Whodunit? “My Fair Lady” • June 17 – 29 The story of the cockney flower girl who learns to become a lady has become

“Mame!” • July 1 – 13 It’s madcap Auntie Mame to the rescue, as she sails through life with her zany friends and nephew in tow! Loretta Swit stars as the lady herself, and Jerry Herman’s bouncy score is one of his best! If we could all have Mame’s optimism and zest, what a wonderful world it would be! First time ever at the Playhouse! “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” • July 15 – 28 Loretta Swit stars as Madam Mona in this happy-go-lucky tale of small town vice and political shenanigans that recounts the story of the Chicken Ranch, one of the better pleasure palaces in all of Texas. A

great musical score that’s just a little bit country.

“The Chosen” • August 26 – 31 Tells the much-beloved story of two boys, two fathers, and two very different Jewish communities in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Set against the backdrop of

World War II, the boys learn powerful lessons about their fathers, their communities, and themselves. Unforgettable.

“Mary Poppins” • July 29 – August 10 Fresh from Broadway and featuring an irresistible story and unforgettable songs from one of the most popular Disney films of all time, Mary Poppins is the perfect family show! “La Cage aux Folles” • August 12 – 24 The good cheer and unflagging tunefulness of this naughty but nice fast stepping extravaganza delight everyone. Jerry Herman wrote the terrific score for this tale of a French Riviera nightclub where the showgirls aren’t exactly what they seem!

Hillside Greenhouse offers a winter wonderland STORY AND PHOTOS BY SHARON SPACE-BAMBERGER

H

illside Greenhouses is one of the oldest florists in the Sullivan County area. Co-owner Dale Van Denberg revealed, “The Van Denberg family came here in 1963, we are celebrating our fiftieth year.” Wife Carol runs the business with Dale. Floral designer Joseph Topolsix has worked for the Van Denbergs for 32 of those 50 years and he is proud of the business. “Currently we are offering Christmas trees, wreaths and roping. We have beautiful poinsettias, cyclamens and other flowering plants. We have dozens of different holiday floral arrangements including table centerpieces. We also offer fresh fruit baskets, gourmet meat and cheese assortments and Kosher

dried fruit and nut trays,” said Topolsix. All of the above are available for local delivery or by wire. Credit cards welcomed. Hillside also offers custom landscaping. During the time of the Democrat’s visit, Hillside crews were busy decorating the grounds and interior of a local home. The happy homeowner had a striking holiday display without getting frost bit. Hillside Greenhouse is located at 1 Kaempfer Lane, Liberty (next to the Liberty Firehouse). Call 292-5770. Floral Designer Joseph Topolsix, left, and Hillside coowner Dale Van Denberg pose with a display of long lasting Cyclamen plants and small evergreens.

Tips and tricks for a perfect Christmas tree A

Tips for selecting the best Christmas tree:

s families brave the elements

this weekend to pick the per•••••• ••••• ••••• fect Christmas tree, Cornell

University experts offer a few tips on choosing a tree as well as some tricks to preserve its beauty throughout the season. Elizabeth Lamb has a Ph.D. in plant breeding and is a senior extension associate with the Cornell Cooperative Extension’s New York State Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. Brian Eshenaur is a plant pathologist, a certified New York State nursery professional and a Western New York-based educator with NYS IPM. Lamb says: “Due to regular rainfall most growers had a good year and there are lots of beautiful trees available despite seeing a bit of Phytophthora, a kind of root rot, in the fields. “The fresher the tree the better, which is a good reason to buy local. The branches should be springy and smell good. A few loose needles aren’t a problem but you shouldn’t get handfuls when you brush the branches.” Eshenaur says: “The best way to preserve the tree’s freshness is to keep plenty of fresh water in the tree stand. If possible, when you bring it home, make a new cut from the bottom of the trunk if you think the tree has spent some time on the tree lot and the cut stump looks weathered and dirty. That way you’re sure to have open ‘pipework’ to keep the water flowing to the needles.”

Also, the shoots should be flexible. Avoid a tree if the needles shed or if the shoots crack or snap with handling. Christmas trees should smell good. If there isn’t much fragrance when you flex the needles, it may mean that the tree was cut too long ago. If possible, make a fresh cut on the bottom so the tree’s vascular tissue (pipe work) is not plugged and so the tree can easily take up water. County Cooperative Extension offices often have lists of local Christmas tree growers. You can also check the Christmas Tree Farmers Association of New York website at www.christmastreesny. org/new-york-state.html. For a list of tree farms in Pennsylvania, visit www.christmastrees.org. According to the Pennsylvania Christmas Trees Growers Association, Pennsylvania ranks second in the nation in the number of Christmas tree farms, and fourth in the number of Christmas trees cut each year and acres in production. Pennsylvania is home to over 1,200 farms covering nearly 35,000 acres that produce almost 1.2 million cut trees each year.

Keeping Time: The Photography of Don Hunstein The Unseen Archives of Columbia Records Bethel: The exhibit highlights the 30-year career of Don Hunstein as in-house photographer at Columbia Records in New York City from the 1950s through the 1970s. During that time, Hunstein photographed thousands of rehearsals, recording sessions, and candid moments of some of the era’s most important musicians and singers. His position at Columbia Records gave him unique access to Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Simon & Garfunkel, and countless others, and his photographs capture the true spirit of the performers and their time. When Hunstein arrived in NYC in 1954, Columbia Records was growing and wanted to create an in-house photo department to handle promotional photography, album artwork, and business photography. They hired Hunstein, and he kept the position until Columbia dismantled the in-house studio in 1986. Through the first half of the 20th century, Columbia Records was well known for its recordings of classical and other symphonic music, jazz, and popular music, resisting the trend toward rock ‘n’ roll. That changed when a young folk singer on the label, Bob Dylan, made the shocking move to electrify his music, which initiated their shift toward rock ‘n’ roll.

Books about local history make great holiday gifts

This information comes from County Historian John Conway’s Retrospect column of November 30, 2012 and has been modified and slightly updated. Retrospect appears every Friday in the Sullivan County Democrat. Among Conway’s books still in print are ‘Loomis: The Man, The Sanitarium and The Search for the Cure’ published by Purple Mountain Press. Besides telling the story of one of Sullivan County’s largest and most renowned institutions, the book details the impact the influx of tuberculosis treatment centers had on the county’s resort industry. Other, Conway titles make interesting and informative reading, from History Press: 2008’s ‘Remembering the Sullivan County Catskills’ a compilation of the best of these Retrospect columns from past years, and 2009’s ‘Sullivan County: A Bicentennial History in Images’ a chronological history of the region told mainly in photographs, are available at online booksellers. There are still just a very few copies available of the limited edition booklet,

‘Blessed By The Gods: The History of Sullivan County as a Healing Environment’ which tells the story of how its reputation for possessing special curative properties. To order, send $9.50 (including postage) to Debra Conway/P.O. Box 185/Barryville, NY 12719. ‘Condensed History of the 143d Regiment’: Myron Gittel’s reprinting of the 143rd New York Volunteers regimental history. This new paperback version, which has thumbnails about each of the battles in which the regiment took part as well as the listing of all the soldiers who were part of the regiment, sells for $19.95 and is available at many local retailers. ‘Bethel’: By Town of Bethel Clerk Rita Sheehan is chock full of interesting and rarely seen photos of Black Lake, Bushville, Briscoe, White Lake, Kauneonga Lake, Mongaup Valley, Smallwood, Swan Lake and Bethel, as well as some from the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival. Sheehan’s book also contains a considerable amount of historical information that has not been recorded elsewhere. Available from online

booksellers such as Amazon.com. ‘Mamakating’: Monika A. Roosa’s book was released by Arcadia in 2007, but if you haven’t seen it, make it a point to get it this year. It is packed with great old-time photos of the town from Bloomingburg to Wurtsboro, as it grew from the earliest days when the Lenape held great council fires in the Mamakating valley to the construction of Route 17, the Quickway. ‘Satan’s Circus’: By Mike Dash is a 2008 book about Sullivan County native Charles Becker, a New York City police officer who was executed in 1915 for a murder he quite likely did not commit. ‘Murder & Mayhem in the Catskills’: By Caroline Crane was released by The History Press in the summer of 2008. The book contains a number of great tales of crime and punishment, including some relating to the activities of organized crime and Murder, Inc. here in the county. ‘Making Mountains: New York City and the Catskills’: By David Stradling has an interesting and unique look at the impact New York City has had on

the development of the Catskills, including Sullivan County. ‘Monticello’: By Tom Rue is a pictorial history of the village and provides a heretofore unavailable look at the growth of the county’s first and largest village, from the day in 1804 that John Patterson Jones cut down the first tree for his home till the present day. The book is available from www.tomrue.net. ‘Memoirs from Eldred, New York, 1800-1950’: By Louise Elizabeth Smith and Gary Dean Smith. The latest book, ‘Farewell to Eldred’ concludes the story of the families who settled on either side of Halfway Brook, in the Town of Highland first read about in ‘The Mill on Halfway Brook’ and continued in ‘Echo Hill and Mountain Grove.’ Through the eyes of her Austin and Leavenworth relatives, Louise Smith weaves an account of the daily lives of the descendants of early settlers such as Austin, Leavenworth, Eldred, Myers, Bodine, Bradley, Bosch, Clark, Gardner, Hallock, Mills, Boyd, Horton, Greig, Stege, and more. haring and education about food are just as important as providing the community with fresh locally grown produce, said Calin Riffle, the owner of the newly opened Farm N’ Go store explained about her philosophy. Her message is that using local businesses year round, not just on Small Business Saturday, is beneficial for everyone. She manages the store mostly on her own, while her partner David Morris works in the Heirloom Acres farm, where most of the produce comes from. “Upward of 80 percent of products on grocery store shelves contain GMOs,” she explained, referring to genetically modified organism. “…and that’s a big reason why we felt we have to set up shop, and not just do the farm markets, but to be here all the time.” Calin also wants to make food affordable, and she’s already planning to hang up signs offering permanent discounts to senior citizens, veterans, and firefighters. She also wants to educate people about the food options available, health and environment, and how choosing to stay local helps to put the money back to local economy. “We farm using sustainable methods, permaculture,” Calin said, avoiding using the word “organic,” feeling it’s now too commercialized. She said her farm and many of her suppliers are not certified, because she wants to avoid interference in their farming methods. The quaint store on Route 97 in

Handmade goat milk soaps are good to use on sensitive skin, even on the face, Calin explained.

The customers get a prompt 50 cent store credit, and the jars get recycled. Calin is just about to get the Christmas produce out, including wreaths and beeswax candles, and offers affordable gift baskets ready to wrap. Gift baskets are from $6 to $30. Among the planned education programs, the farm store plans to offer wild mushroom walks where anyone can come along. Calin’s background is 20 years in fashion, living in Manhattan. Giving birth to her son changed her perspective, and she moved to Sullivan County, met David and settled down to farming. Calin and David’s motto is, “We sell what we grow.” The store is open weekends only, Friday and Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.; and Sundays from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. It is located at 3465 Route 97, Barryville. Call 557-0110.

Barryville opened just last July, and Calin said, “It’s been great. It was insanely busy when we first opened, and it’s been steady since. Actually October was the busiest month.” The produce varies seasonally, and pumpkins, mums, and apple cider feature strongly in fall. “I found since we opened the store, it’s become this local hub, from New York[ers] who already are foodies, but we’re also getting a nice group of locals.” All produce includes items prepared by Calin herself, or by people whom she knows personally. The farm produce varies seasonally, but included squash, apples, onions, garlic, homemade soups, pies, hummus, pesto, and fresh egg. “Dahlias and tomatoes are my specialty,” she commented. Fresh bread and tea cakes come from Fabulous Five Bakery. Several local beekeepers provide honey. Calin herself prepares fresh ground nut butters, preserves, and chutneys. Also on sale are goat milk creams, chemical free and totally natural made by hand by a farmer in Pennsylvania, vegan soaps and creams, lip balms, local heirloom botanicals teas, foot creams, lavender air sprays, and candles and farm raised grass fed meat and chicken. “All the paper we use in labeling is recycled, and I used milk to glue them on the jars,” she explained. The jars are Ball, all American made. Another feature going with the store’s theme is returnable glass jars.

A shop for four seasons STORY AND PHOTOS BY FRANK RIZZO

T

he chill of winter, the ice and snow, keep the mind far from thoughts of lawns and gardens, but maybe it’s not a bad idea to start thinking of new tools it will take to tackle outdoor jobs come next spring. In the meantime, there is the threat of ever present snow and the possibility of losing power to your house. And of course, it’s the holiday season. Maybe someone on your wish list needs a chainsaw, or a weed whacker, or a log splitter. For these and much more, John Eschenberg’s in Callicoon is the place for all seasons for a wide variety of power equipment. Started by the late John Eschenberg in 1947, it is now run by his son Dennis and has been providing high quality outdoor tools in the western end of the county for decades. Dennis is the genial guide through the two showrooms filled a “kid-in-acandy-store” worth of new shiny tools. The shop is an authorized dealer for such highly regarded products as Husqvarna, Stihl and Simplicity. Here one will find gas-powered generators, ride-on mowers, shredders and chippers and backpack blowers. Dennis has been working full time at his father’s shop since 1967, and started helping out as a pre-teen in 1959. “There were no working papers then,” he said with a laugh. “My pay was getting free room and board at

home.” Service is the other component of a quality shop. Dennis, along with technicians Raymond Olsen (27 years) and Daniel Sattler (“he’s been with us on and off since he was a kid”) need to keep up with ever evolving technology and have to take online or in-class courses to maintain their certification. Dennis has seen a lot of changes during his decades in the business. “Computers in a chainsaw? I have to laugh. Whoever would have thought it?” he chuckled. For info call 887-5350.

One of the two showrooms at John Eschenberg, Inc. is filled with a plethora and miscellany of outdoor equipment.
