or 139 years people have journeyed from far and wide to cross over the Chestnut Creek in Grahamsville to partake in one of Sullivan County’s premier events, the annual extravaganza that is the Little World’s Fair. The fair is sponsored by the Neversink Agricultural Society and will open its doors on August 17, 18, and 19. “We’re very excited about some new events taking place at the fair this year!,” said Neversink Agricultural Society Inc. Treasurer Nicole Gorr. It will feature a variety of farm animals that are hosted by Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County's 4-H of Sullivan along with food vendors, craft vendors, unique rides and classic carnival games provided by Shamrock Shows that will dazzle the mind. The fair will have new events this

year like a scavenger hunt between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. throughout the weekend. When you enter the fair, visit the information booth to learn more about the scavenger hunt. Clues will be located throughout the fair where you can answer facts and pick up goodies when you return to the booth. Once the children are done, they can bring the completed form back to the information booth for a fantastic prize. Look up in the sky...It's a bird.. It’s a plane, no it's the first ever Children's Super Hero Fun Run which will be held on Sunday at 10 a.m. The children will take a lap around the fair and afterward, will be awarded prizes for the best costumes. Those who want to be in the run, must arrive all dressed up and ready to go at 9:30 a.m. at the information booth. Farm animals are on display by several county 4-H members who enter their animals in the open beef shows that the whole family can enjoy.

to amaze those who come to the fair will be Mike Piazza, and his Flying High Dogs doing fantastic aerial tricks. Other shows include: Poultry and Egg; Sheep; Goat; and Alpaca. Moreover, 4-H will hold a pie auction on the main stage with a livestock auction that follows soon after that. There will be fun for the whole family with events like Nature Nick's Animal Adventures, bedazzled with magic by Matt Stevens, take part in the Watermelon Eating Contest, and check out the Grahamsville Fair Classic Car Show. No fair would be complete without music. Bands like Hillbilly Parade, Thunder Ridge, Fast Forward, and White Wedding are slated to perform. On Saturday night, the sky will light up with a spectacular fireworks display sponsored by Coombe, Bender, and Co. One crowd favorite is the Draft Horse competition which will be held on the main stage on Saturday. Horse pulling involves one or two horses that pull a stone-boat or a weighted sled. The winner is chosen by the amount of weight that the horse pulls and/or the team that pulls the most for a short distance. The event started when horses were still being used on

Youth project work at the heart of the Sullivan County Youth Fair

I

n conjunction with the Grahamsville Little World’s Fair, the Sullivan County Youth Fair takes place with an exhibition of youth project work, livestock displays, youth animal shows, public presentations and free interactive activities for all ages. Organized by Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County’s 4-H Youth Development Program, the Youth Fair is the county showcase of youth educational work for the promotion of agriculture and domestic arts, pursuant to New York State Department of Agriculture Law, Article 24, relating to fairs across the state. Exhibits are judged/evaluated as part of the learning experience, with opportunities for youth to qualify or advance to the New York State Fair and beyond. Viewing by the public is an integral component to the recognition of this work so

the community is encouraged to come. In 4-H youth development programs, life skills and developmental outcomes are accomplished through informal educational opportunities which support independence, mastery, generosity and belonging. Although unique in structure, the fair fulfills these goals and provides an important venue for continuing youth development. 4-H members and volunteers are key to the smooth and safe operation of youth fair events and are present alongside CCESC staff throughout all three days of the fair to answer questions and share their knowledge with the public. If you see a 4-H Clover on a hat, shirt, bandana or other item, chances are these folks will know the answer! As the fair signals the completion of a year of educational projects, so does it heighten the anticipation of a new year of activity beginning on October 1. 4-H enrollment and participation in the Sullivan County Youth Fair is free in Sullivan County and is open to youth
