Hang gliding in the ’Gunks:
Take off with your own set of wings BY DAN HUST

tanding atop the Shawangunk Ridge, the highest peaks of the Catskills directly ahead, you wonder: Can I really do this? Can I actually fly like a bird does? Greg Black knows the feeling. He experienced it 39 years ago, when he first rigged himself into a hang glider. A running start quickly launched him into the air, and those age-old questions were answered. Yes, I CAN! “It’s like what you dreamt about as a kid,” he 12 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2014
grins. “It’s complete freedom on a three-dimensional level,” agrees Josh McMillan. Greg owns Mountain Wings, a hang gliding shop and training school operating on the outskirts of Ellenville, NY since 1980. Josh is one of his U.S. Hang Gliding Association-certified instructors. They introduce about 1,000 people every year to the exhilarating sport. “Every time I land, it feels like I’ve cleansed my soul,” Josh relates. “Women pilots,” adds a still-grinning Greg, “call it an ‘airgasm’.” Your choice of words may be the same – or

stronger – when you first feel the ground drop out from under your feet. Videos and images on Mountain Wings’ website, www.mtnwings.com, show what it’s like: the wind whistling past your face, buildings and cars slowly shrinking far below, the green valleys giving way to the bluish mountains. The winds and topography combine to give this part of Catskill-Delaware country a great advantage in getting aloft with minimal effort. Indeed, just south of Mountain Wings’ location sits the Wurtsboro Airport, billed as the oldest soaring site in the U.S. (though being an airport, it’s geared more towards gliders and planes than hang gliders). If you’ve never even watched hang gliders soar effortlessly over the countryside, it’s time to take a trip to Ellenville. Pick a sunny day when the wind is out of the northwest. Climbing NYS Route 52 east out of Ellenville will take you up the side of the Shawangunk Ridge, passing just underneath Mountain Wings’ launch pad. Pulloffs along 52 provide
ample spots to catch the hang gliders in flight – and view the spectacular Catskills scenery. Back on the valley floor, taking U.S. Route 209 south of Ellenville will shortly bring you to CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

Typically, hang gliders here slip along the air currents at about 1,000-7,000 feet up – high enough that if something were to go wrong, your parachute would gently float you back down to earth. tion and contentment. “You’re not thinking about the bad day you had,” affirms Josh, who spends much of his time training those over 14 years of age and under 500 pounds to fly what is literally a 50pound set of wings. “They are twice as strong as a Cessna [airplane],” explains Greg, pointing to the Dacron fabric and tubular aluminum bracing. That lightweight but durable construction allows hang gliders to move effortlessly, requiring just small shifts in weight and posture to turn and land. Mountain Wings can accommodate up to 10 people at a time in training, with rates starting as low as $180 per person for a day lesson (equipment included). While lessons start on the training hill next to the shop, Greg promises that if conditions are good, you’ll be up on the mountainside – and flying off it – by lesson’s end. And you will experience what the birds do. “The glider,” Greg says with a knowing look, “is a tool to feel the air.”

ennanah Lake Golf & Tennis Club, with this year’s spring opening, celebrates 104 years as the oldest golf course operating in Sullivan County. Over the past 10 years the course and clubhouse facilities have seen major renovations. In 2007 the front nine holes underwent major changes, with two new greens added on holes four and nine, and new cart paths were added, along with tee boxes re-sodded and bunker

improvements. In 2006 the clubhouse was totally renovated, which included an enlarged pro shop, an expanded dining area and grill, and the addition of new outside dining decks which offer golfers a 60-mile panoramic view of the magnificent Catskills. This year, The Grill Restaurant and bar saw major renovations, with the expansion of the restaurant area and a new bar facing the golf course and the panoramic view. Sarah Lee, formerly from Norfolk, VA, and now living in Callicoon Center, is the new Events Coordinator, bringing 16 years of restaurant experience to her new job which includes bridal consulting, decorator, coordination with vendors, management of the waitress staff and coordinator of events. Plains. Andrew Scott Hepner, originally from Brooklyn, is the new Sous Chef and received his training from Nigel Samaroo and was formerly employed by the Split Rock Resort in Lake Harmony, PA. Under these two chefs The Grill will feature a “New American” menu. The restaurant employs three chefs and a waitress and bar staff. The Grill is open for breakfast and lunch Monday through Sunday, dinner on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The restaurant is closed for dinner on Thursday, hosting the Thursday night Men’s league.
The layout of this 18hole golf course provides any golfer with lots of opportunities to enjoy a great round of golf. Playing the course from the blue tees holes one through nine look like this. Hole No. 1 is a 355yard par 4 with a slight dogleg to the left. Take your tee shot to the left center. A trap is on the right front section of the green. Hole No. 2 is a 547yard par 5 featuring a narrow opening in front of the tee but the fairway then opens up some 75-100 yards from the tee. ond shot slightly down hill makes this green reachable in two and a good par or birdie. Hole No. 3 is a 379-yard par 4 slightly uphill with a dogleg left. Best tee shot is right center on top of the hill. From here there is still a slight uphill shot. From 50 to 60 yards from the green there is a small deep ditch which runs across the fairway. Hole No. 4 is a 192-yard par 3. Drive it left center and there is a trap on the left side of this green. Proper selection of your club off the tee will help in reaching this green. Hole No. 5 is a 358-yard par 4 with a dogleg left. Some trees will come into play if you hit left. Hole No. 6 is a 413-yard par 4 which presents every golfer one of the smallest openings from the tee to the fairway. Better keep it straight off the tee; the fairway does open up to the left and there are trees to the right. Best tee shot is left center. Some 100-yards from the tee there is water running in a small stream across the fairway. A trap on the left and right sides of the green also is a challenge. Hole No. 7 is a 435-yard par 5 and the fairway runs straight uphill. This is where you let it all out, with as long a tee shot as you can muster, and then a long iron or fairway wood to this green, which has a trap on the right side. Hole No. 8 is a 312-yard par 4. Sand traps are on the left and right sides of the green and a large tree guards the front of the green, which

makes for an interesting approach shot, to say the least. Hole No. 9 is a 190-yard par 3 slightly uphill and seems to play much longer than the card reads. A tough par 3 but a good tee shot to the green results in a birdie or par. Sand traps are at the front and back of this green. The front nine plays 3,181 yards with a par 36. The Back Nine Playing the blue tees the back nine holes can definitely be labeled as offering golfers some long uphill fairways and here are our tips for a successful round. Hole No. 10 is a 373-yard par 4 with a dogleg to the right. Take your tee shot to the center of the fairway. Don’t go right or the trees will block your second shot to the green. Sand traps guard the left and right front of the green and the right rear. Your second shot makes or breaks your score on this hole. Hole No. 11 is a 186-yard par 3 which tends to play shorter than the yardage posted. Sand traps are on the right and left. the green. Hole No. 12 is a 491-yard par 5 with a dogleg right some 100 plus yards off the tee. Keep the driver in the bag on this tee shot. There is water in front of the green and traps surround this green. We classify this hole a “real good” golf hole and your par 5 can be a challenge here. Hole No. 13 is a 329-yard par 4 with an uphill open fairway with a slight dogleg to the left. Sand traps are in front of this very large green so hitting an accurate approach shot near the pin is important. Hole No. 14 is a 548-yard par 5 and is the longest hole at Tennanah Lake. The fairway runs downhill, there is a pond on the left, keep your ball in the center of the fairway as it narrows going into the green. Stay out of the ditch which runs across the fairway, some 300 yards off the tee. Traps front right and left. Hole No. 15 is a 419-yard par 4, uphill and a straight open fairway. There is a unique covered bridge here which connects the 15th and 16 fairways and this tends to be a conversation piece for all golfers. There is a sand trap on the left and right of this small but challenging green.
Hole No. 16 is a 413-yard par 4 with the fairway running downhill and trees all along the left. Stay in the middle/right side of the fairway to keep out of trouble. There is a sand trap on both the left and right of this green. Hole No. 17 is a 196-yard par 3 with an elevated green. Tends to play longer than it looks, and it takes a good tee shot with a long iron or wood to the green to score your par. Sand traps are on the left and right front of this green. T
he Carriage House in Barryville is part of the historic landscape along the Delaware River. The building, designated a landmark, has been a restaurant and motel since the early 1900s. Husband and wife team Attila and Agnes Benke purchased the restaurant in 2000 and have enjoyed bringing their culinary talents to the area and its many visitors. The Carriage House offers multiple options for dining, including seasonal patio seating, formal dining room and a more casual area in the bar.
The hand-carved wooden barroom echoes the history of the building, and much of the original character has been maintained in the extensive renovations the Benke’s completed. Area bartender Caesar Feltrin, a staple in the Town of Highland dining scene, serves up specialty cocktails, draft and bottled beer, wine by the bottle or glass. trail to his burrow. He knows enough to gather and store pounds of nuts and seeds for the torpor of his underground winter season. Some chipmunk knowledge is trial and error, as when, at eight weeks old, he leaves the subterranean maternal nest to explore the sunny world on his own. But most knowledge in his little three-ounce body is the result of instinct’s impulse – such as the astonishing use of his face as, well, a shopping cart.
Last month, with winter over, “I began seeing chipmunks with full pouches,” said Wes Gillingham of Catskill Mountainkeeper in Youngsville. “I was taking a walk in the woods and stopped to watch a chipmunk, whose pouch definitely made him look top heavy.” Gillingham pointed out that chipmunks dine largely on tree crops like acorns, beechnuts, black cherry pits and seeds. So their expandable

face pouches, which can enlarge three times bigger than their heads, are handy receptacles for toting food. Researchers have found chipmunks cramming 48 cherry pits into cheek pouches. It’s not unusual for the blurred little reddish streak to leap away with 70 sunflower seeds jammed in his face. But chipmunks are omnivores — they feed on both plants and animals. Unlike squirrels, they are mostly ground-bound, eating seeds, nuts, berries, fruits, flowers and mushrooms. They also favor grasshoppers, crickets, worms, snails and frogs. And while they prefer terra firma, they can speed up a bird feeder, as many homeowners well know, and they can race up trees to eat bird eggs.

How to deter the hungry, swift-footed chipmunk Homeowners and particularly gardeners may not appreciate the delights of the bright little chipmunk that has tunneled through their flower bulbs. Although chipmunks do not cause serious agricultural damage, they can eat fruit, seeds and seedlings from the backyard garden. They can also cause structural damage by digging their underground homes beneath decks, porch stairs, walls or foundations. Use 1/4-inch mesh hardware cloth to keep chipmunks away from gardens and flowerbeds. To discourage chipmunks from burrowing around the foundation of your house, make sure that ground covers, trees and shrubs don’t connect wooded areas with the foundation. Move woodpiles or debris away from the house. Keep in mind that chipmunks can’t help but be attracted to bird feeders where they gather spilled seed or race right up to feed.

The tiniest member of the squirrel family, chipmunks weigh from three to five ounces and are 8 to 10 inches long counting their furry, flattened tail, which is black on the upper side, rust underneath and fringed with white hairs. Real chipmunks don’t sing, unlike Alvin and the Chipmunks of radio and movie fame, but they are vocal. Their sounds fall into several categories, including a sharp “Chip!” from which they get their name, and a shrill, bird-like, repeated chirp produced as an alarm call and also used during mating season.
(this one is lined with leaves) and for storing food. Sometimes there are more than one food storage area, each holding several quarts of seeds and nuts. The Eastern chipmunk’s genus name Tamias, which means steward or husbandman, refers to this storage ability and also to the chipmunk’s role in seed dispersal. Chipmunks value cleanliness – their burrows contain a specific trash chamber for broken nut shells and seed husks, and another area for a chipmunk bathroom.
BURROW ME DEEP
The alert, swift-footed animal tends to be solitary, spending most of its time collecting and storing underground food for the winter, when he then curls into a tight ball of fur and sleeps. Scientists say that during chipmunk hibernation, the heart rate declines from a normal 350 beats per minute to as low as four beats per minute. Still, they are not deep hibernators and, because they do not have the ability to store fat as do hibernating bears, for example, they rely on their food cache to keep them alive. The long sleep ends in early March. Chipmunks soon begin their spring mating season, which is followed by another in summer.
Chipmunks are different from squirrels in that they burrow rather than nest in trees. They are wonderful diggers, creating complex burrows that are 12 to 30 feet long. They begin a tunnel by digging in some halfway hidden spot under brush or a rock pile or at the base of an old log. Any bit of dirt unearthed is carefully carried away in the face pouch or spread around so as to hide the presence of the tunnel’s entrance. A chipmunk first digs a several-foot-long sloping tunnel, then carves horizontally. To ensure that larger predators have no access, the tunnel is only two inches high, just tall enough for his body. He packs the earth tightly on all sides. Different chambers are created for sleeping

After a gestation period of 31 days, the mother births a litter of 2 to 6 young, each about the size of a bumblebee. The babies remain underground in the burrow for six weeks. Several weeks later, after repeated forays from the burrow to the green earth above, they are ready to be on their own. That is when, with no consciousness of it at all, chipmunks begin to play their own role in the wise world of nature. Often they themselves serve as a food source for hawks, owls, snakes, fox and bobcats. But alive, they are important in planting seeds and helping things grow. “Chipmunks’ burrowing aerates and recycles soil,” points out Wes Gillingham. “The burrowing brings up mineralized earth to the surface, which supports the trout lilies and spring beauties that are coming up now in the woods.” And here and there, they do manage to charm us two-legged creatures, as we catch a glimpse of a tiny chipmunk perched on a stone wall or tree stump, surveying the surroundings she calls her own.

ack in 1976 the very first Sullivan County chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) was founded with 10 members dedicated to the conservation of the wild turkey and the preservation of local hunting heritage. But in the late 1980s the local chapter went under. Then, in 2002, the local NWTF chapter was, as current President Butch Kortright called it, “recreated,” reborn under the moniker 60 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2014
“Longbeards.” In 2003, a year after the birth of the Longbeards, Kortright would join the group. “I guess I was a year out,” he said jokingly. Later in his first year with the Longbeards, Kortright was named Vice President, and in 2006 President. “We’ve grown from just 10 members when the chapter was originally founded in ’76, to about 85 members and 15 committee members today,” affirmed Kortright. And that’s not all they’ve done over the years since 2002, as they’ve held an annual youth ice fishing derby, hosted trapping education courses, various Butch Kortright hunting and firearm President | safety courses, a shooting clinic with local Boy Scouts, turkey hunting seminars in local schools, hand out an annual scholarship to a lucky, qualified area senior, and even send an area youth off to DEC summer camp each year and much more. “We’re about hunting and the outdoors,” offered Kortright, adding, “But as you can see from the various activities we do in communities throughout the county, our real focus is on area youth.”

What a shame that would have been.” Kortright then asked, “And do you know who saved it?” “Hunters,” he exclaimed, quickly answering his own question. “Responsible hunters.” Though turkey federation membership numbers are admittedly down statewide, Kortright remained hopeful: “…with more than 120,000 turkey [hunting] tags sold last year alone, that’s a lot of potential members that we as an organization need to tap into,” he said. On April 13, the Longbeards held their annual Superfund Banquet, raising close to $30,000 to help finance their programs and charitable initiatives. Initiatives such as the group’s annual youth hunts – held both during turkey and deer hunting seasons – youth fishing contests and much more. O
ne of the best-kept secrets of fishing is the Rio Reservoir that lies on the southern end of the Mongaup River water system. Water flows and releases start north of the Rio at the Toronto Reservoir (1,000 acres) and then continue south to 9-mile long Swinging Bridge Reservoir, then to Mongaup Falls Reservoir and last to the Rio Reservoir. The Rio Reservoir is used for generating hydroelectric power and the construction of the dam was completed in 1927. It is currently owned by Southern Energy NY-Gen, LLC. Rio has a gravity dam of earthen construction, the core is homogeneous, concrete and the foundation is rock. The dam’s height is 101 feet with a length of 1487 feet. Maximum discharge is 39,000 cubic feet per second. Its capacity is 19,500 acrefeet and normal storage is 15,037 acrefeet. It drains an area of 195 square miles. To get to the Rio, take route 42 South

from Monticello to the hamlet of Forestburg, then 2¼ miles southwest on Old Plank Road. The Rio has a surface area of 435 acres, elevation is 813 feet above sea level, shore length of 9.3 miles and maximum depth is 80 feet. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has a public access boat launch and parking area for 15 cars and trailers on the northern end and a “hand-launch” on the southern end off Rio Dam Road with parking for 10 cars but no trailer capacity. Boats at this launch site must be hand carried to the water. Both DEC launch sites are open from April 1–November 1. Electric trolling motors are allowed, but absolutely no gasoline motors. The northern section of the Rio has the shallowest water and is noted for holding an abundance of largemouth bass and pickerel, but you can also catch them throughout the entire reservoir. The further south you fish towards the dam, the deeper the water gets and this section is noted for catching brown trout and walleye. Crappie, bluegill, rock bass, bullhead and yellow perch can be caught almost everywhere. Many artificial lures are used to catch fish. Big Events Tractor Parade Sunday, June 8 • Noon–3 p.m. Close to 300 tractors of all sizes, shapes, makes and vintage will parade down Main Street starting at noon. There is no bad vantage point, but a good spot is near the railroad square, where emcee Jesse Ballew calls out the tractor’s make/year and has entertaining exchanges with some of the drivers. After the parade, stay for the chicken barbecue and entertainment at the Delaware Community Center on Creamery Road. RECREATION & ENTERTAINMENT It all begins and ends on the river. The Delaware is one of the great fisheries on the East Coast and is well populated with a variety of species. For those who want to boat and/or fish, there are two river access points: One is at the end of Viaduct Rd., next to the Creamery Rd. Bridge and the Delaware Youth Center. The other is on River Rd. in Damascus Township, PA. Cross the Callicoon Bridge and make an immediate left and go less than a mile. There is also an access at Lander’s Café, for a modest fee.
