Name: Anthony Bruno Age: 35 Hometown: Middletown, NY Place of employment: Monticello Casino & Raceway (MCR) Current title and duties: General Manager of Monticello Casino & Raceway Years of experience: 12+ Previous titles with your company: Auditor, Marketing/Finance Manager, Director of Financial Analysis & Planning, Director of Operations, Assistant GM, General Manager Favorite part of your job: Each day brings new experiences, both challenging and rewarding, which keeps me on my toes and excited to come to work. I have been very fortunate to work under great leadership which has allowed me to grow into this position. Early in my career my passion was finance, which consisted primarily of recording and projecting business activity, but now I get to help shape it. This is by far the most rewarding role I have had yet. Most challenging part of the job: As in any business, we have both internal and external customers. Our main goal at MCR is to provide quality service to our external customers, our guests. The challenge lies in creating an environment where the internal customers, employees and vendors, believe and share that common goal. Favorite on-the-job moment, customer or memory: Due to our

“Cheers” type of environment at MCR, many of our regular customers know more than just our names; they know our hobbies, birthdays, favorite sports, etc. They know us as real people and vice versa. When I took a few days off last year I was amazed that several customers actually reached out to me by phone to make sure that I was all right. While it may seem like a small gesture, it meant much more. Education (high school, college):

Arnold Ackerley III STORY AND PHOTO BY WILLOW BAUM Age: 45 Hometown: Neversink, NY Place of employment: New Hope Community, Inc. Current title and duties: Director of Admissions and Development. I am responsible for the admissions process at New Hope Community. I meet with individuals, and, often, their families, to determine if we can help them live the life they are seeking to live. I am fortunate that I get to meet a lot of people and discuss their hopes and dreams with them which is really a privilege. I also develop new homes for people with developmental disabilities. In collaboration with our team here at NHC, I locate suitable properties, secure the funding to purchase, and then work directly with architects, general contractors, and decorators to deliver a beautiful home for people in need of residential services. I also supervise a dedicated team of advocates, who work diligently on behalf of the people that live at New Hope Community. They do really great work here and I am lucky to work with them. Years of experience: I have been working for people with Developmental Disabilities for 16 years. Previous titles with your company: Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professional, Quality Assurance Associate, Senior QIDP, Director of QIDP. Previous employment: I spent two years in the U.S. Army in the early 90’s. I worked briefly in corporate banking in Albany. I then started my career in Human Services at the Center for Discovery in 2000, moving to New Hope Community in June of 2005. Favorite part of your job: I love witnessing the success of others. Whether it’s the people receiving services at NHC or our staff, I love watching someone achieve their goals. Most challenging part of the job:

Opening a new home is a massive undertaking. Managing these types of projects puts me in regular contact with state and local officials, landowners, Realtors, attorneys, architects, contractors, decorators, inspectors, individuals, families, etc. … There are about a million action points and deadlines to meet on each one. Of course, that is an exaggeration, but it is a pretty complex process affecting a lot of stakeholders. However, when the project is done and people move into their new home, it is well worth it. Favorite on-the-job moment, customer or memory: It is really difficult to name just one, but a very recent highlight would be walking into a beautiful new home with a gentleman that had been living in one of the large state-run institutions. By then, I had been working on all the details to deliver the home for over a year and he turned to me and said: “This is a nice home you have here, sir.” I said back to him, “This is your home.” When I said this he broke out into this wonderful smile. His brothers were with him and they started to pat him on the back and congratulate him. That moment still makes me tear up when I think about it. There have been a lot of moments like that over the years. Most are just very simple human moments; sharing a smile or bit of laughter with someone or being there to share a tear when someone needed it. This work can teach you what it means to be human. It’s done that for me. How many people get to say that about their job? I am really blessed that I have been afforded the opportunity to do this work. Education: I graduated from Fallsburg High School and have a BA from Marist College. Favorite movie: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was a Great movie and the book was even better. Favorite actor and/or actress: I am much more interested in people I know than I am in celebrities. Howev-

er, I do appreciate great individual performances like Nicholson in “Cuckoo’s Nest” or Kate Winslet in “The Reader,” which is another incredible film. How do you spend your spare time: I have two young children, so my wife and I spend a lot of time with them doing the things they like. In a way, being a parent allows you to see the world through a child’s eyes again and I really enjoy that. Also, I love being out in the mountains, hiking or snowshoeing. I read quite a bit, write poetry and love all kinds of music. Favorite vacation spot: I love visiting the national parks and have been to Acadia, Shenandoah, Bryce Canyon, the Grand Canyon and Zion. Family: My family is my world. My wife, Theresa, is a remarkable lady, very bright, compassionate and the love of my life. My son, Joshua, is 12 years old and my daughter, Marie, is 9. They are both awesome kids, very smart, very kind and talented. They each have made the world a more beautiful place.
