cientists believe that the oldest star in the known universe is around 13.8 billion years old and only 7,500 light years away from Earth. You don’t need to go that far to find inspiration in the stars. The Liberty Holiday Star, located on Youngs Hill a few miles outside of town, may only be 50 years old but it’s brought joy to countless people throughout that time. It all started back in 1967 when New York State Trooper Richard Van Alstyne nailed some boards together to create a five-sided Christmas star measuring 24 feet from point to point. With the help of Chester Slater and his friends at the New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) company, the Liberty star has been making the holiday season a little brighter ever since. A 50-year anniversary ceremony was held at the Liberty High School on December 1 marking this momentous occasion. Organized by the Van Alstyne and Johnstone families, as well as the Spirit of Liberty - a group dedicated to championing volunteerism and community revitalization, the evening was a warm moment at the beginning of the holiday season for friends and family to

yourself lucky if you’re there to witness it,” Tim Bult said, speaking about his mother’s involvement in maintaining the star. “Here we are, 50 years later.” Bult said his childhood home sat at the base of Youngs Hill, adjacent to the Van Alstyne property. Bult has fond memories of his mother driving him up Youngs Hill on a snowmobile each winter to see the lighting of the star. Lately the task preserving the star has fallen to another New York State Trooper family. The Johnstones have been involved with the Liberty Star for years, and the tradition is carried on to this day by Troy Johnstone and his father Steve. “The star has always been a part of my life,” Troy Johnstone said. “I am one of the lucky ones who can sit in my house and see it lit up at Christmas time.” Johnstone no longer has to climb a ladder to change the star’s light bulbs. Recently Ross Electric loaned a bucket truck to help get the star in shape for its 50th birthday. “It’s not something that I or anyone else in the community considers to be a chore or a burden,” Johnstone explained. “Liberty is proud of the star, and I know that I’m proud to be a steward to continue this tradition.”

According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (NCPPSP) 96 percent of dogs surrendered had no formal obedience training. Gifting training will almost certainly ensure the animal will never be relinquished for behavior issues. Do not gift a pet to a child without involving their parents in the decision making process. Do not resort to gifting a pet as a last minute decision. Animals require a lot of responsibility and can cost thousands of dollars a year, and so the decision should not be rushed. Don’t forget that even the little ones need a proper habitat and a good exercise option. Smaller doesn’t always equal easier. Callicoon’s ready for Christmas STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEANNE SAGER

T

he volunteers of the Delaware Youth Center and Callicoon Girl Scouts (along with long-time leader Joanne Rosenberger) came together once again Saturday for the facility's annual kid’s Christmas party. With Santa on hand to gather kids' wish lists and pose for photos, plus a room full of elves leading kids through ornament making and cupcake decorating, the center was brimming with the holiday spirit.

Clockwise from above: Emma McKeon of Equinunk, Pa., grins as Santa pops up from his seat for a visit. Allison Kelly, 5, gets a little help from mom Angela to complete one of the crafts. Adriana Razukas, 5, of Youngsville, and big sister Kaitlyn, 9, have a chat with Santa. Nine-year-old Meghan Kelly was one of the many kids volunteering for the day.

It’s always Christmas at Maplehorst Farm Nursery STORY AND PHOTOS BY MATT SHORTALL

E

very year across the United States, millions of families visit local farms to cut down a Christmas tree that will grace their house throughout the holiday season. Here in Sullivan County, MapleHorst Farm Nursery on Rapp Road outside of Monticello has been in the Christmas tree business for four generations. John Rapp owns and operates Maplehorst with his son and daughter. John’s grandfather,

George Rapp, started Maplehorst farm in the late 1920s after moving to the area from New York City. George Rapp started out by collecting local fauna - native Moun-

tain Laurels, Rhododendrons, and Hemlocks. From these humble beginnings, George Rapp started a nursery and a landscaping business. “My grandfather originally started growing Christmas trees as something to keep the landscape helpers busy,” said Rapp. The Rapps started out growing Scotch Pine trees, because they were the first farm-grown trees and were more dense than the wild trees grown in Canada. Today, Maplehorst

grows Fraser Fir, Balsam Fir, Blue Spruce and Canaan Fir trees. Fraser Fir, named for John Fraser (1750-1811), a Scot botanist who explored the southern Appalachian Mountains in the late 18th century, are the most popular choice as Christmas Trees. Growing the perfect Christmas tree requires time and patience. “The trees are five year transplants when we get them, and it takes about seven to ten years before they’re fully grown,” said Rapp. This 40-acre farm supports about 1200 Christmas trees per acre. When it comes to buying a Christmas tree this season, some families opt for the artificial trees, but CONTINUED ON 14G

cutting down a real tree at a Christmas tree farm is far more environmentally friendly. “Not only are they a renewable and biodegradable resource, but real trees are much less of a fire hazard than the artificial trees,” Rapp explained. “We recommend you put a

saucer of water under the tree stump to help keep it hydrated and fresh, that will reduce the number of pine needles it sheds and a hydrated tree is very unlikely to catch fire.” When you’re growing such a large quantity of Christmas trees in such a relatively small area, you have to contend with the rest of nature. Deer can be a real problem for the Rapps. Given the opportunity, a deer will eat a young tree down to a pencil-sized stem. The Rapps have electrified fencing that runs the perimeter of their property to ward off any unwanted diners. While Maplehorst is careful to keep the deer out, they’re very accommodating to their customers. You can hike out into a forest of Christmas

trees and cut down your own, or you can choose one of the fully prepared trees from their lot. Maplehorst’s friendly staff will bundle your tree for transport and help you load it onto your vehicle. Once you’ve got your perfect Christmas tree, browse through the Maplehorst Christmas shoppe fea-

turing countless ornaments and homemade Christmas wreaths. The walls are decorated with antique flyer sleds and hundreds of holiday nicknacks. “We think about Christmas all year long,” said John Rapp Jr.

Rohman’s Pub Just across the Delaware River in Shohola, Pa., Rohman’s Pub sits along the train tracks, a destination for locals, tourists, and regulars alike. Housed in the former Shohola Hotel building, erected in 1849, Rohman’s acquired its current moniker and operation when purchased by Art Rohman in 1909. Sheila Farrell and her family took over ownership and operations when he died in 1973. Stepping through the front door of Rohman’s is like stepping back in time. From the original, hand carved bar, tin ceilings, fold up bar stools (installed in the 1930’s to meet regulations) food orders delivered to the kitchen via dumb waiter, and a setyour-own pins bowling alley on the second floor, Rohman’s is nostalgia. So much so that you can ask

omes across the county are decked out for the holidays. Take a look for yourself!

Few holiday traditions bring out the creativity in us more than decorating our homes for the holidays, creating both an amazing spectacle and something to be proud of. Here are a few examples of the holiday spirit across Sullivan County. Clockwise from top left: Michael Haberzetti set up this dazzling display in White Sulphur Springs; This snowman greets those who pass with a wave at Kristina and Steven Snedeker’s residence in Fosterdale; and there are several characters gracing this lawn in Glen Spey. Christmas Carol at Shadowland

S

hadowland Stages, located at 157 Canal Street in Ellenville, concludes its 33rd season with “Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol,” a play by Tom Mula adapted from the classic story by Charles Dickens, playing from December 1-17. Charles Dickens’ classic tale of greed redeemed into hope, kindness, and love is now told from a very unusual point-of-view in “Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol,” a charming seasonal classic with a signature Shadowland twist! Find out just what happened to Scrooge’s wicked business partner as he takes his own theatrical voyage, with an imaginative cast of actors creating a wintery, magical world. Brought to life with a soundscape of music and folly live on stage, this immortal tale stands out from the crowd as an epic journey that the whole family can enjoy. “Marley was dead, to begin with...” And what happens to Ebenezer Scrooge’s mean, sour, pruney old business partner after that? Chained and shackled, Marley is condemned to a hellish eternity. He’s even given his

So begins a journey of laughter and terror, redemption and renewal, during which Scrooge’s heart, indeed, is opened; but not before Marley—in this irreverent,

duction stage manager is Olivia Gemelli. The cast includes: Sean Cullen, Paul Murphy, Julia Register and David Stallings. Christmas Carol tickets are $39 on Thursday, Friday, Saturday at 8 p.m.; $34 Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. For this holiday treat, Shadowland is offering a very special discount price of just $15 for children 16 and under, accompanied by an adult, for all performances. Discounts are also available for group sales and deals with select local restaurants. Also, get 2018 tickets at 2017 prices!
