This holiday season we need to say ‘Thanks’

his Holiday Season is going to be one like no other. While the country continues to fight off the world-wide pandemic, large family gatherings and big Holiday extravaganzas are probably out of the question. But there is still many ways we can celebrate the Spirit of the Season and make this Holiday Season one to remember and a meaningful tribute to what we are going through. We have included an article in this issue entitled, “Giving thanks, and giving back.” It details nearly a dozen ways you can support local groups – either through donations of your time or money – to make a difference in someone else’s life. There are certainly many families in our community in need of help. From the Federation for the Homeless, to local food pantries to helping out our senior citizens, there are plenty of groups already in place that could use our support. The holidays always seem to bring out the best in our communities and we hope this year is no different.

Shop Local, Support Local And while we are talking Holidays, we urge all of our local residents to Shop Local, Support Local! We know how convenient online shopping has become, but supporting our Main Street businesses in both Sullivan and Wayne counties should be at the top of our list this year. he sixth annual Dickens on the Delaware will be held on Saturday, December 12 from noon to 8 p.m. Shops, galleries and restaurants will highlight their holiday goods and dazzle town visitors with their holiday spirit. environs decorated to create the days of yore. Callicoon will be transformed into a Christmas wonderland with Christmas trees and festive wreaths and streets filled with holiday lights. hanksgiving is usually a time for families and friends to get together, celebrate and be thankful for everything that has happened in the past year. And it is typically the start of the holiday season with Christmas, Hanukkah, and the New Year’s holiday happening soon after. However, this year will be different due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and recently, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has put restrictions on social gatherings in order to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Restaurants and bars can no longer be open to the public after 10 p.m. and will then have to shift to a take out model for the remaining hours they’re open. Furthermore, there can be no social gatherings of 10 or more people in your home. As of our publication date, the COVID-19 cases are on the rise, and we could be entering a second wave of the pandemic. One significant way you can stay

safe this holiday season is not to leave your house and have Thanksgiving with only those who live in your home. You can still enjoy the day by cooking your favorite meals and watching holiday movies. How can you interact with relatives who do not live with you? If

you have a phone or laptop, you can set up a Zoom, Skype, or Facetime video call with them while you are gathering. This way, you can stay connected during the holiday and make sure everyone stays safe. While this year might not be the perfect Thanksgiving you had

envisioned, you can still make the holiday fun and remain safe. If we follow the Center for Disease Control guidelines and stay safe, we can ensure that next year’s holiday could be better, and it can return to “normal” again. According to the Center for Disease Control, the following people should not attend any Thanksgiving gathering: • Those with or have been exposed to COVID-19. The CDC also says that you should not host or participate in any in-person gatherings if you or anyone in your household has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and has not met the criteria for when they should be around people. • If the person has symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath. If a person is waiting for test results from a COVID-19 test, they should not host or go to any social gatherings. Moreover, if a person was exposed to someone positive with COVID-19 in the last 14 days, they are at an increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

Who is at risk? If you are an older adult and or if you are a person with certain medical conditions or live with a person who is considered at high risk, you should avoid social gatherings this holiday season. If you must attend a social gathering, there are some things you should consider. You should check the local COVID-19 infection rate and then think about whether it is safe to attend a social gathering. You should try and limit the number of guests at the social gathering; in New York State, that means adhering to the 10 people limit. You need to remain at least six feet apart at all times and avoid direct contact, which includes handshakes and hugs, with others not from their household. Consider hosting the gathering outside instead of indoors to increase the safety of all who attend. Whether you are indoors or out, you should always wear a mask, except when you are eating and drinking. If having a gathering indoors, you should have a well-ventilated area by opening windows and using an

air purifier. Have all your guests wear a mask, and they should routinely wash their hands. Another tip suggested by the CDC is to keep the music level down to avoid people shouting and further spreading air droplets. Stay safe, wear your mask, and wash your hands.

t’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is just a few days away and the holiday shopping season is here. With concerns about the pandemic and possible return to lockdowns, many online retailers are offering early “Black Friday” sales and other deep discounts for home shoppers. But many of these online merchants are taking away business from our local merchants. Fortunately, we have a number of local establishments that offer, in addition to in-store shopping, online shopping as well as curbside pickup, and the extra “personal touch” and customer assistance that is missing when you order from a big box store or online business that is far away. For fly-fishers, there is a wealth of

gift opportunities to choose from that will fit within pretty much any budget. Beginning with flies, if you consider how long the fishing season is (in most streams from April 1 – October 15, and even year-round in the special fishing regulation “NoKill” areas) fly-fishers can go through a lot of flies each year. Whether dry flies, wet flies, nymphs or streamers, most anglers would be happy to receive a box of flies, especially if they do not tie their own. Another thought along the same line is a basic fly-tying kit for those who are beginners or who have not yet tied their own flies; or tools and materials for fly-tying for those who do. or nearly 15 years, Canal Towne Emporium in Wurtsboro has hosted the Dance of the Lights light show. Dance of the Lights is performed every single night from the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve beginning at 7 p.m. Each show is 15 minutes long, featuring four songs. For 2020, they are re-introducing Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in a new light and music version. The show takes place on the outside of Canal Towne Emporium, with the audience standing across the street. The lights stretch across the entire front of Canal Towne and features exciting patterns that ‘dance’ along with the music. The show has been presented

for about 15 years, starting as the brainchild of Michael Roosa, who

moved the light show from the front of his house to Canal Towne,

where it has been ever since. While Michael has ‘retired’ from active show and design duties, Dance of the Lights continues under Canal Towne co-owner Gary Holmes, with new lighting effects and a rotating roster of songs added every year. Over 10,000 lights are strung for the show, along with animated figures, taking dozens of hours to set up, with each new song taking up to 40 hours to individually program. Dance of the Lights has become an annual family tradition, with folks coming from all over as part of their holiday celebration. Canal Towne itself is open during this period from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. On Sunday, they close at 5 p.m. but the light show still goes on at 7 p.m. on Sundays, as well.

The light show features a spectacular 120-foot Twinkle Tunnel and themed areas, including: Groovy Way, an

Enchanted Forest, Snowflake Alley and Santa’s Workshop. Dinners with Santa, discounted tickets to The Museum at Bethel Woods, and special promotional nights will also be available. hirty years ago Brandi Merolla began buying vintage Christmas ornaments at yard sales here in the region. She was drawn to the classic colors of Shiny-Brite balls, old fashioned Santa Claus’, reindeer, kneehuggers and snowmen ornaments. Twenty years later, after amassing a huge vintage ornament collection, Merolla started making wreaths with her acquisitions. s we approach the 2020 holidays, our thoughts turn to celebrating the season. Part of that celebration traditionally includes giving thanks for everything we have, and sharing our bounty with those less fortunate. While we don’t have room to mention all the local charities, here are 11 ideas for sharing what you can with our fellow Sullivan County residents.

1) Federation for the Homeless The Sullivan County Federation for the Homeless operates the only full-time soup kitchen in Sullivan County. Right now, due to COVID-19, volunteer opportunities are limited, so call the number below for more information. ShopRite of Monticello is offering pre-made bags for customers to purchase with donations going to the Federation. The bags, priced at around $5 each, include shelf-stable foods for the holiday, like stuffing mix, canned vegeta-

bles and gravy to help families create the holiday. No individual food or clothing donations are being accepted at this time, but cash donations are always welcome. ATI assists people in reaching their goals, whether it be independent living, job attainment or assistance with federal or state programs, organizations or businesses. 5) Food Hunger, unfortunately, is always with us. Many local towns have food pantries based at local houses of worship. Find your local food pantry by calling your town, church or synagogue, or contribute to food drives at supermarkets and other stores. The Youth Economic Group (YEG) in Liberty is accepting cash donations for their food drive at Paesano’s Pizza, the Liberty Diner and Casi’s Family Diner (all in Liberty). Founded by Sims Foster and Kirsten Harlow Foster of Foster Supply Hospitality, A Single Bite, was instituted four years ago to educate and empower young people to care about the food they eat and where it comes from.
