Scholastic athletes deserve our support League (OCIAA). The dedication and hard work which every student-athlete must put forth to balance their academics and sports does not go unnoticed. Whether it is getting up early to catch up on school work before school or spending your weekend at a ballgame and then working on school work later, student-athletes show a commitment to excelling which is a great trait to carry on from high school. Many times the laser focus which is needed to perform both sports and in the classroom is a mix which can elevate the student’s outcomes both in higher grades and better performances. And speaking of commitment, the coaches, parents and assistants who dedicate so much of their time to the student-athletes are to be recognized and thanked for all they do. Blending the young men and
women into a cohesive unit is no easy task and we realize the hard work it takes to be both a coach and a parent of an athlete. We would like to thank our high school coaches for all the lessons they taught us, all the trips they made running us around and for being there for us whether we won or lost. It truly meant a lot. And while sports is an outlet for all our Sullivan County students we would also like to recognize those students who decide to join a club at school, play in the band, sing in the chorus or get up on stage for a play. Your participation in high school activities is what makes each and every one of you unique and a true individual. Sports isn’t everyone’s game so getting involved in something which is truly your passion is a great alternative. We encourage all the students of

That speaks well to the nearly 400 student-athletes who will be gracing our football fields, pitches, tennis courts and cross-country courses this fall to compete in jayvee and varsity sports competitions. We are delighted by the enthusiasm we have seen at the several games which we have already attended this year and would like to encourage our readers to get out and enjoy a fall afternoon or evening at a local sports event. High school sports competition has a proud tradition in Sullivan County with schools competing in the DUSO League and the Western Sullivan League for many years before the realignment of many of our sports teams into the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic

today to get involved, either in school or after school, in something which truly excites you. Whether it is interning at a local radio station, newspaper or maybe even an after-school job to earn some extra money, your involvement is important. And lastly, to the parents and teachers of our children – thank you! Your job is many times long and difficult, and we recognize how important it is to have someone there to guide and mentor our kids while they are growing into the young adults we aspire them to be. So please, enjoy this Official Sullivan County Sports Guide and try and make it to a game this fall to cheer on your friends and neighbors’ kids who are trying so hard to be the best they can be. Our communities will certainly be better off.

ceno, Ethan Piatek, Jon DePaolo, Jake Lesczynski. Team strengths: This year’s team has an abundance of extremely athletic players and good sized linemen. What team needs to work on: We need to build on our great off-season that started in April. The experience of our returning linemen will help our up-and-coming linemen develop. On
defense we must work on using our speed to frustrate opposing offenses. Season’s goal: Our goal is to return to sectionals and win a wide-open Section 9 Class B Championship. Coach’s comment: This year’s Liberty Indians team has players ready to compete with size and speed. We return Kymanni Dennis, one of Section 9’s best players and almost every
skill position player to our roster, including Chris Bayer, a smart decision maker and field general at the quarterback position. Our offensive line and defensive line is made up of big, athletic players that are learning and working hard every day. This team has the capability and desire to win a Section 9 Championship.

Coach’s name: Maria Caro 2018’s record: 3-12 Top returning players: Leydi Gonzalez (#1 seed); Leydi, along with a teammate, made it to the round of 16 for doubles last year at the OCIAA tournament. She never picked up a racket until 10th grade when she joined the team. Now, in her senior year, we are hoping she can continue to develop her natural talents. Team strengths: Enthusiasm and grit. Many of the girls have never played a sport and yet they are willing to put themselves out there against teams and opponents who have been at the sport for years. What team needs to work on: Time
and experience is something we could sorely use, but with only 10 practice sessions before our first match, it’s hard to be prepared at the level we would love to be. Will continue to add to their funds of knowledge and skills. Season’s goal: To win at least two matches, which is a tall order since all but one of the team members are beginners. Coach’s comment: Hoping to grow the team. First year, in a while, that we have a couple of freshmen. Even though we will be losing three at the end of this year, we have enough underclassmen to hopefully begin to lay a foundation for a competitive team.

energy and are eager to play. What team needs to work on: Continue to expand on our team strategies and utilize them effectively in game play. Season’s goal: Continue into the postseason. Eight at the gate STORY AND PHOTOS BY RICHARD A. ROSS
W
ith the crispness of fall, the sun shining brightly and excitement clearly palpable, the four Sullivan County Eight-Man football squads of Tri-Valley, Roscoe, Fallsburg and Sullivan West recently scrimmaged against each other along with Onteora and Ellenville. Teams worked on Special Teams skills of punt, extra-point kicks, punt returns, ten-minute running time of actual plays and defense and finally two-minute drills to mirror those final moments of a quarter or a game. Once the games got underway last weekend, Tri-Valley was the only county team to win on opening weekend, in sensational fashion over Dover, 34-26. Section 9 Eight-Man football has two divisions this season. All county teams and Ellenville make up Division I. At the end of the regular season, the top four seeds per division will make the playoffs, with quarterfinals slated for October 26, semifinals slated for November 2, and the Section 9 title game set for November 9 at Dietz Stadium in Kingston.
Captains’ Corner Team success begins with fine leadership and this year’s grid captains have great expectations. Their words exude confidence, camaraderie, and dedicated commitment. As the season goes forward we hope to focus our attention on many of these key players as they make their unique contributions to the games ahead. Pictured are the four county Eight-Man teams’ captains.

t’s still early in the season with only one game played, but here’s a look at what’s in store for Sullivan County’s two 11-man teams –– Liberty and Monticello –– this season. The Indians were dominant in week one, destroying Rondout Valley 48-20. Liberty has an extremely balanced offense with quarterback Chris Bayer proving he can air it out to several talented Indians’ receivers. Also, Kymanni Dennis is no easy young man to stop, especially when he gets momentum. You’ll often find not one, not two, but three defenders needed to take him down. While he and Bayer deserve credit for their skills, it would be unwise to not mention Liberty’s dominance on the line. With several talented linemen, Liberty can control the line of scrimmage, making them a serious threat in their division (Section 9 Class B Division II). While O’Neill and Highland cannot be taken lightly, they had less than impressive starts, losing to Marlboro 34-0 and Goshen 40-0 respectively. Burke Catholic will likely be Liberty’s biggest threat in the division. They beat Red Hook 48-35 in their opener. If Liberty can make it to the postseason, it will be anybody’s guess who will take the crown. Marlboro once again will be a major threat coming from Class B Division I, but once the playoffs come, anything can happen. The Monticello Panthers are in Class A Division II, and are looking at another challenging season. The Panthers are working hard to rebuild their football program, and had a tough time with Class AA Kingston in their opener. Expect Monticello to be competitive this season, but it will be difficult for them to make the postseason in such a loaded division which includes programs like Goshen, New Paltz and Saugerties.

Coach: Rick Sternkopf (Varsity XC Boys and Girls) Top returners: Boys: Senior Brandon Mancroni, Soph. Evan Waterton (Key Addition: Senior Steve Bello). Girls: Senior Aubrey Soller (Key Addition: Freshman Taina DeJesus). Key losses: Girls - Sarah Grodin Team strengths: Our Boys and Girls Teams both have strong Senior runners who have been through the program for a number of years. We will look to them for leadership and direction through this XC season. What team needs to work on: We will be taking one race at a time this season, and try to improve each day at practice. I am excited to see what runners step up this season. Coach's comment: We have a chance to go out and surprise some teams. Our boys team is comprised with some of the top runners (Bello, Mancroni, Waterton) in the county, it’s up to our runners to keep working as a pack to make our team stronger as the season progresses on. On the girls’ side, we are senior heavy with a couple freshmen runners. We are looking to make improvements each time we race.
