Take a swing at Swan Lake Golf and Country Club BY JOSEPH ABRAHAM

s the rain subsides, and golfers begin to regularly get on the greens, there are a number of great courses to explore in Sullivan County –– including The Swan Lake Golf and Country Club, located in the Town of Bethel. You’ll find this beautiful course on 38 Eagle Drive in Swan Lake. It’s just ten miles from exit 101 on Route 17 (future Interstate 86), and near several local attractions like Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. So play a few rounds of golf before or after taking part in a number of celebratory events for the Golden Anniversary of Woodstock. Swan Lake is an 18-hole golf course rated 3 1/2 stars by Golf Digest. It was designed by William Mitchell and built in 1960, and offers a challenge for all skill-levels of golfers. The course is owned by Todd Gallo, and Bob Menges is the PGA Golf Professional, who has years of golfing knowledge, so sign up for a lesson! If you are looking for a challenging yet fair golf course with beautiful mountain views, Swan Lake is a good course for you. They have four sets of

tees for players of any ability level. The Gallo family and Menges pride themselves on making your experience on the course a good one. “The main reason to come play Swan Lake is the true golfing experience you will receive,” Menges said. “From the moment you arrive the staff will make you feel welcome. We try to make all of our customers enjoy everything about the time they spend at our facility. Our main focus is to grow the game of golf through a social setting. We invite any and all types of golfers, from the very competitive to the true beginner. If you are looking to spend time with friends and enjoy a beverage at the end of a fun round, we are the course for you. people to experience the recreational side as well. Also, they allow children to play for free when accompanied by an adult. “We feel at our golf course we want you to feel welcomed, not intimidated,” Menges added. “Just as you would going to any social event you and your family may choose.” Swan Lake has several leagues, two of which, Thursday Night couples and a Ladies League, are open all season. Menges’ favorite and most challenging holes No. 6 –– Par-3 165 yards from white tees You tee off from an elevated tee and hit to a green that is just slightly lower than the tee box and guarded by a bunker short and left. In between is a gully. It plays a little less

than the yardage because it is downhill. The green is the key on this hole. It is sloped severely from back right to left front. You want to keep your tee shot below the hole. Any ball above the hole is a difficult two putt. If you are to the right of the pin, you will face a fast putt that could break from 2-to4 feet. If your tee shot misses the green to the right you can get lucky and have a fortuitous bounce that will kick your ball to the left and on the green. If it stays to the right, you will face a hard chip to try to save par. I always try to be below the hole, and if I miss my tee shot, I like to be short so I am chipping uphill to the hole.

No. 14 –– Par-4 343 yards from the white tees This is a short hole where accuracy is very important. It is a sharp dog leg left with a down hill tee shot. It is a big risk-reward hole, meaning, you can cut the corner or play safe. If you play it safe, you have to hit your tee shot anywhere from 150170 yards. There is a neighboring farm in the distance with a window on the barn that gives you a great target to aim at. Your second shot is

also downhill but you are hitting from a tilted fairway from left to right. The ball will be below your feet if you are a righty or above for a lefty. The green is very receptive as it slopes from back to front and left to right, but there is not much room on either side as it is protected by woods. If you want to gamble and get closer to the green you have to hit a high right to left shot to get the ball over the trees and stay in the fairway. The ball has a tendency to run through the fairway into the woods. A big hitter could possibly reach the green, but I haven’t seen too many be successful. The green has many subtle breaks and is hard to read, which makes the hole difficult even though it is short.

No. 18 –– Par-4 380 yards from white tees. This is my favorite hole. It is a slight dogleg left, with a generous landing area for your tee shot. A right to left tee shot is the best, but straight is also a good strategy. Once you find the fairway you should have between 160 to 120 yards left. You can see the clubhouse in the distance as you are setting up to hit into a green with bunkers on both sides. Make sure not to hit your ball left of the green as it goes downhill sharply and can leave you a difficult pitch to the green. New pros in Fallsburg There are new pros at both Town of Fallsburg Municipal Golf Courses this summer. PGA Professional Geoff Walsh (right) has replaced 20-year golf professional Glenn Sonnenschein at the Town of Fallsburg Tarry Brae Golf Course. Sonnenschein announced his retirement earlier this year. In his 30 years as a golf pro Walsh has worked at the Shawangunk Golf Course near Ellenville, the Harbor Links Golf Course on Long Island, the Casperkill Golf Course in Poughkeepsie and the Nevele Grand near Ellenville. The Town of Fallsburg Lochmor Golf Course has named Michael Decker (left) as the golf professional and manager of this 18-hole facility. He has previously served as the assistant golf professional at Tarry Brae for three years and was then appointed to the golf professional position at Lochmor GC in 2001. His additional duties include scheduling, planning and implementation of all golf outings and leagues, as well as running the restaurant. Both golf courses are now open.

game. God surely got an angel when Jean left for the heavenly golf course. When asked how many times a week she played golf Jean's comment was, “I play golf every day that ends with a Y, but that has changed at Twin Village this year because I take Wednesday off to play Bridge.” Considered for so many years as one of the top women golfers in the tri-town areas of Rockland, Neversink and Fremont in New York and in the Summertree area of New Port Richey in Florida, Jean had won at least 10 club championships at the Roscoe Twin Village Golf Club and 14 club championships at the Summertree Golf Course

in Florida. Jean had been a runner-up champion at Summertree for a number of years. Added to her club championships are five holein-ones, one at Summertree and two at another Florida golf course and two at Twin Village on the 4th and 6th holes. Jean had also won several Invitational Tournaments. Several years ago she recorded an eagle on the par-4 fifth hole at Twin Village. For many years Jean golfed in the Tuesday Ladies league at Twin Village with her league partner Mary Austin and this duo won the league championship a number of times. A couple of years ago Jean was playing to an 8handicap at Roscoe and a 11-handicap at Summertree. Jean in recent years mostly played just nine holes a day. At Summertree she played seven days a week. Born on October 13, 1922 (Friday the 13th) in Bliss, south of the Buffalo area, Jean was raised on a farm and graduated from Bliss High School in 1938, graduated from Houghton College in 1943 and later received her Master of Library Science degree from SUNY Geneseo. In college Jean lettered in three sports –– basketball, tennis and track. One of the great professional honors Jean enjoys is her selection as a

member of MENSA (for IQ and intelligence level). She taught at Henderson High School in the Town of Henderson, Jefferson County, for one year and taught 7-12 math, 4-12 physical education, accompanied the chorus on the piano, coached the cheerleaders, coached boys basketball and drove the boys basketball players home after practice. Jean French (her maiden name) moved to the Roscoe area in 1944 to begin a 28-year teaching career at Roscoe Central where she taught math before taking seven years off to raise her family. She returned to the school district as school librarian. In 1944, Jean took up the game of golf for the

first time in her life after being urged to play with the school physical education teacher. “We rode to the golf course on our bicycles,” she told us. In 1946, Jean married LaVerne Knickerbocker who she met after he returned from military service. LaVerne was an outstanding athlete, was a good golfer and they joined the Twin Village Golf Club for $35 which Jean noted was the family club fee at that time. It wasn't until 1979 that Jean started to play everyday and at that time in her life she pointed out that, “We walked the course.” The Knickerbockers raised three children, Terry (former Jeff-Youngsville teacher and track coach who now lives in New Bern, North Carolina), Tom (who lives in Poughkeepsie and The Villages in Florida during the winter months), and Kim, who lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. All three have become excellent golfers and the Knickerbocker family for many years played a lot of “family golf.” LaVerne and Jean were married 55 years when he passed away in 2001. While golfing at the Roscoe Twin Village Golf Club it was always easy to spot Jean driving her Yamaha golf cart (the best looking golf cart on the course), and she was always sporting attractive golf attire.

and their sleigh bell-like voices or hefty bullfrogs with their booming bass notes, frogs and toads are crucial to the living environment. “They’re important because they eat insects, worms and snails, which might otherwise be pests,” said Newbern. “People love to have frogs in their gardens for this reason.” Studies have shown that in one night, a single frog can eat over 100 insects including caterpillars, sow bugs, cutworms and more. “They are also important decomposers since the tadpoles love to eat dead shad,” said Newbern, referring to the herring-like fish that spawn in rivers.

Frogs and their eggs also serve as prey for larger creatures. “Frogs lay so many eggs, and (are themselves) an important food source for a lot of things including fish, birds, turtles, snakes, other frogs and some insects,” said Newbern. But these amphibians, so-named because they live partly in water and partly on land, are under serious attack. Newbern ticked off the list of frog-and-toad threats: habitat loss, road mortality, climate change, pollution, road salt. PEEPING AT FROGS Sullivan County and northeastern Pennsylvania are home to seven frogs: the Eastern American Toad, Gray Treefrog, Northern Spring Peeper, Green Frog, Bullfrog, Pickerel Frog and Wood Frog. They all begin life in shallow pond water. Typically at night or in the early morning, a female full of eggs will respond to the mating call of a male. He clamps his forelegs in a tight grip around her middle until she has emitted her eggs and he has poured fertilizing sperm on them. On surface pond vegetation, eggs are laid in long strands if she’s a toad, or in jelly-like masses if she’s another kind of frog.

After a few days of incubation, depending on temperature and species, the tadpole hatches from the egg. The polliwog, as it’s also called, sports a fin-shaped tail for propelling itself through water to find edible algae and microplants. After some weeks or months, the metamorphosis into a frog begins. Hind-legs and forelegs develop on the tadpole. Lungs form, and the tadpole swims to shallow water and begins to inhale air. Its gills and tail are absorbed into the body. The creature begins to hop on land using its hindlegs. Before long, it sits in wait of its first

A frog’s large mouth features a long tongue attached to the front of the mouth for quick catching of insects. Huge, bulging eyes help frogs see in front, to the sides, and partially behind them. The eyes can be withdrawn into the head when danger threatens. And they use their eyes for help swallowing food –– a frog pulls its eyes down into the roof of its mouth and the eyes help push the food down its throat. For years frogs have been used extensively in medical research. For example, chemical compounds found in a frog’s skin can be used to treat pain and block infection. Andy Weber, the smallest frogs have a unique way of staying alive: “Wood frogs and spring peepers survive freezing and thawing,” he said, “because their bodies produce glucose that acts as antifreeze.” Very cool.

What can you do to save frogs and toads? • Do not use pesticides. Pesticides kill frogs, toads and salamanders and the insects they eat. • Leave natural and artificial ground cover (e.g., old wood cover boards or dead wood) in your backyard. Ground cover provides moist shelter to amphibians. • Leave native aquatic vegetation growing at your pond. It provides food, refuge, and breeding habitat for amphibians. • Eat organic food. By reducing pesticide and fertilizer use, you directly help in reducing the amount of chemical contamination that affects many amphibian species. • Avoid releasing environmental estrogens into the water. Environmental estrogens are known to affect amphibians worldwide, as well as human

he National Park Service came to the Upper Delaware River Region 41 years ago. Today, the wild and scenic park stretches along the river from Hancock all the way down to Sparrowbush (near Port Jervis). While the Park Service is part of the federal government, almost all of the land in the park is privately owned. This season, get out there and enjoy all the Delaware River has to offer!

• Recreation on the Delaware River – The shoreline of the river is mostly privately owned, but the waterway is open to public use, from numerous public access sites. Recreational opportunities include boating, fishing, and wildlife watching. While swimming is available, the river is swift and the rocks are slippery making it dangerous. • Delaware and Hudson Canal – Between 1825 and 1829, the Delaware and Hudson Canal was a 108-mile water route from the anthracite coal mines of Pennsylvania to the markets on the Hudson River. The U.S. Department of the Interior has designated the Delaware and Hudson Canal a National Historic Landmark and an NHL bronze plaque has been placed on the aqueduct. • Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct - Believed to be the oldest suspension bridge in the United States, retaining its original elements. • Zane Grey Museum – Zane Grey (1872 – 1939) moved to Lackawaxen in 1905. From his home on the Upper Delaware, Zane began his writing career, becoming known as the “Father of the Western Novel”. • Bird Watching – The Upper Delaware is a good location for Eagle watching. ne telltale sign that Winter has transitioned to Spring is birds singing in the morning when you wake up. There are hundreds of different bird species in the county alone and organizations like the Basha Kill Area Association (BKAA) and Sullivan County Audubon Society highlight the areas where you could find information about birding in the county. Sullivan County resident Scott Garber was first introduced to birding in 1982 when taking a class called “Field and Natural History” at SUNY

Orange. For the past 37 years, Garber has been an active birder and hosts a birding program with the BKAA, “Birding for Beginners” each year. “I just became obsessed with it very quickly,” said Garber who after that course, took an additional course at SUNY Orange that delved more into birds called “Avian Biology.” “We were in the field about 90 percent of the time [in that class], and I went out on my own a lot also,” said Garber. “I just spent hours and hours near my home where I was told of good birding spots.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 64

WHERE TO BEGIN? Birding is a pastime or hobby—for some, it is a full-time job—that does not need a substantial investment. According to Garber, a person can do well with just a $250 pair of binoculars and fielding books. The Audubon Society also suggests adding a waterproof notebook to take with you on outings. In today’s birding world, cell phone apps can take the place of a field book out in the wild. Garber still prefers carrying a fielding book

around but says the cell phone apps have come a long way. Garber recommends going on a couple of bird walks with experienced birders. “That way you don’t have to worry about knowing what you are looking at, the experienced birder will tell you,” said Garber. “The leader of the group can point out things to you and explain a lot of the things you would typically look in a book for,” he added. Websites like eBird, Audubon and the Merlin Bird ID, offer free apps that not only tell you what kind of bird you saw but lets you keep track of

Before apps, most research was done from field guides and books on the subject. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I would take out various books from the library and take notes from the book onto a notepad to summarize things,â&#x20AC;? said Garber. Birding also helps with conservation efforts globally with sites like eBird. The birding site is a joint project by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Audubon that allows bird-

ers to track what they saw directly from the field and to upload them in real time to the site. Keeping track of what you see out in the field is sometimes called, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Listingâ&#x20AC;? and can be a competitive and attractive feature to birding. The birder can enter when, where and how they went birding, and then they can fill out a checklist of all the birds seen and heard on the trip. According to eBird, â&#x20AC;&#x153;listingâ&#x20AC;? is the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest biodiversity-related citizen science project with more than 100 million bird sightings each year from around the world. WHERE TO BIRD IN SULLIVAN COUNTY?

According to eBird, one of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;hotspotsâ&#x20AC;? in the county is the Basha Kill Wildlife Management Area. Over 250 species have been spotted at the wetland area in Mamakating which is about half of all the birds seen in the eastern part of the country, according to Basha Kill Area Association (BKAA). This Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) protected land lays between the Shawangunk Mountains and the Catskills. The waters flow south from Summitville to join the Neversink River below the wetlands, and on to the Delaware River, according to the BKAA. On advice from his professor, Garber connected with the Sullivan County Audubon Society (SCAS) where he met like-minded birding enthusiasts. There he was able to go on outings with the club and in doing so, learned how to identify birds, coupled with his field guides.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Being part of a birding community is helpful,â&#x20AC;? said Garber. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fun, and you meet up with people who you enjoy meeting with. You can learn things and can find good spots for birding.â&#x20AC;? When a rare bird is sighted, sites like eBird send an email blast on where and when the bird was seen. For Garber, when someone saw a rare bird or large flock back in the 80s, the notification came by telephone or by running into someone you know. These days, Garber is not as active as he was in the past with the SCAS, but he still participates in events like the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Christmas Bird Countâ&#x20AC;? and the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Break-a-Hundredâ&#x20AC;? Weekend. On that weekend, birders compete to see which team can see the most birds in 24 hours. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a fascination when we see birds that [we] donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see every day,â&#x20AC;? said Garber. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All birds are beautifulâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;some I suppose are more outwardly beautiful to the average eye.â&#x20AC;? birds.” Garber uses eBird on occasion to track rare birds or when he is away on holiday in a different part of the country or world. “Most always, I bring my binoculars on the trip,” said Garber. Recently, golfing has peaked Garber’s interest and he has found it is not easy to golf and bird at the same time.

“I try to see stuff on the course especially if I saw something unusual. I carry a monocular,” said Garber. “Once I know for sure what the bird is, then I get to spend more time enjoying it and appreciate what I am seeing,” said Garber. “For new birders, I would recommend going on field trips with the Audubon Society or the Basha Kill Area Association,” said Garber.
