t’s easy to see – literally – why people return to Bridle Hill Farm. The rolling green fields are interrupted only by tall trees and white fences, in between which meander all manner of horses and ponies. This is the kind of farm you’ve dreamed about, high atop a hill offering panoramas of yet more farms and fields. And by the time your day is over, you’ll feel like you’re part of the farm, thanks to the hands-on approach of Bridle Hill’s owners Dan and Elinor Young and their talented team – previous experience with horses and farms not required!
I
“We take all ages,” says Elinor as she brushes one of the 11 specially-selected horses available to the public. “Eighty-five to 90 percent of our customers are first-timers,” adds Dan. “They’ve just got to be able to sit on the horse on their own.” Up to eight people at a time can set out with a trail guide across Bridle Hill’s 35 scenic acres, any time of the year under virtually any daytime weather conditions. The gentle horses and ponies don’t mind the rain or the cold. “We’ll go out in anything, except hail and thunderstorms,” Elinor affirms. But there’s far more to Bridle Hill than
saddle up on the hill
Relish the fresh air and wide-open spaces of Bridle Hill Farm’s 35 acres amidst the hills above Jeffersonville, NY. Board and ride your own horse here, or take a guided trail ride, or host a private birthday party or wedding in one of the most scenic spots in the Catskills! You can even catch horse shows both outside and within Bridle Hill’s spacious arena.
simply horse and pony rides. You can learn all there is to know about riding, boarding and caring for horses; send your kids to afterschool and summer camp programs; watch and participate in equestrian events; or even find the perfect spot for your wedding or birthday party. Stay outdoors amidst the splendor of what was long ago the Hemmer dairy farm, or head inside to the enormous, 144’x80’ solarpowered riding arena, with plenty of room for humans and horses.

Just remember: this is a busy farm, so anything more than a quick visit needs to be set up in advance, either online or via telephone (845-482-3993). C AT S K I L L S C O N F I D E N T I A L

alk about a destination ... The Woodstock festival and Bethel Woods Center for the Arts are no longer Bethel, NY’s only claims to fame. Have you stopped by the Catskill Distilling Company and sampled their awardwinning spirits? (It was voted Best Distillery in NY by the Village Voice, People Choice 2014) How about the Dancing Cat Saloon right next door, where a great meal can be enjoyed indoors and out, with views of the rolling countryside and the live sounds of area bands? Have you wandered across Route 17B to the Stray Cat Gallery to view the photos, sculptures and paintings of some of the region’s most talented artists? Or literally gone to The Store Next Door to indulge in a bit of antiques shopping? All this is the handiwork of Stacy Cohen and Monte Sachs and their staff, led by Chief Business Development Officer Dr. Pietro Bortolotti. The local couple have melded Bethel’s rural agricultural roots with its near-50-year status as a musical Mecca, producing an entirely unique series of attractions that promise to tickle any fancy. “The bottom line is, we make a good product here,” says Monte, whose distilling prowess has produced Peace Vodka, Most Righteous Bourbon, Defiant Rye, Curious Gin, One & Only Buckwheat, among others. Their spirits are available at the distillery with a tour and a tasting at the restored 1939 World’s Fair Bar via the long gone Jeff Lake Inn and are also distributed throughout NY State and beyond. “We still have a process that is artisanal,” adds Pietro, a native of Italy who has brought his considerable skills (and a Ph.D. in economics) to bear on this complex. The Cat Stills Café is the newest addition to the Distillery, pairing light meals with signature drinks. But what they produce goes beyond spirits made of locally-sourced grains. The tasting room in the distillery, for example, has become one of the prime spots to catch up-and-coming musical talent in the region. “We want to be here for the local community which is unique 2nd home community and the visitors,” explains Stacy, who grew up in the Catskills. The Stray Cat Gallery and The Store Next Door are full of the work of talented artists and craftsmen, be they modern paintings and sculptures or an array of guitars and mandolins and assorted antiques. the Stray Cat Gallery, including signed exclusive images of the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival by Jason Laure – and more of Paul Stark’s amazing wood carvings. An example of his custom carving is evident in the Cat Pole found in the dining room of the Saloon featuring 20 cats happily playing music. Chances are you’ll be introduced to far more than good food, drink and art, thanks to Stacy and Monte’s neighbor: Bethel Woods. “The people who come to visit the Museum at Bethel Woods are from all over the world,” says Stacy – and they make it a point to also stop by the Distillery, Saloon, Gallery and Store. “I love the people that we serve and meet" she adds with a wide smile. “They are such an eclectic group!” To find out how to make your own memorable visit, check out catskilldistilling.com and dancingcatsaloon.com or call 845-583-3141.
Bring home a memento of your visit to Bethel with a locally-created photo, painting or sculpture from the Stray Cat Gallery (top right). Antique dishware and furniture fill The Store Next Door (above), and Stacy may even entertain an offer on this gorgeously detailed cash register (above right)! Afterwards, relax on a curving bench underneath the trees lining 17B, the path to Woodstock. 14 C AT S K I L L S

this is the year to head n evening at the Forestburgh Playhouse is an unforgettable experience. Reviewers have commented that the Playhouse provides “Broadway in the Catskills,” and they are right! The Forestburgh Playhouse, a professional and celebrated regional theatre in Sullivan County, NY, is celebrating its 69th season. In 1947, a troupe of actors from Greenwich Village came to the Catskills in search of a place to make theatre happen. They found an old barn and transformed it into what is now known as the Forestburgh Play-
A
house. New Producer Franklin Trapp is carrying on the tradition of his predecessors and presenting a season full of blockbuster hits for all to enjoy. “Damn Yankees,” Mel Brooks’ zany hit “Young Frankenstein,” “Oliver!” “Music Man,” “42nd Street,” “The Fantasticks” and “Driving Miss Daisy” starring Loretta Swit from the hit television series “M*A*S*H” are all sure to delight audiences. June 16-28: “Damn Yankees” A light, fast-paced, and devilishly clever home-run musical comedy hit! Baseball never sounded better!
July 28-August 9: “The Music Man” Seventy-six Trombones at the Forestburgh Playhouse – “The Music Man” is family entertainment at its best! This story of con man extraordinaire Harold Hill features an irresistible score: “Goodnight, My Someone,” “Till There Was You,” “Shipoopee,” and more. This sunny, funny slice of red, white, and blue Americana is sure to delight! A feel-good hit!
June 30-July 12: Mel Brooks’ “Young Frankenstein” From the genius of Mel Brooks and the creators of the record-breaking Broadway sensation “The Producers” comes this monster new musical comedy. The trademark wacky humor of Mel Brooks, matched by his equally wacky and clever songs, turn this story of a misunderstood monster into the funniest event of the summer. A laugh riot! July 14-26: “Oliver!” Take one plucky orphan searching for a home, add great songs, plenty of laughs, and one over-the-top villain, and you’ve got “Oliver!” the perfect show for the whole family! And those great songs include classics like “Food, Glorious Food,” “I’d Do Anything,” “Where is Love?,” “Consider Yourself,” “As Long As He Needs Me,” and so many more! Not to be missed!
