style of the theater intact. The original waterfall curtain is still in place, as well as the water fountain, Manley popcorn machine and 1940’s light
Playing now through June 14th is SOLO, the latest in the Star Wars series
fixtures. With adult tickets at $10 ($8 for Mondays and Matinees) and children’s tickets at $7, it is a satisfying and inexpensive cinematic expe-
rience. The Callicoon Theater is open year-round and contains 380 seats with ample leg room. “I’ve been going there since the early 70's, Jeffersonville resident Sue Bodenstein said. “It’s a wonderful place to go because they’ve kept the spirit of the theater alive. You can feel the warmth of the theater and it smells great, like popcorn. It’s family friendly and very special to the community. Since 1996, the Callicoon Theater has been honored annually by locals as the best movie theater in the region. It has also received praise from the U.S. Congress, the New York State Assembly and the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce. “I’m one of the Callicoon Theater’s biggest fans, says Lynne Freda of Freda Real Estate. “It’s not like the small cookie cutter theaters that you’re used to. There’s one large screen and they serve popcorn with
real butter, which you never see anymore. Also, it’s right here in Sullivan County so we don’t have to worry about traveling far to go to the movies because of the Callicoon Theater. “They show art films as well as more popular films, which I love, Freda goes on to say. “They also donate money to the Deleware Valley Arts Alliance. The owners, Barbara and Jim, are just wonderful. After the Callicoon Tractor Parade on Sunday, June 10, find some time to catch a movie at the Callicoon Theater. They’re showing Solo: A Star Wars Story (PG-13) at 7:30 p.m. And starting Friday, June 15 they’ll be showing Incredibles 2. For more information, visit the Callicoon Theater on Facebook or their website, www.callicoontheater.com. You can also call 845-8874460.
