Despite the Villa Roma’s sprawling grounds, only one wedding is hosted at a time. “It’s truly all about you,” affirms Katie. “It’s your day.” And that of your guests, who have access to the indoor and outdoor pools (the latter in-

season), the indoor bowling alley, basketball and handball courts (indoors as well), the ski hill, the go-karts, bouncy houses, saunas, cafés, the golf course, and a nightclub with nightly entertainment. “We like to consider ourselves a cruise ship on land,” laughs Katie. “So the party doesn’t have to end!” Got kids? Childcare, an on-site camp and even private babysitting are all available when continued on page 8

join in nature . . . and be awed W hat could possibly draw you out into the bone-chilling cold of a Catskills winter? How about the sight of a bald eagle regally soaring above – or, even more breathtaking, diving to earth, only to suddenly swing skyward with a fish in its talons? The Delaware Highlands Conservancy can give you that thrilling experience, in a group or on your own. Indeed, eagle-watching has become just about the most popular reason to visit our neck of the Catskills woods this time of year! To visit at your pace, the Conservancy’s Upper Delaware Visitor Center (176 Scenic Drive, Lackawaxen, PA) will be open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. throughout January and February. Stop by to pick up a map and directions to the observation areas, watch a short film, view interpretive exhibits and speak with volunteers. Also on weekends in January and February, volunteers will be staffing observation areas throughout the region. The map is available at www.delawarehighlands.org/eagles/eaglewatching/map. And don’t miss Eagle Day! From 1-4 p.m. on January 23, the Conservancy and Talen Energy will host a free afternoon of fun for the whole family at the Wallenpaupack Environmental Learning Center in Hawley, PA. Enjoy “Live Birds of Prey” presentations with Bill Streeter of the Delaware Valley Raptor Center (at 1 and 3 p.m.) and handson activities provided by Lacawac Sanctuary for all ages to learn about eagles and other native birds. Try eagle-watching with a group for an even better experience! Four bus tours are scheduled: January 16 and 30, February 6 and 13, with departure times at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. all four days (from the Visitor Center

in Lackawaxen). Learn about eagles in our region, how they returned from the brink of extinction, and the habitat they need to thrive, while you take a scenic drive with an expert guide on a heated bus and look for eagles. Bus seats are limited, and reservations are required; call 570-226-3164, 845-583-1010, or email info@delawarehighlands.org to reserve your spot – $20 for non-members; $15 for members. Dress warmly in layers and wear waterproof boots. Bring binoculars, a camera, snacks, and a bagged lunch. Note: Refunds are not issued unless the trip is cancelled due to weather on both Saturday and the typical Sunday snow date. The complete calendar of events is viewable at www.delawarehighlands.org/newsevents/eventdates.

hen Kristal Whitmore bought and reopened the bowling alley in Callicoon, NY, she had more in mind than just bringing bowling back to this stretch of the upper Delaware River valley. She wanted to create a destination for anyone and everyone who likes a good time and a great meal. Thus was born Callicoon Kristal Bowl and truly “the best-kept secret in Sullivan County.” “We didn’t want just bar food,” she remembers, nearly five years later. “We

Callicoon Kristal Bowl is certainly a great place to bowl (as local league player and lifelong bowler Gregg Burton, below, demonstrates). But it’s also a great place to eat, including this Cuban sandwich with a side of corn pudding.

wanted people to come in and sit down and enjoy their meal. We wanted good food!” Working with her former chef, Southernborn Steve Mutter, Kristal used her and his personal recipes to make that dream a tasty reality, and Kristal Bowl’s menu is mouth-watering proof. Tops on the appetizers list are the po-

tato salad fritters – breaded, deep fried, served with spicy aioli and just as delicious as they sound. Grabbing the #1 spot for entrees are the ribs – the absolute best you’ll find for many, many miles around – slow-cooked in an outdoor, wood-fired smoker and served on their own or slathered in homemade sauces called Callicoon Heat, Bourbon Molasses, Honey Garlic, Thai, Teriyaki, and Salt & Vinegar. Match them with some corn pudding, and you’ll swear you’re deep in the heart of western North Carolina, from whence these dishes originate. There’s plenty else to sample, as well, from appetizers like quesadillas, nachos (including a meat-lover’s variety) and fried pickles, to smaller-size dishes like homemade chicken tenders, Reuben and Cuban sandwiches, shrimp in a basket, and mac-and-cheese. Burgers, hot dogs, pizza and fries are of-

Go fancy, go casual – there’s no one way to enjoy Kristal Bowl! Taste a coquito (Puerto Ricanstyle eggnog) atop a bar inlaid with coins and bottlecaps (left), or sink your teeth into a homemade pizza. And don’t miss the ribs (woodsmoked outdoors, below). Try them all inside the Marilyn Monroe-themed party room (bottom, offering a slightly quieter spot than on the bowling lanes) whilst sitting on authentic church pews

Not a bowler? Video games and billiards are available, too (top), but you really ought to give those colorful balls a spin (some real, some “decorated,” below). fered, of course, but for a truly memorable experience, pair a sliced beef brisket or pulled pork/chicken sandwich with some sweet potato waffle fries and a cup of Kristal’s homemade potato or macaroni salad. Looking for lighter? Soups, salads and veggie burgers can be ordered on their own. Or have Kristal bake one of her legendary cakes ordered in advance , and pick it up with the rest of your takeout order. Then again, how often do you get the chance to enjoy a great meal inside a bowling alley? Whether it’s just you or a whole birthday celebration, Kristal and her crew – which includes daughter Brianna, Reed Ganyor, Kenzie, Karen, Tom, and Tanya – can find you a spot in the Marilyn Monroe party room, at the full-service bar, or perched above the 10 bowling lanes, offering you a chance to cheer on the professional bowlers, chuckle at the amateurs, and be thoroughly charmed by the little kids determined to score that spare. You might even get a chance to chat with Kristal. “I was always a people-person,” she explains, “and I enjoy interacting with everybody.” WINTER 2016
