K

oberlein Environmental Services started in 1960 with two employees and one truck. Today, the company has grown to 48 employees and over 45 vehicles to provide septic services to Northeast Pennsylvania and the adjoining counties in New York. The business was founded by Sam Koberlein, who was a chicken farmer and hauled steel. Using his truck that he used for steel he saw an opportunity to use it for another purpose. So he built a tank for the truck and started pumping septic tanks in the local area. He was already well-known and quickly built up his business. It was owned by the publicly traded company, U.S. Liquids, and in 2001 it was acquired by Chris

Ravenscroft, who remains the President today. Ravenscroft said he wanted to keep the name Koberlein because it already had such a positive reputation and legacy in the community. He added “Environmental Services” to the name to showcase the variety of services they offer, which covers the spectrum of services required to manage non-hazardous wastewater systems. “I didn’t want the name limited in the eyes of our customers or potential customers in the range of services that we could provide,” Ravenscroft remarked. It started as a residential septic pumping business and now offers commercial and municipal cleanPresident of Koberlein Environmental Services, Chris Ravenscroft, acquired the company in 2001.

ing, line jetting, clearing blockages, system repair and installation, as well as selling and servicing pumps. They have three locations, with the main office being in Honesdale, and the others in Ferndale and Waymart. Maintenance of septic systems is very important for homeowners. Ravenscroft said the tank should be pumped every two-to-three years. “Pump your septic tank just like you change the oil in your car every three or five thousand miles to protect the value of the motor, pump your septic tank to protect your septic system,” he said. If it’s well maintained, the system can last for approximately 30 years. Ravenscroft said to call their office or visit their website to get quotes on any of the services they provide. If you are a new homeowner and need a septic system installed, they

work with different engineering firms and can make a recommendation. Once the engineer drafts a plan, Koberlein can give a price estimate on the system, obtain the local permits required and install it. “I think we really specialize in customer service, our technicians are well trained, they’re focused on helping our customers in terms of meeting their needs and answering their questions,” Ravenscroft said. Their technicians are scheduled for on-call service if an emergency should arise after hours. “The people that are here are really the reason why the company has been around since 1960,” Ravenscroft said. “I think that there is a real commitment to providing superior service to our customers.” Call Koberlein at 570-253-3660 or visit them online at www.koberlein.com.

tion, with the potential to be used as a working animal barn once again or converted into a luxurious retreat space. A path leads past the barn to a wooded area boasting what was once an apple orchard, and beyond that, a spring fed swimming pond with a small man-made beach on one side. “You don’t need to go anywhere to hike or walk, you can do that right on your own property,” said Karpowicz looking out at the water. “You could spend an entire day out here and

Fall onto you

ne of the most amazing wonders of the fall season is watching the spring and summer trees’ green leaves turn into the yellows, reds, and browns of autumn. Those leaves eventually fall down to the Earth, slowly at first, but soon into late October, your lawn is littered with leaves. What do you do? Many choose to rake them or blow them into piles and bag them to dispose of them. But wait, why not find other ways to deal with leaves that can be fun, beneficial to the environment and educational.

blowing in the wind. You might want to shred some of the leaves to speed up the process of composting. Add layers of the fallen leaves and mix in grass clippings or any other organic material. Let it sit out all winter, turn the pile occasionally. If you see the mound is drying out, add some water. Once spring rolls around and the birds are singing their morning songs, your compost pile should be ready to mix into your garden soil. When you compost, you create rich humus for our garden, which will add vital nutrients to your soil and help keep it moist.

Compost Pile

Mulch

If you have a garden, you can benefit from making a leaf compost heap. Try to pile your autumn leaves into a corner on our lawn. You don’t want them blowing away, so maybe use chicken wire to hold them down or something that will prevent them from

Take out your lawnmower for one last ride. According to a study done by Michigan State University, using your lawnmower to mulch, your leaves can provide nutrition to your lawn and help eliminate weeds over time.

Fall leaves don’t have to burden you this autumn. Go out and have fun with them while helping the environment.

such as bees, moths, butterflies, snails, spiders, and others. They also use the cover to protect against predators.

Have Fun Use the highest setting on your lawnmower and cut your lawn as you usually would, but use a crisscross pattern. Depending on how much falls, you might have to do this at least once a week. The leaves will decompose and feed your lawn with rich nutrients that will result in a healthy lawn come springtime. You can also use the mulch you created as

bedding for your flower garden, shrubs, or vegetable garden.

Circle Of Life Leaves aren’t only good for us humans; it also suitable for the wildlife that digs around in the dirt. Those leaves on the ground provide the wildlife with cover over the winter months

You can always just have fun with your fall leaves. Make a pile of your colorful fallen leaves and just jump in as when you were a kid. Make memories with your family, and toss around the leaves. Make time for a fall photo shoot, as fallen leaves can make a great backdrop. Whichever you do, know that fall leaves do not have to be a burden. They can be useful for the environment, good for your lawn, and good for your soul.

f we’ve learned anything recently it’s that living in big cities aren’t all it cracks up to be. We’ve had a calling back to simpler times. Living in nature, enjoying what each season has to offer and finding time for a quiet respite. That’s why this enchanting and well-kept Victorian in the sleepy river hamlet of Hankins is the perfect home. It has been completely weatherized and stays cool in the summer and cozy warm

in winter with minimal use of heating fuel. The four-bedroom, two-bathroom home, which was built in 1935, is perfect if you’re a young family looking for a larger home, if you are retired or are looking for a perfect weekend getaway. The home, on 10 Hankins Street, is located only five miles along scenic route 97 from the charming hamlet of Callicoon which offers shopping, restaurants and a farmers’ market every Sunday. The home itself is spacious with a large, bright family room that’s open to the kitchen, where you can spend quality time with loved ones or entertain guests. There’s also a living room and a dining room which has a wood stove.

Above the well equipped and charming kitchen looks out over the family room. To the right is a natural stone wall and functioning wood stove to keep you cozier whether this room is used as an office or as a dining area. Below the Victorian charm of the house and its beautiful surroundings is apparent.

The house also boasts a great master bedroom upstairs, two other similar size bedrooms and another smaller one which could also be perfect as an office space. In the past the dining room has also served as an office. The house has access to Spectrum cable and WiFi. With the latter and the home’s spacious composition, two people can easily work remotely. Heading outdoors, French doors from the family room lead out to a deck and a gorgeous Japanese Maple that blazes scarlet in the spring and again in the fall. New fruit trees have been planted on the property and a well established little vegetable garden plot has provided fresh produce for many a dinner. The house is surrounded by well tended floral borders. A dirt road around the property is perfect for kids to ride their bikes or for a nice walk with the dog. There’s no better time to escape the stresses of urban life and appreciate the joys of small town living. Don’t wait! This home is priced to sell. Storage/display opportunities

METRO CREATIVE SERVICES PHOTOS

This travel trunk from the 1970s is now a reimagined family heirloom storage trunk that fits well into any room.

In furniture, along walls and in hidden places

inding more space to store and display all the “stuff” used for day-to-day living, as well as life’s pleasures, can be an adventure that ends with everything in its perfect place. Woodcraft can help you with a few ideas to kick-start your space hunt and then suggestions for tools and supplies to make your storage projects successful. Small tables with enclosed storage underneath, chests and trunks that provide seating, benches with builtin storage, beds with built-in space underneath or in the headboard, and kitchen islands with concealed

nooks are all options to manage “stuff.” In the kitchen, add drawers to the space (toe-kick) beneath lower cabinets to store rarely used items. Shelving and bookcases, either builtin or freestanding/open or enclosed, will transform unused wall areas or sections of large closets into instant storage for a wide range of items. Nooks cut out of the wall and covered by pictures offer one of many concealed storage options that also include nooks or drawers in the sides of enclosed staircases. The ideas for storage and display

projects are endless and can be found through Internet searches and on Woodcraft.com in books like “Stanley Built-Ins & Storage” by David Schiff, in the Woodcraft blog, and in free videos and articles.

Plan for Painting Up Front “When choosing where to develop storage and display space, you have the opportunity to rethink the colors in rooms where changes will be made,” Woodcraft Public Relations Manager and blogger Lori Harper said. “By using paint in building, buying or repurposing storage

pieces, you can change or supplement an existing color palette.” Woodcraft stocks a wide selection of finishing and paint products, including the versatile General Finishes Milk Paint, General Finishes Flat Out Flat Topcoat, Black Dog Salvage Furniture Paint, and Black Dog Salvage Guard Dog and Show Dog Topcoats.

Shortcuts & Safety To save time when building drawers, check out the Ready-to-Use Prefinished Birch Drawer Sides at Woodcraft. For some really made-to-order storage units, use WoodRiver Cubby Cube Connectors. Available in three configurations — cross-brackets, Tbrackets or L-brackets —these handy connectors allow for quick and easy construction of multiple cube storage using 3⁄4"-thick material in any size you need. Protect your ears while using power tools with ISOtunes Professional Noise Isolating Earbuds — OSHA-approved hearing protection and Bluetooth technology so you can connect to a smartphone and listen to music. If protection is all you need, consider the Pyramex BP 3000 Banded Earplugs. to create very strong joints. Check out Festool’s CXS Compact Drill Driver Set for drilling pocket holes and adding pocket screws, as well as handling other day-to-day drilling and driving challenges with comfort. Tight spaces, dark spots, and corners are no match for it. For projects that require using nearly invisible fasteners, the industrial strength Grex 23-gauge Headless Pinner leaves only the tiniest of entry holes, making it ideally suited for finishing work, detailed woodworking, light wood assembly, decorative trim, dowel and joint pinning, and picture frame assembly. To provide air pressure for the pinner, Rolair’s JC10PLUS Compressor is a good choice. The oilless machine features a 1 HP, single-stage, twocylinder motor/pump and a stainless steel reed valve that runs on low RPM for optimum quiet operation. Building drawers is easy with the Kreg Drawer Slide Jig that supports drawer boxes while mounting slides to the drawer. The jig works with ball-bearing, epoxy-coated, and undermount slides for perfect positioning every time.
