Former LPGA professional golfer Sherri Steinhauer takes questions from the Fallsburg Varsity Girls Golf Team during their visit to her ‘Memorabilia Room,” located at her summer residence in Neversink. The ladies used that inspiration – and a few putting tips from ‘the pro’ – to go out and win their fifth straight divisional title last spring.

elieve in yourself...the world is yours to do as you please....enjoy and have fun in the process,” retired 53-year-old Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) golfer Sherri Steinhauer told the Fallsburg girls’ golf team following last year’s visit to her Memorabilia Room located in her seasonal home in the Town of Neversink. When asked about their tour, Fallsburg coach Brian Garber noted that the Memorabilia Room, “is on her property in Neversink and I was 10 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2016

blown away with how welcoming she was towards my golf team. “Sherri was great – she answered all of the students’ questions, reflected on some career highlights and even let the girls putt on her indoor green,” Garber noted. Garber pointed out that Steinhauer, “has an amazing collection of personal memorabilia from her days as a young player all the way through college and her professional career.” The Memorabilia room “is filled to the brim with trophies, awards, plaques, player bags, scorecards,

photos with celebrities, leaderboards and anything else you can imagine that is golf related,” Garber said. “The visit to see Sherri Steinhauer was truly an honor and it was wonderful to see how she came to be an excellent golfer,” said Fallsburg team member Katelyn McCarthy. “Before visiting her I didn’t really value golf and after [the visit] I really came to realize that it is truly a lifetime sport… and it is one of the most calming and relaxing sports, despite getting into sticky situations.” Madison Levine, who graduated last spring, said, “It was so nice of Sherri Steinhauer to open her home to our golf team and it was an honor to be in the presence of a golfer who has accomplished so much. “Sherri's golf museum was filled with artifacts from her junior golf years through her 26-year professional career and walking around

and seeing all that she has accomplished can make any golfer, no matter age or ability, want to work hard so that they can reach their potential.” Levine noted that “Sherri analyzed each team member’s putting stroke and then gave them tips to improve. These tips were “greatly appreciated” and helped the team to go on to win their fifth straight division title. “Sherri is a wonderful woman and an inspiration to all young women,” Levine added. Hayley Weiner said her experience in visiting Sherri Steinhauer “was one I will truly never forget whether it was seeing all of her trophies or speaking to her about how the game of golf impacted her life so much. “Sherri Steinhauer left an impression on me about how greatly a sport CONTINUED ON PAGE 13

Sherri’s cousin, Alan Steinhauer, worked 18 months to finish the Memorabilia Room, which is a collection of photos, equipment, trophies, write-ups and more from her 26-year professional golfing career. Sherri’s late mother collected many of the items now on display in the room, a tribute to her talented daughter. Her family urged her to open her home to other golfers to inspire them.

Steinhauer said most of the items came from a massive collection maintained by her mother, Nancie, who passed away in 2010. When she realized the extent of the treasure trove of memories, she knew that a storage garage she had just built had a second floor that would be a perfect place to display everything. The second floor “Memorabilia Room” is 60 feet long and 14 feet wide and she hired a builder to build the furniture. Her nephew, Alan Steinhauer, got into the project and 18 months later it was finished. Steinhauer, a two-time major champion, noted that "as you’re playing on the Tour, you’re going through the motions every week and you never really reflect. But this has given me a chance to reflect on my career.” Equipped with reader rails that lay out Steinhauer’s career in writing, the museum takes on a storybook-type feel. “I equate it to an autobiography that actually is a visual autobiography,” she said. Steinhauer has hosted cub scouts, youth golf teams and plans to bring more children to the facility, which promotes the game of golf and where serving as a mentor to children has become a passion project. When the museum was completed in the fall of 2014, it was opened up to groups. Sherri pointed out that “I hope to inspire kids. I’ll take them through and ask them what they want to do with their life and I’ll just talk to them and tell them that dreams can come true.” Steinhauer added, “It’s a great place for me to CONTINUED ON PAGE 21

herri Steinhauer has had a long and illustrious professional golf career. After turning professional in 1985 she went on win eight tournaments including two major championships – the 1992 du Maurier Classic and the 2006 Women’s British Open. She also had two wins on the women’s Legends Tour. Her 26-year career came to an end recently but her love of the game and her competitive fire still burns bright. When asked how she made the decision to locate to the Town of Neversink in the northernmost reaches of Sullivan County, Sherri said, “a friend of mine and her family had a piece of property for sale, I took a look at it and fell in love with it. Asked if she is playing any competitive golf

at this time, Steinhauer pointed out that “my last round of golf was with my family on September 26, 2015 where we played a ‘ninesome’ on a private resort course and what a great memory that was. Her last competitive round was a one-day Legends Tour event earlier in September of last year. Sherri spends her winters in Palm Springs, California and the summer months in Sullivan County, when she also travels back to Wisconsin to visit her family. Steinhauer noted “I dedicated my whole life to golf starting when I was eight years old and won a dime in a two-hole competition. “At that point, I first felt the thrill of competing and at 12, I was competing in the state championships and lost my match to the gal who went on to win the tournament,” she said. helped prolong my career a few years but when I realized I couldn’t compete or play like I used to I lost the desire. The game became a responsibility instead of a pleasure so I then decided to put the clubs away,” Sherri noted. Steinhauer pointed out that “the only problem was I yearned for the competition and missed it terribly so I picked up another game called Pickle-ball and I thoroughly enjoy this sport and it gives me the competition I longed for while staying in shape and making new friends.” When asked what tournament she thinks the most about, that was easy – “the British Open – as I have great memories of winning it three times.” Sherri's Sullivan County summer residence is located on 68 wooded acres about two hours northwest of New York City and is 10 miles from the nearest stoplight. But this also

allows her to throw herself into a new hobby – raising horses. She now has three horses and started riding and taking lessons about four years ago. But unfortunately riding horses became too painful due to her hip issues. “I still very much enjoy the horses, often walking or hiking while others ride and having them with me on the property and being able to watch them from the house brings a lot of joy, fun and excitement to my life,” Sherri said. Although her Sullivan County home is 18 minutes to the nearest grocery store, “I just love the quiet,” she said. Her willingness to share with today’s youth what golf has done for her is a genuine beautiful gesture for this outstanding former LPGA champion. She said that “golf afforded me a wonderful life, I loved my career on tour and I was able to live out my dream and I feel so fortunate, I’m just grateful.”

take kids and give them any kind of inspiration I can. I started dreaming about what I wanted to do at a young age and I really do feel like my dream did come true.” When asked what prompted her to make the decision to open the museum to visitors Sherri said, “First, what prompted me to build the museum was finding all the memorabilia from my golf career and childhood trinkets tucked away by my Mom in our family home. “After my Mom passed away in December 2010, I sat on these items for a while wondering what I was going to do with them and that’s when I decided to build the museum. When I finished, my family flew in from Madison, WI to see it. “They (my family) suggested I should bring people in to tour,” and “remembering back to my youth and what a shy person I was, I thought maybe I could inspire kids with my story. You need to be deliberate in flycasting, not fast, but deliberate. Here Art goes over the proper way to finish the cast so the fly line and fly hit the water perfectly. Art has his own website at NeversinkRiver.com. CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2016 • 25

When tying the tippet to the leader you use a Surgeon’s knot, Art said. And when tying the fly to the tippet, you use a clinch knot. Art took his time, showing Laura all the intricacies of knot tying, and she then did it herself.

Hunting and hooting: the awesome activities of our local owls BY KATHY DALEY

W

hoooooo are they, the owls of Sullivan County and environs? They’re birds of prey mostly active in nighttime. Their wings are set up so as to be noiseless, and their ears are built to detect the tiniest movement of a tasty animal shivering in the leaves. To see off to the side, owls are able to rotate their heads in more than a half circle. These winged hunters are big-headed, bigeyed and short bodied. Wise, we call them, because of their solemn appearance. And they seem to us a little scary. Mysterious. Take, for example, those haunting calls. “It’s always exciting to hear an owl,” said Lance Verderame of Livingston Manor, a member of the Sullivan County Audubon Society. “Maybe it's because you usually hear the call at night, but it's almost a primal thing.” Fossils reveal owls alive 60 million years ago. Here and now, our region supports at least three species: the barred owl, which measures up to 20 inches in body length and has bars of buff or deep brown on breast and belly; the great horned owl, a large and powerful owl with tufted ears like “horns” and a wingspan of nearly five feet; and the Eastern screech owl, a robin-sized bird seen not only in our area but also in city parks and suburbs. “Most people miss owls entirely,” said John Haas, author of Birding Guide to Sullivan County, New York. “But if you know where and when to look for them, owls are not that hard to find. It's a case of understanding the birds' behavior and then finding them at the right place and time.” Clues for finding owls come, literally, from the birds' bodies. “Owls don't digest their prey in quite the same way as other birds,” said Haas, also active with Audubon. “They ingest the entire prey, and as 34 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2016

the soft parts are digested, the bones, hair, feathers, etc. form a ball in their stomach that does not pass through their digestive tract. Once the prey is completely digested, the owl regurgitates the 'pellet' of hard matter that is left over. These pellets can often be found beneath a tree where an owl regularly roosts.” Another sign of owl activity is their white droppings that stripe the tree trunks where the birds perch.

Livingston Manor's Lance Verderame, a member of the Sullivan County Audubon Society, says that barred owls are frequently heard at the Bashakill Wildlife Management Area in Wurtsboro.

HOOTING AND HOLLERING

Whether they're hooting musically or shrieking harshly like banshees, owls use their voices to establish territories and attract mates. Later, a mother owl raising her owlets will call to communicate with her young or with her mate.

Owls are mainly active at night, said Haas, “but some species such as barred owls are particularly active at dawn and dusk. (Barred owls) are also prone to vocalizing during the day, and their 'who-cooks-for-you' calls may be heard at any time of day. The other owls vocalize almost exclusively in complete darkness.” Verderame, who frequently speaks and gives tours at the Bashakill Wildlife Management Area in Wurtsboro, points out that barred owls are heard routinely there, “and I hear them from time to time in my own yard.” The voice of the great horned owl is a deeptoned series of hoots that are usually five in number. Typically found in the open space of farm areas, this “tiger of the air,” as the owl is called, eats squirrels, rabbits and an occasional skunk. By contrast, the barred owl consumes the smaller voles, mice and frogs.

Owls do not build their own nests, but rather make their homes in tree cavities or tree stumps. They will also adopt an abandoned hawk or crow's nest, sometimes adding lining material. Owls are early nesters, some even laying eggs in CONTRIBUTED PHOTO - GREG HUME, WIKIPEDIA

late winter, according to Chuck Fergus of the Pennsylvania Game Commission. “By the time (owl) fledglings leave the nest, the offspring of other wildlife abound,” Fergus writes in his Wildlife Notes for the Commission, “and are fairly easy prey for the inexperienced young owls.” ALL EYES AND EARS The Eastern screech owl is the smallest of our three full-time resident owls, but it possesses the same fascinating characteristics as the larger of the species. For instance, the quavering, lowpitched trill of the screech owl is often used to set a scary mood for TV and movie scenes. These owls are seen in rather small numbers in our area, said Verderame, but Bashakill does support screech owls living in holes in sycamore trees, and they might be seen sunning themselves in winter. Screeches and their larger owl cousins do not

possess eye “balls” as such but rather eyes on the end of long tubes. Owls cannot roll or move their eyes, so they rotate their heads – and can do so by up to 270 degrees – in order to watch moving objects. A ruff of feathers frames an owl face, hiding its large ear openings and funneling sound into the ears. When it hears an animal in leaves or grass, an owl will drop from its perch in a tree and swoop down quietly. Feathers on the tip of the wing deaden the whirring sound wings usually make, thereby muffling the owl's descent to unsuspecting prey. At the last minute, the owl swings its feet forward and with sharp talons outspread, swiftly hits the ground to grab its victim. “Owls play a key role in the natural control of rodents,” said Haas. “Owls' predation helps keep populations of them under control.” HOSTING THE TINIEST OWL CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

state permits to collect data on the lives of the little-known saw-whets by catching the birds, collecting data on gender, age and flight patterns and then “banding” them to enable individual identification. She works in the migration study with Renee Davis of Youngsville and with Lance Verderame. Freer, who has caught, banded and freed 700

saw-whets in seven years, said the task continues to afford her delightful moments. "You have this little owl in your hand, and some of them are so calm and quiet,” said Freer, who taught biology, field biology and ornithology for decades at SUNY Sullivan. “(The owls) look at you and they might make little noises, but they're absolutely tame, even though they might never have seen people before. People see them and their hearts just melt."

Lily Velasquez and George Rivera are excited to welcome new patrons and old friends to the Chestnut Café and look forward to bringing the restaurant to the next level with upgrades and new offerings.

Chestnut Cafe keeps changing to fit its customers’ tastes 46 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2016

f you haven’t made the trip along the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway into Long Eddy, there is no time like the present. After winding along the river’s edge toward Hancock, you arrive in small, scenic Long Eddy and the entrance to the Chestnut Café. Big things are happening at the small restaurant on Route 97, and George Rivera, owner and chef, wouldn’t have it any other way. George opened the current restaurant on May 1, 2010 after relocating from New York City. George was heavily involved in the Boy Scouts and had camped all over New York State, but fell in love with the area along the Delaware. In 2005 he purchased the Sportsman’s Bar, a local watering hole once the busiest bar in the area, that had been

shuttered for three years. While working in local kitchens, George and waitress and bartender Lily Velasquez painstakingly updated and restored the restaurant, transforming it from bar to family restaurant. “My brother had a restaurant in Manhattan, and that is where I got my start,” George explained. “I was studying accounting in college and had no interest in the restaurant business. After one night working to help out my brother, I was hooked. I learned every job in the kitchen, and loved it. Twentyseven years later here I am, doing it in my own place. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.” In opening his own restaurant, George wanted to create a family-friendly, local eatery with good CONTINUED ON PAGE 49

food and a relaxing atmosphere. As they enter their seventh year, George is looking to revamp the restaurant. Starting with a new name: The Chestnut, new signage, a full liquor license, new menus, and updates for both the interior and exterior, George has it all planned out. “I rebuilt the interior myself, and I try to do a project every year. Next winter I plan on putting down all new flooring. I hope to build a deck. A little bit here and there … We are still growing, still working on the restaurant.” George is very excited about expanding the current wine and beer selection with the installation of a 35-variety wine cooler. He has also applied for a “full” liquor license, and plans to whip up specialty cocktails when it is awarded. “I am always looking for something new and different. I like creating, and I am looking to take the restaurant to the next level.” George explained. The Chestnut is an American restaurant, CONTINUED ON PAGE 55

On Beaverkill Road you’ll find this tree that can’t decide which way it wants to grow.

day or afternoon on a motorcycle is about the experience, not the destination, and many area riders agree one of the most scenic and enjoyable routes must include a trip along Route 97. “Riding Route 97, whether you ride from Callicoon to Narrowsburg or into Port Jervis in Orange County, riders will be able to stop at a number of scenic pull-offs to enjoy the view, maybe take a few photographs, and are pretty likely to see some eagles or hawks,” advises Ken Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh works at O’Toole’s Harley Davidson in Wurtsboro and serves at the Chapter Manager of the Wurtsboro HOGS (Harley Davidson Owners Group).

62 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2016

“You can build a route around stops you want to make like the Zane Grey museum over the Roebling Bridge in Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania, which is easily accessible from the Sullivan County side, or Cedar Rapids and the Carriage House in Barryville,” Kavanaugh said. The popular Route 97 has been a famous backdrop for television commercials and in print advertisements for its incredibly noteworthy curves as well as visually stunning scenery. It seems any starting point on Route 97 can be just a half-day adventure or easily turn into an allday road trip that crosses state lines in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Riders heading north may opt to

venture into Roscoe or Downsville for the chance to ride through covered bridges. Downsville, in Delaware County, also offers the Pepacton Reservoir on Route 30. “Roscoe and Hancock are both great areas for riding,” agreed Tom Verdiglione co-owner of O’Toole’s Harley Davidson. “Or head over to Route 52 and you have more scenic pull-offs and then around either the Rondout or Neversink Reservoirs.” Local riders also enjoy leisurely rides with destinations in mind such as Bethel Woods or local flea markets with produce stands on Route 17B. For motorcycle friendly fall rides that include

taking in the majestic colors of the Hudson Valley foliage, ride out of Wurtsboro on Route 209 toward Ellenville, and continue further off Route 209 on Route 44/55 around Minnewaska. “Another way riders can participate in some great local rides is to support charity events like the St. Jude’s Poker Run and Pig Roast on the last Sunday in July, which this year happens to be the 31st,” said Kavanaugh. “The folks here at O’Toole’s are also very willing to help plan a route for good causes that may start here in Wurtsboro or include O’Toole’s CONTINUED ON PAGE 66
