To one of the hardest working and nicest guys we’ve had the pleasure to have in our family.
Steven Silverman enjoys a ride with one of his buddies.
Thank you Steve Silverman, I am the manager of the Sullivan County SPCA. I have known Steven Silverman for 10 years. I first heard of him 10 years ago, when the well pump went here at the shelter. Calling around for someone to come and help out, (it was a Sunday) was a huge issue, no-one would come. Steve called me back and sent a crew right over. It was a good 5 hour job. We knew it would be a lot, but we have to have water. The bill arrived and it was $0 dollars. That was exceedingly generous, but I heard he was a great guy. We had a huge issue, not too long after that and had to have a new hot water heater installed. We opted to go tankless as we use a lot of HOT water. Steve installed the unit and did not charge us again.
The qualities that make Steve Silverman, owner of Silverman Mechanical,
We have had to have the well pump replaced 2 more times (no fault of Silverman Plumbing) there is a lot of sediment in our well. Steve has come and replaced the well pump each time with no charge to the shelter. We have had many issues with plumbing in the past 10 years, and there has never been a time that I called Silverman Plumbing and he did not send someone over right away to help. We could have been stuck with NO water for all the fur-babies numerous times.

Why’d you chose this career: I worked at the Democrat as a teenager in the summer and was encouraged to do so by my parents because I was good at spelling and vocabulary. I proofread articles, made copies, got coffee, helped with computer issues, even mowed the lawn. I enjoyed being a part of a team at the paper, putting a product together twice a week. Having a part in that was very compelling. Then when I enrolled at SUNY Sullivan, I took English Composition with Eileen Israel, and for the first time I had a teacher who was encouraging me to cultivate a talent I had for writing. So between summers at the Democrat and that class, I realized

John Pawlowski STORY AND PHOTO BY CAROL MONTANA
Name: John Pawlowski Age: 48 Where do you live: Pine Bush Place of employment: Catskill Regional Medical Center Current title and duties: Director of Rehabilitation Services. That’s a dual role; I serve as a Physical Therapist, treating a full caseload of patients. In addition to that I have leadership responsibilities over the Harris and Callicoon campuses for the rehab services departments. Through the rehab department, we provide physical, occupational and speech therapies at three levels: the acute in-patient, the sub-acute rehab, and the out-patient therapies. We have a team of 30 therapists and support administrative personnel; it’s a great team.
John Pawlowski
Years of experience: 26. I’ve been in this job for 13 years. Previous employment: I have worked in various roles and practices. I started my career at New Rochelle Hospital. While there, I also saw home-care patients, and worked at a private practice in White Plains. Then I moved to the mid-west and was part of a start-up company called Progressive Health Rehabilitation, during which time I went back to grad school, met my future wife who was from Kingston (I was from Amsterdam), so the writing was on the wall that at some point we’d end up back in NY. I reconnected with the private practice in White Plains and was asked to run their practice. I worked there for about six years. Then when we were expecting our second child, so while looking around for available real estate, and seeing the prices in
Westchester, we decided it was time to move elsewhere. I interviewed here. It seemed like a great opportunity. I accepted the position and I’ve been here ever since. Favorite part of your job: Having the opportunity to assist people to reach their maximum potential. That goes for my team and my patients. Most challenging part of the job: The paperwork. If I could just treat patients all day and have someone else record what I’m doing that would be great. Certainly, the challenge with working some of the insurance companies, having to do more with less is something that we have to become accustomed to. But we try to advocate and fight for our patients. Favorite on-the-job moment, patient or memory: It’s really what CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

Name: Taylor Van Keuren Age: 26 Where do you live: Parksville Place of employment: New Hope Community, inc. Current title and duties: Athletics Coordinator – As Athletics Coordinator, I am responsible for the management and growth of our Special Olympics program, along with providing activities for our LAC (Living Arts Center) and WOW (Without Walls) day habilitation programs. Other responsibilities include co-managing the “Up on weekends” summer respite program, outreach and volunteer evaluation of NHC's growing volunteer program, and managing NHC’s pool. Years of experience: Eight years Previous employment: The Center for Discovery Favorite part of your job: I get to make this program my own. Which means I get to reach the people we support in an authentic, purposeful way. I am able to bring the things that I enjoy and am passionate about to the people we support. Most challenging part of the job: The hours. While I am very lucky to have a flexible schedule, some activities and events fall outside of a normal workweek. But these activities are always to the benefit of the people we support, so I’m happy to do it. Favorite on-the-job moment, customer or memory: Last year at a Special Olympic track and field time trials
event, one of the Special Olympic directors for our region approached me to express how impressed she was with the level of sportsmanship and competitiveness displayed by my team, coaches and myself at the previous Unified Basketball tournament. It was a proud moment for me, as I had a sense of validation for our approach and what we try to teach our athletes. Education (high school, college): I went to Liberty High School and some years at SUNY Sullivan. Favorite movie: The Town Favorite actor and/or actress: Robert Downey Jr. and Charlize Theron How do you spend your spare time: During the winter I try to stay active playing basketball 1-2 times a week, and watching movies or playing video games. Favorite vacation spot: I haven’t been on a real vacation in a few years, but I would like to spend a week in Greece or Italy. If only for the food scene. Family: I’m not quite sure what to put here, I have an older brother and two sisters (one older, one younger). I am very close with my family, and we are in a dart league on Wednesday nights over the winter. We have also hosted a local ice fishing tournament for the last 29 years. Son and daughter but no grandchildren. My wife Kyoshin is the manager at the Tusten-Cochecton branch of Western Sullivan Public Library in Narrowsburg. The library is closed due to pandemic but she goes to the premises every day and checks the building and any mail or deliveries. She’s a bright light here in the town, and with her sister Wendy has founded a local theater company (Act Underground). It was their unfortunate sacrifice to indefinitely postpone a planned production of a new play by a local playwright (“The Dog Walker” by Katherine Lewis of Narrowsburg. Come see it when it reschedules at the Krause Hall at the DVAA). Civic or volunteer affiliations: I supply music for art openings and a vocal music class. Martin Colavito Name: Martin Colavito Age: 62 Where do you live: Liberty Place of employment: Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County with St. John St. School Community Hub. Current title and duties: As Program Manager and I oversee the activities at the Hub and provide a safe environment for kids and hopefully everybody in the community. The goal is to make it an intergenerational community hub. Years of experience: 45 years Previous employment: Catholic Charities providing substance abuse services. Favorite part of your job: My favorite part of my day is coming home to see my wife Lynn and talk to her. For my job, my favorite is that I can serve the community. Most challenging part of the job: Being 62, a lot of what I do is a marathon that requires a lot of effort. A lot of people don’t understand what it takes to start something and bring it to the point of sustenance. It requires a lot of energy and a lot of effort. You put your physical health aside, and you put your emotional health aside for greater good. Favorite on-the-job moment, customer or memory: It’s more of a story than a memory, a woman who walked into the place in Newburg and said she was dying and had stage four cancer. We asked her what we could do for her and she said, “Can you help me live?” I said, I can’t help you live, but I can kind of help you live. She was afraid because her daughter was pregnant and having children and
she gave everything she could to grandkids. She was sleeping on the floor, she would eat on the floor, and she knew she was dying and wondered who’s going to take care of her grandkids. So we figured stuff out for her, but she asked me to hug her. I hugged her, and I remember when I was hugging her and it reminded me of when I was a little kid, and I would hug my mother. I always remembered this because I felt hopeless when I was hugging her, and for a split second, I felt hope. The hug transcended everything. Education (high school, college): For High School I went to St. Helena in the Bronx. For my undergraduate, I went to St. John’s University, and I have a Master’s Degree in Human Services from Lincoln University. Favorite movie: Stepbrothers Favorite actor and/or actress: Sean Connery How do you spend your spare time: I take walks with my wife, Lynn. Favorite vacation spot: I go over every year with my wife to Italy Family: My wife Lynn and I have two daughters Sara and Jess and three grandchildren, Amaiya, Mariah, and Jasmin. Civic or volunteer affiliations: I am part of SALT (Sullivan Allies Leading Together), a grassroots organization designed to compassionately navigate those in need to appropriate human services and the Human Rights Commission for Sullivan County. Favorite quote (who said it) /words to live by: A quote by Edmund Burke, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

Age: 55 Where do you live: Bethel Place of employment: Bethel Woods Center for the Arts
Current title and duties: Senior Curator overseeing The Museum at Bethel Woods, the historic site of the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair Years of experience: I have been working in the museum field for more than 25 years, developing historic sites and museums. Previous employment: I have served several museums in very unique locations; in the Caribbean, the desert of Southern California, and Hawaii. But I started my career at the Ohio History Connection in Columbus, Ohio. Favorite part of your job: It is a privilege to work somewhere that most people come on their day off or their vacation. Most challenging part of the job: People have a lot of things they could do with their free time, it is a constant priority to make the museum a place that meets expectations, is authentic, and is fun.
Favorite on-the-job moment, customer or memory: In the Caribbean
81648
we had a proposed cruise ship excursion where people would visit the museum and then snorkel on a ship wreck site. For two months I snorkeled everyday on several shipwrecks documenting weather,
waves, and visibility. That is a hard job moment to beat. Education (high school, college): I have a Masters in Architecture and a Ph.D. in History from The Ohio State University
How do you spend your spare time: I love Jeeps and music, between those two things I have almost no spare time. Favorite vacation spot: My wife loves the beach; I love my wife. Family: We have three sons, two of them have pursued architecture as a career. The Caribbean left a deep impact on our youngest, and he is working in the field of marine biology. Civic or volunteer affiliations: I have seen Rotary International do amazing things in the communities we have lived and believe their motto of service above self is worth working toward.
Favorite quote (who said it) /words to live by: “Whatever the mind can conceive, the mind can achieve.” Napoleon Hill. This quote is about the power of dreams; conceiving something no one has ever done before. When asked about Woodstock, Michael Lang said, “I always thought if you could dream it up, you could pull it together.” It is the same idea. The Museum at Bethel Woods can really be seen as the story of the work and perseverance it takes to make a dream happen.
