Age: 46 Where do you live: Narrowsburg Place of employment: SUNY Sullivan Current title and duties: Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs Years of experience: 20 Previous employment: Interim Senior VP of Academic Affairs, Raritan Valley Community College; Associate VP of Instruction, Spartanburg Community College Favorite part of your job: I think that the community college reform movement is trying to continue the great spirit of American reform. I believe that our work helps to break the cycle of multigenerational poverty, and preserves the ability of future generations of Americans to enjoy economic and intellectual liberty. We need to remove all of the barriers that keep students from graduating, [and]

some of those are financial, [and] some of those are emotional. A lot of those of structural problems within higher education itself and we need to propel students through the program and get them to whatever their desired outcome is. Most challenging part of the job: Change is painful in any organization. The phrase that I hear more often than any other phrase, quantitatively, is, “We’ve always done it this way, or some version thereof. And it drives me crazy in part because the world has changed, and in part because it may not ever have worked. In community colleges, in 2018, funding has changed, and the workforce is changing, and for us to remain part of the structure of Sullivan County means that we have to change. Therefore, change means that we have to focus on serving the students and PLEASE SEE POMAKOY, PAGE 16M

Age: Jeff - 57 and Mark - 60 Where do you live: Jeff - North Branch; Mark - Jeffersonville Place of employment: Jeff and Mark Peters Plumbing and Heating Current title and duties: Jeff and Mark - Plumbing and Heating Technician Years of experience: Jeff and Mark – 40 years Previous employment: Jeff - I used to be an antique auctioneer. I mean I still do antiques but that's mostly in the summer. Mark - I was in the Military, in the Marines. Favorite part of your job: Jeff - I really actually like doing boiler replacements, I'm not sure why. And I also really enjoy keeping up with our old customers. Mark - I like being able to help someone and repair something for them that maybe they can't figure out for themselves. Most challenging part of the job: Mark - I think the most challenging is the conditions that you find when you arrive to a job. You never really know what it's going to be like or what you are going to encounter. Jeff - I'd have to agree with the conditions you find, especially in the crawl spaces. And sometimes those conditions create injuries and that can be tough. Favorite on-the-job moment, customer or memory: Mark - For me it would be seeing someone that has gone without heat or water or some other plumbing problem for days, just light up once you've done your job. That satisfaction is the best feeling. Jeff - Oh geez, there's so many. So many things that when I think about them they just make me laugh. One customer we finished putting a sink in and we get a call the next day saying the sink was leaking. He showed us that when he was pouring water over the faucet it was running down the faucet, along the sides of the sink and onto the floor. It was an above the counter sink. I said to him do you know what you're doing? I said the water can't run into

the sink when you're pouring it over the faucet. It's not an under the counter sink. He stopped and looked at us and all of us burst out laughing. It was just one of those really funny moments. Education: Jeff - Delaware Valley Central School graduate; Mark Delaware Valley graduate, and I graduated from Bible college in 1986. Favorite movie: Mark - Casablanca; Jeff - Pale Rider Favorite actor and/or actress: Jeff and Mark- Clint Eastwood How do you spend your spare time: Mark - I'm actually a preacher at the Morningstar Christian Fellowship in Kingston. So every Sunday I'm there. I also travel and do some missionary work. I've been in Central America, specifically in Honduras and Nicaragua, and I've also been in Africa. Jeff - I used to be a boxer in the 80s, so eventually I started teaching. I was teaching out in Monticello. I'd love to find a facility around here that I could do that again, to give the youth something different to be a part of. I'm also a preacher at Lighthouse Ministries in Liberty. Favorite vacation spot: Mark - My wife is from Louisiana, so we spend a lot of our vacation time down there. I love the food and the climate, especially when you're trying to escape the winter here. Jeff - I love Florida. Four of my kids are there so it's great to go down and visit. I love the food. You can find anything. And the antiques... there you can find sales and good antiques every day of the week. Family: Jeff - Wife and seven children. The oldest is 37 and the youngest is 14. Mark - I'm married and have three daughters. Two of my daughters are living in New York City and my other daughter is here. Civic or volunteer affiliations: Mark and Jeff - The church. Favorite quote/words to live by: Mark - “I have come that they may have life and may have it abundantly.” John 10:10 Jeff - “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might." Matthew 22:37

Jorge Rosado STORY AND PHOTO BY PATRICIO ROBAYO Age: 53 Where do you live: I grew up in Long Island and after the Marine Corp., I moved to Ellenville. Place of employment: Rolling V Bus Corporation (South Fallsburg) Current title and duties: Manager for the Specialty Transportation Division. I arrange transportation for our clients to venues in Sullivan County and the surrounding areas in our new luxury vehicles. Our newest venture has been arranging transportation for Resorts World Catskill clients to and from the Tri-State area. My duties also include the scheduling for the transportation of guests for our wedding charter clients. Years of experience: I drove coach buses for two years before joining Rolling V and have been with them going on four years. I was also in the trucking industry prior to that for close

to 30 years as an owner and operator. My last five years in the industry, I was a co-owner of New York Best Furniture Delivery Services were we delivered to all the Rent A Centers in the Tri-State area. Previous titles with your company: I was the assistant terminal manager for two years at the Rolling V Ellenville Terminal, as well as in charge of the scheduling for the transportation of guests for our clients weddings last year. Favorite part of your job: The team work it takes from all the departments and my colleagues to accomplish the goal and make it look flawless to the client. We started from scratch and had to figure out all the logistics from management to the cleaners that keep our vehicles clean.

MARCH, 2018

Most challenging part of the job: Building this whole department from scratch. This would not have been possible without the team work we have here at Rolling V and the support of the owner Phil Vallone. Favorite on-the-job moment, customer or memory: At the moment, my favorite moment would be how my colleagues and I came together for the “soft opening” of the casino. We all worked long hours with a common goal, to give the client the “first class” service they were expecting. The team was amazing! Education (high school, college): I went to Uniondale High School in Hempstead and I did logistical training in the United State Marine Corps and I have many years in the transportation industry and life experience. Favorite movie: Convoy Favorite actor and/or actress: “The Rock” Dwayne Johnson How do you spend your spare time: With my wife, kids and granddaughter. I handle resident care and work with individuals. Years of experience: For New Hope Community about four years but have been in the field for 17 years. Previous titles with your company: I started at New Hope as a residential coordinator and was recently promoted to Senior Residential Coordinator. Previous employment: When I first came to this country from Africa I worked at Walmart as a cashier then was promoted to Customer Service Manager. I then moved on to Crystal Run where I worked for 13 years and there I started at an entry level job and worked my way up to residential coordinator. Then an opportunity opened up here in New Hope and it was close

to home, I applied and I got the job. Favorite part of your job: When people come back to New Hope to say hi and seeing people accomplish their goals. Most challenging part of the job: Staffing, it's hard to find qualified workers. We do a lot of background checks and we have high expectations for our workers. Favorite on-the-job moment, customer or memory: We lost one person we support, who was allowed to visit family in New York City and didn't come back. I went down to the city with some staff to find him. We didn't find him at first and I sent the staff back and stayed in the city with family so I could continue to find him. I went back alone to Harlem to look for him and got the police involved. It wasn't till later he was spotted in Times Square, I dropped everything and went down. When I got down to Times Square, I still couldn't find him. I kept looking around and finally found him

and was able to get him help at a local hospital and bring him back to New Hope Community. Education (high school, college): I went to primary and secondary education in Africa and was trained as a nurse. I am currently working for my Bachelors in Human Services at SUNY Empire and plan to get my Masters in Political Science.
