you’re welcome

W

by Joseph Abraham

e’ve all been drawn to the kitchen by the aroma of fresh baked goodies. And some of our most treasured memories were enjoying them at the kitchen table with friends and family. That atmosphere is what Leanne Cuiffo and Mark Aubrey have created at The Kitchen Table Cafe. “Something welcoming and warm, a place to just be yourself and indulge in a variety of super yummy foods and drinks,” explained Cuiffo. “A place to go if your feeling blue or just on cloud nine. Think of how you feel when you are at your Mom’s or Grandma’s kitchen table. Eat great foods, drink something warm, have lots of laughs, make new memories and revisit the old ones.” They’ve been welcoming customers to their ‘Kitchen Table’ on Lower Main Street in Callicoon since February, in the location formerly known as Cafe Adella Dori. Leanne and Mark moved to Damascus, PA, right across the river from Callicoon, four years ago. Mark was a fireplace and BBQ expert when they lived in Queens, servicing 6

and installing a lot of high-end fireplaces in the Long Island, Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn areas. Leanne was in the footwear/accessories industry for about 17 years, where she created many footwear lines for various retails in the discount and licensed realm of footwear and accessories. She traveled across the United States and abroad to develop all of these lines and collaborate with many agents. She has been visiting the area since the 80s. Leanne and Mark were recently in the process of starting a brand with their special Ted’s Sauce, inspired by a family recipe that they now use at the cafe. Also, Leanne has made cakes and sweets for various people and her family for years. Those turned out to be perfect ‘ingredients’ in the decision to open Kitchen Table. “We had the opportunity to take all of this to the next level and we decided to go full force with a cafe,” Cuiffo said, adding that they hoped the cafe brought a lot to the ‘table’ for everyone. Leanne handles most of the baking, while Mark and staff cook the to-order items. Your sweet tooth will be satisfied by the AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2020

great selection from scones to cookies and cakes. The overwhelming customer favorite are their homemade Oatmeal Cream Pies. “[They] just bring you back to your childhood of brown bagged lunches and boxed milk, sitting at a table in the cafeteria at school. I am sure

by the end of it, you will feel so nostalgic and giddy that will only leave a huge smile on your face,” Cuiffo said. On the savory side, Kitchen Table Cafe offers a number of delicious sandwiches from chicken salad, grilled cheese with bacon to Leanne and Mark’s hands down favorite, Ted’s Egg Sandwich. It’s the perfect combination of locally sourced eggs and microgreens from Hilly Acres Farm and Sprouting Dreams Farm respectively, paired with the secret Ted sauce, which adds a nice kick. No matter what you order, you’ll need a nice beverage to wash it down. Try a latte, soothing tea or iced cappuccino. You won’t be disappointed. Park yourself on a bench outside the Kitchen Table Cafe on one of the prettiest streets (Lower Main Street, Callicoon) in upstate New York. Or you can lounge at a cafe table or window seat inside where you are guaranteed to be tempted by the display case of sumptuous pastries.

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2020

THE KITCHEN TABLE CAFE 33 Lower Main Street, Callicoon, NY 12723 (845) 887-3313 www.thekitchentablecafe .com Open Tuesdays and Thursday-Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram. During the pandemic, Mark and Leanne started a new tradition at The Kitchen Table Cafe –– Tuesday Dinner from 58 p.m.–– which has been a smash hit. Past dinners have included South Korean bulgogi, Indian Butter Chicken and Greek Gyros. Each Tuesday they offer both a meat and vegetarian option. “When we noticed it was a little challenging to find these types of cuisines in the area and we found ourselves talking about the many foods we had eaten and missed, we decided to share this with everyone,” Cuiffo said. “So Tuesday Dinners started and we hope everyone does enjoy the different ethnic cuisines we cook up.”

new art festival in the Town of Fallsburg, Art in the Park, debuted on Facebook Live on August 8. Festival Director, Patricio Robayo, had initially planned for the festival to take place at Morningside Park in Hurleyville. However, when COVID-19 hit, out of the safety for all involved, Robayo announced that Art in the Park would go virtual. The all-day event, which can be viewed at your leisure on the festival's Facebook page, features artists, poets, writers, filmmakers and live music. “This festival will celebrate art and help showcase the vibrant and talented artists we have here in the Sullivan Catskills,” said Robayo prior to the festival's debut. “We are excited to bring a full day of art to everyone.”

Isabel Braverman will be giving viewers an introduction to ballet.

The Lodge at the Claryville Center accomodates seven guests. The menu at the Russian Mule Brewery and Tasting Room features Russian specialties like this Peimeni – homemade Russian ravioli. Also, their scrumptious chicken wings come with your choice of sauce. You’ll be greeted by many friendly faces including Co-owner Irina Nicoletti and Claryville Center Manager Savannah Mendez. Want something to remember your visit? A Russian Mule Brewery t-shirt is just one of the items for sale at the brewery.

Dining and entertainment The Russian Mule serves specially brewed beers and ciders, and a full menu of traditional pub food like Veggie and Buffalo Chicken Flatbread Woodfired Pizza, Philly Cheese Steak, and BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches, as well as Russian specialties like Pelmeni –– homemade Russian ravioli with beef filling and a side of sour cream, sauteed mushrooms and onions. According to Irina, the House Made Corned Beef Sandwich is created with corned beef that has been cooked for six to eight hours. “You can understand how tender this is, and then you put it on fresh sourdough bread.” The culinary creations are the handiwork of Chef William Mendez, who used to be head chef at the New Age Health Spa down the road in Neversink. There’s also entertainment in the Russian Mule, featuring popular local artists. And while the license to brew is still pending, Frank said that brewing companies like the Roscoe Beer Company, are producing special beers according to the Russian Mule’s recipes. “It’s not uncommon when you first start out that other people make your beer for you. By September we should be manufacturing our own beer,” he said. Weddings and accommodations Frank explained a typical wedding event: “The bride gets ready in the house, the groom in the cabin. Often, they’ll have the cocktail

party in the Art Center, the reception in the Event Center, and finish off the evening in the Tasting Room. Then, the bride and groom stay in the house after the wedding.” Oh, and don’t forget the Brewery can host your rehearsal dinner the evening before, and the Event Center can host a breakfast the next morning. The cabin and the house each sleep six, and the lodge accommodates another seven. Come and relax for a spell According to Savannah, the complex is popular with people who want to get away for a while. It’s trendy with hikers, hunters, snowmobile and fishing enthusiasts, skiers and bikers, and per Irina “people looking for some private space … you see a lot of young people coming to this area.” “It’s also the economics,” added Frank. “Many people can’t afford to go to the Hamptons, or other places, and the Catskills are still a beautiful place to go at a very reasonable price.” “Everybody has a different budget,” explained Irina, “and we try to be very reasonable in accommodating.” Irina loves the whole idea of the complex being part of an art center. “So, people not only come here to taste some beer, but also take in some culture, too.” “That’s it,” laughs Frank. “It’s about beer and culture.”
