Originally the site of Roscoe’s old firehouse, the brick building on 10 Union Street, was given new life in 2012 when founder and distiller Brian Facquet began working on what eventually became the Prohibition Distillery.

distilled thrills rom 1920 to 1933, a nationwide constitutional ban, or Prohibition, was placed on the production, importation, transportation and sale of alcoholic beverages in the United States after “dry” crusaders led a movement to cure what they deemed “an ill society.” But as with any movement or law, there were rebels beneath the surface who continued distilling in secret: in underground caves, in the deep woods, sometimes in their homes. These people became known as bootleggers. So when Brian Facquet quit his job in the corporate world to start distilling, he took inspiration from this era in history, naming his up-and-coming craft spirit brand, Bootlegger 21 New York; Twenty-one standing for the 21st Amendment which repealed Prohibition. It was in essence, his salute to the era in

which he was now connected to. He also named his business, which is run out of the original brick firehouse in Roscoe, Prohibition Distillery. “This was a firehouse that was built in 1929 and served as a firehouse until a few years before we took it over. It was flooded at one point, so when we came into the building it obviously didn't look like it does now. It was being used for storage. But it was cool. I saw something beautiful in it,” stated Facquet as he looked around the distilling area. “I had passed through the Catskills over the years, but I had never really spent much time in this part of the mountains. When I met with local business owners, they couldn’t have been more welcoming. I remember shaking hands with them and saying, if the town thinks we would be a great addition to it, then I’ll make J U LY / A U G U S T 2 0 1 9

the move. I am happy we made that decision.” So in 2012, Facquet made the move to Roscoe and began working on what he had envisioned for the old firehouse when he first stepped foot inside. Facquet is the founder and distiller, but has investors in the business and looked to family for support. His father, Philip Facquet, Jr., is his Chief Operating Officer and commutes up to Roscoe from his home in Long Island to work at the distillery during the week. One of his sisters Kim Powell handles accounting and his other sister Julie Klimchack works in sales, and he now has nine local employees that have become a part of the family team. “I think I have one of the best teams. For the most part they had no experience in the industry. I like to think of this as an apprenticeship for everybody,” said Facquet. “I’ve been really fortunate. They care about what they do, they care about their job, and they care about the distillery.” A graduate of St. Anthony’s High School in 1991, a student of the Naval Academy and a graduate of Stony Brook University, Facquet continued on page 12

People loved the toy store, we had a lot of inventory, and it was fun.” But as the years went on they began to outgrow the shop as Andrea’s culinary pas-

sion began to surface. They ended up dividing the toy store space to create a small bookshop and cafe. “People loved the food and we were only doing a little bit at that time, so we thought maybe we should add a dinner menu,” stated Tim. “It was a hit. Andrea is from Brazil, so the food she makes has a South American influence. The food is infused with Latin flavor.” Andrea also has a French culinary school background, so the way she styles and continued on page 20

plates her dishes is inspired by French cuisine, while the flavors and ingredients stem back to her childhood in Brazil. And so, the Samba Cafe/Marketplace was born. It is both a cafe and espresso bar as well as a gift store, and they still have other ideas coming to fruition. “Everything is homemade, made right here by me, and all of our dishes are made in small batches,” Andrea smiled proudly. “I pick and get everything fresh every week, so I don’t have a walk-in cooler or anything like

that, and the menu changes all the time depending on what ingredients I can get.” You can sense the passion put into Andrea’s cooking just by the delicious smells that permeate your nose as you open the door, inviting you inside, while the colors of the walls and the furniture light up your eyes. Brunch is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and dinner is 5-9 p.m. Andrea prepares anything from an Artisan Cheese Board to flatbreads, patatas bravas, sticky fried chicken wings, garlic shrimp with local sweet corn, and saucisson en croute. Whatever you order, they’ve got a wine to match, and you can sit outside or inside. “To me this place feels more like a place where friends gather than a restaurant,” said Andrea, “and I love that.” A cozy reading nook below a painting by the late E. Here’s what is going on locally to commemorate the iconic event’s Golden Anniversary! Callicoon pays tribute The Inaugural Callicoon PorchFest 2019 will be a 3day music and art festival commemorating the spirit of Woodstock 69’ which took place just 12 miles away in Bethel, NY. The event will feature over 50 performances, presented on front porches, stoops, lawns of and public spaces throughout the picturesque and historic hamlet of Callicoon on the Delaware. This event will assemble the best local and national talent, in a block-party setting celebrating community through music, art, poetry, film, and performance. Dozens of spaces in Callicoon including private homes and businesses will be turned into performing arts venues with musicians performing various types of music to include: Blues, Bluegrass, Country, Folk, Rock, and Jazz.

The PorchFest concept was originally conceived in 2007 in Ithaca, NY, as an opportunity to celebrate the sense of community and creativity. Callicoon’s PorchFest will celebrate that same sense of community and creativity that has brought artists to the area since 1969 and the past several decades. Starting on Friday, August 16 – the celebration will begin with a Callicoon Block Party featuring music at Callicoon Brewing Company, Rafters Tavern, The Western Supper Club and outdoor porches on Lower and Upper Main Streets. The following bands and musicians will be featured on Friday from 6-10 PM. Yard Sale Band, Crier Brothers, Brotality, Fisher & Kean, Hal Galper Trio, with Drum Circle led by Deerheart Drumming and Fire Dance performance by Raina Bowers and Co. On Saturday, homes and businesses will serve as stages from noon to 8 PM presenting artists, ranging from Bluegrass to Blues to Rock and Soul. Several bands will pay tribute to the music of Woodstock 69. Celebrate Woodstock early in the Town of Bethel On Saturday, July 27, the Town of Bethel is hosting an event for the ages! As part of their 50th anniversary of the 1969 Woodstock Festival celebration, the town will be hosting a parade, live music and free outdoor movie on July 27.
