aquain Jenkins of Monticello gets up every day, pats himself on the back, and says 'we did it.'” For the past eight years, Jenkins, now 32, has struggled with major heart issues – a challenging journey that has taken him through two heart transplants, one totally artificial heart, seizures and kidney disease. “It's all good,” he says, praising his local primary care physician, Dr. Jeffrey Weinstein, and nephrologist Dr. Juan Goyzueta, both of whom have offices in Monticello. And Jenkins has nothing but grati-

tude for Harboring Hearts, a nonprofit organization that assists heart patients and their families both financially and emotionally. Jenkins says he considers Harboring Hearts part of his own family. Jenkins and his wife Jennifer met 15 years ago and they have four children: Angel, almost 14, Jovanni, 12, Skye, 9, and baby Sophia, three months. “My life revolves around kidney dialysis and the kids,” says Jenkins with a grin. “There's never a dull moment.” Jenkins' health crisis began in

2008 when, suffering from what he thought was pneumonia, he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Both his biological father and grandfather died young of heart disease, and Jenkins was terrified. After being outfitted with a pacemaker and then a defibrillator, he underwent critically needed heart transplant surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in 2011. A year later, his body rejected the donor heart when the organ developed a virus. Jenkins then became the first patient in the tri-state area to be CONTINUED ON 7H

He is unable to work due to seizures brought on by bleeding in his brain, which was caused by blood thinners while he was on the artificial heart. Three days each week, he heads to the DaVita Catskill Dialysis Center in Monticello for blood cleansing. “This whole thing is an adventure that has its ups and downs,” he said. Michelle Javian, who co-founded Harboring Hearts after her own father lost his battle to heart disease in 2008, notes that Daquain Jenkins' outlook is amazing. “Daquain is one of the strongest, most inspirational men we have met,” she said. “He continues to smile and remain optimistic and positive. Wayne Memorial Hospital donates Noting that Wayne Memorial Hospital began back in 1920 as a memorial to Wayne County veterans who had lost their lives in World War I, the hospital’s current Chief Executive Officer David Hoff was honored to be asked to sponsor one of 17 podiums at the new Wayne County Walk of Honor. Each podium in the Walk, a project of the Wayne County Business and Professional Women (BPW), features the names of servicemen and women who are buried in Wayne County, a national cemetery or overseas. The Walk of Honor is on Court Street, next to the county courthouse, and is expected to officially open on Veterans Day, November 11, 2016. A ceremony scheduled for 11am will honor the 9,000 soldiers whose names grace the podiums. The site also includes a map of Wayne County cemeteries and a central monument with insignias from all branches of the military. “We are grateful to Wayne Memorial and our other sponsors,” said Betty deMaye Caruth, BPW, “and we welcome more. We will also need donations to continue to maintain the site. We hope people come and see it. It’s really a living testament to those who, by joining the military, signified their willingness to give up their lives for our freedom.” Photo left to right: Lisa Champeau, Wayne Memorial Hospital; David Hoff; and veterans and BPW Walk Committee members Melissa Rickard, CRNP/Air Force Reserves Ret., Lawrence Caruth, DMD/U.S. Army Reserves Ret., Betty Caruth, RN, PhD/U.S. Army Reserves Ret. or some, health means going to the doctor for an annual physical or check-up. For others it may mean chewing a daily vitamin, participating in an aerobics class, drinking more water, being free of diseases, eating an apple every day, being able to run five miles or cutting out junk food from their diet. To Laurie Spaeth, owner of Pepacton Natural Foods in Roscoe, health means food. “Good food is what we’re meant to run on. The major problem in chronic health issues that we have as a nation is that we’re not feeding ourselves right, and that’s such a terrible thing. It costs life and quality of life,” stated Spaeth. “Food doesn’t just affect how long you live but it affects how good you feel while you’re alive and how capable you are to do the things you want to do, and what you enjoy doing, whether that is hiking, water skiing, or just spending time with your grandchildren. You should feel good and energized, and it starts with food. “The body is a machine. We don’t just put any old junk in our car and expect it to run well, so why do we do that to our bodies?” Spaeth was raised on a subsistence farm in Orange County. Subsistence farming is self-sufficiency farming in which the farmer grows enough food to feed themselves and their families. According to Spaeth, her family also had cows, pigs, chickens, a huge garden and endless corn fields. Her parents were really into Adelle Davis – a

‘Good food is a birthright’ STORY AND PHOTOS BY AUTUMN SCHANIL pioneer in the nutritional field, an American author and an advocate for healthy food. Davis was the most recognized nutritionist in the country during the ‘60s and ‘70s, known for her advocacy of specific nutritional stances like unprocessed foods and vitamin supplementation. The Spaeths were also heavily influenced by Euell Gibbons, an outdoorsman and proponent of natural diets during the ‘60s. “After I got married I sort of got away from that basic relationship with food that I knew so well growing up. I was shopping for whatever in the supermarkets and it didn’t work out well healthwise,” said Spaeth, standing with one hand on her hip and the other buried in the pocket of her apron.

In 1990, Spaeth began working for a store in Pine Bush where she stayed for nearly six years alongside owner and friend, Shelly, who was a registered nurse who had worked in the cancer field. According to Spaeth, Shelly had a lot of experience in conventional medicine but taught herself a lot about alternative medicine as well. “It was just a real education to get to work with her. I got to see so many people transform their health there. People who were really sick but took her advice to change what they were eating,” Spaeth recalled smiling. “It was great to see the light come back to their eyes, their skin clear up and look ... not gray but vibrant, you know?” Spaeth was so inspired that when she moved with her family to Downsville, she opened her own shop shortly thereafter in 2001 called Pepacton Natural Foods. She and her family operated the store there for more than 10 years. When the sales in the Downsville store began to die down, Spaeth knew that a lot of her customer base was from Roscoe, so rather than have them travel so far to get to her, she decided to come to them, opening Pepacton Natural Foods in 2012 on Stewart Avenue in Roscoe. “We’ve been here in Roscoe for almost five years now,” said Spaeth, “and it’s always a work in progress.” CONTINUED ON 16H

Health officials say no one can get the flu from the vaccine, but you must be in good health to receive it. Have your insurance information available on the day of the clinic. ayne Memorial Community Health Centers (WMCHC) has been awarded a $1,000,000 Health Infrastructure Investment Grant from The Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Through this funding, WMCHC will expand the physical capacity of its Honesdale Behavioral Health Center, an outpatient treatment facility offering behavioral and mental health services to adults, adolescents and children, by nearly 4,500 square feet. “We’re really pleased to have been selected for this award. There are 49 Federally Qualified Health centers in Pennsylvania, and we were one of only four selected, stated Jack Dennis, manager of grants and development for WMCHC and WMH. Dennis indicated that HRSA awarded these spe-

cific grants to health centers in 45 states through a competitive process. WMCHC’S award of $1,000,000 was for the maximum amount allowed per center. The Honesdale Behavioral Health Center will remain at the Stourbridge Mall located at 600 Maple Avenue. However, by relocating from its current first floor office space occupying 3,000 square feet to a second floor space, totaling 7,486 square feet, the expansion will allow for the addition of two more behavioral health providers and eight more therapists. Additionally, the relocation will also make space for group meeting rooms, a pediatric treatment area and an administrative conference room. The dire need for expanded behavioral health services in the region became apparent following the completion of a

2013 Community Health Needs Assessment for Wayne and Pike Counties and the Carbondale Area. The study, conducted by WMCHC and Wayne Memorial Hospital, along with 14 community partner organizations, identified mental/behavioral health and substance abuse as the highest unmet community health need of the top ten needs identified. In 2015, WMCHC applied for funding from HRSA to help the health centers’ capacity to address the community need. In addition to behavioral health, WMCHC offers primary care, women’s health and dental services as well as specialties including surgery, pulmonary, cardiology and neurology. WMCHC is a clinical affiliate of Wayne Memorial Health System, Inc. For more information on all services, visit www.wmh.org/ WMCHC or call 570-253-8390.
