ach year local residents and visitors head to 107 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro to see a dazzling display that evokes the holiday spirit. For years, Canal Towne Emporium has presented Dance of the Lights. The show runs from the day after Thanksgiving (November 29) to Christmas Eve.The 15-minute long show will run once every night at 7 p.m. This is the first year with their new lighting system, with four new songs and new effects that will be added to every year. This year’s show is dedicated to Michael Roosa, the original creator and designer of the show, who has retired from those duties, but still helps out as an advisor. Canal Towne is open from November 29 through Christmas Eve from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturdays, as well as on Sundays and Christmas Eve from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. And the light show is presented even when the store is not open. ift shops are few and far between these days as online retailers continue to present a challenge. However, in spite of these obstacles, some have been able to stand the test of time because of the personal attention they provide and relationships with customers that you simply cannot build online. The Wildlife Gift Shop on Main Street in Livingston Manor, which was opened by Shirley Fulton in 1985, is an example of such a shop. H O L I DAY 2 0 1 9

For nearly 35 years the Wildlife Gift Shop has reflected the country and outdoor spirit of the area. If you have an animal lover in your family, there’s a number of lovely gift options to choose from with our favorite critters on them. From mugs to dreamcatchers, socks, etc. The shop also has a number of locally-made items for sale including jewelry which also make great gifts.

Fulton never thought she’d still be going soon-to-be 35 years later. But her customers keep coming back, whether it’s to shop or just catch up with Fulton. “I like being here, and all the people,” she says. “But I never thought the shop would turn into this.” Wildlife Gift Shop is one of only three gift shops that remain in Sullivan County. Fulton, a fourth generation Shandelee resident, has always been fascinated by wildlife and she decided to make that the theme of the shop. Why? “Because we’re in wildlife,” she says. And her first store sign featured a H O L I DAY 2 0 1 9

raccoon on it. Today wildlife is still a core theme of the shop, with many items featuring animals or birds on it. But the theme is also heavily influenced by a country style, which is reflective of Livingston Manor and the surrounding area. Fulton puts in the time to find unique items that she knows her customers –– made up of both locals and tourists –– will love, and keeps them at an affordable price. She still gets excited by all of the new items and ideas people come up with. continued on page 14

Unlike the treasures inside, the Wildlife Gift Shop isn’t hard to find. It’s right on Livingston Manor’s Main Street. continued from page 13

WILDLIFE GIFT SHOP

The Wildlife Gift Shop offers a number of suncatchers, decorative hand towels, baby items, cookie cutters, books, jewelry, soaps, Christmas bulbs, cards for any occasion and more! Fulton is also a talented painter and has several of her pieces for sale at the shop that would be perfect in your home. So stop by. And don’t be surprised if you leave with gifts for the entire family this holiday season.

5 Main Street, Livingston Manor 12758 (845) 439-3938 Open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. www.facebook.com/Wildlife-GiftShop-167858693424425/
