Peace on the river
he Delaware River gently flows between lush green river banks on one side of River Road near Callicoon, while wooded banks line the other. The houses are petite, unique, and a beautiful reflection of tranquil river life. The road is quiet and slow, perfect to walk on a breezy day or bike to town for a coffee and pastry. As you continue further down, the wooded banks open up to larger green lawns and cabin-esque houses facing the Delaware, like this 2,500-square-foot home at 556 River Road sitting on 3.85 acres with 213 feet of river front: a perfect place to reside year round or to use as a vacation home. Turning into the driveway, the cedar-sided home sits back atop a small hill overlooking the river, with a fenced in yard and part of the Catskill mountains behind. “The side entrance is here next to the attached one-car garage,” said Callicoon Real Estate LLC Broker Rosemarie DeCristofaro, pointing to the door while walking across the driveway. As you enter, the first room is a bluestone foyer with a

Large front windows allow for plenty of natural light while the high beamed, wooden ceilings create a spacious, cathedral feel in the center of the house. “The house was built in 1985,” said DeCristofaro standing near the kitchen island. “Since he bought it, the owner has put a lot of work into the home, from smaller details to larger renovations like the in-ground gunite swimming pool in the back of the house.” The home’s open layout consists of a central staircase where just a few steps up to the second level leads you to a hallway with an extravagant office-space bookshelf from floor to ceiling, two bedrooms to the left, a spacious central CONTINUED ON PAGE 12H

Hidden treasure in Roscoe STORY AND PHOTOS BY SARAH CLARK
N
estled in the valleys of Roscoe, New York is a unique camp that offers visitors a relaxing getaway with amenities that make campers feel at home. The Hidden Chalet is an “alternative camping experience” that is both relaxing and convenient. It is only a short ride from downtown Roscoe, where campers can find food, fun, and shopping during their stay. “My intentions were to have a bed and breakfast,” The Hidden Chalet Owner Joseph Ofria said. In 2011 he started to rebuild the camp, and in 2012
his friend Dale Dutcher and other locals helped Ofria rebuild the property. “I couldn’t be blessed any more to have them,” Ofria said. In 2003, he built what is now called the Headquarters, a two story building with two bedrooms and a garage, which needed repairs after the storms that ripped through Roscoe in the summer of 2007. “I was coming up here a lot,” Ofria said. “All of a sudden it transformed into almost like an Alice in Wonderland type of thing.” Ofria suffered from a ruptured brain aneurysm and needed four surgeries prior to the grand opening of the camp in 2018. He was able to list The Hidden
Chalet on Hipcamp, a website that allows travelers from around the U.S. to book campsites that are featured on the website. Hipcamp has only been in business for three years and has over 300,000 listings. Recently, Ofria was able to attend a gathering hosted by the company to their camp owners. The event included workshops in marketing and business, and Hipcamp owners were able to meet with each other during the gathering. “It was just very nice because there was a lot of input,” Ofria said. “Because they’re just growing they need input from their campers and their camp providers.” The hookup is one of the several campsites which gives people who book the site the ability to hook up a camper to water, waste, and electric for them to use. Tents can also be pitched at this site as well. “I think that once you walk behind the house and up the hill and turn the corner, it transforms into a different world,” said Ofria. “And then at night when you have the fires going and there’s people and music… it just seems like you’re in a different world.” The Confessional, a fully operational bathhouse with a toilet, bathtub, and a

sink, is located on top of a hill along with three of the other sites. The Cupola is a small camper equipped with a bed, microwave, stovetop, and a minifridge. Everything is repurposed by Ofria, and campers can

Dale Dutcher (left) and Joseph Ofria (right) standing in front of The Secret Chalet. This site has running water, propane, and it sleeps two to four people.
Ofria keeps The Hidden Chalet open for as long as he can, weather permitting, and prices range from $75 to $175 per night depending on which campsite the camper would like to book. “I am looking for a specific class of people,” Ofria said. “I don’t care if I book them or not. I care about the quality of the people that I get so that I make sure that they’re respectful.” Guests that stay at The Hidden Chalet can enjoy the unique experience that the camp provides. The hiking trails, camp amenities, and the local attractions are sure to provide a pleasurable experience for Ofria’s campers.

find items around the cabins with price tags so that they can purchase the different novelty items. The Secret Chalet was inspired by a shed in England, and Dutcher executed Ofria’s idea. With an Alice In Wonderland style, the small and cozy cabin with carpet and an oak tabletop sealed with stamps Ofria collected from a friends mother. This campsite also has running water and propane. “I went through basic internet search and looked up things that showed him a couple different plans,” said Dutcher. “Once it started then that probably didn’t matter anyway.”

ochecton Oil has been a family owned and operated business since 1959. Now they are expanding by adding a brand-new office building (they currently operate out of their home on Route 52 in Cochecton) and providing customers with all of their heating needs. Owners Peter and Norma Pierce took over the business from Peter’s mother and father in 1995. They started the business with heating oil, and they now offer propane, kerosene and on-road and off-road diesel. With their four employees, including their son Patrick, the services they offer include full propane tank installations, appliance conversions, tanks for sale and propane piping systems. It all started when Peter’s parents moved to the area and bought a house that had oil heat, which was uncommon at the time as most people heated their homes with wood or coal. His father worked for the county as a truck driver and bought an old oil truck and started selling oil. He also worked for the Post Office, so he delivered mail

your oil tank. Peter says most of their customers are on automatic delivery, so they take care of that for you. There is also some new technology that allows them to monitor your levels from their office, and you can also check on your smartphone. As we all know winter can bring some severe storms and with that power outages. Peter says a lot more people are buying generators now. They can install generators at your home and provide the propane that they run on. “We’ve been around a long time and have been evolving, and we try to do it within our means, try to expand at a rate that we can handle as opposed to jumping in and hoping that we make it,” Peter said. “But we’re still doing it, still moving forward. We started out as a mom and pop operation and it is still that sort of operation.”

“Now we’ve added some people, we’ve added some marketing, which is all added to what we’re able to do and where we’re able to go,” Peter said. As the business increased they outgrew the small office inside their home, so they are constructing an office building, which will be completed this fall. “The emphasis I have is on being able to take care of your customers without getting over extended where you’re unable to do it or unable to get people deliveries in a timely fashion, which is a challenge,” Peter said. As winter approaches, it’s important for homeowners to get their heating system serviced, and to make sure it’s operating properly. The overall condition of your house is important too, as leaky windows and doors can increase your oil consumption. It’s also important to check the level in
