Fall Sports: A Healthful Helper A SPECIAL ARTICLE BY THE CATSKILL REGIONAL MEDICAL GROUP

Now that school is back in session, student athletes at high schools across Sullivan County have already begun their training and practice routines.

They are looking forward to a new season of competition and camaraderie.

But, for young competitors, it is important not to let excitement and anticipation distract from proper preparation and on-field performance throughout the preseason and into the fall schedule. Without it, a variety of injuries can occur, not only taking the fun out of the game, but resulting in potentially long term physical damage. The risk of injury can be greatly reduced by following just a few simple tips.

Warm Up Well Even young athletes, whose bodies are naturally strong and resilient, should ease into the new season to avoid what we call “start-up injuries.”

Going too hard, too fast is a sure fire way to overtax your joints and muscles when they’ve been out of practice.

Whether you are participating in endurance sports such as cross country or contact sports like football, you should schedule time for stretching and light cardio prior to a practice or competition. This will help get your body limber and firing on all cylinders, so you don’t shock it by jumping right into the demanding competitive environment. The orthopedic specialists at Catskill Regional warn that injuries of the bones and muscles can be common when athletes eschew warm-ups.

Fuel the Fire Here’s a fitness fact: You cannot outtrain a bad diet with a good workout routine. So, the very first step in developing and maintaining a strong and competition-ready body is to eat right.

A diet rich in nutrient-dense, unprocessed foods can deliver more than adequate amounts of nutrients.

Young athletes should also make sure they get enough calcium, which will help strengthen developing bones.

Milk remains a great source of calcium, but you may also consider nondairy sources, including many green veggies, oranges and even almonds.

It’s important to stay hydrated, espe-

cially during pre-season practices and games in early September when temperatures can still get warm. Drink plenty of water before, during and after a game or practice. Some sports drinks are also great for replacing electrolytes lost through sweating, but be mindful of their sugar content.

Hydration does some amazing things for all systems of the body; don’t let thirst wipe you out!

Train to Gain Once you give your body the clean, high-test fuel it craves for optimal health, adding at-school or at-home workouts is a great way to build stamina and strength, which can help you gain an edge on your competition!

Building muscle does more than just give you added power, it also helps protect your joints and tendons. The stronger you make your body, the better it will respond to the physical demands of the game. Perform a mix of cardiovascular and strength training – weights, resistance, etc. – to get your body ready to more easily fend off strains, sprains and other stresses that competing puts on your body.

Report & Rest In the heat of competition, there’s not one athlete from high school to the pros who wants to come out of the game. A strong competitive spirit is great, but playing through an injury can lead to further aggravating it; keeping you sidelined for even longer or, worse, leading to permanent damage. It is imperative that you let your coaches know immediately if you sustain an injury on the field. Even if the damage seems minor or feels like you could just “walk it off.” If a student athlete is then diagnosed with an injury, rest is crucial. Again, young bodies are very resilient, so downtime is very effective toward full recovery. No one wants to miss a big game, but making a few plays on homecoming is not worth risking your long-term health.

Pain isn’t an inconvenience, it is an alarm system, so listen when your body says, “ouch,” and get it what it needs to recover. Beware of Concussions Medical evidence on the negative, long-term effects of head injuries on athletes of all ages and skill levels continues to accumulate. Concussions are serious situations that can escalate to dire when unnoticed or unaddressed.

Because concussions can affect young, developing brains more seriously, they must be addressed promptly and with the proper attention. Any impact to the head creates potential for a concussion, as do blows to the body that create a whiplash effect – the head being snapped side to side or backwards. Most concussions occur without loss of consciousness, so it is not always evident right off the bat that one has been sustained. So, reporting any occurrence of a hard hit to a coach, parent or teacher, regardless of how insignificant it may seem, is imperative.

Signs of a concussion can show immediately or can go unnoticed for hours; even days. That’s where parents need to be vigilant of changes in their students’ physical conditions and moods. Seek immediate medical attention for any new pain experienced after a head-related injury, particularly anything persistent that isn’t subsiding. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provide these telltale signs of a concussion to watch for in your student athlete: • Appears dazed or stunned • Is confused about events • Answers questions slowly • Repeats questions • Can’t recall events prior to the hit, bump, or fall • Can’t recall events after the hit, bump, or fall • Loses consciousness (even briefly) • Shows behavior or personality changes • Forgets class schedule or assignments If your student reports symptoms of a concussion, Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris has the advanced imaging technology to help

diagnose their condition, including MRI Services. In some cases, you can even make an appointment and have an MRI on the same day.

Let’s Get Physicals Of course, one of the most basic and important steps you can take to prepare your student athlete for the coming year of games and academics is to be sure they have had their annual physical. A regular health exam not only lets athletes know if they’re in competition form, but they can help diagnose health issues before they become health crises. Early detection has proven to be a key to considerably better outcomes for a myriad of health-related issues, making annual physicals something the whole family should be doing, not just your star field hockey goalie!

Not only do vaccinations keep us resistant to nefarious illnesses, but some are required to compete on the scholastic level. SULLIVAN COUNTY- You could see it coming. With declining numbers of players opting to sign up for football in the county’s smaller schools, the switch to eight-man football was inevitable. And so here it is making its debut this fall as Sullivan West, TriValley, Fallsburg, Eldred and Roscoe field squads in a newly formed Section IX eight-man division that also includes Dover, Pine Plains and Pawling.

Each school will play all the others once on fields narrowed to 40 yards but preserved at the 100-yard length.

Technically speaking the fields should be only 80 yards long but the prospect of moving the goalposts in seemed impractical taking into account financial considerations and the uncertainty of the possible return to 11-man play at some future date. Moving the goalposts would also create problems for soccer, which is often played on the same field in many of the school districts. Offensively speaking teams will feature an array of a center, two guards and a pair of ends who can be used either in tight deployment or split out as wide receivers. Defensively teams are at liberty to use any formations they deem appropriate.

On September 1 Tri-Valley hosted a multi-team scrimmage that featured punt/punt returns, blocking, tenminute running time scrimmages, and an opportunity to work on their two-

minute drills. To a man the county coaches felt it was extremely valuable as did the players who seemed enthusiastic to get in some live contact against county competitors they will see down the line. Week One featured a full array of games on the docket with a commanding win by Tri-Valley and a victory by Sullivan West. While there were questions about the viability of eight-man football when the idea was first aired last year, it is clear that given the smaller roster numbers, the switch insured the continuance of the sport many regard as a quintessential part of fall athletic endeavors.

The top four teams from the eightschool participants will make it to playoff semifinals to be staged at FDR on October 27 with the #1 vs. the #4 seed followed by the #2 vs. the #3 seed at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively The eight-man championship game will be held at Dietz Stadium in Kingston on November 3 at 3 p.m. Outstanding players from the county’s eight-man teams which are not still involved in playoffs will be eligible to play in the Section IX Exceptional Senior Game.

In the future when at least six sections from the state are deploying eight-man football, regional play and state championships will be part of the allure. But locally, by the end of week one even former naysayers about the switch from 11-man to 8-man came away from the gridiron frays declaring the “eight is great.”

Monticello is a very young team with a lot of new faces who will surely gain valuable varsity experience competing in the difficult Section IX Class A Division II with the likes of Goshen, Saugerties, Wallkill and newcomers New Paltz who wreaked havoc in Class B the past few seasons. Coachâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s comment: I believe we can compete with every team on our schedule. My goal is to have the team improve everyday and every game. As long as we play as a team, we will be competitive and achieve more. After the heartbreak of losing in overtime in sectionals, I know that this group of seniors want to return to sectionals and redeem themselves. As long as we can stay healthy, we will be able to achieve our goal of being competitive and returning to sectionals.

Coach’s comment: We have the potential to win our division this season. We expect to qualify for Sectional play. Our core of returning players is one of our assets. When we get players that can put it into the back of the net, we will be a force to be reckoned with.

Coachâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s comment: I'm extremely encouraged after the preseason. These men put in a ton of work and have already improved tremendously. We have a solid mix of veteran senior leaders and upcoming freshmen who should contribute right away. Our goal is to make sectionals again and double our win total from last season.
