Oscar Powers Place of employment: Sullivan County BOCES. Current title and duties: Local Area Network (LAN) Technician. My current responsibilities include identifying and resolving hardware and software issues within the organization. In addition, I work as part of the team of technicians that build and maintain the computer operating system and manage various mobile and technological devices. Part of my job also includes helping various school districts within the county. BOCES offers a Telecommunications CoSer, which provides management of telecommunications services such as voice phone connections (VOIP), visual and/or highspeed data transmissions. As part of this service, I provide Level 1 support for the Eldred and Liberty School districts. Years of experience: I have worked at BOCES for the past five years. Over-

all, I have worked in the computer field for the past 17 years. Previous employment: Prior to working at BOCES, I owned an apparel company. Favorite part of your job: I love every part of my job. I think my favorite part is working with my team – we have a great IT Department at BOCES. Our group works well together and we strive to bring our systems to a level that allows our students and staff to stay on the cutting edge of technology. Favorite on-the-job moment, customer or memory: I love to help people. Seeing a happy customer gives me so much pride, which in turn has given me so many favorite on-the-job moments, but my best moments always tie back to our students. Last year I went to a first grade classroom to fix a printer. I found the problem and was able to fix the printer right away. At the moment that the printer started to print, a little kid came up to me and gave me a hug. He told me

As an experienced computer network technician, Oscar Powers helps Sullivan County BOCES stay on the cutting edge of technology.

“you helped us, you earned a hug. You really can’t beat that for the best payment. It made me realize that a simple thing, like fixing a printer, really makes a difference. Education: I have a Computer Science Degree from Camden Community College in New Jersey. While at Camden, I was on the President’s List. Favorite movie: “Dead Poet’s Society. I like how Mr. Keating works. He has unorthodox methods that opened the minds of his students, which allowed them to learn how to think for themselves.

Favorite actor: Robin Williams. How do you spend your spare time: I love working on computers, so even in my spare time I like to be on a computer. I also like to go to the movies and travel to different cities, states and other countries. Favorite vacation spot: I don’t think I actually have a favorite spot. I am happy anywhere there is sand, water, sun. Coconut trees would be nice but not indispensable. Family: I come from a big family of four brothers, two sisters, eight dogs, two cats and one mom. Civic or volunteer affiliations: Over the years, I have volunteered a great deal. I was a Boy Scout Leader for 10 years, a volunteer firefighter for five years and a volunteer at St. Christopher’s Hospital in Philadelphia. Favorite quote: My absolute favorite quote is “Carpe Diem, – “Seize the day, put very little trust in tomorrow. In other words, it is better to have one today than two tomorrows.

Mel Olsen

Mel’s Garage is located at the lower end of North Branch where Al Priebe and Mr. Chellis used to have a garage and body shop. “I remember all the kids playing in the field behind the shop when I was a kid,” Mel said. Today, in addition to Mel’s Garage, the shop is home to Nick’s Body and Fabrication, which is owned and operated by Mel’s son. “He’s really good with the body work, and he’s busy,” Mel said.

STORY AND PHOTOS BY FRED STABBERT Age: 52 Place of employment: Mel’s Garage, County Route 121, North Branch Current title and duties: Head Mechanic. I try and fix everyone’s vehicle to the best of my ability. Some days are tougher than others. Years of experience: 30 years. Mel started working as a teenager on the family farm and since then has worked at farms throughout the Beechwoods, many of which are now gone. He worked for Dick Herbert for four years and at Roche’s Garage in Callicoon for 10 years. He has had his own garage for the past 20 years. Favorite part of your job: “The customers. I enjoy the people. I’ve known them all my life.”

Favorite on-the-job memory: When I was a kid I worked for every farmer in the Beechwoods. I hate it when I read that one of them has passed away. I remember them all… Frannie Boyle, I milked his cows and did his haying. Mel remembers the hard-working generation of dairy farmers which once filled the hillsides and makes it a point to go to their farm to help them fix their equipment when he is called. Education: Mel went to truck college to be a mechanic (paid his own way) and learned a lot about repairing cars, front end work and auto body. Favorite movie: The television series “Treehouse Masters.” “How they get that stuff to hang up there in the trees is something else. I enjoy watching them build and repair the treehouses that has everything in them from kitchens to bathrooms.” Favorite actor: “I don’t watch movies much.” How do you spend your spare time: Long laugh. “What spare time.” Besides working on his treasured tractors, Mel enjoys snowmobiling – when we have snow. Favorite vacation spot: Long laugh. “I’ve taken one vacation in my life, Robin and I took the family to a water park and had a lot of fun.” Family: Wife Robin and children Kayla, Nick and Jessica. Civic or volunteer affiliations: I belonged to two snowmobile clubs, and two tractor clubs and I enjoy going to a lot of shows.

Favorite part of your job: Working with customers, trying to solve their building problems. Homeowners might want to put a small deck on their house or finish off a basement and are not sure what materials or paint to use. Contractors make up more than half of our business, and they want lumber, paint, plumbing and electrical supplies, nuts, bolts, you name it. Favorite on-the-job memory: I

think one of the funniest was the time a customer tied material to the roof of his car and tied his doors shut. He had to crawl through the window. Recently, we helped renovate the entrance lobby of the church and the choir loft, and painted the inside of the church. About 25 years ago, we put siding up on the steeple. Mark Robinson has taken his 20-plus years experience in arts education to Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.

Mark A. Robinson BY ANYA TIKKA

Age: 40 Place of employment: Bethel Woods Center for the Arts Current title and duties: Arts Education Programs Manager. Years of experience: Two years at Bethel Woods, 20 years experience working in the field of Arts Education. Previous titles with your company: Education Programs Manager – I have evolved into my current title of Arts Education Programs Manager with the growth of Bethel Woods arts programming. Favorite part of your job: My favorite part of my job is working with kids and watching their interest in the arts ignite. When a kid gains confidence, comes out of their shell, or is intrigued by some new aspect of an art form, I feel a special reward of having been a small part of their growing experience. Favorite on-the-job moment, customer or memory: My favorite on-the-job memory was the weekend Bethel Woods sponsored a Rock Poster Fair. Our whole department (Education) worked very hard to make this event happen and I really enjoyed how we came together and the synergy experienced when everyone brings their best to the table. The bonus for me was meeting artist David Byrd, who designed the original poster art for Broadway musicals such as Godspell, Follies, Hair, and Little Shop of Horrors (not to mention one of the posters for the 1969 historic Woodstock concert). Education: Bachelor of Arts in Theatre/Speech from SUNY Cortland, minors in Visual Arts and Music Favorite movie: “The Color Purple” – such a great movie about finding one’s strength, overcoming

adversity, and letting your best attributes show. Favorite actor and actress: Actor: Gary Oldman – So versatile. From movie to movie each performance is a chameleon-like change from his last. Actress: Chita Rivera – A legend of Broadway who has been in a major musical for every decade since the 1950s. How do you spend your spare time: I spend a lot of time writing reference books: I have written three: The Disney Song Encyclopedia, The Encyclopedia of Television Theme Songs, and the forthcoming two-volume set The World of Musicals, which comes out at the end of March, 2014. I enjoy going to Broadway and seeing the latest shows. Favorite vacation spot: Disney World – I would live there if I could. My dream vacation would be to tour the “haunted” castles of Great Britain. Civic or volunteer affiliations: Sullivan County GALA board member, Boys and Girls Club. Favorite quote/expression: My favorite quote is from a lyric in the musical “Sunday in the Park with George” by Stephen Sondheim. The quote is “I chose and my world was shaken. So what? The choice may have been mistaken but the choosing was not. You have to move on.” The quote is spoken to a strug-

gling artist who is trying to find the vision for his next project and it feeling bombarded by everyone’s opinions. He is stalled from fear. Art is about letting go of your fears and understanding that expression is

personal and comes from within. Right or wrong, make a choice and move on. Indifference, apathy, and fence-sitting are not useful tools to an artist.

Inspire Bravo, Mark Robinson. Yo ou are a man of many talen talents. Y us with your gift of song g and dance, and a love of the arts that you sha shar children and our community unity Congratulations to you and all the Men at Wor in Sullivan County.
