Adrianne Picciano started her business, The Dirt Diva, ten years ago and works with clients to design, install and maintain perennial flower and vegetable gardens.

BY ISABEL BRAVERMAN o some she is known as Adrianne Picciano, but to most she is known as the Dirt Diva. A skilled gardener, Picciano started her business, The Dirt Diva, in 2009. Based in Damascus, Pa., she designs,

their garden. She also works with businesses, including The Laundrette in Narrowsburg and the Liberty Library. A lot of her work is in the design process. She creates architectural drawings and puts it all together like a puzzle. She also involves clients in this process, as well as selecting plants. “I want people to feel proud of their garden,” she said. “That’s the best working relationship.” From there, it’s time to get her hands dirty. Picciano got into gardening when she was attending SUNY New Paltz. There was a community garden that she started going to. “I loved the multi-generational skill share that was happening there,” she says. “The community aspect pulled me in.” After college she moved to the area and worked at Silver Heights Farm in Cochecton Center. While there she enjoyed working with customers to find just the right variety of plants that they

were looking for. That’s when she launched her own business to continue those relationships. Currently she teaches workshops for adults and started a Kids Garden Club at the TustenCochecton Library in Narrowsburg. Her expertise is in seed saving, composting, permaculture and organic vegetables. On advice for newcomers who want to start a garden at their home, she says to really look at the “ingredients” of your property—what is the soil like, is there shade or direct sun, is it flat or in a valley, etc. She also says to assess how much time you will have to dedicate to taking care of the garden once it’s up and running, and to be realistic with time management. “It’s like taking care of a kid,” she said. Once you have those things figured out, “start small and build from there.” And if you need a little help along the way, The Dirt Diva will be there for you. Photos of singers and concertgoers from the historic 1969 festival line the walls of the front desk lobby. “We had this since the beginning, and a lot of guests who come in take photos here,” said Tinari. Visitors can transcend time while viewing the historic photos while picking up information on where to go while you are staying at the lodge. Moving from the Bronx with his family—his wife Claire and their two sons, Joe Jr., and Chris—they purchased the property in 1987 with the hopes of turning it into just a simple bed and breakfast. First fixing one room at a time, the business soon started to attract not only passing visitors but clientele from New York City and beyond. Nowadays, the lodge uses Facebook and Instagram to reach potential customers. A few years ago Joe started a series called “Bingo Travels” where he showcases an area in the county that might not see a lot of tourists. “There are so many places here in Sullivan County,” said Tinari. “We promote all the small places that are really nice and will cost them very little money, or no money at all.” Joe makes it a point to visit local

irst-time visitors to Sullivan County are often surprised to see the proliferation of buildings throughout many parts of the county that bear a striking resemblance to buildings from the southeastern or southwestern United States and other parts of the country with strong Spanish influences. They are almost always even more surprised to hear that the particular architectural style is unique to this area and is usually

referred to these days as “Sullivan County Mission.” Sullivan County Mission style buildings developed in the area during the 1920s, and remained popular throughout the 1930s. The style was typified by many of the great hotels of that era, most of which have long past from the scene, including Fallsburg’s Plaza and Hotel Furst, the Belmore and the Congress in Sackett Lake, and countless others, but wasn’t just confined to the hotels. For example, after the great fire of 1919, a section of what was to become Broadway in Monticello was rebuilt in the style. The last of the O&W Railway

microcosm of its development. The story of how Sullivan County Mission architecture came to be has got to begin with the industrialist Henry Morrison Flagler, once one of America’s richest men, and co-founder, with John D. Rockefeller, of the Standard Oil Company. Although some sources have credited Flagler with building the Fallsburg hotel that bore his name, his connection to the resort was much more circuitous than that. Henry Morrison Flagler did not build the Flagler, which, in the 1920s and ‘30s, became the undisputed queen of the Catskill resorts. That distinction

He was not related to Henry. Henry Morrison Flagler’s most direct connection to Sullivan County is the w crude oil pipeline his Standard Oil Company built across a section of the county to carry oil from Olean, N.Y. to Hackensack, N.J. But he does have a very indirect - and quite inadvertentconnection to the hotel that is relevant to the subject of Mission architecture. state of Florida in the late 19th century, building a magnificent hotel in St. Augustine to honor the Spanish explorer, Ponce de Leon, in a style reflecting the architecture of Spain. Hotels in Palm Beach and Miami followed, all designed in a somewhat similar style. These hotels were built in collaboration with Thomas Hastings, of the architectural firm of Carrere and Hastings in New York. Flagler and Hastings were both sons of Presbyterian ministers and became fast friends despite their age difference. When Asias Fleischer and Phillip Morganstern, two salesmen who had some experience in the resort industry,

They discovered that many guests assumed that Henry Morrison Flagler owned or was otherwise connected to the hotel, and they decided to do nothing to discourage that notion. Accordingly, when they constructed a new main building at their hotel in 1920, they made it look like one of CONTINUED ON PAGE 20H

Even Grossinger’s, which was growing into the first true mega-resort in the county, exhibited Sullivan County Mission architecture at one time. Still, many of the smaller hotels, without the necessary budgets to modernize their buildings, retained at least some of the Mission styling. A few of them remain today, although not as hotels, and they have truly become architectural treasures.
