Sprout Dental expands pediatric dental care HONESDALE, PA — New York State families won’t have to travel as far to find quality pediatric dental care now that Sprout Dental in Honesdale has reached agreements with New York State insurance providers including Dentaquest NY, Empire, Fidelis, and GHI. Dr. Kady S c h l o e s s e r, pediatric dentist and owner at Sprout Dental said, “It’s not easy finding childcentric, dental care in our neck of the woods, whether those woods are in Pennsylvania or New York. We have New York families already coming to see us, and others wanting to, but insurance has always been a concern. Now, for many families, it doesn’t have to be.” Sprout Dental treats patients from one year of age through their

teenage years. The practice’s new partnerships will help provide treatment for the large number of underserved families in rural Sullivan and Delaware counties whose best, and closest, opportunity for care was generally across s t a t e lines. “I’m just glad we can be here for all the New York families that need us. By seeing patients early and often, we can educate children and parents on good nutrition and hygiene habits, and provide the essential care to keep these smiles, these kids, and these communities as healthy as possible,” said Dr. Kady. Sprout Dental is a pediatric dental practice located at 177 Sunrise Avenue in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, that is owned and managed by Dr. Kady Schloesser. The practice cares for children as young as one year old through their teenage years and provides education, general hygiene and restorations in Honesdale and at the Scranton Regional Surgicenter. 570-2530358; fax 570-352-3395, email: smile@sproutdental.com, website: sproutdental.com

Dr. Spina follows father’s chiropractic footsteps STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARGARET BRUETSCH LIBERTY — Dr. Mark Spina, a chiropractor of 30 years, shares the same office building that his father also used. Located at 21 Mill Street, Liberty, it is now home to Advanced Health & Medical and offers other services including pain relief and rehabilitation, evaluations, physical therapy, chiropractic care and nerve testing. Advanced is made up of various health care professionals including Medical Director Dr. Avi Davachi, MD, Dr. Orsuville Cabatu, MD (physiatrist), Michelle Guanzon (physical therapist) and Dr. Spina. Call 292-8810 or fax 295-9156. Dr. Spina recently sat down with the Democrat for a Q&A. Q: Where did you go to school? A: I went to school at Life Chiropractic College in Atlanta, Georgia. Q: Why did you choose to be a chiropractor? A: My dad is a chiropractor and I

saw that he helped a lot of people. And I grew up with the viewpoint of the body should be healthy and no medications and things like that. So I sort of wanted to follow in his footsteps. Q: What does it offer that regular medicine might not? A: It’s like a hands-on approach to work on balancing the nerve system, and that nerve system controls the different parts of the body. The nerve system is like the communication system of the body, and the nerves are the wires that communicate and do the communication. And what chiropractors do is try to realign the spine so that that proper communication can take place and a body will normally heal and function properly. Q: Do you feel chiropractic has been accepted within wider medical community? A: For the most part yes.… it has a little bit to go but it’s been more and more accepted. Dr. Mark Spina became a chiropractor hoping to follow in his father’s footsteps and has been doing so for 30 years.

Learn about hereditary cancer risk testing MIDDLETOWN — Middletown Medical conducted its first Community Seminar on Hereditary Cancer Risk Testing last month a full house in Chester, and the presentation was met with much success. Thanks to Dr. Jennifer Reich, a pioneer in the field, those in attendance were treated to a slew of hugely important information of this topic. “The response from this seminar has been overwhelming, and we’re so pleased to provide such invaluable education to the community,” said Lori Marl, Operations Director.

About the risk testing A short survey is available at www.middletownmedical.com/cancer-quiz to learn if you may be at risk. Complete information on the testing is available at www.middletownmedical.com/hereditary-cancer-risk-testing. For more information, or to schedule an evaluation, simply call 342-4774.

Hereditary Cancer Risk Testing offers people with a family or personal history of breast, ovarian, colon and uterine cancers peace of mind, as mutations or variations in genes passed from parent to child can drastically raise the

risk of cancer (in some cases 100 percent) – and knowing if you’re at risk allows you to take action to reduce this risk in advance. In fact, up to 10 percent of cancers are due to factors that are passed from one generation to the next. Dr. Reich practices Internal Medicine in Middletown Medical’s Middletown and Chester locations, and has long been a favorite of patients. In 2008 and 2010 to 2013, she won the Patient’s Choice Award, along with the Compassionate Doctor’s Award from 2010-13. She is a graduate of the University of Florida’s College

of Medicine, and is Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). Middletown Medical is a multi-specialty physicians’ group dedicated to providing patients with top quality, comprehensive care in a warm and caring environment. Opened in 1984, Middletown Medical now includes nine locations throughout Orange and Sullivan counties (Middletown, Bloomingburg, Chester, Ellenville, Liberty, Monticello, Port Jervis, Warwick and Wurtsboro), including Immediate Medical Care (Urgent Care walk-in services) at the Middletown, Chester and Ellenville locations. Open seven days a week with no appointment necessary, please visit www.MiddletownMedical.com for more information, or call 342-4774.

cited alarming statistics about the state of health care in US. “Life expectancy is below Australia, Japan, and Great Britain. We are number 50 in the world in infant mortality, nine spots behind places like Cuba. This is because of problems with access to health care, although we have the smartest people in the world. The first step of providing quality health care is providing access, he said. “We need to focus on individuals and prevention, and we need to stop these unsustainable cost increases. One of the first things to do, is to ask if the operation, procedure, screening, or x-ray is necessary, and if it’s going to “increase quality and length of life, it’s totally worth it. But if not, it’s a total waste," Dr. Teitelbaum explained, adding, “Frankly, when we do procedures, we put people at risk. We need to ask, if we don’t fix it, what would happen? patients, patients with heart disease?” Regarding Obamacare, Dr. Koury had this to say: “The country’s economy has collapsed, and the cost of health care is one of the contributing factors. One of the ways to help the economy to recover is to better allocate our resources in health care.” She cited that despite all the money spent in US, the country is behind in critical health care as shown in the presentation compared to other countries, so the high percentage of GDP devoted to health care costs cannot be justified. She continued, “It is my educated opinion that in 25 to 30 years, my grandkids are going to be learning in their history class, hopefully in public schools, that March 23, 2010 is a landmark in US history, because… [of the passage of] the Affordable Care Act.” Dr. Teitelbaum talked about the much-criticized websites and their troubled introductions. “New York State has its own website Newyorkstatehealth.gov. I was appointed by Department of Health to be on the commission for the

involved in the process. In response to a question from 73year-old cancer patient Jean Lange from Damascus, PA, about the long term availability of both care and drugs under Obamacare, Teitelbaum said, “Yes, government has cut provision for Medicare from the budget, about 700 billion dollars over the next 10 years. Do we like it? No. But neither Democrats nor Republicans want to fund Medicare, the bill is too high.” Obamacare’s basic approach is not rationing patients’ healthcare, but rationing payments to providers. “I believe the government is doing its best to fund patients and taking funding away from providers, which is precisely why hospitals are upset, because they are going to be paid less,” Dr. Teitelbaum said. “Recently, the Obama administration was making calls to reduce the availability of certain drugs under Medicare. The truth of the matter is, some brand name drugs like Nexium are a rip-off. They are chemically identical with much less expensive drugs. The question to ask is, do we want the manufacturer to get millions or billions of dollars, or do we want to put that money into Medicare, cancer

changes, but I take no credit that it rolled out well, went almost flawlessly,” he noted. “Basically, the states that refused to set up their own exchanges, mostly with Republican governors, had a mess. New York State did an amazing job. If you live in New York, and don’t have insurance, you should check out the exchange. In many cases you can get a subsidy on your premium, and cost share when you go to the doctor’s. Cost has gone down in New York. Why? Because it already had certain basic good quality health insurance.” Because Obamacare requires better care, in some states where you had insurance that virtually paid for nothing when you got sick, the premiums did go up, but as a result you actually

have real insurance, Dr. Teitelbaum explained. Dr. Nasser elaborated, “Prevention is very important. For the people with the most serious conditions, half of them reported not seeing a doctor in years, so there’s an opportunity to get caught up now.” Chances for cure are much better in many conditions if they are caught early. Under Obamacare, you cannot be assigned to a different group by an underlying condition in terms of risk. If you’re dying of cancer, you can still buy health insurance, Dr. Teitelbaum noted. “If you are a patient, this is amazing, good stuff. We’re spreading the risk among large population, resulting in lower rates for patients,” he said.

WMH’s Greco earns high post HONESDALE, PA — Wayne Memorial Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Coordinator Nadine Greco, MS has a new title: President of the Tri-State Society for Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (TSSCVPR). Greco was installed in May at the group’s state symposium in Somerset, Pennsylvania. Greco, who celebrated her unit’s 20th anniversary at the hospital last fall, is excited about her new role. “I really want to get more students involved in not only my field but in the Society,” said Greco. “Professionally, I am an exercise physiologist, and one of my goals is to increase our membership with students pursuing a degree in Exercise Science and Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.” Greco noted that the TSSCVPR membership is made up of more nurses than exercise physiologists. Greco was born and raised in Northeast Pennsylvania. She completed her Bachelor’s degree and a Master of

Science Degree in Cardiac Rehabilitation and Primary Prevention at East Stroudsburg University. Greco went on to acquire a second Master of Science degree in Foods and Nutrition from Marywood University. She joined Wayne Memorial Hospital in1992 and helped found the hospitals’ Cardiac Rehabilitation program. The TSSCVPR, which encompasses Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, is an affiliate of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Greco, along with other Tri-State members visited the Pennsylvania state capital this past March. They were recognized by Senator Lisa Baker and Representative Sandy Major and their fellow representatives during Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week. The Wayne County commissioners continued their tradition this year as well of proclaiming Cardiac Rehabilitation Week during February (National Heart Month).

Tri-Valley Lions thank life-saving CRMC nurse

ORMC honors Exceptional Nurse Orange Regional Medical Center has partnered with the DAISY Foundation to recognize its nurses for the excellent care they provide to patients. Erin Kirwin, Critical Care Registered Nurse, left, with Vice President/Chief Nursing Officer Joanne Ritter-Teitel, PhD, RN, CEA-BC, was chosen as the first honoree. Ms. Kirwan was honored for her care, compassion and professionalism while educating a patient and her family on the Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) process and advocating for and providing guidance to the patient and her family during the last days of life. The DAISY Foundation, an organization established to recognize and honor nurses who make a profound difference in the lives of the patients they care for, created The DAISY Award For Extraordinary Nurses in honor of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 from an auto-immune disease. His family was extremely grateful for the nursing care he received that they started a Foundation in his honor. For the past 15 years, hospitals across the nation have partnered with The DIASY Foundation to honor their nurses that go above and beyond.

To the editor:

We would like to thank the Catskill Regional Medical Center nurse who came to our fellow Lion, Monty LaHanko’s, rescue and performed the Heimlich Maneuver at Nardi’s during our dinner meeting of June 3. Without her expertise and skill, we were close to losing Monty that night. It was frightful, and we are so thankful that this wonderful lady was in the restaurant when this occurred. We would like to properly thank the nurse, but with being so flustered, she came and went without us ever getting her name. If she reads this and would like to identify herself, please call Tri-Valley Lion President Esta Jacob at 434-7755. If she would rather stay anonymous, just a heartfelt Thank You from our group. MONGAUP VALLEY — Dr. Jamie Noeth has been a practicing chiropractor for 22 years, and has been based for 18 years at her Body, Mind & Spirit Wellness Center. Located at 12 Plank Road, Mongaup Valley, it offers a variety of natural, holistic, homeopathic remedies to illness and pain in the body. The Center offers various treatments other than chiropractic including massage therapy, counseling/psychotherapy, Yoga, homeopathy, vitamins and herbs and aromatherapy products. Other Body, Mind & Spirit health care professionals include Laura Miller, psychotherapist; Susanne Spring, personal Yoga coach; Carrie Sabinsky, massage therapist; and Barbara Sush, office manager. Call 582-7777. The Democrat recently sat down with Dr. Noeth for a Q&A. Q: Where did you go to school? A: Actually, I’m a Monticello High School graduate, [graduating] in 1984. From there I went to Adelphi University and I got my Bachelor’s in their biology/pre-med program… in 1988. And then from there I went to Life Chiropractic College in Atlanta, Georgia, and I graduated from there in 1992. Q: Why did you choose to be a chiropractor? A: Well, when I was a kid my mom had asthma, and she was in the hospital, on ventilators, she was on all kinds of asthma medication. And my dad was like “That’s it, I’m taking you to this chiropractor.” Within three months she was totally off the medication, asthma-free and a new person, so we started going for family maintenance care. Q: What does chiropractic offer that regular medicine might not? A: It’s more of a natural, drug-free, holistic approach. We try to find imbalances in the body before they

are full-blown diseases where they would need to have surgery or medication. And our basic thing is we work with the spinal column and the nervous system, in that the nervous system controls every other system in your body. So sometimes things will get out of alignment in your body and that will cause your nervous system to malfunction and if left there for a period of time your body starts to malfunction. So it’s not always pain. Most people think if you have a back pain you go to the chiropractor. But only 10 percent of the nerves are actually pain nerves, so if you have a pain nerve that’s being pinched you’ll have pain. The other 90 percent of the nerves in your body control how your body functions. So if it’s pressing on a function nerve, you wouldn’t necessarily have pain but your body’s not going to function properly. There are different types of chiropractors, I’m a holistic chiropractor. In that we use other natural things like nutrition, herbs, homeopathy and acupressure and massage. Other things in addition to the chiropractic care to get your body back into bal-

ance and functioning at its optimum. Q: Do you feel it’s been accepted within the wider medical community? A: As time goes on… natural healthcare and alternative healthcare is actually surpassing traditional medical care in people’s first choice as far as dealing with something that has gone awry in their body. More people are seeking natural cures, people don’t want to just take a drug to basically hide or suppress their symptoms. They want to get to the root of the problem. “Why isn’t my body working? What’s wrong with me?” So more and more people are choosing alternative health care and doctors are actually being forced to recognize it because it’s not going away. And more and more people are choosing alternative health care. They started covering chiropractic care through insurance companies in the ’80s, so that’s 30 years ago. So it is being more accepted as far as being complementary, not necessarily you have to choose one or the other but a lot of times it’s good to have something that complements each other.

The massage therapy room at Body, Mind & Spirit Wellness Center offers mood lighting to help patients relax.

ELLENVILLE — Ellenville Regional Hospital was highlighted in early July by the Hospital Association of New York State (HANYS) under their NYS Triple Aim campaign for their work in medication safety. The hospital was recognized for preventing adverse medication incidents through its innovative and integrated Community Medication Safety Program. This program educates community members, providers, and consumers on medication use, dosage, interactions, and disease management. The hospital expanded clinical pharmacy services through the Community Medication Safety Pro-

gram by collaborating with the Albany College of Pharmacy, The Institute for Family Health, Matthews Pharmacy, Senior Housing located on the hospital’s campus, and other local practitioners to enable effective hands-off communication with a comprehensive standardized medication reconciliation document. Thousands of community members have benefitted from this program and adverse medication incidents have been avoided. This story illustrates how New York hospitals and health systems are implementing new and innovative approaches to healthcare delivery despite fiscal constraints.
