emorial Day weekend is now behind us, heralding the unofficial start of summer. And there are few better ways to spend a Sunny Sunday afternoon than with a trip to the Callicoon Farmers’ Market at Callicoon Creek Park, on Audrey Dorrer Drive. Wendee Greene took over this spring as the new market manager of the sponsoring organization, the Sullivan County Farmers’ Markets
Association (SCFMA). Greene is excited to help add another splash of color to an already vibrant community. “I am so grateful to be able to help bring the freshest, most healthful food to the Upper Delaware River Valley,” said Greene. “That I am a part of a real community market, with artisans, artists and musicians participating throughout the market season feels magical to me.”

I have that same kind of affinity for the Callicoon Farmers’ Market. I’m a long time member of Slow Food, and I feel lucky to be able to champion good, clean and fair food for everyone. Working with the [SCFMA] and managing this market is my dream job.” Fran Micciulli, of North Branch, said, “There’s nothing quite like talking to the man who raised the meat you’re about to feed your family. I can ask what the animals are fed, how they are kept, even the best cut for a particular recipe. You just don’t get that at a supermarket.”

Local residents have been feeling that magic since the market became a regular staple in Callicoon in 2000. Situated on the banks where the Callicoon Creek meets the Delaware River, this farmers’ market provides the relaxed, almost tranquil atmosphere which Sundays are all about. Featuring products and produce from 35 individual local vendors, there’s bound to be something for everyone. “We have longtime vendors; people like Peter Anderson, from Anderson’s Maple Farm, who actually started the market,” said Greene. “And, we have brand new members like Ryan Makinson, from Clark’s Cultures Kombucha, and Amanda Steng from Woodside Blue Preserves. It’s a vibrant mix. We have something for everyone.” There are affordable meats and vegetables for sale, and even treats for someone with an insatiable sweet tooth, like ice cream and cookies. All

Many of these farmers, food entrepreneurs, artists and artisans are our friends and our neighbors, and I think that’s why more people from the local community keep coming out to market,” Greene said. “People are meeting up, grabbing a juice or baked treat, sitting at the picnic tables and listening to guest musicians. Then they shop,
