There’s no better time to escape for a stay at the new and beautiful destination known as Kenoza Hall, where you can relax, recharge and find healing in nature. It is truly luxurious in every aspect. This is evident in the amount of time and detail spent in its design. The majority of the furniture seen below and by the pool were custom designed specifically for Kenoza Hall. In its entirety, these choices give a fresh look to the restored Victorian.

“I

go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order” –– American Naturalist and Essayist John Burroughs, as displayed at www.kenozahall.com. With 22 rooms, the newest addition to the growing Foster Supply Hospitality (FSH) family represents their most ambitious undertaking to date. Kenoza Hall offers guests a resortlike experience, while

maintaining the small and intimate atmosphere that keeps visitors coming back to every FSH destination. From its setting to the carefully selected design choices paying homage to what FSH CoFounder Kirsten Foster affectionately calls “the Kenoza Critters,” Kenoza Hall reflects Burrough’s words in every facet. This magnificent property is a complete renovation of an 1880s boarding house, when visiting the country literally meant staying on the farm. Keeping with the FSH tradition of letting properties tell their own story, Kenoza Hall

maintains its rural history and Victorian-inspired design, but presents it in a more modern and fresh light (see sidebar). More than ever, amidst a global pandemic, people are seeking solace in nature. Yet, as Kenoza Hall demonstrates, that solace does not have to be a completely rustic experience. The friendly staff strives to make sure guests are comfortable, especially at this moment. Masks are worn, rooms are frequently cleaned, dining spaces are more than six feet

After enjoying the trails and curated gardens, go for a swim in the pool. Afterwards take in some history and enjoy a drink at the bar (see below), which is located in one of the original sections of the former 1880s boarding house.

Up the hill behind the main building is Hemlock Spa. With its many healthful amenities, it is reason in itself, to visit Kenoza Hall.

continued from page 11 apart, wellness classes are offered privately instead of in groups, and ozone air purification is used when guests check out. Heeding Burrough’s philosophy, Kenoza Hall offers healing within the Hemlock Spa, with Kneipp-inspired body treatments made famous by the area's early Swiss and German settlers, rooted in naturopathy and hydrotherapy. Hemlock boasts a Movement Studio which offers classes like aerial yoga, sound meditation, and guided meditation. Beyond, visitors can explore curated gardens, walking

trails, a hot tub, a pool and an outdoor barrel sauna. FSH Co-Founder Sims Foster has an extensive experience in the restaurant industry. Together with Kenoza Hall Executive Chef RJ Corley, he’s successfully revived a forgotten art –– Old World Continental Cuisine. Kenoza Hall’s restaurant, where visitors can also enjoy a beautiful view of Kenoza Lake, is fine dining at its best. The menu includes classics such as Dover Sole Meunière, Lobster Thermidor and Tournedos Rossini. It’s a blissful reunion with those who haven’t seen these dishes on menus for years, and an exciting introduction to a new generation unfamiliar with them. The restaurant also offers a sizable wine list, but in keeping with the relaxed atmosphere, there is no dress code. Looking for a day trip instead of an overnight stay? The general public is welcome at both the restaurant and spa, but be sure to call ahead first. One trip will demonstrate why reservations are a necessity…

Relax in the outdoor barrel sauna, before retreating back into one of Kenoza Hall’s well appointed and meticulously designed suites.

What we know as Kenoza Hall was once the Armbrust House, opened by John Armbrust, the son of German immigrants, in the early 1900s. While the majority of the newly renovated tourist destination is the original 1880s property, the Fosters did add a few extensions, including a full dining room that has six rooms above it. Kenoza Hall stays true to its history (and restored Victorian design) but with a twist. “We wanted to honor the Victorian roots of the building while bringing in a slightly playful and whimsical element to the design," Kirsten said. Custom designed period furniture is juxtaposed with a variety of wallpapers and custom "Kenoza critters" such as owls, rabbits and squirrels, all inspired by the retreat’s natural surroundings and wildlife, to provide pops of fun patterns, color and texture throughout the spaces.

our wondrous wetlands by Joseph Abraham ocated a few miles off Exit 113 on NY-17/Future Interstate 86 are several access points to the Bashakill Wildlife Management Area. In addition to breathtaking views, several recreational opportunities exist including fishing, hiking and kayaking. According to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation website, the Bashakill offers fifteen miles of walking trails and several observation towers enhance the visitor's outdoor experience. One trail follows the historic D&H Canal which borders the Bashakill on the west. On the east side of the marsh, the O & W railroad bed is used as a trail as well. Hikers are asked to stay on the designated trails to protect the diversity and richness of the plant communities found within this area. continued on page 18

continued from page 16 Fishing is also available year-round. The Basha Kill wetland contains largemouth bass, chain pickerel, panfish, and bowfin. Anecdotal evidence indicates there may be trout as well. Seasonally, gizzard shad have been found in the Basha Kill; schools of them have been observed at this location in the past. The Pine Kill is a quality small wild trout stream and may contribute some early season wild trout (primarily brown trout) to Bashakill WMA, where they will survive until the receeding water warms up in the summer. There are two trailered boat launches and three hand launch sites available. The Bashakill Wetland is home to over 200 species of birds and is a state designated Bird Conservation Area. The area supports characteristic breeding wetland-dependent species, abundant waterfowl, and several species at risk. Other wildlife visitors can watch include Marshbirds like the Green Heron, Great Blue Heron, Virginia Rail, Sora, Common Moorhen, Pied-Billed Grebe, American Bittern and Least Bittern; Waterfowl, including Canada Geese, Ring-Necked Duck and Wood Duck; Raptors including Bald Eagle, Osprey, Northern Harrier, SharpShinned Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, Northern Goshawk, and Red-Shouldered Hawk and Mammals including WhiteTailed Deer, Beaver, Muskrat, Otter, and Bats.
