A special delight during the holidays STORY AND PHOTOS BY DAN HUST

here’s no shortage of treats inside DeFilippis Italian Bakery and Café! The Broadway, Monticello mainstay has been giving the gift of good food for 27 years, and now it’s even better. “The café just took off,” says Carmela Foglia, who with co-owner Angelo Foglia opened the breakfast/lunch destination this past August. “People have been very receptive. They love the soups, quiches and lunch specials.” This time of year, DeFilippis is filled with Christmas cookies, decorated doughnuts and holidaythemed cakes. You can even find fresh, locally-created flower baskets! “After the holidays, we want to start doing cupcake classes for kids and sip ‘n paint classes for adults,” Carmela explains. Don’t forget that DeFilippis is also the premier regional bakery (now serving NY-style water bagels, too), with its breads, rolls and pastries offered not just in its own store but in shops spanning the Hudson, Delaware and Susquehanna river valleys. And with off-premises catering, Carmela and

They work for us now,” Carmela points out. “We did the expansion for them.” So you can be certain DeFilippis will be ready to meet your needs – and appetite – for many more years. over at Bashakill Vineyards, as Deninno relates: “We are only open three more Saturdays – the last Saturday being December 27 – but we offer live music every Saturday and will have some holiday wine sales as well.” And Deninno has a holiday drink in mind for his customers as well: “We have a holiday mulled wine made from our Blue Heron wine, cinnamon sticks, cloves, organic sugar and a pinch of ginger then served warm,” he affirmed. “We also just got our Farm brewery license and released our first beer for sale by the glass dubbed Opossum Porter.” And you don’t have to travel all the way to Wurtsboro to get a taste of Bashakill Vineyards, because as Deninno says, “We can ship wine, and we also have it in some local restaurants. Still, 90 percent of our wine is sold direct out of our tasting room, of course.” And, Deninno continued, “Patrons are welcome to bring food to our establishment, drink on premises and walk our around our vineyard.”

Eminence Road Farm Winery

The motto of Eminence Road Farm Winery is “Bottled Alive!” According to its website the winery “makes small lots of dry table wine in a barn on using vinifera grapes from sustainably managed Finger Lakes vineyards. All wine is fermented by naturally occurring yeasts and bottled by hand, unfined and unfiltered with the only addition being a minimal amount of sulfite for stability.” Just over the Sullivan County border in Delaware County, the winery is is operated by Jennifer Clark and Andrew Scott and is open for tastings and sales by appointment. But the website warns: “Dear reader, before driving all the way out here please understand that we are a small, mom and pop operation with an emphasis on quality wine production over tourism. Our tasting room experience is rustic – on a good day (no restrooms, no gift shop, etc.) – and our location is remote but we are

and sisters when needed. Both of our families are supportive.” For the holidays, noted Facquet, “we are doing a 10 percent off any tasting room hats, clothing or cocktail mixes. We are also doing case discounts and as always a Veterans discount.” The Distillery, which has a tasting and gift shop, is open seven days a week from 11 a.m.–5 p.m. According to Facquet, “Our bourbon is only available at the Distillery for now. But you can ask your local store for the Gin and the Vodka. The Distillery even has a cocktail recommendation for the holiday season. Dubbed “The Wintery Mix,” this drink contains 2 oz Bootlegger 21 NY Vodka, a ¼ oz Ginger Liqueur, a ½ oz fresh lime juice, a ½ oz fig honey syrup, a ½ tsp of apple sauce, a Splash cranberry juice and 15 dried cranberries, for the perfect cold weather drink. For a list of Bootlegger 21 New York Vodka distributors, more information on Prohibition Distillery and its tours and tastings, or to read the blog go to www.prohibitiondistiller y.com, www.facebook.com/prohibitiondistillery or call 607-498-4511. pharmacy. With everything from stuffed animals to sun catchers, a dedicated confectionary truffle station, a large Yankee Candle selection, candy, toys and whole lot more, the Family Drug Store’s holiday gift selection must truly be seen to be believed. Besides its wide array of gift ideas, the Family Drug Store has a long history for having one of the best holiday store-window displays in the area. “We have continued to decorate the storefront windows for holidays as it had been done while Mr. Motl owned the store,” explained Cohen. “We try and add to or change things up and keep current with decorations each season.” According to Cohen, his wife Carla, who helps out at the pharmacy from time to time, is a big part of that massive selection of gift ideas. Cohen related, “She has a big hand in the purchasing of much of the giftware we

carry.” There’s even a gift wrapping station, for the customer’s convenience. Last summer Family Drug experienced an extensive facelift. “In May of 2013 we began a total store renovation” said Cohen. “It was time to update and improve the looks and dynamics of the store.” The renovation was capped in September of 2013 with the completion of the store’s new facade. And Cohen is thankful to his many customers this holiday season: “Through the years, people have come and gone through the many challenges of this industry and profession,” he offered. “I am thankful to have been a service to them all. I wish to thank all of my customers/patients, past and present, for their continued support of the local independent business that I have and I look forward to continuing to be of service to the people of

Sullivan County for years to come... Happy Holidays to one and all!” The Family Drug Store is located at 524 Broadway in Monticello. Hours of operation are 8 a.m.–7 p.m. Monday through Friday, Saturday from 8 a.m.–2 p.m. and 9 p.m.–1

o doubt there are countless animal lovers in the area, and there’s never been a larger selection of pet-centric Sullivan County businesses to satisfy your pet of choice’s holiday gift needs. Below we profile a few of these petfriendly businesses:

N

Sudsy Paws Pet Groomer: Nicole Irwin, owner/operator of Sudsy Paws, opened her first shop in Ellenville back in 1997, soon after graduating from Manhattan’s New

York School of Dog Grooming in 1996. Irwin opened her Sullivan Street, Wurtsboro location in 2004. Besides pampering your dog or cat with a grooming appointment, Irwin says, “We have many gift items for pets and their owners alike. We have several Christmas themed gift items for 50 percent off, including picture frames, ornaments, candle toppers and more.” Added Irwin, “We are currently also having a 10 percent off special on pet ID tags which are engraved onsite.

GOOD FOOD, GOOD SERVICE, GOOD TIMES!

These pet treats, sold right now at Sudsy Paws in Wurtsboro, are made with "human ingredients," according to owner/operator Nicole Irwin. "You can even eat them, though they do taste a bit stale to humans.”

Sudsy Paws in Wurtsboro carries a wide variety of gifts for the pet lover in your life, including these pet-themed car magnets.

Dog-Gone-It Pet Groomers: Dog-Gone-It in Liberty is owned and operated by mother and daughter team, M.J. and Amanda Weiss, and first opened up for business in August 2012. “We are indeed a team,” explained Amanda Weiss. “My mother, M.J. Weiss, is my full-time grooming assistant. She is my bather, brusher and

blow-dryer and she also helps our customers and assists me during the grooming process. I am the full-time groomer and primary owner at DogGone-It... I make appointments, answer phones, help customers with questions they may have and everything else. Both of us share much of the same responsibilities, such as setting up our stations in the morning and evening, clean-up the floors and making sure your pet is treated with utmost respect. Carrie LaJoie is my grooming assistant on Saturdays... she bathes animals and assists me during grooming along with my mom. We make a fantastic team and we enjoy each other’s company, but best of all, we all love animals!” Citing her specials for this latest of holiday shopping seasons, Weiss says you can “Save $1 off a matching leash and collar, or $1 off any flavor of Greenies for cats,” adding, “We also have holiday gift baskets that are loaded with goodies like pet food, toys and treats. You can choose between dogs and cats and just $10 buys a great gift. Or you can dress your pet for less, as we carry sweaters starting at $10, along with holiday bow-ties and ruffles that make a great statement.” Bow-ties start at $1, while ruffles will run you $1.50. And, continued Weiss, “Don't forget Dog-Gone-It is accepting cash donations for Dogs for the Deaf, an organization designed to train dogs for the deaf and blind to assist them in their

We have over 40 styles, with prices ranging from $6.50–$11.99. Pet ID tags are extremely important, as they are the fastest way for your pet to be returned to you if lost… even more so during the busy holiday season with guests coming and leaving your home, as well as deliveries... doors are open more and pets may slip out.” And a portion of your purchase at Sudsy Paws this holiday season will even go to an amazing cause. According to Irwin, “In honor of my dear friend Jeannie Devoe, who passed away in September from cancer, I am donating 10 percent of all store sales for the month of December to the Sullivan County SPCA. “Jeannie devoted her life to animal rescue,” Irwin added. It’s soap free, which means it does not lather and will not disturb spoton treatments like Frontline or Advantage. The deep cleaning does an amazing job removing dirt, oil and sand from your pet’s coat... come see for yourself.” And, if you’re looking for a toy that is strong, durable, cleans teeth and is washable, Weiss says, “Our handmade braided rope toys are perfect for you, and you can add Tropi Clean dental floss spray to these toys for cleaner teeth.” “We also groom cats and offer a variety of services for cats such as

fter decades spent in high end retail for such outfits as Marshall Field and Bonwit Teller, and living in Chicago, Washington and NYC, Miriam Stone retired to a country home in Lew Beach she shares with husband Sandy, himself a former clothing wholesaler. While Sandy started a real estate business (and took advantage of the famous trout waters) in the Roscoe area, Miriam opened The Fisherman’s Wife, an antique shop that tranformed itself over the years into a general home furnishings/gift store she rechristened Annie’s Place, in honor of her late cocker spaniel. “It’s definitely a place where cus-

Puppet show comes to CAS boy, he purchased from ‘Snowflake’ Bentley three snowflake photos,” said performer Sarah Frechette. “My grandfather’s pride in his photos inspired my idea for this show. At the heart of it, it is a love letter from me to my late grandfather.” “The Snowflake Man” was awarded a 2011 UNIMA Citation of Excellence – the highest honor in puppetry. This show is sponsored in part by a Creation Grant from the Vermont Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Sarah Frechette is an artist, puppeteer and founder of PUPPETKABOB, a puppet company that has toured nationally. he Catskill Art Society will present “The Snowflake Man,” an original puppet show by Sarah Frechette of PUPPETKABOB, at the CAS Arts Center at 48 Main Street, Livingston Manor on Saturday, December 20 from 2-3 p.m. “The Snowflake Man” is a beautiful trunk show of Czech-style marionettes and props backed by a pop-up book of watercolor paintings telling the story of "Snowflake" Bentley. This utterly unique show combines art with history and science through live story-telling. This story was inspired by Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley, a self-educated farmer and scientist who in 1885 attracted world attention by adapting a bellows camera to a compound microscope – he became the first person to capture the image of a single snow crystal. “When my grandfather was a young

Favorite Holiday recipes to Savour

• 3/4 ounce Raspberry flavored Vodka • 3/4 ounce Peppermint Schnapps • 3/4 ounce White Crème De Coco • 1/4 ounce grenadine • Half and Half • Seltzer water The Candy Cane is a fun holiday cocktail that is simple, sweet, and holds many of our favorite flavors of the season. The mix is interesting, beginning with a base of Raspberry Vodka on top of which peppermint and chocolate are piled. We cannot forget the sweet grenadine or the cream, which round out the unique layers quite wonderfully. If you like, skip the splash of soda, though you will find it adds a nice little sparkle and brings a lightness to what can be a rather heavy drink. 1. Pour the vodka, peppermint schnapps, white creme de cacao, and grenadine into a cocktail shaker with ice. 2. Shake Well. 3. Shake into a cocktail or Martini glass rimmed with crushed peppermint candy. 4. Fill with half and half. 5. Top with a splash of soda water.
