Role modeling should start on the sideline
T
he next 30 pages contains the pictures of 34 varsity fall sports teams from all of Sullivan County’s eight school districts. There are several more teams which we couldn’t get in front of a camera, which would bring that total to 38 teams. That’s speaks well to the nearly 500 student-athletes who will be gracing our football fields, pitches, tennis courts and cross-country courses this fall. We are delighted by the enthusiasm we have seen at the several games which we have already attended this year and would like to add a few comments – namely to the fans. We know that many of the most rabid fans are family and friends who want their kids to play well and win. Cheering is great but we urge the fans on the sidelines to remember that the athletes on the field can
hear you and yelling at the coaches, referees and players isn’t OK. Not only do we need to remember that we are role modeling for our younger generation, but that the dedicated coaches, referees and athletes are performing to the best of their abilities and deserve our praise – not ridicule. Yes, we all love championship tro-
phies, sectional championships and personal records, but the real reason we have student-athletes is to teach them the importance of teamwork, discipline, hard work and how to deal humbly with victory and graciously with defeat. Some of the greatest lessons we learned in high school sports didn’t come from the championship teams

but rather the 1-6 year when we had to give our best every day to try and improve and perform better as an individual and team. We would like to thank our high school coaches for all the lessons they taught us, all the trips they made running us around and for being there for us whether we won or lost. It truly meant a lot.

In terms of the air attack, I'm very excited about the leadership and ability of Hunter Kolvenbach at quarterback. Up front on the offensive line, we are anchored by Scott VanTuyl, Colton Kelty, and Chris Weber. Defensively, I'm excited about our linebackers, whom I believe, will be very successful.”

Coach: JJ Gass Last season's record: 11-8; advanced to Class D State Final Four. Key returning players: Lyndzee Kelty, Jordan Lepes, Sheila Burns, Jenna Burns, Addy Bodnariuk, Savannah Fink, and Melissa McMonagle. Key losses to graduation: Rebecca Morgan, Angie Schadt, Shannon Brucher, Sam Banghard, Zoe Zuckerman, and Nicole Elvin. Team strengths: “Our team strength is how we play as a unit. Everyone goes out there and trusts their teammates.” Where you need to improve: “I am sure we will need to improve on some things but until we start playing games against other teams, I will not know what they are. Each game will bring us new ideas and new skills that we need to work on. Season’s goals: Our goal is to compete for the Section 9 title. There are some quality teams in the Class D division, so it is really up for grabs. Key games: “League games against Livingtson Manor and Chapel Field are huge. Also playing Seward and Port Jervis will give us bigger schools to play and see how we measure up.” Overall comment: “This year should be a lot of fun. We have some young players coming up that we need to mesh with our returners from last year. Once we all get on the same page, we will be able to compete with any team we see on the field. Last year was a great year for the Eldred soccer program and we are hoping to keep it up.”

GIRLS’ SOCCER Coach: Jen Gorr Last season’s record: 10-9, 3-1 league. Key returnees: junior Annaliese Gorr (led the team in assists and goals); junior goalie Tara Roser (62 saves last year); junior Ta-Shauna West (defense); junior Devon Dutcher (defense); senior Jordyne Shaver (defense) Key losses to graduation: Farrah Mills and Ami Calo. Team strengths: Many of these girls have played together since modified and have developed into a very talented team. Our frontline which consists of Katie Rau, Fern Mills and Annaliese Gorr work very well together and seem to read each other’s minds making successful crosses that often end with a goal. Although we are missing Farrah on the frontline and Ami in the midfield, other girls are already filling in the voids. Where we need to improve: “Our midfield needs to work more as a unit to assist

Coach: Michael March (first year); also added Greg Botsford as assistant coach (Botsford is credited with starting the Tri-Valley Youth Football program) Last season’s record: 0-9 Key returning players: Justin Swarthout, Jared James, Andrew Raymond, Josh Johnson and John Killian. Key losses: Just one senior from last tear’s team, Alberto Hernandez. Also, head coach John Rusin stepped down for personal reasons. Team strengths: Team is a little older, little wiser, quicker and more mature than a year ago. Also having [coach] Botsford (“his knowledge of offense has made a huge difference. And of course, all of the kids have a great deal of respect for him.”) Where you need to improve: Tackling Key games: League games against Sullivan West, Liberty and Millbrook. Overall comment: “Last year made them want to work even harder this year, and you can see it. They made the most of the off season and early practices and they are really starting to look good. This year's seniors had the opportunity to participate in the program when they were in sixth-grade. These young men learned the same style of offense that is being run at the varsity level when they were in elementary school. There is more continuity. The students who are in eighth-grade now will have had the opportunity to have participated in the entire youth program, into modified, and onto JV and varsity.”
Best Wishes To All The Fall Sports Teams, Especially the TV Bears!!

Team strengths: According to Martin, “playing together for so long gives them a true advantage. We're a small school – we know each other really well and we have played soccer together for as long as we can remember.” Where we need to improve: gaining experience for some our younger players. Key games: Looking forward to playing Tuxedo, who defeated the Lady Bears last year in a muddy battle that cost them a shot at sectionals. But really, Ahl says, all divisional games are important. “We're familiar with those teams and there's a lot more riding on those games in order to make it to sectionals.” Overall comment: “Half of this year's team has a lot of experience, while the other half has little or no varsity experience – but who have a good amount of talen. What I have seen early in the season, at practices, is a team that is working to win. “The older girls are working with the younger girls – encouraging and pushing them to work hard. Once we get going, we should have a really strong team.”

ntertaining this football season? To make your gatherings memorable, you’ll need to do more than just turn on the game and hope for the best. Even without the loss of consciousness, concussions are serious injuries that should be evaluated by a medical professional. It is important to recognize the symptoms of a concussion. Even if all your guests are rooting for the same team, spice it up with some friendly competition, like wagering on who hosts the crowd for the next game. playing field to undergo a complete medical examination that will include a physical analysis, cognitive testing, and possibly a CT scan or MRI to observe damage to the brain. The healthcare professional will determine when it is safe for the athlete to return to the playing field. Immediately following a concussion, the athlete is typically placed on complete physical and cognitive rest until all symptoms have resolved. Once asymptomatic, the 4th International Conference on Concussion in Sport held in Zurich (November 2012), recommends that the athlete returns to play in graduated phases (~ 24 hours between each phase), beginning with light aerobic exercise (< 70% max heart rate), such as walking or stationary biking. If no symptoms have returned with light aerobic activity, the athlete can then advance to more moderate intensity activities (i.e., jogging or more intense stationary bike). The progression then continues on to more high intensity exercise, then to sport-specific drills, followed by full contact practice, and finally returning to play (progression ~ 1 week to return to play). If symptoms do arise at any stage along the road to recovery, the athlete should regress to the previous level of activity that was symptom free.
