Simple Gifts available for school music workshops World Culture is a sampling of what lies ahead as Bethel Woods Center for the Arts kicks off a year-long artist residency with Simple Gifts. This partnership is made possible through a grant from Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour and will run throughout the 2013-14 school year. Area schools are invited to participate free of charge in a variety of musical workshops. Simple Gifts will be in Sullivan County for a total of four visits, each consisting of four days. During each visit, Thursdays and Fridays will be dedicated to working with students, while Saturdays and Sundays will involve interactions with community groups and local musicians. Schools have the option of choosing from three different workshops: Meet the Instruments, Educational Assembly, or Learn to Play Spoons all conveniently located in – and available at no cost to – your school. For more information on this and other programs at Bethel Woods contact Director of Educational Initiatives Margaret Hughes at MHughes@BethelWoodsCenter.org or call 5832097.

will be the center of the day, headlined by two talented and diverse ensembles: Simple Gifts, a folk and world music ensemble; and Kofi and Sankofa Drum and Dance Ensemble. Two women plus twelve instruments equals one good time when Simple Gifts takes the stage. Drawing on an impressive variety of ethnic folk styles, this award-winning duo plays everything from lively Irish jigs and down-home American reels to hard-driving Klezmer frailachs and haunting Gypsy melodies, spicing the mix with the distinctive rhythms of Balkan dance music, the lush sounds of Scandinavian twin fiddling, and original compositions written in a traditional style. Visit http://www.simplegiftsmusic .com/bio.html The Kofi and Sankofa Drum and Dance Ensemble returns to the Festival and Bethel Woods for a third season. Since his arrival to the US, Kofi has been teaching art to children as well as adults. The programs he has been involved in range from teaching special needs children to

use clay, potter’s wheels, kilns, and woodworking tools, to elementary, secondary, and university level school programs in the areas of African dance, sculpture, traditional Adinkra hand printing, drumming, drum making, and storytelling. Maxwell Kofi Donkor considers the presentation of the Ghanaian art and culture his mission, bringing the sights and sounds of its history and a way of life around the world. Visit http://bak2roots .com/wordpress/ In addition to the stage performances, both artists will offer interactive workshops focused on their instru-

ments and genres of music. There will also be workshops for children on crafts from around the world as well as a special exhibit of the Bethel Woods Museum Traveling Trunks.

Spend less time doing what you love. Sorry about that. Most people don’t understand. They look at a pile of wood and see a pile of work. You look at a pile of wood and see the result of an honest day’s work. With the E-Classic’s efficient design and operation, it requires up to 70% less wood than other wood-burning appliances. That means your woodpile will last longer. We do apologize for that.

All E-Classic outdoor wood furnaces adapt easily to new or existing heating systems. It’s important that your outdoor furnace and system be properly sized and installed. See your local dealer for more information. 13-0307 2012-ECL01c

‘Diabolical’ Corn Maze will benefit schools

T

STORY AND PHOTO BY KRISTINA SUMFLETH

he corn stalks have grown tall and are ready to challenge anyone who enters the Corn Maze during the Harvest Festival at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. For the second year in a row, the maze was designed by Bethel Woods Education Programs Manager Mark Robinson, who has a knack for devising tricky labyrinths. “The grounds crew has told me my mazes are diabolical,” Mark chuckled. “They get lost while they are cutting it [down after festival season] since it is so confusing.” Mark has been fascinated by puzzles since he was young and jumped at the opportunity to create the maze for the festival. The 200’ x 325’ maze can take anywhere from about 15 to 40 minutes to navigate and includes 10 dead-ends along the way. As the education manager, Robinson visited multiple schools to talk about Bethel Woods’ programs and thought it would be great if the maze could benefit them. Now the proceeds from the corn maze at this year’s Harvest Festival will go toward the school’s PTOs and PTAs, and volunteers from the schools will come to run the maze. “We really wanted to have them come and benefit from us,” stated Robinson. The annual maze has become a tradition of the festival, one that many people look forward to, and hundreds of visitors will attempt to navigate the passages between the corn. Each year local farmers Fred and Bill Michel of Michel Farms donate their time, equipment and corn seed to plant the corn in May. Robinson said, “It is planted differently than usual corn crops in that [the Michels] sow seed in two directions. This gives us a thicker crop to carve the maze out of. The corn is usually ‘knee high by the 4th of July.’ At that point we have decided on a design for the maze and we begin to lay it out. We make the first of three

cuttings at that time. A second cutting is made about two-three weeks later. The final cutting is more of a grooming and is completed just prior to our first Harvest Festival on Labor Day weekend.” The maze is cut and maintained by the Bethel Woods ground crew. Admission for this year’s maze is $2.

Proceeds from the corn maze this year will go to benefit school PTOs and PTAs in the community.

hen Bethel Woods Center for the Arts wanted a new look for its 2012 Harvest Festival, the organization reached out to SUNY Sullivan Graphic Design & Computer Graphics professors Tom Ambrosino and Mark Lawrence. The venture was so successful that in 2013 the college again provided the artistic talent to create the poster. The winning entry was submitted by Ashley Negron of Liberty, one of Ambrosino’s students, and entering her sophomore year this fall. The department has presented this project to their students not only as an excellent classroom exercise, but as a real-world job that most established marketing agencies would jump at the chance to pitch. Over 50 students in the two years joined in the process of conceptualizing and creating materials for the client’s consideration. “There’s nothing like competition to raise the bar,” Ambrosino noted. Operating as a creative team, SUNY Sullivan faculty and students held a meeting with executives from Bethel Woods in order to define the project. Bethel presented its needs and goals,

sharing with the SUNY Sullivan team the mission and vision of the center. Taking the knowledge gained in this meeting, the students began the creative process with Ambrosino and Lawrence functioning as much as art directors than as teachers. “This was very much an ‘agency style’ approach,” explained Ambrosino. “The students worked on this project just as advertising professionals would. And, by handling Bethel Woods as a ‘client,’ the students got the kind of invaluable experience that some industry professionals wait years to get.” This collaboration between the SUNY Sullivan creative team and Bethel Woods culminates in a final meeting during which select students presented their concepts and designs to representatives from Bethel Woods, including Denise Frangipane and Channyn Culligan, and members of the SUNY Sullivan Board of Trustees, including chairman Nick Speranza. Indeed, Bethel Woods has expressed its interest in continuing this project as an ongoing collaboration between their organization and the college. All members of the creative team involved with

the campaign have received letters of gratitude from Bethel Woods CEO Darlene Fedun. The Harvest Festival reflects Bethel Woods’ commitment to community, and this partnership with SUNY Sullivan is further evidence of that. Community is, as Bethel Woods has stated, “central to the core values and mission of Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. The Harvest Festival is supported by the Gerry Foundation as well as other sponsors (including SUNY Sullivan) who share a commitment to community and regional economic development.

n the spring of 2013, SUNY Sullivan received a grant from Sullivan Renaissance to develop an experimental hop garden on its 400-plus acre campus. With the microbrew industry boom taking place in the Hudson Valley and Catskills, many local breweries have expressed interest in utilizing local hops for their products. This, along with the support of local and state legislators, has encouraged hops producers statewide to reintroduce this once

Sullivan County. Now, SUNY Sullivan hopes to play an integral role in the resurgence of hop farming in the area. The college garden was planted in April, and the initial 30 plants included native varieties of hops: Cascade, Willamette, and Centennial. The first sprouts showed up less than a week after planting and have been flourishing ever since. The productivity and quality of the different varieties is tracked, in part, through student projects. The garden, which also includes a backup plot, is tended to by SUNY Sullivan students, faculty, and staff. The hops project grew from the college’s Appreciative Inquiry process and has been encouraged by interest from community members and people within the local microbrew industry. The garden will help local farmers and brewers better understand the future potential for hop farming in Sullivan County. In response to the strong public interest around this project, the college has begun exploring potential educational opportunities for community members interested in the craft brewing industry. As of August 2013, the hops have con-
