nsanity has come to the Fitness Factory in Monticello, in the form of Liberty native Julie Goodman Kaufman. No, not that kind of “insanity.” Insanity – a product of fitness conglomerate Beachbody, the creators of the popular P-90X fitness program- is billed in a company leaflet as “a revolutionary cardio-based total-body conditioning program based on the

It literally is insane.” Kaufman would discover that Beachbody actually offered an Insanity certification program. “I realized right then that this was something that I just had to bring to Fitness Factory.” After completing her certification Kaufman approached Fitness Factory owner Mike Dollard and said, “I think that this [Insanity] is going to be really popular here.… I started the program here in January and its been

The studio, located in the Muse alcove on Main Street, aims to fulfill Jane’s goals of “bringing healing modalities to the community… such as Reiki, massage, yoga, mat Pilates, and Tai Chi.” “People are drawn to the hub of Main Street,” Morris said. “They can come and take a yoga class, enjoy breakfast or lunch on Main Street at The Heron or Gerard’s Grill, have a

We adapted our yoga practice to include chair yoga.” Breathe has the same supportive and open environment, where instructors work closely with students who may be struggling with a health challenge and keep a close eye on their practice. Tony Staffieri, a Narrowsburg resident and student at Breathe, has been attending classes post-surgery and noted, “I find it very helpful in my recovery.” Currently there are five yoga classes, two Tai Chi classes, and Reiki and massage available by appointment. All classes are taught by certified and licensed instructors. Jane will be adding Zumba in April, as well as chair yoga classes. Jane also plans to have workshops in the Spring and Summer on Shiatsu massage and drumming circles. “Breathe is a place to gather together people doing yoga and gain the benefits of it. It is a place to come, be centered, and exercise,”she said. The response to Breathe has been incredible, with some classes reaching 15 attendees. “I am very happy to bring yoga to the people of this community and it is something I plan on doing for the rest of my life…” Morris said. Crossfit is a gym like no other V
IP Crossfit in Liberty is not your traditional gym. After all, with exercises with names like burpees, false grip ring rows and PVC deadlifts it certainly doesn’t sound like your average gym. And VIP Crossfit owner/operator Dustin Pritzert relishes in that difference. CrossFit, Inc. is a fitness company founded by Greg Glassman in 2000 which incorporates high-intensity interval training, olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, gymnastics, calisthenics, strongman exercises and other disciplines. Pritzert – who has a bachelor’s degree in physical education from SUNY Cortland – said that upon graduation from college, he found the job prospects in his chosen field slim as “no one was hiring teachers,”
he said. “So I had to get a job.” Pritzert eventually found work in the human services field but never gave up on his lifelong dream to one day own a gym. Then he heard about Crossfit and a little over a year ago Pritzert decided he’d take the two-day Crossfit certification course, and it opened his eyes. “I’d do a workout and collapse to the ground in a heap, just done… and I thought ‘This is amazing.’” So in late September Pritzert – who also coaches football, basketball and track at Sullivan-West – found a location and opened up VIP Crossfit at 9 Maple Street in Liberty. “I’m from Liberty,” he says. “It’s my hometown and I just really wanted to bring it [Crossfit] back here.” Crossfit, as Pritzert explained, focuses on three basic movements: squatting, dead-lifting and pressing.
VIP Crossfit gym owner Dustin Pritzert shows off the WODIFY software provided by his gym’s sponsor, Crossfit. The software keeps logs of all client workout information, progress, tracks attendance, and even keeps a nutritional journal designed to help his clients make smarter and more informed eating choices. Pritzert has certified nutritionist Matt Kansy come into the gym once a week for three hours to go over this information and talk nutrition with Pritzert’s clients.
“These functional movements are constantly varied and performed at a high intensity,” says Pritzert. Constantly varying those move-
ments is the key to Crossfit, because as Pritzert asserts, “Routine is the enemy. You’ll eventually lose the ability to do the movements and if you

Pritzert takes a very hands-on approach with his clients, always making sure that proper posture and form are used with each movement. “The ultimate goal here is to increase work capacity,” offered Pritzert, adding, “But the big thing I want people to know when they leave here is that I want them to feel successful. If anyone ever leaves here feeling defeated… Now, I think that’s happened twice here since I opened and that’s not what Crossfit is about. Anyone can do this.…” “Another thing that’s great about Crossfit is if you go to a traditional gym people have their earbuds in and are zoned out,” said Pritzert. “Here you’ve got people talking to each other, you know, it’s a communal thing. It’s all about the camaraderie here, we cheer each other on.” Pritzert also stresses the nutritional side of fitness and has registered nutritionist Matt Kansy come in for three hours each week to review VIP Crossfit members’ diets and offer feedback, as well as staging nutritional seminars for members. “It’s the
