Among kindred spirits who garden

HOME IN THE COUNTRY

Susan Dollard has been working on the gardens at her own home for nearly 40 years, calling them her “labors of love.” She now shares her expertise with others through Friends of the Garden. CONTINUED ON PAGE 6H

STORY AND PHOTOS BY AUTUMN SCHANIL hey’ve hosted workshops on how to create terrariums, fairy gardens and wreaths; classes to learn about microgreens, orchids and succulents. They have plant sales, go on field trips and are working to give back to the community one garden at a time. The Friends of the Garden organization began about a year ago with the collaboration of Susan Dollard, friends and other volunteers that had met at Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) and elsewhere. “When I left CCE, many other volunteers were coming to their end there as well,” said Dollard. “We wanted to continue what we loved doing and so we tried to figure out how we could do that.” So they held a meeting and decided to form the group Friends of the Garden to help local individuals and organizations by raising money to put back into the community through garden work. “We’re still young and still learning but

T

we’ve raised enough money that we can turn it around and give back wherever we see the need,” explained Dollard. “There’s a lot of grants out there and things for non-profits but a lot of folks need help, and they’re not really in a position to get a grant like that.” As of right now there are 26 members of Friends of the Garden, all volunteers. Many members are past Master Gardeners but anyone who has an interest in gardening, volunteering and giving back is encouraged to join. All potential members fill out an application and pay dues to join. Members include individuals from all over the county, which allows them to be aware of the needs of people in other villages, hamlets and towns. “I think it’s great when people join and they understand what we’re doing, what our focus is. The best part is working together. You have kindred spirits with you that feel the same way you do, that love to garden,” Dollard said smiling, “and helping somebody, it really is a good feeling.” If you’re thinking vegetable gardens,

that’s not the case here. Friends of the Garden work on beautifying an area with perennial flowers and plants, mulch, landscape art and much more. The group has hosted various workshops and classes in order to raise the money that enables them to buy mulch, plants and other necessities. After that, the labor is completely volunteer. The most popular class taught so far? The fairy garden class. “The first one held at the Pickled Owl in Hurleyville filled up so quickly, we actually had to turn people away,” Dollard said. “So we decided to do another one and that one filled up just as fast. It’s been really great.” At the fairy garden class, Friends of the Garden provided the participants with Hypertufa containers, small house plants to plant inside them plus three or four tables of moss, stones and bark. Pretty much anything you might find in the woods. “Everyone was so creative,” beamed Dollard. “People really blew us away with the things that they came up with.” During their regular meetings, Friends

of the Garden members always try to have an educational piece to share with the rest of the group, something learned from a recent trip or gardening tips acquired from a class. “That’s the great thing about what we’re doing,” said Dollard. “There is always something new to learn and the more we learn, the more we can share with, and help, others.” At their next meeting, members will be helping the Sullivan County Federation for the Homeless in Monticello. They’ll be re-vamping the sign area, sprucing it up with mulch and plants. Dollard also asked each member to please bring one or two items they can donate to the not-for-profit organization. “I got a list of some of the things that

Dollard created this whimsical, other-worldly terrarium containing earth, living plants and tiny residents outside their miniature house.

I believe most of them feel the same way about each other. We all want to give back to the community, no strings attached, no rules or regulations. We like to do things where the community is involved as well, not just the members of Friends of the Garden. It’s a good feeling.” To find out more about Friends of the Garden or to apply to become a member until their website is completed, you can contact Susan Dollard at 845583-5437.

It’s also walking distance from Junction Pool, where the Willowemoc Creek and a Beaverkill River join, and the legend of the two-headed trout was born. Built with high ceilings and hardwood floors throughout, this custom-renovated home with three bedrooms and two and a half baths is cozy, inviting and full of natural sunlight that streams in from its many windows. The year-round sun room, full of large windows on every wall, overlooks the extended lawn, perennial gardens and outdoor patio that features a custom built stone grill. With a snug and petite breakfast nook, central fireplace, many built-in bookcases, storage in every place you can imagine (think stairway steps and secret wall cubbies), a private office on the third floor with walk-in cedar closets and a basement so tidy and airy you’d hate to call it a basement, you are sure to feel right at home in this country getaway. And if you enjoy entertaining guests for the weekends there is a pleasant three bedroom and two bath guest house just a stones-throw distance from the main house. From the outside, the guesthouse is a charming, whimsical cottage; something out of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Once inside, the guesthouse feels spacious, airy and comfortable with a fireplace, bookshelves, roosterdesign wallpapered kitchen and a second floor that harbors a large master suite, reading nook and roomy foyer. “The owners really went about renovating the house and property in such a unique and beautiful way,” said Realtor Jean Dermer, “and I really see the potential that this house has to be a wonderful Bed & Breakfast, with so many rooms, the guesthouse and being so close to all the shops and cafes, it could definitely be a small retreat for people visiting the hamlet of Roscoe.”

Sullivan County houses are moving! BY: Lynne Freda, President of the Sullivan County Board of Realtors

ullivan County is in the thick of an exciting period of home buying and selling. For the first time since the boom, we are seeing bidding wars again! Many deals are getting multiple offers that are near, or even above, asking price – depending on the factors of the home. It was widely predicted that sales activity would be robust during the second quarter of 2106, and the market has not disappointed. Pending sales are up from a year ago, with more than a 21% increase, 57 sales in May compared to 47 last year at this time. Great news on prices: there’s been a big jump in the average sales price, up 40% from last year – $202,316 compared to $143,874 from May 2015. The median sales price is also up, from $117,500 last year to $119,000

asking price. Add to this market, fewer homes for sale now: 1,148 compared to 1,238 this time last year – that means our inventory is down, which benefits sellers. This all signals the beginning of a turnaround from a buyer’s market to a seller’s market. There are still

SOLD now. Sellers are edging closer to their asking prices, selling at 91.1% of their asking price. Real estate agents often get asked what homes sell for "off the asking price" – so, another way of looking at that is the average home is selling for about 9% off

A cleaner way to refurbish BY ANTHONY MORGANO For a cleaner way to remove graffiti, rust or paint, consider a new Forestburgh-based business called Dustlessblasting. Bob Sipos, who also runs Mr. Willy’s Restaurant in Monticello with his father, started Dustlessblasting as a way to keep his restaurant equipment clean and functional. And now, he’s looking to take on customers who wanted a quick and environmentally safe way to tidy up. Dustlessblasting uses a glass and water base, which makes it environmentally safe, and also less messy than traditional sand media. In addition to being cleaner than sand blasting, dustless blasting also works better than a traditional pressure washer. If you would like to have your pool’s paint stripped or the graffiti and excess paint taken off a building, you can contact Bob Sipos by phone at 845-798-0889 or by email at dakota354@gmail.com.

be an effective pest killer. Fill a spray bottle with soapy water and spray around the exterior of your house and on plants that have a pest problem. The soapy water can kill ants and roaches. It also can coat the wings of small flying insects. Catnip is another natural pesticide. Planting catnip in a garden can repel mosquitoes. Use epsom salt. Sprinkling this salt

on the leaves of plants in the garden can keep away animals, such as deer or groundhogs, that would otherwise devour plants. Epsom salt also can repel beetles, slugs and snails. ommercial farms are often blamed for the vast array of contaminants that find their way into water supplies and the soil itself. But home-gardening enthusiasts may also be contaminating water and soil through the use of pesticides. Data from Green-NetWorld, an environmental advocacy group, indicates Americans use approximately 2.2 billion pounds of pesticides every year. Pesticide use is a prolific problem. Research indicates that many pests targeted by pesticides will eventually develop resistance to these pesticides,
