trout-in down main street t’s often the truly unique things in life that are the most memorable. In terms of parades, there’s few as unique as the Trout Parade, which takes place on Main Street in Livingston Manor. Created to bring together the Livingston Manor region and the Catskills at large, the annual street fair celebrates the community, taking place on the second Saturday in June each year. This year’s event, the 15th annual, is slated for Saturday, June 9 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Trout Parade is produced by the Catskill

Art Society (CAS) in partnership with the Livingston Manor Chamber of Commerce. A community-based project, the Trout Parade is not only Sullivan County’s foremost art parade, but the proceeds it generates from individual donations and the sale of parade merchandise will help to support community organizations. Started in 2004 as a local grassroots festival, CAS has produced the Trout Parade since 2010. For more info, call 845-436-4227. story and photo by Joseph Abraham

ome to Wurtsboro, NY, “the jewel of Sullivan County.” A town that’s transforming with its old integrity, into a new age community. Crystal Connection is in an 1890s church in the center of town, surrounded by yoga studio, vegan restaurant, health food store and some anchors of the town, Canal Town Emporium and Danny’s Restaurant. At Crystal Connection, you can find one of the largest crystal collections in the northeast, offering the biggest variety of material from all over the world at the lowest prices. These stones will help heal your physical, mental and spiritual needs and growth. They started off as just a crystal store but have turned into a crystal destination by many. Crystal Connection gets to be a foundation for many spiritual seekers on their path. They love when they come in to touch and experience all that the mineral kingdom has to offer. The Church it-
self creates a very unique atmosphere coupled with their knowledgeable staff, creates a very calming and sacred space to feel, heal and connect. They thoroughly enjoy seeing people’s faces as they walk through the door in awe and wonderment, so excited to be there. Crystal Connection also loves helping people find the right stone for their purpose so they can have a mineral experience. Come on in and ask for the Tourmaline Test, and they’ll show you how crystals work. Karynn has been with the store since the beginning. Her in-depth knowledgeable of crystals is by far more advanced than most authors. Combined with her own take of what they are and how they interact with each person, she is a great asset to all customers coming in. Tiffany, started four years ago helping with inventory and moving her way up with mineral understanding. Her growing love for the crystals, has develCONTRIBUTED PHOTO

oped a sense and knowing of her own, allowing her to come into herself. She has been rewarding for the store with her organizational skills, and has become an asset as the store manager. Travis being a co-owner of Crystal Connection, totally aligns his life with the mineral kingdom. His enthusiasm, understanding and wisdom of the crystals, leads him to be a go to person for anybody that wants to know how a particular crystal will harmonize in a person. He and Tim harmonize on the belief that minerals are alive and, if used correctly, can benefit many facets of life. Tim studied with Isidore Freedman in a
teaching called the Study for the Society of Natural Order, and to get his own life on path, he strongly went into transformational work. He has a strong understanding of the body and mineral connection and is the original founder of the store. In his belief, he never shyed away from buying the best of the best of stones, giving you a selection that is hard to believe without you seeing it. His mission statement is to have people understand themselves. In closing, Crystal Connection has transformed from a great crystal shop to a mineral destination. They also have the best of the psychics, intuitive work and healers of all kinds, with classes being held throughout the season. With open arms, Welcome to their world.

fresh + flavor by Joseph Abraham he word “fresh” is thrown around a lot in restaurants today. But for Jon Westergreen, fresh is more than a term...it’s his unwavering commitment to sourcing local. The menu at his restaurant, The Kaatskeller, on Main Street in Livingston Manor, NY, is filled with several flavorful options, many of which contain ingredients grown, raised, or foraged on his farm. The Kaatskeller specializes in wood-fired artisan pizzas, including "The Manor" (Neversink Farm arugula, roasted red pepper, aged prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, San Marzano tomato and 10-year Modena balsamic vinegar). The pizzas blend traditional Italian “OO” flour and organic New York milled wheat, adding an irresistible taste and texture, differing from the typical doughy feel. Another tasty pie is The White Album (House made wild ramp & kale pesto, bacon jam, Sherman Hill Farm Chevre, shaved Parmigiano Reggiano, fried egg and broccoli shoots). Pizzas can also be made vegan or gluten free by request. If you’re feeling creative, you also have the option to build your own custom pizza!

Christopher Tierney has successfully opened and designed bars and restaurants across the country, directing the design and buildout of the Kaatskeller. He added elements of glamour and glitz inspired by the heyday of the Borscht Belt era to the Kaatskeller. Westergreen explains that, “If you’re looking for a taste and experience of the Catskills, we provide it.” He added that The Kaatskeller is shaped by four pillars: food, service, value and experience. “We’ve tried to raise the bar on all those key levels,” he said. Want to beat the crowd? Reservations for inside table service can be made directly or through Opentable.com. Walk ins are always welcome to enjoy the outdoor garden seating. While in town, make sure to head across the street to Main Street Farm, which Westergreen opened eight years prior. A market cafe, Main Street Farm takes pride in being a purveyor, preparer and seller of fine locally grown and artisan food. You can enjoy a variety of soups, sandwiches, salads, coffee/espresso or shop for locally produced goods.
