By Franklin Trapp

n the mid-1940s, a group of actors from New York City traveled to the town of Forestburgh and turned a barn into a theatre. Today, the Forestburgh Playhouse, the Catskills’ premier professional theatre, is thrilled to celebrate its 70th Anniversary Season! To ring in its Platinum Anniversary, the Playhouse has pulled out all the stops, presenting an exciting lineup of shows never before seen on the Forestburgh Playhouse stage! The lineup includes a wonderful mixture of shows, including classics like “Anything Goes” and “To Kill a Mockingbird,” the genius of Stephen Sondheim in “Into the Woods,” some ‘60s music from across the pond in “Shout,” hilarious comedy for all ages in “The Addams Family,” and of course some rock-n-roll in “The Who’s Tommy” and “Rock of Ages.” Don’t forget about the Forestburgh Children’s Theatre Performances! This year, the Playhouse is presenting Roald Dahl’s “Willy Wonka.”This timeless and wacky tale is a must-see for kids and adults alike! Join Charlie as he ventures through Wonka’s fantastic chocolate factory—a scrumdidilyumptious treat for all! “Willy Wonka” runs every Thursday and Saturday at 11 a.m. starting June 23 and ending August 20. In addition to the shows, the Play-

house has some beautiful new changes in store for the patrons. This year, the Playhouse is unveiling comfortable, brand-new seats, a newly renovated lobby, and more! Right next door, the Forestburgh Tavern is keeping pace with the Playhouse by offering an exciting, brand-new menu created by Executive Chef Jill Padua, specialty cocktail offerings and of course, our classic cabaret performances. Patrons can stop by the Forestburgh Tavern for a cabaret and dinner before the show Tuesday through Thursday or come to a late night cabaret after the show on Fridays and Saturdays. To round out the year, the Forestburgh Tavern will be presenting its annual Fall Series! Every weekend this fall from Labor Day until Halloween Weekend, the Forestburgh Tavern will be presenting exciting musical events, local bands, cabarets, and for a second year in a row,“The Rocky Horror Show” – live on stage! Last year was a sellout, so don’t miss the show at the Tavern, October 28-29! Number 70 is truly going to be a banner year for the Playhouse, so don’t miss it!

Kauneonga Lake is planning a party, by Dan Hust

“W

here the heck is Kauneonga Lake?” Moreen Lerner, Daryl Kroken, and Alex Johnson heard that so often that they and a team of volunteers determined to make sure everybody – everybody – knows how to find downtown Kauneonga Lake, NY. “What’s already here is a great energy and a really great community,” Daryl says. Alex and his gift shop, River House, anchors the western end of a cute, walkable

business district, where a row of restaurants, like Fat Lady Café, Benji and Jake’s, The Barrio Kitchen, and The Local Table and Tap line the shore of the lake itself. On the same street is Lizard Bytes, while up the hill is Knit One and Sorella. Summer is when this gem of a downtown truly comes alive, so June is the perfect time to discover what you’ve been missing. Make that visit on June 19 – the day Kauneonga Lake gets put back on the map! “The theme of the day is the ‘60s,” says

J U N E / J U LY 2 0 1 6

and you’re invited! Alex, who invites both visitors and locals to come to the Kauneonga Block Party dressed in their favorite ‘60s attire (or just as you are). This is a party with all you’d expect – live music from local performers, fresh food from area restaurants, unique arts and crafts from the region’s most talented residents, even a signature drink created by Bethel’s own Catskill Distilling Company. The grooviness goes way beyond that, however. This block party comes with pontoon boat rides and a regatta on Kauneonga

Lake, in collaboration with Payne’s Water Sports boat rentals. The boats will be decorated in a variety of psychedelic ‘60s styles, all competing for prizes. Kids of every age will love it as Partymaster will bring its best bouncy houses. There’ll even be an exotic-animal petting zoo! Downtown roads will be closed, making it easy to walk, rollerskate, dance, and snap flower-power selfies with friends and neighbors. Municipal lot parking with a free shutcontinued on page 10

tle will be available just up NYS Route 55. The party starts at noon on Sunday, June 19, running till 7 that evening. To find out more before you go, visit facebook.com/kauneongablockparty. By the way, there’s more to come ... “We hope it’s not just a block party, but an introduction to the beauty of Kauneonga Lake,” affirms Moreen, the volunteer organizer of this inaugural outing. “We’re looking to perpetuate this area as a destination!” And perhaps this could be the next best event held in the Town of Bethel!

Just the right blend of ingredients M Story and photos by Dan Hust

FACING PAGE, TOP: Matthew’s on Main has been a staple of downtown Callicoon, NY for more than a decade – and there’s good reason for that longevity. From the ambience inside to the atmosphere outside, this is a uniquely wonderful spot to enjoy brunch, lunch and dinner. FACING PAGE, BOTTOM: One of the most popular dishes at Matthew’s is the sesame-crusted salmon with a soy ginger glaze, served with basmati rice, orange tomato salad and farmers’ market vegetable (in this case, fresh asparagus). ABOVE: Enjoy the company of friends amidst the shaded setting of Matthew’s deck, overlooking the local farmers’ market.

atthew’s on Main spans city and country as comfortably as owners Matthew Lanes and Dominique Jenkins. The bar area of this Callicoon, NY destination is thoroughly country, the language as earnest and earthy as the dark wood trim that gives it that definitive saloon feel. The dining room – with its cool blue color scheme, eclectic imagery and bare-wire track lighting – is a brighter atmosphere, though no less energetic on weekends. And then there’s the inviting outdoor deck, which mixes urban sophistication with the natural beauty of the Upper Delaware River Valley. Sit back under the shade of spreading tree branches while you enjoy Tonjes Dairy cheeses and a Roscoe Beer Company ale. Matt grew up in Manhattan, where he honed his culinary skills at such familiar NYC locations as Raoul’s and Gourmet Garage. He also spent a year cooking and working on a French farm. “I didn’t go to cooking school,” he surprisingly relates. “I went to art school at Cornell.” He married his high school sweetheart, Dominique, and in 1994 they started spending weekends in the country. A fellow Cornell graduate in ag economics, she loved the area as much as he, and eventually they moved here full-time. “I don’t miss the city at all,” Matt says – though he does return regularly for Broadway shows and art exhibits. “I love New York, but I just like the country.” That’s reflected in his cooking, which since 2003 has been pleasing palates via Matthew’s on Main – complemented by Dominique’s personal greeting of guests. “I’m ‘back of the house,’ she’s ‘front of the house,’” he shares. Together, they create a must-visit destination, be it just for a beer after work continued on page 21

or a stylish night out. “It’s like a nice, eclectic country bistro,” Matt explains. “We’ve got something for everyone.” Locally raised quail, lamb, poultry and pork accompany generous portions of fresh (and equally local) vegetables, cheeses and honey – often spending just minutes in the delivery truck before reaching Matthew’s. The menu caters to vegetarians, the budget-conscious and kids as easily as it does those looking for the best steak and wine regardless of price. Matthew’s also caters off-site and in an upstairs private party room. You can sense Matt and Dominique’s love of the business the moment you step in to their business. “There’s nothing more aggravating, but there’s nothing more liberating,” he acknowledges. “I cook seven days a week – it’s what I like doing.”

Matthew’s on Main 19 Lower Main Street Callicoon, NY 845-887-5636 matthewsonmain.com Also on Facebook (where specials and menu changes are posted every Friday) Open for lunch and dinner 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Sundays, with brunch an additional offering on Saturdays and Sundays. For brunch, try the to-die-for crepes, the eggs and omelets with sauteed spinach and smoked salmon, the made-from-scratch pancakes, the Challah French toast, or a plate of fresh fruit and homemade granola. Lunch choices include Brazilian-style black bean chili with linguica sausage, burgers and fries, sandwiches that include chicken salad and Cubans, and the best quesadillas you’ll ever taste. Dinner ranges from the deliciously simple grilled chicken breast with herb butter to the popular beet & goat cheese salad to steaks, locally sourced lamb chops and quail, sesamecrusted salmon, and spinach ravioli topped with wild leek and a Parmesan pesto. June 16 A spring luncheon will be held at the Roscoe Presbyterian Church, from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m, featuring salads and strawberry shortcake, for $8.50. Proceeds benefit the church. Rights, Race & Revolutions: Don’t miss this compelling photography exhibit of LIFE magazine photographer Grey Villet, who traveled America and the world for LIFE magazine like an observant explorer, mapping its emotional contours in the faces and lives of its people. His in-depth, personal studies of the American scene of the 1950s and ’60s illuminated the complex reality of those years with a truth that, in his own words, were “as real as real could get.” His images of presidents and revolutionaries, sports heroes, and everyday people struggling for their rights tell an emotional and compelling story of an era that shaped the present. Much of George’s sculptures are whimsical and humorous, taking common or familiar items and arranging them into new works that challenge most conventional thinking and ideas.
