Fallsburg graduates 65 STORY AND PHOTOS BY ELI RUIZ

SOUTH FALLSBURG — Sixty-five seniors graduated from Fallsburg High School Sunday afternoon, and much like the school’s mascot, the comet, will continue to blaze. Fallsburg High School Principal Michael Williams provided the ceremony’s opening remarks, relating that the graduating class was the “first class of students I have taken from seventh grade through twelfth grade as principal in this building ... so they will always have a special place in my heart. “You’re going to get more education and you’re going to get more life experience, but only you will determine the next step in your journey,” continued Williams. Offering food as a metaphor for the occasion, Williams added, “Life is like a spice. It can be benign like salt or oregano, or it can be hot and spicy like a habanero [pepper]... While the habanero might burn and you might cry a little, you’ll keep coming back for more. I recommend the habanero...” Williams then went on to thank the Fallsburg Class of 2014 for, as he said, “You’ve

There may be family or financial difficulties, the death of someone close or the loss of a friend. The fact that you sit on this stage with me today shows that you’ve been able to persevere over whatever life has thrown at you thus far.” Valedictorian Rafael Olan Jr. talked about his vision upon entering Fallsburg High School to graduate at the top of his class: “The infinite projects, essays, tests and homeworks weren’t simply for the achievement and cliché that comes with the status of ‘scholar,’ ” he explained. “Rather, I completed

these tasks to create a window of opportunity for myself to walk away the very first male in my family to graduate high school.” And where Principal Williams chose food as a metaphor, Olan opted for war as his: “We are like soldiers, in that we are headed for an assault for which we’ve been armed to secure our future,” he said. “Not in the grand scale of war, but nonethe-less the battle of our lives. We are warriors here today because we withstood adversity, but are we prepared for the uncertainty of the university? “High school has been our basic training as we depart into the real world,” continued Olan. “Life will come at us armed with hard times and tough choices. Our mind is the weapon, our voice the ammunition and we’ve spent our entire lives arming our most important weapon, our minds, for warfare.” Bilingual, Olan would address and thank his family from the stage in Spanish. After Senior Class Counselor Joe Levner handed out a

raft of awards, it was class of 2014 President Samantha Wiles’ turn to speak, and she took the opportunity to thank teachers, administrators and even the School Board, because, as she said, “We wouldn’t be experiencing this amazing sense of accomplishment and satisfaction today if it wasn’t for the love and dedication of all of you.” Fallsburg Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Ivan Katz, then inducted just the second ever member of the Fallsburg Hall of Fame, Mr. Joseph LaRuffa. After three honorable years of service with the U.S. Army during the second World War, LaRuffa would go on to study music education, garnering degrees from both New York University (NYU) and Columbia University. LaRuffa would then, in 1954, begin a 30-year career as a music teacher and band director at Fallsburg High School. “Joseph LaRuffa brought local, state and national recognition to this school district via his high school band,” offered Katz.

ELDRED — It was with mixed emotions that Eldred Class of ’14 graduates looked toward the future. Many of the graduates the Democrat spoke to seemed sad leaving their friends and school behind, while others were simply thrilled that school was finally over, feeling it was time to move to the next stage of their lives. Superintendent Robert Dufour also talked about the importance of time, quoting Ecclesiastes’ “There’s a time for every purpose under heaven” and J.R. R. Tolkien’s Gandalf from “Fellowship of the Rings”: “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us. Time defines our lives… There’s no time like the present.” After the Key Notes singers performed, and congratulatory speeches and awards to teachers, assistants, and honorees were made, jubilant new graduates were free to go their own way to their

families and friends, who’d gathered en mass on the outside lawn specially set up for the day. Before the ceremonies, the graduates-to-be spoke of their future plans and aspirations. Jacob Willoughby said, “The feeling of this graduation is bittersweet. It’s nice, but it’s also sad to see all the people you’re graduating with – you won’t see them very much, most of them you won’t see at all afterwards. But that’s just how life is. You’ve just got to move on with your life.” Jacob has already joined the military. Christian D’Angelo said he wants to become an oral surgeon. “I’m going to Geneseo to study biology with the intention of going to medical school,” he said, and was looking forward to the future, while at the same time being sad at leaving friends behind. Jared DeLeon has his future, or at least his career mapped out. “I’m going to be a mechanical engineer,” he said with confidence, while

Hannah Bisland, left, and Samantha Banghart take a moment to share with Alyssa Donnelly whose cap states the obvious.

also seeming sad at leaving the school and friends behind. Tim Worzel had a real statement for the world: “It’s definitely exciting to graduate, to see all these years of hard work coming to an end. We’re just starting a new chapter in our lives. I’m happy I got to spend time with friends throughout these couple of years, and I’m looking forward to the future. I’m going to SUNY College at Brockport to study sports management.” Twins Zoe and Hannah Zuckerman wore big smiles and seemed confident the world was just opening up for them. Hannah explained, “I think there’s not much more we can do here, and I think change is good for us.” Both are accomplished musicians, and both are going to study music, although in different places. Hannah’s going to Montclair State University in New Jersey to major in music education, and Zoe’s going to Queens University of Charlotte, North Carolina to major in music therapy. “I’m just excited to be finally done here. It’s time to move on. I’m going to Sullivan first and then to New York City to study costume design for theater,” said Brandon Suppa. “I’m excited to go!” Taylor Frank is ambitious. “I want to own my own restaurant,” he said. He’s starting with the Lincoln Tech in Connecticut to study Culinary Arts. “I’m happy that school’s over,” he added with a smile. Michael Stegmann put it, perhaps, most simply and eloquently, “I’m happy to graduate!”

LIVINGSTON MANOR –– Graduates of Livingston Manor know that the journey is only just beginning after high school. The traditional “Pomp and Circumstance” played to beaming smiles as the 41 graduates made their way past family, friends and the Livingston Manor community to take their place on the dais. The focus on the graduating class extended to its members’ maturity and preparedness to step into the real world. Livingston Manor Principal Sandra Johnson’s opening remarks included a reflection on the senior class’s last day of school, where they “unwillingly rolled their entire school year into one day.” The class had decorated the outside sidewalk with chalk reminiscent of Kindergarten depicting “Seniors

2014!” and organized an entire day’s celebration including food in the senior lounge illustrating their maturity- not one senior missed a class that day and only celebrated during their free time. Salutatorian Brandon Sparkman reminded his classmates of high school’s importance, “High school taught us to learn. Nobody has enjoyed taking notes or studying while in high school. At least nobody I know. But it is so helpful later in life...Learning to learn is a necessity.” Sparkman also credited band director Daniel Smith with a piece of advice that stuck, “Graduating high school is not a huge change but simply a new beginning.” Valedictorian Farrah Mills’ focus was on her class’s diversity and uniqueness, “Based on our diverse personal talents I know we’ll grow up to do great things. Do what you want. As clichéd as it sounds, life’s too short to Members of the LMCS class of 2014 toss off their caps as they start a new chapter of their lives. be unhappy.” Guest speaker Karl Bressler, a 1997 LMCS graduate, advised students to take chances and make decisions that may be hard to make. Bressler likened life’s choices to those in the old Choose Your Own Adventure books. “They call it graduation, but they also call it commencement,” Bressler said, “I like commencement better. The fact is the exciting

stuff is just beginning. This is not an author’s story, this is the start of your own choose your own adventure. So take this time to make memories, take pictures and have a party. And after that go out there and slay that dragon.” “Enjoy the journey,” Superintendent Deborah Fox said to the class, “It has been an honor to be your superintendent and I hope you have the time of your life.”

Valedictorian Farrah Mills summed up her hopes for her classmates with an F. Scott Fitzgerald quote, “I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again.”

David Clark used decorations from the Senior Class’ last day of school celebration to jazz up his mortarboard. Congratulations & Best Wishes to Dallas Diescher!!

LIBERTY — Liberty High School’s 117th commencement exercise on Saturday may just have been its biggest yet, with hundreds of supportive family, friends, staff and administrators packing the school’s Robert Van Slyke Gymnasium to see the morning’s 91 graduating

seniors off to the next step in their lives, sharing in celebration of one of life’s most important milestones. Graduates William Killian and Gwendaline Nieves kicked off the hours-long ceremony with a moving rendition of the Star Spangled Banner; the perfect segue for the Alma Mater led by the senior chorus and symphony orchestra.

Valedictorian Katarina Manzi poses after delivering her valedictory.

Alyssa Piatek, daughter of Liberty alum Nick Piatek, leads the procession of 91 Liberty grads. Piatek is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Art Honor Society, and graduated Saturday with a New York State Advanced Regents Diploma. Nery Campos shows off his unique mortarboard as he delivers the welcome address. Nery received a New York State Advanced Regents Diploma with honors. New York State advanced regents diploma recipient and varsity soccer standout Nery Campos welcomed the large crowd, after which the earlier morning’s two Liberty Wall of Fame inductees and guest speakers, Joseph Rubin, Class of 1956; and Dr. Steven J. Schiff, Class of 1974, hit the stage. Schiff talked about the experience of growing up in a small town and its many

virtues, though, he did admit, “No one I’ve ever met has ever heard of Liberty,” after which he stressed the importance that the day’s graduates “find something you are good at and that you will enjoy every day . . . You should pursue what you want to do and not what others want you to do,” he added. Valedictorian Katarina Manzi spoke of the financial

hardships she and her family encountered when she was a child, affirming, “However, none of the hardships at home would deter me from reaching my goals of achieving academic success... in fact it made me more determined.” “Knowledge and education are the keys to improving yourself,” she continued, then warning, “It will take determination, and most of all,

it will not be easy, but no matter the hardships you face, don’t give up.” But perhaps the day’s significance was framed best by Liberty Middle/High School Principal Jack Strassman, who reminded the day’s honorees, “Graduation is the beginning, not the end. Today is when you leave behind childhood and begin your journey into adulthood... so be proud of your accomplishments and always show gratitude to those who supported you.”

Honesdale graduates 211 STORY AND PHOTOS BY ANYA TIKKA

HONESDALE, PA — The gymnasium hosting the formal, solemn commencement ceremony at Honesdale High School was packed with family members, friends, and well wishers. Many, judging by the collection of car plates lining up the parking lots surrounding the school, came from out of state. High School Principal Diane Scarfalloto reminded those present that, although many had been to the gym for various sports events, “commencement… evolved from nearly a thousand years of history and traditions. While it is a day of joy and celebration, the ceremony it-

self requires dignity and quiet respect. We are aware that many of you have attended sporting events in this place when cheering and whistles were appropriate and acceptable behavior. However, noise making and other disruptive behavior is unacceptable during Honesdale High School commencements.” Interspersed by both instrumental and vocal music performed by the students, speakers included Class President Markos Tetonis, Salutatorian Rachel Fritz and Valedictorian Keith Bates, as well as District Superintendent Gregory Frigoletto. In his speech Frigoletto said, “We are very proud of this group of students. It is without reservation that we

Valedictorian Keith Bates delivers his speech. Listening on the podium are, front, Salutatorian Rachel Fritz, left, and Markos Tetonis. Behind them are, from left, Erin O’Neill, Jennifer Carey, and John Russo.

feel strongly that they will be successful and prosperous for not only themselves, but also to ensure prosperity for future generations.” Valedictorian Keith Bates reminded his fellow students about the hard work, and many challenges the class already has faced to bring them to the point where they are. Keith is a resident of Honesdale, and the son of Michael and Karen Bates. He plans to go to Penn State to study Petroleum & Natural Gas Engineering. Among his many accomplishments, honors and awards are National Honor Society Member; Scholar of the Year; Scholastic Bowl; Science Olympiad; Ernest W. Lemnitzer Memorial Schol-

arship; Penn State Alumni Association Scholarship; and Student Council Academic Award for Social Studies. Class Salutatorian Rachel Olivia Fritz is also from Honesdale, the daughter of Randall and Amy Bidwell. She’s distinguished herself by receiving the following: Academic Excellence Award; American Mathematics Contest; Honesdale Cross Country Team – Captain; Interact Club; Interstellar Club; Marywood Math Contest; National Honor Society Member; Student Council Member & Officer; varsity tennis and track and Field Team; Anna R. and Walter Schoyer Scholarship; Wayne County Community Foundation - Drs. Philip and Rosita

Liu Scholarship; and Honesdale Women’s Club Scholarship. She’s going to Lycoming College to study Biology & Chemistry Pre-Med. Principal Scarfalloto’s observations about the Class of 2014: “This graduating class is a very hardworking, polite, respectful group of young men and women. They were easy to work with, followed directions well and finished as strong as any group we have had. They were an absolute pleasure to work with and will be missed.”

At left, Lindsay Nordenhold, in wheelchair, shows off her diploma, and was helped along by Cosmina Jones.

Hancock graduates 28 STORY AND PHOTOS BY FRANK RIZZO

HANCOCK —Twenty-eight students received their diplomas at Hancock High School’s 126th commencement exercises last Friday. It was one of the smaller contingents in the school’s history; just four years ago, 56 graduated. But a small school and community have their virtues. “It’s a great community,” said Ryan Smith, heading to Hudson Valley CC to play baseball and study Physical Education. Of the school, he said: “I really liked the sports and had great teachers.” Lea Newman will be attending Onondaga Community College this fall and plans to major in Exercise Science. Her aspiration: “I want to be an athletic trainer, maybe on the USA softball team!” Asked if she would come back to Hancock in her old age, she unhesitatingly replied, “Yes. I know a lot of people and there’s a lot of great places to fish.” “It’s a great class. Small but tight knit,” said second-year Principal Brenton Taylor. “It was a great group of kids to work with. I call it a small

class with lasting impact.” In his Valedictory, “Just the Start,” Andrew Doerr touched on the class size, noting, “I am so blessed to have attended a small school because my learning was always number one to all of my teachers, because I was a person with a name and not just a face in the crowd. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my teachers for guiding me through school with intelligence, insight, kindness and caring.” Doerr, who will begin his education at Broome County CC, studying accounting, looked back on his experiences as imparting “what school is all about – learning.… Learning is the essence of what I will take with me, each of us will take with us, as we leave here.” He concluded, “When it seems difficult, just keep pushing, stay determined and keep your eyes on the goal… just keep maturing your dreams and advancing toward the future. The sense of community permeates Hancock’s graduation. When first-year band director Cristina Dinella had to be away at a family function, the 2013 Valedictorian Mark White stepped in to con-

duct the ensemble. A music major at SUNY Potsdam, White was also on hand to accept the Charles L. Read Foundation Scholarship (along with 2013 Salutatorian Jeanette Welch, who is studying theology at Penn View Bible Institute). One of the more generous scholarships, it provides $4,000 per year for four years. The 2014 recipients were Brooke Sherbourne, who plans to study environmental science at SUNY Brockport and Meghan Smith, who plans to major in education at SUNY Oswego. Altogether, Taylor said, the funds disbursed by the Hancock Community Education Foundation totaled $80,800 to 2014 and former graduates. Since 2000, the graduation has awarded over $685,000. Among the three new scholarships handed out was the Rob Potter Memorial Scholarship, named after the 1991 alumnus and former Sullivan County Democrat sports editor. It went to Elisha Chandler, a student who met the criteria of combining “a love of sports and a passion for writing.” Meghan Smith titled her salutatory “Turning the Page” and noted that “we… begin the next chapter of

our lives but not fully closing the one we have already finished.… We must take what we have learned at Hancock and apply it to this new chapter. Each of us should think of our freshman self and see how far we have come since that first day of high school. “We as individuals must not only better ourselves but better the world,” she added. The night, filled with memories and nostalgia and also dreams and hopes for the future, seemed to fulfill the class motto: “Today is the tomorrow we waited for yesterday.”

Elisha Chandler accepts his diploma from Board of Education President Terry Whitt. Elisha took home several awards, including being named the winner of the first Rob Potter Memorial Scholarship. Named after the late sports editor of the Sullivan County Democrat and a 1991 Hancock HS alumnus, it is given to “a student who has a love of sports and a passion for writing.”

David Shaffer looks down at a family member who’s asked him to hold the pose after receiving his diploma from Board of Education President Terry Whitt.

Paul Mannino (Class of 2027!) checks out the mortarboard of newly minted grad Darren Burrows. Paul was on hand for his sister Stephanie’s graduation.

Sullivan West graduates 96 STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEANNE SAGER

LAKE HUNTINGTON — When Dr. Nancy Hackett thinks of the Class of 2014, one phrase comes to mind. “Paying it forward.” It’s not “about spending money or spending your parents’ money,” the Sullivan West superintendent told the crowd at this year’s graduation. For the 96 graduates of the district, it has meant being just plain good at helping others – from logging the most hours in the school’s tutoring lab to allowing a Congressman to be a classmate for a day. This year’s seniors haven’t just made a mark on their

school but on their community in their 13 years at Sullivan West. The question posed at Saturday’s ceremony? What will they do next? After all, as Valedictorian Travis Roeder reminded his long-time classmates, “After today, we are no longer students. We are alumni. “Leaving here, that’s a scary thought,” Roeder admitted. But it’s one they’re ready for, Salutatorian Elliott “Joey” Moran assured the crowd of parents, friends, family, and educators gathered in the high school gymnasium. “We’re now ready and eager to go out and make our mark in the world,” he said. Like Roeder, who said

A rite of passage, the traditional tossing of the mortarboards, brings welcome relief to the new Sullivan West alumni.

helping others is why we’re put on this earth, Moran urged his classmates to consider what is most important in life and not to lose sight of it. “The happiest people in life don’t have the best of everything,” he said. “They make the best of everything.” Sullivan West’s graduates have a lot to make something of with three students graduating summa cum laude, 14 magna cum laude and 16 cum laude; with 10 graduates walking off with advanced Regents diplomas with honors, 30 earning advanced Regents diplomas, and four earning Regents diplomas with honors; with thousands of dollars in scholarships; with a high school experience Class President Sarah Strachan called a “gift” to every member of the Class of 2014. BOCES holds Rubin Pollack graduation

MONTICELLO — The Sullivan County BOCES held its annual commencement ceremony on Friday, June 13 at the Rubin Pollack Education Center. Twenty graduates were honored for their educational achievements amongst a crowd of family, friends, and school administrators. The ceremony was opened with remarks from Larry Thomas, District Superintendent. Mr. Thomas spoke about how proud the students and their families should be of the graduates’ accomplishments. Thomas concluded with the statement, “Although you may think that your educational path has ended, it is just the beginning. Use what you have learned over the years to help you decide what you want to do with your future. Thomas Bantin from the Fallsburg Central School was one of the class speakers for the ceremony. He started his speech with a motivational statement to his lower classmates and thanked all of the people whom have helped him over the years and guided him on his path to success. Patrick Boyce from the Eldred Central School was the second class speaker. According to Boyce, “I honestly thought I would never make

it through high school, if it wasn’t for my parents, teachers and classmates I wouldn’t be here right now. To my lower classmates, I know this is hard, but don’t give up. 2014 RUBIN POLLACK EDUCATION CENTER GRADUATES

BOCES helps adults gain their GED

MONTICELLO — The Adult & Continuing Education Program at Sullivan County BOCES held its High School Equivalency Graduation Ceremony on Thursday, May 29 at the St John Street Education Center in Monticello. On this day, they stood proud, ready to face the world with a credential that will open up a world of opportunities. Cruz Herrera, Donna Moody, and Glen Clark were the student speakers for the night. Each told their story and gave gratitude to all of the people who helped them on their journey to reach this life-altering goal. MONTICELLO GRADUATES 179

As everyone lines up for commencement Sunday behind Bethel Woods’ Pavilion, Monticello High School Principal Lori Orestano-James cheers the students she’s watched turn into capable young adults. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DAN HUST

BETHEL — Monticello High School Principal Lori Orestano-James ticked off a list of top acts she’d seen at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. “But what I realized,” she said inside the Pavilion Sunday, “is the best show I will

ever experience on this stage is the graduation of the Monticello Central School Class of 2014!” A roar rose from the crowd of more than 2,000 family and friends of the 179 graduates sitting on that stage – 79 percent of whom are headed to higher education. “What is it that makes this class awesome?” Orestano-

Nearly 200 Monticello seniors wend their way through Bethel Woods’ sunny paths on their long-awaited march to the Pavilion, which hosted Monticello’s graduation ceremony for the first time on Sunday.

Soon-to-be graduates celebrate even before they get on the same stage that’s hosted the likes of Elton John, Bob Dylan and Santana.

James wondered. “It is your drive, your commitment to others, that’s what.” They were exhorted to commit to living, to skydiving and scuba diving, to making a difference. “Seize life and pursue what you believe in,” advised Jonathan Harned, one of three class speakers. “... Explore all the opportunities that life presents you.” “Logic will get you from A to B,” noted Superintendent Daniel Teplesky, quoting Albert Einstein. “But imagination will take you everywhere.” That imagination was already in evidence, from the

Congratulations to our Sullivan County Graduates!

myriad decorated mortarboards to a poem presented by another class speaker, Derrick Wegner. “It was never only about the grades but the quality of friends I made,” recounted Wegner. “... Try harder, go farther, do better. The time to give up is never.” The third class speaker, Megan Owens, credited her teachers with keeping her and her classmates on track. “Without them, we would not be here,” she gratefully offered. “... They watched us grow, gave us words to live by and inspired us to reach our highest potential. ... We can honestly say this was a team

effort.” And the results are impressive, including Lily McCausland, who shared her award-winning Fulton Essay – selected by the district as the best treatise on economics, sociology, American history and/or American government and named after charter board member Albert Fulton. “The concrete line between a ‘woman’s job’ and ‘man’s job’ is becoming more blurred as time goes on,” wrote McCausland in a speech delivered on Sunday. “... One of the most troubling obstacles facing women in title positions (CEO, Presi-

dent, etc.) is that they are making 77 cents to every dollar a man in the same position is making. “... To solve the income gap, and to have leaders be regarded as just leaders, the merit of a person’s achievement and promotion should not be based on whether they wore lipstick or had chest hair doing it. Presidents and CEOs should be appointed because they have the character and intelligence to get the job done. “... And if that doesn’t work,” she concluded, “the 23 cents [difference] should go to the women for doing the same job in four-inch heels.”

Best Wishes to the Class of 2014!

Medals reserved for those graduating cum laude, magna cum laude and summa cum laude await their presentation. Fiftysix graduates earned such honors on Sunday, an impressive amount out of a Class of 2014 that numbered 179. Derrick Wegner shared a poem and received a summa cum laude medal during commencement.

LEFT: Monticello Central School Board President Susan Purcell, left, hands a diploma to brand new graduate Lily McCausland, the Student Council President who impressed the crowd with her “Fulton Essay”: a thoughtful piece, selected by the district in honor of a charter board member, dealing with the pay disparity between men and women in the American workplace.

Superintendent Dan Teplesky, who is retiring this year, finished his speech with his characteristic “have a magnificent Monticello day!”

ROSCOE — When an opinion column in the Boston Globe labeled today’s kids “idle trophy kids,” content to live off their parents for as long as possible, Roscoe Senior Class Vice President William Brosius took umbrage. “I can’t speak for my entire generation,” he told a gymnasium full of friends, teachers and family members at this year’s commencement exercises, “But none of tonight’s graduates fit that description.” Indeed the 17 members of the Roscoe Class of 2014 are an ambitious group. Fourteen completed high school with a Regents diploma or higher. All walked off with so many awards that the list filled the back and front of a sheet of 81⁄2 by 11-inch sheet of paper. The county’s smallest school district helped create a class that Brosius hopes will change the world. “I want us to be known as the generation that was miscategorized,” he said. His classmate Kimberlie Dusseldorp, this year’s salutatorian, is sure her class is the one that can do it. After all, if growing up in a small town defines you, what has defined the Class of 2014 are the roots they

Virginia Gilkeson

were given in Roscoe. Listing some of the drawbacks to small towns, Dusseldorp spoke of being trapped inside comfort zones. But it’s those comfort zones that Class President Ryan Wood called a safe haven for his classmates and Valedictorian Bradley Dreher referred to as “great opportunities and a happy environment.” Both boys offered evidence that Brosius is right – theirs is the class that does not take things for granted, does not expect to have things handed to them. As Dreher told his classmates, “I’m not going to give you a lot of life advice today. I’ll leave that to the older people, people who are wiser than me, people who make more money than me.” It elicited a laugh from the audience, but coming on the heels of Wood’s admission that his classmates, who once thought they knew everything, are now full of questions about what comes next, it was much more than a joke. The Class of 2014 may get a bad rap, but they’re not bad kids. And they’re going to prove it.

Marinella Di Vita, Joseph Schwartz, and Roberto Taurino are ready to graduate.

At right Liam Fogarty presented this year’s class gift to the school – painting of the 52 steps that lead to the locker room.

Tri-Valley graduates 75

Senior Emily DiToro carries her graduation gown into the school early Saturday morning prior to the 10 a.m. graduation service.

Prior to the start of the Tri-Valley graduation ceremony the class of 2014 posed for this outdoor picture. STORY AND PHOTOS BY EDWARD TOWNSEND

GRAHAMSVILLE — Quoting Edward Young and Victor Kiam, Tri-Valley Central School 2014 Salutatorian Hauk Boyes centered his remarks around the quotes of “Procrastination is the thief of time,” and “Procrastination is opportunity’s assassin.” The Salutatorian speech became part of the highlights of the school’s 2014 graduation service held last Saturday morning in which 75 seniors received diplomas in the Bernstein Auditorium. Noting that he had “spent

over six hours looking in search of inspiration for this speech looking for all the different X-Men heroes,” and “the only thing I got out of it was that I should’ve applied to the Charles Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters instead of Cornell.” Boyes said he “wasted six hours doing nothing, six hours that could’ve been spent doing something productive… six hours I will never get back.” He made it clear to this graduation audience that “procrastination does just the same, “and “putting something off until the last minute

Graduate Brittanie Hajek adjusts her graduation cap prior to the 10 a.m. Saturday morning ceremony.

only adds stress and eats away the potential of turning in your best work.” “Every time we push off doing something or wait for the deadline to be closer… it comes back worse, demanding more attention,” Hauk said. Injecting this subject matter into the “Real World” Boyes pointed out that “the “Real World” has its own agenda, its own deadlines and own function time,” and the “Real World won’t wait for you or extend the due date, so be ready.” “It still shocks me that XMen isn’t considered part of the real world but maybe if human evolution stops procrastination, one day it will be,” but “until then it is our responsibility to take advantage of all the time we have,” the class Salutatorian remarked. Boyes concluded his remarks by urging his fellow seniors and the graduation audience to “all agree that we will seize any opportunity that comes our way,” and quoting Paulo Coelho who said, “do something instead

of killing time, because time is killing you.” School graduation Coordinator and chairman of the Spanish Department Brenda G. Sloan honored three graduates who have chosen to serve in the United States Armed Forces. Before introducing the students she noted that “President Abraham Lincoln recognized the importance and value of those who put country before self, who serve willingly and courageously to honor and protect their nation and its citizens.” She asked current military members or veterans to stand “so that we may thank you for your service.” A warm applause greeted those who acknowledged their service to this country. The three Tri-Valley seniors entering military service include Kevin Mandes, who has enlisted in the Army, Steven Vogler also going in the Army and Joshua Winters, who enlisted in the Air Force. Class Valedictorian Alexandria Brooks offered the question, “how am I supposed to sum up everything I learned

throughout all of my school years and turn it into a meaningful speech?”

She noted, “one day it just hit me… I’ll write my speech the only way I know how to,

Following a family tradition at Tri-Valley 2014 Salutatorian Hauk Boyes poses with his grandmother, Mary Lou Boyes who was Salutatorian at Tri-Valley in 1968.

2014 Tri-Valley Salutatorian and Valedictorian Hauk Boyes and Alexandria Brooks.

by writing an English paper so I found my book, “One fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” by Dr. Seuss, read it, analyzed it and typed up a detailed report, using quotes, and there you have it… my graduation speech.” “We, as fish, are sad, glad, or bad because that is how we were raised,” and “we all individually made us who we are today.” She urged graduates, “don’t go through life ignoring those funny things because there’s something funny going on that’s not worth missing.” Noting that “thirteen years ago, most of us entered this school as scared little fish,” but “look at us now, look how many feet us fish have grown on our own.” and “now we have lasting friendships, knowledge, skills and memories… feet that will carry us through life wherever we may

go.” She concluded by saying, “tomorrow we start a new section of our life… seniors, don’t forget to use all the feet you fish have grown over these years such as friends, knowledge and skills.” Class President Ashley Exner remarked that “during the past 13 years, the Class of ‘14 has created many memories, made lasting friendships and received an education that has given us the skills and knowledge to embark on our next adventure. “It is a day to celebrate everything we have accomplished in our little corner of the world,” she added. Quoting Ed Koch, Ashley concluded by saying “the fireworks begin today, each diploma is a lighted match… each one of you is a fuse.”

Secondary School Principal Robert Peters told the graduates, “as you make a new beginning in your life and as you pursue your dreams, remember to take time to help and serve others even if doing so slows you down a little. “As you explore and develop your unique talents, remain humble, realizing that your special abilities are gifts and not to be taken for granted,” he added. Peters adapted a quote from Joanna Fuchs: “May your new path take you where you want to go and also bring you pleasant surprises.” The traditional graduating class gift to the school includes the purchasing of signage for the front of the building that will read, “TriValley Secondary School” and will be installed upon completion of this summer’s construction project. Eleven of Saturday’s graduates completed the portfolio components at a distinguished level. Receiving portfolios and a distinguished certificate were Hawk Boyes, Alexandria Brooks, Samantha Cook, Ashley Exner, Summer Franson, Danielle Graham, Sierra Hennessey, Colleen Jones, Schuyler Kraus, Bryanna Rivas and Sabrena Smith. Hauk Boyes and Alexandria Brooks received Salutatorian and Valedictorian trophies. The graduation concert band directed by Matthew Weyant performed three compositions, “A Hero’s Return,” “Pomp and Circumstance” and “Sousa Spectacular.” The graduation chorus directed by Kevin Giroux sang “The National Anthem” and “Fly Like An Eagle.”
