This holiday season we need to say ‘Thanks’

T

his Holiday Season is going to be one like no other. While the country continues to fight off the world-wide pandemic, large family gatherings and big Holiday extravaganzas are probably out of the question. But there is still many ways we can celebrate the Spirit of the Season and make this Holiday Season one to remember and a meaningful tribute to what we are going through. We have included an article in this issue entitled, “Giving thanks, and giving back.” It details nearly a dozen ways you can support local groups – either through donations of your time or money – to make a difference in someone else’s life. There are certainly many families in our community in need of help. From the Federation for the Homeless, to local food pantries to helping out our senior citizens, there are plenty of groups already in place that could use our support. The holidays always seem to bring out the best in our communities and we hope this year is no different.

Shop Local, Support Local And while we are talking Holidays, we urge all of our local residents to Shop Local, Support Local! We know how convenient online shopping has become, but supporting our Main Street businesses in both Sullivan and Wayne counties should be at the top of our list this year. Now, more than ever, local businesses need our support, and we can send a strong message to everyone about how important they are by buying local.

Every $1 spent locally has a huge impact on our economy, from supporting jobs, keeping taxes down to keeping our businesses open. While the world is now at our fingertips, the communities we drive through every day need our support. Please make it a point to spend some time browsing through this wonderful Gift Guide and finding the stores that meet your needs. And while you are at it, enjoy a lunch or dinner at a nearby restaurant. Your day will be more enjoyable knowing you helped keep our local businesses strong. The Sullivan Catskills Visitors Association is also sponsoring a great Holiday Gift Card Program whereby they are giving people an extra $25 if they buy a $100 gift card to a local business. Now that’s an inspiration. Go to https://sullivancatskills.com/you-can-support-localbusiness/ to find out more.

Remember your family and friends 2020 – despite its name – will probably not be a year we want to look back on, at least fondly. But there is no better time than now, this Holiday Season, to reach out to friends, family and especially our senior citizens, to see how they are doing and enjoy some fellowship, even if it is only by telephone. By our very nature, most of us enjoy social interaction and wishing someone a Happy Hanukkah, Happy Thanksgiving, or Merry Christmas is a wonderful excuse for picking up the phone. And while we are at, we wish all of our loyal readers and advertisers a Blessed, Happy, and Healthy Holiday Season. Enjoy!

T

hanksgiving is usually a time for families and friends to get together, celebrate and be thankful for everything that has happened in the past year. And it is typically the start of the holiday season with Christmas, Hanukkah, and the New Year’s holiday happening soon after. However, this year will be different due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and recently, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has put restrictions on social gatherings in order to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Restaurants and bars can no longer be open to the public after 10 p.m. and will then have to shift to a take out model for the remaining hours they’re open. Furthermore, there can be no social gatherings of 10 or more people in your home. As of our publication date, the COVID-19 cases are on the rise, and we could be entering a second wave of the pandemic. One significant way you can stay

CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS

This Thanksgiving, you can still enjoy time with family and still be safe during the pandemic.

safe this holiday season is not to leave your house and have Thanksgiving with only those who live in your home. You can still enjoy the day by cooking your favorite meals and watching holiday movies. How can you interact with relatives who do not live with you? If

you have a phone or laptop, you can set up a Zoom, Skype, or Facetime video call with them while you are gathering. This way, you can stay connected during the holiday and make sure everyone stays safe. While this year might not be the perfect Thanksgiving you had

envisioned, you can still make the holiday fun and remain safe. If we follow the Center for Disease Control guidelines and stay safe, we can ensure that next year’s holiday could be better, and it can return to “normal” again. According to the Center for Disease Control, the following people should not attend any Thanksgiving gathering: • Those with or have been exposed to COVID-19. The CDC also says that you should not host or participate in any in-person gatherings if you or anyone in your household has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and has not met the criteria for when they should be around people. • If the person has symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath. If a person is waiting for test results from a COVID-19 test, they should not host or go to any social gatherings. Moreover, if a person was exposed to someone positive with COVID-19 in the last 14 days, they are at an increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

Who is at risk? If you are an older adult and or if you are a person with certain medical conditions or live with a person who is considered at high risk, you should avoid social gatherings this holiday season. If you must attend a social gathering, there are some things you should consider. You should check the local COVID-19 infection rate and then think about whether it is safe to attend a social gathering. You should try and limit the number of guests at the social gathering; in New York State, that means adhering to the 10 people limit. You need to remain at least six feet apart at all times and avoid direct contact, which includes handshakes and hugs, with others not from their household. Consider hosting the gathering outside instead of indoors to increase the safety of all who attend. Whether you are indoors or out, you should always wear a mask, except when you are eating and drinking. If having a gathering indoors, you should have a well-ventilated area by opening windows and using an

SULLIVAN COUNTY DEMOCRAT

air purifier. Have all your guests wear a mask, and they should routinely wash their hands. Another tip suggested by the CDC is to keep the music level down to avoid people shouting and further spreading air droplets. Stay safe, wear your mask, and wash your hands.

Stay safe this Thanksgiving by following CDC guidelines.

SCVA continues to support local businesses through Gift Certificate Program

C

OVID-19 changed the way that many of our businesses function. They had to be innovative to keep their doors open, lights on and maintain staff. The Sullivan Catskills Visitors Association (SCVA) quickly responded to the needs of members, creating a gift certificate program to help them prosper through this current storm. “Our small businesses are the backbone of our tourism industry,” stated Roberta ByronLockwood, President/CEO. “It’s our friends and neighbors who are small business owners. They get up early to prepare their specialty shop; family restaurant; or hotels, inns and B&Bs for the day. Their commitment and quality of

their products and hospitality are why our travelers visit and return yearafter-year. It is a time for us to support those who have made the Sullivan Catskills a world recognized destination,” Byron-Lockwood, continued. The goal for the SCVA Gift Certificate Program is to encourage residents and visitors to shop on our quaint main streets, dine at our renowned restaurants and overnight at one of our prized accommodations. Great gifts for fly-fishers

I

BY JUDY VAN PUT

t’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is just a few days away and the holiday shopping season is here. With concerns about the pandemic and possible return to lockdowns, many online retailers are offering early “Black Friday” sales and other deep discounts for home shoppers. But many of these online merchants are taking away business from our local merchants. Fortunately, we have a number of local establishments that offer, in addition to in-store shopping, online shopping as well as curbside pickup, and the extra “personal touch” and customer assistance that is missing when you order from a big box store or online business that is far away. For fly-fishers, there is a wealth of

gift opportunities to choose from that will fit within pretty much any budget. Beginning with flies, if you consider how long the fishing season is (in most streams from April 1 – October 15, and even year-round in the special fishing regulation “NoKill” areas) fly-fishers can go through a lot of flies each year. Whether dry flies, wet flies, nymphs or streamers, most anglers would be happy to receive a box of flies, especially if they do not tie their own. Another thought along the same line is a basic fly-tying kit for those who are beginners or who have not yet tied their own flies; or tools and materials for fly-tying for those who do. Beaverkill Angler offers fly-tying classes over the winter, which might be a thoughtful gift – you can call and inquire at 607-498-5194. Or how about a gift of a fly-fishing

lesson – lessons are offered at both Beaverkill Angler and Dette Flies (845-439-1166). Other gift ideas include fly boxes, tippets (4x, 5x, 6x, 7x are the most popular and are very-much used

HELP MAKE E THE HOLIDAY SEASON BRIGHT FO OR CHILDREN IN NEED.

There are a number of styles and sizes of fishing nets on the market that would make a nice gift for the angler on your list. And don’t forget a net retriever to affix the net to the back of the fishing vest.

with perhaps a little fishing journal in which catches can be recorded. You might consider a fishing vest or backpack for storing fishing tackle and flies while fishing. Polarized sunglasses are helpful, as well as a good-quality rain jacket and hat. And then there are largerticket items such as a new rod and reel or waders. There are how-to books and videos available on flytying and fly-fishing that are sure to bring pleasant thoughts to those dreaming about their favorite pasttime during the long, cold winter nights. In addition to “how-to” books, there are many books about fishing – perhaps one that features the angler’s favorite river or stream or region to fish might be a good fit. For more suggestions, call or visit one of our local outdoor shops. Nearby, in the fly-fishing towns of Livingston Manor and Roscoe, you can order by phone and pick up ‘curbside’ in addition to ordering online – at Dette Flies and Beaverkill Angler. Trout Town Flies will be open until the end of November, but the other shops will remain open through the entire holiday season. Fur Fin & Feather is located at 111 DeBruce Rd, Livingston Manor, and is open Wednesdays through Sundays – store hours are from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Wednesday thru Saturday, and 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Sunday. They do not have a website but have plenty of merchandise in their store. Call 845-439-4476 for more information. Dette Flies is located at 13 Main

or nearly 15 years, Canal Towne Emporium in Wurtsboro has hosted the Dance of the Lights light show. Dance of the Lights is performed every single night from the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve beginning at 7 p.m. Each show is 15 minutes long, featuring four songs. For 2020, they are re-introducing Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in a new light and music version. The show takes place on the outside of Canal Towne Emporium, with the audience standing across the street. The lights stretch across the entire front of Canal Towne and features exciting patterns that ‘dance’ along with the music. The show has been presented

for about 15 years, starting as the brainchild of Michael Roosa, who

moved the light show from the front of his house to Canal Towne,

where it has been ever since. While Michael has ‘retired’ from active show and design duties, Dance of the Lights continues under Canal Towne co-owner Gary Holmes, with new lighting effects and a rotating roster of songs added every year. Over 10,000 lights are strung for the show, along with animated figures, taking dozens of hours to set up, with each new song taking up to 40 hours to individually program. Dance of the Lights has become an annual family tradition, with folks coming from all over as part of their holiday celebration. Canal Towne itself is open during this period from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. On Sunday, they close at 5 p.m. but the light show still goes on at 7 p.m. on Sundays, as well.

The Vintage Ornament Wreaths Show

T

hirty years ago Brandi Merolla began buying vintage Christmas ornaments at yard sales here in the region. She was drawn to the classic colors of Shiny-Brite balls, old fashioned Santa Claus’, reindeer, kneehuggers and snowmen ornaments. Twenty years later, after amassing a huge vintage ornament collection, Merolla started making wreaths with her acquisitions. With a long career in display-making for FAO Schwarz and the record industry, she began assembling vintage elements in her wreaths, hearkening the nostalgia of holidays gone

by, while recycling all at the same time. The Narrowsburg Union is showing scores of Merolla’s newest Vintage Ornament Wreaths in their Eagle, Owl and Hawk Galleries from November 27 - January 4. “My wreath show promises to take viewers of all ages away to happier times.” The Vintage Ornament Wreath Show hours are Monday-Saturday 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. The Union is located at 7 Erie Avenue in Narrowsburg. All wreaths are for sale.

Keeping traditions alive during an unusual holiday season ates are powerful. In fact, 44 percent of people say the holiday spirit wouldn’t be the same if they didn’t have their traditional holiday dessert. If you are like many families, that favorite dessert is Kringle, a traditional Danish treat made of 36 layers of butter and pastry. Among O&H’s special holiday offerings are Thanksgiving Stuffed Kringle, A Very Danish Christmas Kringle and the classic Pecan Kringle. Over the past 70 years, the award-winning bakery has shipped to more than 100 countries, making landfall in all seven continents, including Antarctica. This year, doorstep delivery makes it easy to order a traditional favorite for your own household or send a gift to family members near and far. Visit ohdanishbakery.com. • Plan ahead: When it comes to ordering gifts and specially baked treats, make sure to account for busy schedules and congested delivery services to ensure all your goodies arrive on time. Take note of shipping times and policies, as well

as ordering deadlines for each company. For example, O&H allows customers to pre-order Kringle and schedule a preferred delivery date in the future. • Create hygge: Evoking the sights, sounds and aromas of a typical holiday season will help make this year feel more cheerful. Take a cue from Danish culture and embrace hygge. Pronounced “hoo-ga,” it means

creating a cozy atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life, such as the warm glow of candlelight or a steaming cup of cocoa -and there is no better time of year to do it than the holiday season. This year might be especially difficult for families who are physically separated, but there are many ways to spread cheer and keep traditions alive. (StatePoint)

his holiday season may look a bit different due to social distancing. But just because everyone is not physically together, doesn’t mean your family can’t share its favorite traditions. The Olesen family of O&H Danish Bakery knows how important holiday traditions are to feeling connected to loved ones. Now in its fourth generation, the familyowned and operated bakery is sharing its best tips for creating holiday cheer from anywhere: • Celebrate virtually: In a survey commissioned by O&H Danish Bakery and conducted by SWNS Media Group and OnePoll, nearly 80 percent of respondents say time with family is their favorite part of the holiday season. Whether your tradition is a Christmas movie marathon, a caroling session around the piano or eating certain foods and baked treats, you can enjoy these activities together over video chat this year. • Share traditional foods: The sensory memories that good food cre-

Giving thanks, and giving back Eleven charities for the eleventh month

s we approach the 2020 holidays, our thoughts turn to celebrating the season. Part of that celebration traditionally includes giving thanks for everything we have, and sharing our bounty with those less fortunate. While we don’t have room to mention all the local charities, here are 11 ideas for sharing what you can with our fellow Sullivan County residents.

1) Federation for the Homeless The Sullivan County Federation for the Homeless operates the only full-time soup kitchen in Sullivan County. Right now, due to COVID-19, volunteer opportunities are limited, so call the number below for more information. ShopRite of Monticello is offering pre-made bags for customers to purchase with donations going to the Federation. The bags, priced at around $5 each, include shelf-stable foods for the holiday, like stuffing mix, canned vegeta-

bles and gravy to help families create the holiday. No individual food or clothing donations are being accepted at this time, but cash donations are always welcome. Just use the “Donate” button on their website: www.scfederation.org or call 794-2604. 2) Animal Rescue and Services Animal rescue and adoption agencies in Sullivan County can always use assistance. You can help by fostering, adopt-

ing, volunteering, donating wish-list items, and with cash donations. Shelter hours are by appointment. Check out websites or Facebook pages for ways to donate. Look for: Sullivan County SPCA (www.sullivanspca.org), Catskill Animal Rescue (www.catskillanimalrescue.net), Rocky’s Refuge (www.rockysrefuge.org), Equine Rescue (www.equine-rescue.org), The Animal Rights Alliance (T.A.R.A.) low cost spaying and neutering (www.tara-spayneuter.org), and Happy Kitty (Facebook), which reduces the number of stray and feral cats by humanely trapping, neutering/spaying and releasing.

The Delaware Valley Opera performed the popular Gilbert & Sullivan operetta “The Mikado” back in 2017 to standingroom-only houses.

3) Performing Arts Organizations and Venues Unable to perform or showcase, arts organizations and venues have been suffering greatly during the pandemic and can really use your help to stay afloat. No donation is too small to assist these establishments that have brought so much joy to so many hearts. This list is by no means inclusive, as there are many arts programs in Sullivan County. Consider a search at: sullivancatskills.com

(explore; art and culture). Here is a sampling of arts groups that can use your help: the Forestburgh Playhouse (www.fbplayhouse.org), the Shandelee Music Festival (www.shandelee.org), Bethel Woods Center for the Arts (www.bethelwoodscenter.org), the Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop (www.scdw.net), Hurleyville Arts Centre (hurleyvilleartscentre.org), Delaware Valley Opera (delawarevalleyopera.com), North American Cultural Laboratory

Non-denominational holiday trees have ornaments that list a child’s first name, age, size and hobby information. Now through December 4, you can take an ornament and buy an appropriate gift, returning it for Club staff and members to distribute to children in need. Find a Giving Tree host site at www.bgcorange.org/news-events/the-giving-tree.html or call 342-8833. Also, if you have the means, please consider donating to Frost Valley YMCA. Each summer, Frost Valley YMCA provides exceptional outdoor experiences for over 4,000 children through day and overnight camp programs that include but are not limited to: equestrian camp, farm camp, adventure trips, a “Kidney Camp” for children with kidney disease or transplants, and of course the traditional overnight camp that Frost Valley has provided since 1885. Find out more at www.asinglebite.org or call 4821030. 6) Family Services Catholic Charities of Orange, Sullivan and Ulster is sponsoring an Adopt-aFamily Christmas Giving Program that accepts donations of toys, winter clothing, gift cards and cash. Contact Catholic Charities Resource Exchange Coordinator Michael Peters at 562-4733 or write to him at Michael.Peters@cccsos.org. Gifts should be delivered by December 11. 7) Advocacy Action Toward Independence (ATI), with offices in Monticello and Middletown, promotes independence, inclusion, participation and personal choice, and advocates for the legal and civil rights of individuals with disabilities. Services and programs include mental health peer support, veterans' advocacy, educational support, benefits advisement, skills training and loan programs. ATI assists people in reaching their goals, whether it be independent living, job attainment or assistance with federal or state programs, organizations or businesses. ATI accepts cash donations as well as cars, boats, motorcycles and other vehicles. Find out more at www.atitoday.org or at 794-4228. 8) Literacy Volunteers & Libraries One in five adults in Sullivan County functions at the lowest level of literacy. 5) Food Hunger, unfortunately, is always with us. Many local towns have food pantries based at local houses of worship. Find your local food pantry by calling your town, church or synagogue, or contribute to food drives at supermarkets and other stores. The Youth Economic Group (YEG) in Liberty is accepting cash donations for their food drive at Paesano’s Pizza, the Liberty Diner and Casi’s Family Diner (all in Liberty). Gift cards and nonperishable food items can also be donated – call 539-5069 to find out where. Also, consider donating to A Single Bite. Founded by Sims Foster and Kirsten Harlow Foster of Foster Supply Hospitality, A Single Bite, was instituted four years ago to educate and empower young people to care about the food they eat and where it comes from. When schools closed due to COVID-19, the organization started providing free, healthy meals to help local needy families. Donations go
