A seamless solution

All Day Construction did this seamless red gutter install on a beautiful log cabin.

SEPTEMBER 4, 2020

BY JOSEPH ABRAHAM

C

hristopher Williams has worked in construction and carpentry for years, but when asked what aspect of it he enjoys the most, he’s quick to say: seamless gutters. Having recently relocated to North Branch from Long Island, Williams brought his business, All Day Construction, which specializes in seamless gutter installation, with him. And the name fits. “Our hours are pretty much 24/7, if necessary,” he says. Williams started All Day Construction in 2018 with his uncle, who has been working with gutters for decades and has his own business in Long Island. All Day Construction installs all sorts of gutters –– commercial, residential, half round, etc. Williams’ ties to Sullivan County date back to his grandfather Les Krum who built the home he now

resides in. “We love it here,” he says. “The customers are great and it’s much calmer. No traffic.” As the old adage goes, “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” And Williams loves what he does. “It’s like working at the gym,” he says. “You’re going up and down the ladder. It’s like doing legs.” His favorite part of the job is exploring the different color choices and helping customers find the perfect match for their home.

For example, Williams explains that if you have a log cabin, you’d never have white gutters, instead you might use brown, green or red. And while some might discard their importance to a home’s design, All Day Construction knows the value. “It’s the crown molding of the home and dresses it up real nice,” says Williams. “We take pride in our work and customer satisfaction.” He adds that they hang the gutters in one piece, and make them right out of their truck. If, in the rare chance there’s a special piece they don’t have, they always go the extra mile for the customer. “If they need it, we’ll order it,” says Williams. In addition to their work with gutters, All Day Construction also paints and stains decks and log cabins. Any pet owner who has suspected a dog has eaten wild mushrooms should consult a veterinarian. Early treatment can help and prevent more serious organ damage or death. Pet owners who cannot trust their dogs unattended in the yard should bring their pups out on leashes or keep careful watch on them while they’re outdoors.

og owners often find that having a fenced-in space gives pets an opportunity to run around offleash and enjoy time outdoors and can make it easier for pets to go out on bathroom breaks. Still, pet owners must recognize that inquisitive dogs can get into trouble even in seemingly safe yards. One potential danger is ingestion of potentially toxic mushrooms. It is essential for homeowners to check their yards for mushrooms all year long, but especially during wet springs and in the fall. Mushrooms can pop up overnight. Depending on the type of mushroom and the size of the dog, ingesting even a small amount can result in gastrointestinal distress or more dire circumstances, like liver failure. Certain mushrooms give off a fishy smell and they may entice dogs who are prone to indiscriminate eating. According to the animal care resource Preventative Vet, signs of mushroom toxicity include vomiting, salivating, yellowing of the skin

Home office must-haves R emote work has been around for many years, though it certainly picked up steam in 2020. In an effort to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus COVID-19, in March 2020 government officials implemented stay-at-home measures that mandated many working professionals to begin working from home. That transition occurred seem-

ingly overnight, forcing men and women to find somewhere in their homes to work. As the dust settled and working professionals grew accustomed to working from home, many recognized the need to have an office in their homes. Various factors can make home offices more conducive to getting work done, and the following are some home office must-haves that can help people be more productive while working from home.

Lighting Lighting is important in a home office. It’s easy to overlook natural light, especially for

workers who previously worked in offices that did not have windows. But natural light can help save on energy costs and boost mood. In fact, natural light is a valued commodity for people used to working in office settings. A 2018 survey of more than 1,600 workers conducted by the human resources advisory firm Future Workplace found that access to natural light and views of the outdoors were the most sought after attribute of a workplace environment. In addition, 47 percent of workers surveyed admitted they felt tired or very tired from the absence of natural light or a window at their office. When designing their home offices, homeowners should keep this in mind and choose areas of their homes that get ample natural light during a typical workday. Additional lighting also will be necessary. Recessed lighting can give an office a sleek look, and lights that can dim can allow workers to adjust their lighting based on how much they need at any given point in the workday.

Quiet Professionals forced to work at home when social distancing measures were implemented may not have had much quiet, especially for those with young children whose schools were closed. But when designing a home office, homeowners have the chance to make their offices more conducive to concentration. Soundproofing walls may not be necessary, but look for areas of the home that don’t

get much foot traffic. Kitchens are very popular rooms in many homes, so try to locate your home office away from the kitchen. A spare bedroom upstairs may make for the most ideal home office setting if the home does not have a traditional den. Spare bedrooms come with doors, which can instantly create a sense of quiet when closed. A converted garage also can make for a useful home office, but make sure the room already has cooling and heating and, ideally, windows.

Electrical outlets Recently built homes tend to be equipped with enough outlets to accommodate our increasingly connected lifestyles. But older homes may need some electrical updates before they can capably accommodate home offices. When updating your electrical, replace existing outlets and fixtures with energy-efficient LED fixtures, which save money and benefit the environment. Before updating the electrical, decide on how you want the office to be laid out so you can have outlets installed where your computer, devices and other items, like a printer and television, will be. This makes it easy to hide cords and give the office a clean, professional look. Home office capabilities became a big priority in 2020. Designing such spaces can be fun and easy. Remote work has been around for many years, though it certainly picked up steam in 2020. In an effort to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus COVID-19, in March 2020 government officials implemented stay-athome measures that mandated many working professionals to begin working from home. That transition occurred seemingly overnight, forcing men and women to find somewhere in their homes to work.

magine your driveway with wooden fences on each side, rolling pastures beyond, and horses throwing their heads up knickering at the sight of you. That overwhelming beauty is a welcomed surprise as you turn into the entrance of the 77-acre High Road Farm on Eagin Road in Youngsville. “It’s another world being here,” stated Associate Broker Beth Bernitt. “There’s a real quiet beauty when you stand here and look at everything,” she said while standing just to the side of the house, looking out. The single-family ranch home sits atop the hill with views of the Catskills beyond, horses in the paddock to the side, an exquisite horse barn just in front, and the swimming pond with lily pads on one side. The four bedroom house has a large wrap around deck with sun in the mornings and shade in the afternoons, with a fragrant flower garden planted all around. If you’re a lover of honey bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, the porch will be your haven. The entrance to the side of the house steps you into the spacious mudroom, perfect for those rainy or

snowy days to take off your boots and jacket before coming into the kitchen. Custom built, the kitchen boasts “wood mode” cabinetry, hickory wood floors, a Wolf six-burner gas stove, and a center island with Quartz countertops. The center island is a perfect place to share breakfast with the kids or spread out to cook those extravagant Christmas dinners with the family. The open floor plan brings you into the dining room filled with light from large windows all around, and then into the living room, which is clearly the center of life in the home. “The brick fireplace is great to have going at night for that cozy, warm feeling as you sit around together,” said Bernitt, “but the wood stove is really the shining star. It heats the entire house.” The wood stove brings back childhood memories of listening to the snaps and crackles late at night, watching parents or grandparents opening the large door and placing another piece of wood inside. The living room is large but intimately cozy with bookshelves from floor to ceiling, comfy furniture, and plants next to the bay window. A room full of potential for any homeowner. Above: The master bedroom at the far end of the house is airy, spacious, and cozy with plenty of sunlight. At left: A guest bathroom is located just off the master bath, separated by a sliding in-wall door.

“Down the hall are the bedrooms,” said Bernitt as she turned on a few lights leading the way. The Master is private, and warm, with a window that overlooks the horse paddocks and the woods beyond, and the connecting master bath has beautiful large mirrors with a vanity built in. The master bath leads into the guest bathroom with radiant heated floors and a jacuzzi tub. “The home has so much potential,” Bernitt stated. “Whoever decides to buy the property can keep it as a working farm, they could board horses like the current homeowners do now. It could be a luxurious Air BnB or some kind of retreat space. It has the space and the potential to be anything you want it to be.” What really sets the property apart, is the horse barn. The tack room is clean and new, and the horse stalls are spacious and beautifully constructed. Large doors open on each end of the barn letting in sunlight and air flow. The ceilings are high to keep the barn cool on hot, summer days. It’s a barn for a working horse farm complete with a birthing stall and bathing stall. “We once had a lot of horses on this land,” said the current homeowner while stroking one of the horses in the barn, “but as we got older it got harder to manage. So now we have a horse that I’ve had for about 15 years, and just a few horses that we board.” Stepping outside to the right is a little park-like area near the pond, a perfect place for a picnic table, a swing set, or an evening fire pit. “The 77 acres are so versatile. It’s great for people who enjoy snowmobiling in the winter, four wheeling in the summers, or trail riding on the horses. I want to live here,” Bernitt laughed. If you’re interested in the property or would like more information you can contact Beth Bernitt at bethbrealtor@yahoo.com or call 845-791-5280.

The right garden design can greatly enhance first impressions of your home.

Beautifying your garden BY PATRICIO ROBAYO or 32 years, Gay Donofrio has been beautifying homes across Sullivan and Orange Counties, as well as parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

She provides award-winning, professional, and unique landscaping to homes along with her husband, Bob. Gay began her business with a friend when she was a teacher in Long Island. Having a degree in art, Gay said she always had an eye for design. She started her landscaping busi-

spent her childhood roaming the woods of Long Island. As a child, she wanted to research everything that was part of nature and learn about trees and the different types of flowers. So when she and Bob moved to CONTINUED ON PAGE 22H

Sullivan County, she felt right at home. “I love all of Sullivan County, it has everything,” said Donofrio. This includes the county’s lakes, hiking trails, to its rolling pastoral views. When you call on Perennial Gardens to help bring your home’s

landscaping to life, Gay will set up a consultation with you to visit where you would like to install your new garden. Working with the homeowners, Gay designs a unique perennial garden for your home that will last for years to come. “It's all great fun, and it's all enormously gratifying to pick a wild area that may be overgrown and turn it

into a beautiful landscape,” said Donofrio. Not only will she design and install your garden, but Perennial Gardens will also install stonework and ponds that will further enhance it. One of her favorite perennial flowers is Goldenrod, which she says is long-lasting and comes in different sizes and shapes, and it does not induce hay fever as its pollen is too heavy to be airborne. Another favorite of hers is Catnip or Catmint, as it is sometimes called. Since COVID-19, she has been fortunate to see a boost in business. Many of her clients, who were sometimes weekenders, began living full-time in the Catskills to escape the big city. And suddenly, looking at their properties with new eyes, felt the need to enhance their surroundings. “It’s been a remarkable and very busy summer,” said Donofrio. Another feature of her business is garden maintenance. She offers services to spruce up the garden throughout the year and helps maintain it to look fresh. Using organic material to help keep the garden fresh looking is essential to her for both the garden

and the environment. And she teaches this philosophy of organic gardening to her clients and stresses how important it is. “We always garden organically, and I don’t ever use any kind of chemicals,” said Donofrio. “It’s important that they keep their property safe for their children, their animals, and themselves.” For more info, call Perennial Gardens Landscaping at (845) 5825760 for a free consultation or visit them at perennialgardenslandscape.com.
