ullivan County can lay claim to a medical practice few other rural areas are blessed to have. Three doctors, two nurse practitioners, two social workers, and a support staff of three make Synergy of Monticello, Inc. the largest private psychiatric office in the area. Yet you’ll find you’re treated not as a number in an assembly line of patients, but as the unique individual you are, with focused, caring attention on your mental, emotional and physical needs. Dr. Peter Panzarino, who founded the practice in 2005 with a hospital social worker, points to the collaboration of the entire team in ensuring

whole families are treated with respect, compassion and professionalism. Indeed, that’s why he named it Synergy – to reflect the practice’s comprehensive approach. Indeed, the entire practice fills what was a large gap in healthcare in the region. “I was working in the hospital, and I had patients with nobody to refer them to,” Dr. Panzarino recalled. Now retired from being both vice president and chief medical officer of Catskill Regional Medical Center, the experienced physician is happy to offer an incredible range of mental health services to a county in need. “It is a privilege to be working with the people of our area struggling with life’s issues, mental illness and chemical dependency, and I can’t think of a more satisfying challenge,” he said. Hypothermia risks rise with dropping For kids, seniors and those with heart disease temps

T

he American Heart Association warns individuals with existing heart disease or stroke, and those who may be at high risk for these illnesses to use caution during heavy snowfalls and wintry conditions. This includes people with a strong family history, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smokers, those who are overweight and the sedentary. For these individuals, the stresses of the cold weather may pose extra concern and the association is urging individuals to use caution to avoid sudden cardiac death and hypothermia.

RECOGNIZE THE SYMPTOMS OF HYPOTHERMIA

Hypothermia occurs when your body can’t produce enough energy to keep the internal body temperature warm enough, causing it to fall below

normal. It can kill you. Heart failure causes most deaths in hypothermia. Symptoms include lack of coordination, mental confusion, slowed reactions, shivering and sleepiness. Children, the elderly and those with heart disease are at special risk. As people age, their ability to maintain a normal internal body temperature often decreases. Because elderly people seem to be relatively insensitive to moderately cold conditions, they can suffer hypothermia without knowing they’re in danger.

around your body. Similarly, dampness causes the body to lose heat faster than it would at the same temperature in drier conditions. To keep warm, wear layers of clothing. This traps air between layers, forming a protective insulation. Also, wear a hat or headscarf. Much of your body’s heat can be lost through your head and ears are especially prone to frostbite. Keep your hands and feet warm, too, as they tend to lose heat rapidly.

STAY WARM

AVOID ALCOHOL BEFORE HEADING OUTDOORS

People with coronary heart disease often suffer chest pain or discomfort called angina pectoris when they’re in cold weather. Besides cold temperatures, high winds, snow and rain also can steal body heat. Wind is especially dangerous, because it removes the layer of heated air from

Alcohol gives an initial feeling of warmth, but this is caused by expanding blood vessels in the skin. Heat is then drawn away from the body’s vital organs. Alcohol consumption and physical activity in harsh winter weather conditions can increase the likelihood of hypother-

mia. The American Heart Association recommends the following tips to help respond to and prevent sudden cardiac arrest:

LEARN CPR, HANDS-ONLY CPR CPR: About 80 percent of all out-ofhospital cardiac arrests occur in private residential settings, so being trained to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can mean the difference between life and death for a loved one. Effective bystander CPR, provided immediately after cardiac arrest, can double a victim’s chance of survival. The American Heart

Association conducts courses convenient to everyone. To access a course listing, log on to the AHA’s web site at www.heart.org/cpr Hands-Only CPR: Hands-OnlyTM CPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths. It is recommended for use by people who see an adult suddenly collapse in the “out-of-hospital” setting (like at home, at work, in a park). It offers an easy to remember and effective option to those bystanders who have been previously trained in CPR but are afraid to help because they are not confident that they can remember and perform the steps of conventional CPR. It consists of two steps: 1) Call 911 immediately (or tell someone to do that). 2) Begin providing high-quality chest compressions by pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest with minimal interruptions. For additional information on Hands-OnlyTM CPR and to watch an instructional video visit www.handsonlycpr.org To learn more call 1-800-AHA-USA1 or visit www.heart.org.

Robot ‘performs’ surgery Orange Regional Medical Center recently provided an opportunity for visitors and staff to “test drive” a simulated version of their robotic surgery equipment. The da Vinci Si HD Surgical System is advanced technology used for a minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery. Robotic surgery is an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy. With da Vinci, surgeons are provided with the precision, dexterity and control of traditional open surgery, while only requiring, in most cases a 1-2 centimeter incision. The surgical system consists of an ergonomically designed surgeon’s console, four interactive robotic arms and a high-performance vision system. The surgeon is able to view highly magnified 3-D images of the body’s interior. Robotic-assisted surgery offers several benefits for patients, including: reduced trauma to the body, shorter recovery time, less change of infection and less postoperative pain. umans are not meant to hibernate. Just as tulips need winter nourishment from the Earth to strongly bloom in spring, we need to continue to nourish our bodies( including exercise) during winter so we too can bloom come spring. If the thought of getting outside to exercise makes you dive under the covers, instead choose one of the many indoor workout options. Below are just a few of the many choices. Remember to always consult a physician before beginning a work out regimen.

• Walk at an indoor location, like a

mall. If you need extra motivation to get yourself to the mall, join a walking group. This will help you stay

accountable to someone other than yourself.

• Join a health club. This will provide you with a large variety of physical activities to choose from every week. • Create a home gym. This doesn't have to be expensive. You can easily set up a great workout routine with just a set of dumbbells, an exercise ball and a jump rope. Get all of this for around $50. • If you have stairs where you live, spend as little as 20 minutes at a time climbing up and down. This makes for a very intense and efficient workout. • Get wet. Find a local indoor pool

you can use. Try swimming, water aerobics, or even just walking or running laps in the water. Remember, even if you are not noticably sweating, the resistance of the water enhances your work out.

• Visit a library. Usually local libraries offer exercise videos you can check-out for free. Pick-up a new one to try out every time you return the previous video. This provides a way to find which kind of routine works best for you. If aches or pains prevent you from staying active, a physical therapist can help to diagnose and treat your pain and get you back to doing the things you love.

Yoga goes hip (and pop)

J

anice Center owner Tanya Cohen was listening to what people were saying. Some didn’t care for Zumba because it was too fast and hard on their knees, though they liked the uptempo music. Others liked yoga, but wanted something more from it. So she went to work on a new program that would appeal to both types. After five months of research and experimentation, Cohen hit on a concept that integrated hip, contemporary music to traditional yoga poses. Rockin’ Yoga was born at The Janice Center. Now in its seventh month, the twice-weekly class is catching on. There is a core group of five to six regulars as well as another four or five who pop in here and there. And since January, some new additions have become regulars. “It’s taken some time, but it’s the type of

class you have to try and experience to see what it is,” said Cohen. “My regulars absolutely love it – they say it’s the best fitness-type of class they have ever taken.” As Cohen describes, the class gives yoga a new hip tempo with original choreographed routines set to classic rock music. The one-hour session transitions from one traditional yoga pose to another. There is no dead silence, but constant motion. “It’s really a perfect balance of yoga, stretching, cardio and strength training,” says Cohen. “It’s different and it’s fun. Come and check it out.” The class meets on Tuesday (5:30-6:30 p.m.) and Thursday (6:15-7:15 p.m.). The fee is $10 per class or you can purchase a 12-class package for $100. The first class is free. For more information, please contact The Janice Center at 482-3324. CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS
