hen we write editorials like this one, we make sure to use the right words to describe the idea/statement we wish to get across. Sometimes this decision making process takes time. Most of the time we have that luxury. Firefighters don’t. At a moment’s notice they are called upon to help others. They could have been spending time with their kids, holding their significant other close, hanging out with close friends, maybe they were at church or attending a wedding when they’re contacted about a fire. These brave men and women put others before themselves and jump into danger without hesitation. As Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist Bill Dedman once said,

Without hesitation “Firefighters go where they're needed, sometimes ignoring the dangers even when no one is inside a burning building to be saved. On October 7 we have a small opportunity to show our appreciation for what they do for us. In Wurtsboro, one of our area’s greatest traditions, the Sullivan County Volunteer Firefighters Association Firemen’s Parade (SCVFA) marches into its 89th chapter. This year’s hosts, whose histories and

officers you can read about in this very publication, are the Wurtsboro, Bloomingburg and Summitville Fire Departments. Also in this special section, you can read about the SCVFA, and their annual brunch which was held on September 24. While you may wonder what your attendance at a parade will offer these selfless men and women, the truth is it does more than you know. Come out to the parade, cheer on our tireless firefighters and EMS volunteers, and show your support. They give so much and ask for little in return. Our encouragement goes a long way. Show them how much we care about their sacrifice and dedication in keeping us safe. We’ll be there and we hope to see you there, too!

JOSEPH ABRAHAM | DEMOCRAT

The Wurtsboro Fire Company has been serving for over a century.

T

he history of the Wurtsboro Fire Company No. 1 as we know it today, does not start in 1898 as most would imagine. Actually, the first mention of a fire department in the Village of Wurtsboro was made on Monday, May 1, 1866 at the home of Smith Henderson, whose house was located at the corner of Sullivan and Canal Streets. At this location, a regular meeting of the village trustees was held, where someone brought up the subject of fire protection for the newly incorporated village. (Wurtsboro had been incorporated on Sunday, February 19, 1866 under a special act of Legislature.) It was decided at this meeting to divide the village into three fire districts and to appoint two Fire Wardens to each district. It’s believed that the continuous ringing of the bell in the Dutch Reformed Church (now the Community Church of Wurtsboro) would be the signal for a fire, at which point, the only efforts made in firefighting was to organize a bucket brigade. Many buildings in town were lost to fire during this time period. Around the spring of 1897 a series of fires sent the village into an uproar.

A public meeting was held shortly thereafter and plans were made to engage the services of a visiting civil engineer named Nichols Van Tine, to help plan a location for a reservoir and water system. After many meetings and much discussion, it was decided to build a reservoir about one mile west of the village on the side of the mountain, and feed it from the Masten Lake brook. A water main with six hydrants was to be installed that would run from the reservoir down Sullivan Street and end at the D&H canal. The cost of the construction of this hydrant system was $7,500 and it was completed by the summer of 1898. A Fire Department is born A few months after the completion of the water main was the organizational meeting of the first fire company in the village. The name chosen for this group of volunteers was the Wurtsboro Hose Co. No.1. Wurtsboro had its factions and it was not all peace and harmony. Many people were annoyed that this group of volunteers was in the limelight. For that reason, another group of men in the village held their own meeting 12 days later and organized a second company called the Wurtsboro Hook

& Ladder Co. No. 1. Within the span of a year, Wurtsboro went from a village with no fire protection to one with a new pressurized hydrant system and not one, but two fire departments! The first fire the Wurtsboro Fire Department fought occurred at 11:30 p.m. on July 3, 1899. It was a small shed fire and was put out within ten minutes of arrival. The second fire occurred on November 12 and was a fully involved structure fire. This was a new house owned by John W. Sullivan and was located on the hill in back of the property formerly known as Blue Paradise. Shortly after these initial events, the two fire departments merged to become the Wurtsboro Fire Department. Dr. Charles W. Piper was elected as its first chief. The descendants of Dr. Piper are still members of the department to this day. October 30, 1955 marked the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the reorganized company. This was held at the Nevele Hotel & Country Club with 139 people in attendance (it’s interesting to note that it only cost $1,042.50 to feed this many people). At this dinner, the fire company officially turned over to the village the

hundreds of man hours of labor in order to keep construction costs down. The mortgage on the property was burned during a ceremony in August of 1973. The entire indebtedness had been paid in full in less than four years! On November 2, 1981, Wurtsboro became the first department in Sullivan County to accept firefighters under the age of 18 in a class called “probationary firefighters.” These 16and 17-year-old members were expected to perform all of the duties of a regular firefighter, but were not allowed in or on a burning building, could not hold a line office, and if in school, must maintain passing grades. The initial eight members sworn in that night were all sons of current members. Those members proved their worth and the program continues to this day, although the title has been changed to “apprentice firefighter.” There have been many an instance where the “regular” members have been glad the younger ones were around!

were several events that marked the 50th Anniversary of the reorganized company in 1980. By the early 1960s the company found the firehouse to be inadequate for their needs. A building committee was formed to meet with the village board and discuss the possibility of a new firehouse. With the cooperation of the village, the project was soon underway. The construction was started on July 30, 1969 and completed in the spring of 1970. The current firehouse was built on the site of the original Fireman’s Hall which was demolished prior to the start of construction. During the construction, fire apparatus was housed at the town barn (now Station 2) and company meetings were held at the American Legion home on Pine St. The dedication ceremonies took place on May 17, 1970 with Hon. Lawrence H. Cooke, Justice of the New York State Supreme Court as guest speaker. The total cost of the building was $85,000, $20,000 of which was contributed from the fire company’s private funds, along with

t’s known that two previous attempts had been made to establish a fire company in Bloomingburg, without success. However, on February 15, 1935 the

ed for eight dollars per month. While renting this small and quite inadequate truckhouse, members were constantly busy raising money toward the goal of purchasing property. They did this by having spaghetti suppers, dances, card parties, cake sales, raffles and more. After they found suitable property that was within their means, they discovered that in order to purchase the property, the company must incorporate. A Certificate of Incorporation was filed in Sullivan County on July 31, 1939. In August 1939, the reality of ownership was accomplished with a $500 down payment and a $1,000 mortgage. This property is the site of the former firehouse, now the Jeff Bank. There were four buildings on the property, two of which were stores. One store, a barn and an ice house were torn down. The remaining store, under the supervision and work of Howard Taylor, was converted into a firehouse that was used until 1964. As soon as the company was wellestablished they had thoughts of expanding from the Village to a Fire District. At the time, this was prohibited by New York State Village Law. It was discovered in the late 1950s that Chester, NY, had formed a fire district comprising the village and surrounding territory by a bill passed in

the New York State Legislature. This was all that was needed to revive the efforts of doing the same in Bloomingburg. On December 7, 1960 the Bloomingburg Joint Fire District was established. This included the village, an expanded area in the Town of Mamakating and a portion of the Town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York. The Fire Company turned over its property and equipment to the District and in return, the District would now provide necessary housing, equipment and maintenance under a tax structure. The Fire Company provides to the district, on a volunteer basis, its time, effort and training. Due to state of the art technology in today’s world, it requires ongoing training. In addition to firefighting duties, the company provides to the district other services such as cellar pump outs, extraction of victims at traffic accidents, resuscitator calls and searching for lost persons. It also provides, on a reciprocal basis, the same services to neighboring communities through the County Mutual Aid System. The officers and members will put on educational programs concerning home safety for any group that is interest. Tours of the firehouse and demonstrations of the equipment can be scheduled. In 2009 the fire company moved into the new firehouse.

Since then, twenty other Chiefs have served in that position until the present Chief, Craig Blakesley, Sr. From the hard work and dedication of the membership, Summitville Fire Department went from a one bay to the present four bay firehouse. In the beginning, Summitville purchased used equipment. Summitville currently has 27 members on their roster. Summitville still relies on their mutual aid companies to assist them in their firefighter efforts. riends, family and colleagues recently gathered at the Eagle’s Nest in Bloomingburg to celebrate the 26th annual Sullivan County Volunteer Firemen’s Association (SCVFA) brunch. SCVFA President Bill Lothrop joined with his predecessor Michael Hoyt, as well as Sullivan County Fire Coordinator John Hauschild, to honor all the association’s past presidents, as well as their firefighters of the year. The Sullivan County Volunteer Firefighters Association (SCVFA) was organized in 1926. They’ve served as a communication and interactive organization dedicated to the enhancement of the volunteer fire service throughout Sullivan County. Their mission statement is as follows... “The objects of the organization shall be the advancement, instruction and protection of the interests of the firefighters, fire companies, fire departments, and the fire service in general, throughout the County of

Sullivan; the promotion and strengthening of the bonds of unity, which shall properly exist between companies, departments, and exempt associations now existing or to be formed within said County; the encouragement of social, instructional and firematic activities among the various fire companies, departments, and the rendering of assistance and encouragement to those activities that will enhance the efficiency and the welfare of firefighters throughout Sullivan County.”

First Assistant Chief AJ Washington and Captain Shane Cunningham were able to rescue this individual from the house, but he later unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. “Needless to say, these two indi-

Finn entered an old church converted into a residence that was engulfed in flames. Another fireman unknowingly opened a trap door leading to a basement that was filled with propane gas. The gas ignited when the door was opened, lifting the entire structure four feet off the foundation. Despite sustaining injuries themselves, Arnold and Tyrone dragged their unconscious assistant chief out of the building to safety. “These are the folks who answer the call in the middle of the night, leave their son’s football game, or their wife’s anniversary to help their neighbor,” said keynote speaker, volunteer fireman and Sullivan County District Attorney Jim Farrell. “For that, Sullivan County and the State of New York are grateful. You are true credit to your community.”
