Take some time to go outside

P

ride in athletics is something all Sullivan County schools have demonstrated on the field and on the court, and this fall it should be no different. The most important topic of discussion this fall season is student participation in athletics. It is with great sadness that we hear some schools are not fielding teams this season because they don’t have the numbers. We understand the growth of tech-

nology and how the current generation enjoys smart phones, tablets and game consoles. However, in the beautiful county we live in, there are so many wonderful parks and trails. We recently heard from an assistant coach in the area, that these parks aren’t as full as they used to be. We’re going to take a wild guess and say that this is so because of all the technology.

Comradery, competition and lifelong friendships are only a few of the many advantages of participating in athletics and enjoying the outdoors. The other great aspect of sports is that you continue to add memories of countless years of athletic rivalries and traditions. Their memories will likely not come from an Xbox or a Playstation, but by going outside and talking with others.

Whether the issue is school size, not enough student interest, or the growth of technology, our hope is that, in the future, students will accept the challenge of continuing these athletic traditions, give a new sport a try or simply enjoy the beautiful scenic gifts this county offers by going out for a walk, a run or a hike. Our parks and rail trails and athletic fields are waiting for you.

Safety Precautions for Student Athletes BY JOHN R. PAWLOWSKI PT, DPT, MHS, OCS, CWCE, CSCS

A

s we bid farewell to summer, we welcome the fall and all of the fun activities associated with this beautiful season in the Catskill Mountain and Hudson Valley Regions. As a parent of two student athletes, I look forward to the fall sports season, which for our family involves soccer, baseball and softball. Unfortunately, this season is also associated with an increase in pediatric sport related injuries. Injuries can be traumatic or repetitive in nature and in many cases can be avoided or minimized by training appropriately and by utilizing appropriate sports protective gear. When an injury occurs, evaluation and treatment by a physical therapist can facilitate a successful recovery in a shorter period of time. Prior to the start of the school year and the first games of the season, children throughout our community participate in sports practices. Many of our young athletes become deconditioned after a summer of rest and relaxation. Days of lounging around and playing video games can quickly take a toll on their conditioning levels. Therefore, the first practices should involve a slow progressive return to the sport, with frequent rest breaks. As the conditioning levels of the athletes improve, so should the intensity of the practice.

Regardless of the sport, the first practice should include a parent/coach meeting, at which rules and expectations are clearly spelled out: Safety Equipment Before each practice, it is incumbent on the coach to validate that each athlete is wearing the appropriate safety equipment. If an athlete arrives for practice without the necessary safety equipment, then the athlete should not be allowed to participate in any contact drills or scrimmages for that practice. Punctuality As a coach, I always stress that punctuality to practices and games is more than a responsibility, it is a necessity in order for the athlete to participate in a sport specific warm-up and stretching. Athletes who arrive late to practice or a game should not be allowed to participate until they have completed the same warm up routine that their teammates have already completed. First Aid I recommend that each coach bring a first aid kit to the field for each game or practice; CPR/AED training is a plus. Medical Conditions Coaches should also be aware of any medical conditions that a child has and any activity restrictions that need to be followed.

Pain/Fatigue/Dehydration/ Concussion Behaviors During practices and games, I recommend that coaches observe for changes from normal behavior which could be indicative of injury, including fatigue, dehydration or a concussion. For instance, if a normally high energy athlete suddenly becomes lethargic and less active on the field, the athlete should be evaluated. If a child is limping or rubbing an extremity, the injury should be evaluated. When a minor injury occurs, then the universal RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) protocol should be used. Major or emergent injuries need to be sent to the hospital ED or urgent care for evaluation. One of the trends over the last two decades is a rise in popularity of yearround sports with a concurrent rise in pediatric sports injuries. While year round sports participation in one sport will enhance the performance of a young athlete, it sometimes can be at the expense of their bodies. Children’s musculoskeletal systems are immature and still developing well into their teenage years. For recreational athletes, I encourage children to try a variety of sports before specializing in one sport. Participation in a different sport each season challenges the musculoskeletal system to develop in different ways. This can reduce the risk of overuse injuries and is a healthy

approach to recreational sports. For competitive athletes who have the skills, desire and resources to specialize and participate in one particular competitive year-round sport, it is essential that parents and coaches monitor their children for injuries. It is a good idea to establish a relationship with a physical therapist to provide both injury prevention and rehabilitation services as needed. The fall sports season should be a safe and fun experience for the pediatric recreational and competitive athlete. With preparation and planning, parents, coaches and physical therapists can partner to achieve this goal for all participants. For more information on what a physical therapist can do for you, please visit the Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC) and the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) websites. October is National Physical Therapy month. Stop by for a tour at either one of our campuses to learn more about your community hospital rehabilitation services departments. John R. Pawlowski, PT, DPT, MHS, OCS, CWCE, CSCS is the Director of Rehabilitation Services at Catskill Regional Medical Center. In his position, he oversees the Rehabilitation Services Department including Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Audiology for all CRMC locations including the Skilled Nursing Unit, and Harris and Grover M. Hermann Hospital Division campuses. For more information about rehabilitation services at Catskill Regional Medical Center, visit www.crmcny.org.

There is a new coach at the head of Fallsburg High School’s varsity girls’ soccer program and her name is Katherine Santoianni. Santoianni, a graduate of George F. As for what she will bring to the team, Santoianni said, “The size of Tuxedo is relatable to Fallsburg. I think this helps with my understanding of a JOSEPH ABRAHAM | DEMOCRAT smaller athletic Katherine Santoianni program. “Because of my teaching experience with team building exercises and my personal experience playing soccer, I think I will be able to incorporate a good balance of skill development as well as a strong sense of community within the team. “I’m excited for a fun and successful first year coaching varsity soccer with this group of young ladies.”

Fallsburg High School has a new varsity boys soccer coach this fall, Michael Geller. The New Paltz High School graduate was named the 1999 Times Herald Record Player of the Year as a senior. He played four years of Division I soccer in college at the University of Buffalo

Sullivan West Cross Country has a new coach, Rianne Erlwein. Erlwein, a life long resident of Jeffersonville, graduated from SW in 2011. She started running in the fourth grade in the after school running program that was run at the time by J.J. Smith. “I really got serious about running when I was asked to be indoor and outdoor track manager for the varsity girls when i was in the sixth grade,” Erlwein said. “I moved up RICHARD ROSS | DEMOCRAT to varsity when I Rianne Erlwein was in seventh grade and ran cross country, indoor and outdoor track all the way through my junior high and high school years. I then went on to run cross country at Utica College for three years and I have also ran three marathons, including 2013 Boston Marathon. “Thoughout my years of competive running, I was extremely fortunate to have great coaches that each had different styles of training. Each coach helped to mold me into the runner I am today. As a new coach, I try to use bits and pieces of each one of my past coaches coaching styles to conform to each individual athlete and help them improve in the areas that they need most. Running is also a very mental sport, the more confidence you have in yourself the better you'll be. Coach: Don Drewett Last season’s record: Boys- did not field team. Girls – 7-1-0 within the league and 9-1-0 overall( runners up to Sullivan West at the Section IX Championships). Top returning players: “Currently we have a team of three boys, we are fielding a girls team with Kayla Maas and Kloe Petrin returning.” Key losses: Boys – David Powers Girls – Shelia Burns, Kelsey Collins and Sarah Malzahn. Team strengths: “Boys – two seniors, Erek Binkowski and Allen Kanoff, walking on. One freshman, Joe McNeil. Girls – Kayla and Kloe bring experience and are in 11th and 9th grade respectively. In last year’s section IX scoring, they placed first and eight respectively. Four out of those eight were seniors. Helen Sherwood is our only senior. We round out the team with Charley Bertolino 11th grade, Mickaela Gulla, Briana Terry and Kelsey Morgan all in 10th grade.” Where to improve: “Both Boys and Girls need to continue to work hard in practice so their

ability to compete increases.” Key games: “Both dual meets against Sullivan West (September 7 and October 4), which should impact who will be favored to win the League as well as the Section.”

Eldred Girls Soccer Coach: Tom Brucher Last season’s record:13-3-2 (Div., Section IX champion; lost in regional championship in double overtime) Top returning players: Lynzee Kelty, Jordan Lepes, Alyssa Mcgrail,

Kassandra Weatherly, Alaina Gaughn. Key losses: Jenna Burns, Erin Clarkin, Malissa Mcmonagle. Team strengths: “Experience, depth this year on bench.” Where to improve: Ball possession, more set pieces. Key games: Section championship. “All games are key because we must improve our play in each one.” Coach’s comment:“We had an outstanding team last year, and I expect this year’s team will be better. We had a dominant defense, only giving up 13 goals last year, and our offense scored 63. Eight athletes scored goals and Lynzee Kelty has a good chance to score her 100th goal this year. We play all larger schools this year with a tough schedule, but I'm sure the Lady Jackets will do well. As a coach, I learned from a few mistakes I made last year, so I hope I can get the team to were it should be the final four.” JOSEPH ABRAHAM | DEMOCRAT

We are looking at a few different options at quarterback at the moment. We were able to bring in some great assistant coaches this offseason, Sean McAvaney, Brian McAvaney and Matt Sexton, to work with us along with returning coaches Mike Ballard and Dennis Martin. We were a very young team last year so we are hoping the extra year of growth and maturing as well as being their second year of running the system will result in some success this year.”

Excellence in the Classroom and in Athletics

Coach: Claire Moore Last season's record: 1-11 Top returning players: Jackie Musa, JJ Brown and Morgan Shamro. Key losses: Ashton Krummack and Cafui Awasu. Team strengths: A well conditioned team with strong communication on and off the field. Where to improve: “We will need to work on our defensive line as T-V lost four seniors last year. We will focus on collaboration between the offense and defense on the field to encourage a smooth transition of the ball up the field. We need to focus on more shots on goal and scoring opportunities.” Season's goals: “To be competitive with all teams and to limit scoring opportunities and to win but to also play soccer in a mature manner with the knowledge to do so.” Key games: “Sullivan West and Livingston Manor as we have three games with each team due to several schools dropping their teams this season.” Coach's comment: “You can expect a well conditioned team who demonstrates strong communication and smart, deliberate decisions on the field.”
