wo years ago, Monticello Fire Department Chief Scott Schoonmaker came to his members with an idea: to host the 2014 Sullivan County Volunteer Firefighters Parade. According to past chief Alan Kesten, one of the event organizers, “We quickly formed a committee and brought our plan to the county Firefighters Association.” Slated for Saturday, September 13, this year’s Parade will kick off at 2 p.m. on Broadway, in front of St. Peter’s Church. This year’s event, though, will include tons of activities for area youth, beginning with the 9 a.m. truck inspection, which will take place on Sturgis Road in the village, near the ShortLine bus terminal. It will give everyone a chance to get close to the apparatus. The parade portion of the day-long event will wind its way east on Broadway to the Monticello Fire Department on Richardson Avenue, where as Kesten related, the parade will disband. But that’s not it.

“Once the parade actually disbands, we’ll have all kinds of events at the firehouse,” explained Kesten. “We’ll have a bouncy house for the kids, we’re working on face painting, games and more... we’ll also have various vendors there and local organizations on hand, food, beverage, live music with the Slam Allen Band and even an area marching bands compeYour “Community Bank” from the Hudson Valley to the Capital Region

tition.” Monticello will be accompanied by Hudson Valley Pipe and Drum Corps; Liberty by the Liberty High School Marching Band; Bloomingburg by the Walker Valley Drum and Bugle Corps; and the Rock Hill FD by The Ed Maloney Pipe Band. Once the procession winds its way to Richardson Avenue, a marching band competition, complete with prize money will take place, accompanied by live music from band “Two Hour Delay,” from about 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. At approximately 7 p.m. over 100 trophies will be presented to the various fire departments on hand. “For the most part, every fire department will go home with something,” said Kesten. But there’s more: at nightfall, the Monticello FD will be putting on a fireworks display at Somerville Field, right down the road from the firehouse on Richardson Ave. Lauding his hometown fire department, Kesten said, “Monticello doesn’t do things small. We’re the largest Sullivan County fire department and the county seat... we handle in the range of
1,400 call per year” Added Kesten, “We’re really hoping for good weather. We think we’ve got it all figured out and the Monticello Fire Department is extremely proud to be host to the Parade... It’s gonna be special.” Shuttle buses will be available, running for all village municipal parking lots. For more information go to www.monticellofd.com

Volunteer Firefighters Association gathers to honor and celebrate
he Sullivan County Volunteer Firefighters’ Association (SCVFA) held its 55th annual dinner earlier this summer at the Villa Roma Hotel’s Clubhouse. Master of Ceremonies Richard Martinkovic steered the program through the Pledge of Allegiance before welcoming all in attendance. Martinkovic was followed by Judge Isaac “Yitz” Kantrowitz, who gave the invocation before the start of the dinner. Following the dinner, MC Martinkovic introduced guest speaker Commissioner of Jurors George Cooke, who highlighted his
pleasure at being able to thank all the Sullivan County volunteer firefighters who work hard and serve their communities. “If we ever lose volunteer firefighters the taxpayers will feel the loss,” Cooke said. “I don’t know if you’ll get anymore than a thank you, but I can tell you, from the Cooke family, we’re grateful. And we thank you very much.” Immediate past SCVFA President Craig Burkle followed Cooke, saying goodbye to his position and receiving a Certificate of Achievement from Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther. “It’s been a very enjoyable ride and I hate to see it go, but it’s time to depart,” Burkle said while thanking his fellow firefighters and his wife Cynthia. n April of 1874, the Village of Monticello was visited by a major fire, which destroyed the Exchange Hotel, Hindley’s Saloon, Kent’s Barber Shop, and the Republican Watchman newspaper office, Billing’s Flour and Feed Store and Curley’s Hotel. This fire, more than anything else, was the likely impetus for the formation of the Monticello Fire Department. Prior to this, bucket brigades were used to fight fires in the village and they had proven inadequate. On March 8, 1875, the Monticello Fire Department was organized with 82 charter members. Friend W. Johnson was appointed chief engineer on June 30, 1875 and John F. Tymeson was appointed chief engineer on August 23, 1875. The Fire Company at the time was made up of two companies: the Neptune Engine Company and the Mountain Hose Company. On February 26, 1876 the Rescue Hook and Ladder Company was formed with 124 members, none of which belonged to the two other

postmasters, local business owners and operators and regular working people. The department has instituted a junior firefighter program, which is currently in its seventeenth year. High School young adults 16 – 18 years of age are eligible for this program. “Juniors” are trained in firefighting and can become full members at the age of 18. The Monticello Fire Department has a long and colorful history from 1875 to the present. This is a brief overview of that history. The Department maintains a Museum in the Fire House on Richardson Avenue which is open to the public and contains memorabilia and photographs from the early days through current events.

Mass Casualty Incident Drill:
Summitville FD prepares for the worst STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARGARET BRUETSCH
T
he Summitville Volunteer Fire Department ran its first Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) Emergency Drill this summer. The emergency incident took place at the intersection of Firehouse Rd. and Depot Rd. just past the firehouse. The staged accident involved a school bus, donated by Rolling V Bus Company, filled with kids and chaperones, and two passenger cars. The drill was more than just a practice run for any real life MCI, it was also a chance to show how hard the volunteer firefighters in the area work to make sure they’re ready to act when an emergency arises. “It’s just some publicity for the Fire Departments,” Summitville Fire Chief Tim Koestler said regarding the
“There were a few glitches, but that’s what we’re here for.” Tim Koestler Summitville Fire Chief |
drill. “This is what volunteer fire departments do.” The sirens went off at the firehouse at 9:15 a.m. and the Summitville firefighters wasted no time springing into action and quickly arriving on the scene. Once the accident was declared an MCI, surrounding area emergency services arrived, including the Mamakating First Aid Squad, the Wurtsboro Fire Department, Rock Hill Ambulance, and both the Ellenville Fire Department and Ellenville First Aid & Rescue Squad.
Firefighters are usually the first responders to accidents, and in this simulation, prepare to move injured victims from the car in the background. The firefighter in the foreground prepares to cut through metal – necessary when a wreck makes extraction difficult.
WE THANK ALL
our emergency personnel for their dedication to our communities and endless hours of commitment.

A firefighter and an emergency medical technician (EMT) work in tandem near the bus.
Although it was only a drill, it was pure chaos. Victims moaned and groaned as firefighters and emergency medical personnel worked to free them from vehicles and care for their injuries at the on site triage station. Windshields were smashed, doors were taken off and victims were rushed to receive the care they needCONTINUED ON PAGE 34F
The mass casualty drill is made as realistic as possible. A “pre-wrecked” car serves as a good simulator of what emergency responders will face at real incidents, and they get to practice working on victims in difficult confines.

ABOVE: Firefighters use a “Jaws of Life,” a trademarked name for an hydraulic rescue tool which comes in a number of variations and helps extract victims of mangled wrecks by forcing open and even cutting metal. RIGHT: Rescuers tend to a victim. The trend in firematics is to have firefighters trained as EMTs. With volunteer ambulance services facing declining membership for a variety of reasons, fire departments often go out on medical calls and usually have jurisdictional authority at an accident scene.

ed. In the end, the drill was a success and the firefighters quickly worked to clean up the emergency area before heading back to the station. “It went awesome,” Chief Koestler said afterward. “There were a few glitches, but that’s what we’re here
for. Everything went really well, the EMS did great, the fire department did great. This is why volunteers – why we – train all the time.” And while this may have been the first Emergency Drill for Summitville, Chief Koestler hopes to have another drill soon. “Probably not until next year or maybe in the fall,” he said.
