othing says holiday tradition quite like the annual James Dworetsky Holiday Parade that marches down Jeffersonville’s Main Street every year. This Friday,
November 24, for the 23rd time, the Dworetsky parade will again bring together the community through floats, holiday spirit, candy and a very special appearance by Santa Claus himself. Bring the kids down for a night that's sure to entrance and treat

This year, the Village of Jeffersonville will host a pre-parade tailgate and tree lighting in the Backyard Park from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Directly following, there will be a Kingfisher Lantern Release on Main Street at 6:30 pm. Those interested can purchase a lantern at the Jeffersonville Welcome Center (across from the post office),
and all proceeds will be donated to the Kingfisher Project. Line up for the parade will be up at the Sullivan West Elementary School at Jeffersonville at 6 p.m. and step off wil be at 7 p.m. Be sure to find parking early and get in before 7 p.m. when Rte. 52 from Lake Jeff area to Kohlertown will be closed to traffic. Dress warm, and bring your festive spirit for what will be a truly magical night!

he magic begins again in Sullivan County this holiday season. For the 13th year, Santa will visit Sullivan County with his friends from the North Pole. They will make their 100 mile journey aboard Santaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 50foot lighted and musical Christmas scene that greets and spreads joy to people of all ages. Having started in Eldred in 2005, the Santa Express has grown into a wonderful tradition that visits towns in Sullivan and Orange Counties. This year, for the first time ever, the Santa Express will be making a stop in Jeffersonville.

Banana and Coconut Loaf
T
he aroma of homemade bread baking in the oven is enough to compel many people to get in the kitchen and bake. That aroma is even more welcoming when hosting friends and family overnight, as there's nothing quite like waking up to the smell of freshly baked bread coming from the kitchen.
Makes 1 medium loaf 3/4 cup unsweetened shredded coconut 7 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar Grated peel of 1 unwaxed lime 2 extra-large eggs, beaten 3 medium bananas, very ripe (about 1 cup peeled)

Put the coconut in an ovenproof dish and toast in the heated oven for about 3 minutes until a light gold color. Let cool until needed. Put the butter into a large bowl, add the sugar and the grated lime peel. Beat well with a wooden spoon or electric mixer. Gradually beat in the eggs. Using a fork, mash the bananas fairly roughly so they keep a bit of texture. Add to the bowl together with the coconut. Halve the lime and squeeze out the juice, then add 1 tablespoon of
3 tablespoons plain yogurt (not fat-free) 2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda A good pinch of sea salt 1 8 x 4 x 21/2-inch loaf pan, greased and base-lined with parchment paper Preheat the oven to 350 F. the juice to the bowl with the yogurt. Mix in gently. Set a strainer over the bowl and sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt onto the mixture. Mix in well, then scrape the mixture into the prepared pan and smooth the surface. Bake for about 1 hour until golden and a skewer inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean. Carefully remove from the pan and let cool on a wire rack. Serve thickly sliced. Best eaten within 3 days. Can be frozen for up to 1 month.

Since then, the drive has brightened the holidays for several local children. t’s not exactly the north star, or the star that guided the three wise men to Bethlehem, but this shining symbol high up on Young’s Hill Roadjust outside Liberty has heralded the holiday season for half a century. The star was built by New York State Trooper Richard A. Van Alstyne between 1965 and 1967. Standing 35 feet tall and 24 feet from end to end, it’s a welcome and familiar sight for people traveling through Liberty on Route 17. The star was such an important part of the holiday season in Liberty that for many years Van Alstyne paid the cost of electricity out of his own pocket - usually a few hundred dollars. When Van Alstyne was suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease in the 1970s, friends and community members stepped in to help. After Van Alstyne passed away, it was the dedication of his neighbor Linda Bult and her friend Barbara Burns that kept his memory shining bright. Bult went so far as to have the electricity meter for the star installed on her property and Burns handled donations to keep the lights on. After Bult passed away in 2009, the Liberty Elks Lodge was extremely generous in continuing to fund the Van Alstyne Star.

Now fifty years after Richard Van Alstyne first made Liberty a brighter place, his son, Chris, is keeping the tradition alive. “My dad built the star and I am very proud of this, but I believe the real story is in all the folks that have kept it going for the 40 years after my father's death,” said Chris Van Alstyne. “It's an amazing community effort and a testament to the spirit of Liberty.” The official 50-year celebration will take place at the Liberty High School Cafeteria on Friday, December 1st, starting at 5 p.m., with the star lighting at 6 p.m. There will be light refreshments, a brief presentation on the history of the star and a special visit from Santa Claus himself. Participants are encouraged to bring donations of warm clothing or new, unwrapped toys to be distributed to local families in need this holiday season. Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County (CCESC)’s 4-H program is offering ten stations of make-and-take projects on Saturday, December 2, 2017 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Extension Education Center located on 64 Ferndale-Loomis Road in Liberty. A snow date is scheduled for December 3. Parents are welcome and children younger than 8 must be accompanied by an adult.
