walk this way he Callicoon ArtWalk will be held on Saturday, October 12 from noon-8 p.m. If you are a local artist and have work you would like displayed or if you would like to be involved as a volunteer please email events.callicoon@gmail.com. The Callicoon Artwalk is a platform for showcasing local art, theater, dance, music, poetry and film. It is a free event and a major force for developing cultural initiatives in Callicoon and the County. Businesses throughout the hamlet of Callicoon will display work by local artists, and the event will highlight the arts in unconventional spaces throughout the hamlet including storefronts and public areas. This year FarmArts Collective will perform excerpts from their newest play –– SHAKESPEARE ON THE FARM directed by Tannis Kowalchuk, in locations throughout the hamlet. The ensemble will also be offering a stiltwalking workshop in Callicoon Creek Park, with stilts generously donated by NACL. The Callicoon Theater will screen a block of short films curated by Elizabeth Ennis. In the afternoon you can catch a screening of the full-length documentary “My Autonomous

Neighbor,” directed by Michel Negroponte and featuring Roscoe artist Fred “Tate” Billings. In the evening the theater will show an animation block curated by Seth Feinberg. Street art installations will be created by local teens from the Sullivan West Art Department. Look out for public art works made of paper, string, chalk and cardboard. There will also be live performances by two local dance companies, LAVA Dance and the Catskill Dance Company. Both will be showcasing original choreography. Live music can be heard at various locations throughout Upper and Lower Main Streets. A Poet’s corner will feature local writers. Creative games to open your imagination will take place at Adella Dori Cafe. A paintby-numbers scavenger hunt will delight visitors, while a community art project at the Train Depot will be created throughout the day by anyone willing to pick up a brush. This event is sponsored by The Callicoon Business Association, the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, John H. Eschenberg Inc, Litt Home, The Dime Bank, Jeff Bank, Wayne Bank, Foster Supply Hospitality, Mike Pries Insurance and the Callicoon Wine Merchant. FA L L 2 0 1 9

She has always been drawn to the arts. Duke attended a fine arts school in the city, where she did a lot of painting. Later as a full-time mom, Duke attended a mother and son pottery class. She enjoyed the experience so much that she decided she needed to come back on her own. Twenty-six years ago Duke and her family relocated to Sullivan County. A few years later, she decided to be part of the Catskill Art Society’s Studio Art Tour. When she started selling her work, she decided to stay open. And because she had the space, she invited other makers to be part of the studio, especially local farmers. What started as a hobby quickly turned into Duke’s full-time profession, and she’s since made thousands of pieces, ranging from bowls, vases, plates and dinnerware. Her method of choice is hand building. “I can do this anywhere,” she said. “I like starting with a ball of clay and seeing what happens. I figured if I got tired of it I’d switch to the wheel.

stones. “It’s very important to me that my work looks different than the work of other people,” she says. Duke’s creativity is also on display during the firing process. She’s fired some pieces in a metal trash can, and others are done in a Raku kiln. Duke Pottery is currently open by appointment, so make sure to call ahead and set up a time to swing by. At the shop you’ll not only find Carolyn’s one of a kind pottery, but some incredible work from local artists, including her husband Dana, an accomplished photographer. They also carry products from local farms (maple syrup, raw honey, wool, fresh pasta, lotions, soaps, jams and more). It’s a great time to pay a visit because … as they say … it’s never too early to get a start on your holiday shopping. Not to mention there are few places better than Duke’s property to experience the beautiful Catskill fall foliage. And who knows, maybe you’ll join the many returning faces to Duke Pottery. “It’s very gratifying to me when people visit every year,” says Duke. “Whoever they gave that [initial] piece of pottery to wants another. It’s nice when people appreciate your work.” 16

In addition to the great pottery, if you visit the Duke’s property, you’ll get spectacular views of fall foliage in the Catskills. It will certainly take your breath away. Carolyn Duke’s love of pottery started with one class when she was living in the city. It has now morphed into her full-time profession.
