Liberty F.D. a true community organization

he Liberty Fire Department is celebrating 145 years of service to the community by hosting the 87th Annual Sullivan County Volunteer Firefighters Assn. Parade next Saturday, August 1. It is a huge undertaking for any group – especially firemen – to host a parade steeped in such history and tradition. Firemen and It is not often that we truly emergency personnel from the entire Hudson Valley will be reprepause to thank our volunteer sented at this parade, marching proudly down Main Street, Liberty firemen for all they do for as parade goers show their admiration with applause. our community. It is not often that we truly pause to thank our volunteer firemen for all they do for our community. They are certainly the first ones we think of when an emergency happens in our home or community and they respond faithfully and professionally, as Liberty Fire Dept. has done for the past 145 years. This one department, of which there are over 40 in Sullivan County, has responded to nearly 100,000 emergencies in its histo-

T

ry, with little fanfare and hardly any notice. We would like to applaud their efforts for helping to make our communities safe and for helping so many people in their time of need. Their selfless acts of courage have saved lives, saved property from damage and protected their fellow community members from hurricanes, floods, fires and the other ravages of Mother Nature. And might we add that our firemen are some of the best trained and most devoted firemen in New York State. Sullivan County has long been regarded as a leader in training and dedication to the volunteer firemen ranks and we proudly say that our departments have handled some of the worst disasters with great expertise. The fire departments of our area also work closely with the ambulance corpsmembers, who are also on the top of the list of dedicated volunteers, ready to step up any time of day or night to save a life and comfort those who need their help the most. These humble and caring individuals – like their firefighter brethren – need many hours of training and practice to hone their skills in case they are called upon to help. We hope the community will respond on Saturday, August 1 and turn out for the Annual Firemen’s Parade to say thank you to the thousands of volunteers who keep us all safe and sound.

the SCVFA’s parent organization the Hudson Valley Volunteer Firefighters’ Association, as well as members of the SCVFA who have received the HVVFA’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Legislator Kathy LaBuda and Chairman Samuelson also presented the SCVFA with a Legislative Proclamation passed in May. The proclamation recognized not only the many different Sullivan County Fire Departments, but also thanked all those fire departments that responded to the Shawangunk Ridge forest fire. Following the acceptance of the Legislative Proclamation, Judge Kantrowitz inducted the newest SCVFA officers. New SCVFA President Ralph Hornbeck has been a firefighter for over 40 years and is the current Chief of the Neversink Fire Department. “I hope to continue the relation between our association with organizations in Sullivan County and throughout the state because this association is number one,” Hornbeck said after thanking his wife and family for their support of his involvement, “This association is one large family that supports each other.” 20348

The SCVFA’s past presidents gathered for the traditional group picture. Front row, from left: Ralph LaVecchia, Frank LaBuda, Isaac Kantrowitz, Barry Herzbrun, Dick Sturdevant, and Nelson Durland. Back row: Mark Meddaugh, Don Sherwood, Bill Lothrop, Richard Martinkovic, Craig Burkle, Michael Hoyt, Peter Maltese, Chuck Kinne, Roy Worden, Chet Smith, and John Cassidy Jr. See a complete list of past presidents on page 16F.

FIREMEN’S PARADE

SULLIVAN COUNTY DEMOCRAT

JULY 24, 2015

The origins of the Liberty Fire Department Courtesy http://www.libertyfd.com ne cold winter night, February fifteenth, in the year Eighteen Fifty-Seven, a fire occurred in Liberty which, in a great way, was responsible for the start of the Liberty Fire Department. Quinlan's "History of Sullivan" tells us that a professional burglar, named Levi Rogers, entered the store of Clements and Messiter, and after removing some of the contents, set fire to the building. Evidence found in the ruins let to Roger's arrest and conviction. Two other buildings were also burned in the fire.

O

Shortly after this fire, before 1861, two fire companies were formed: Watkins Engine Co. No. 1 (J.C Young) and B.W Winner Hook and Ladder Co. No. 2 (Hose & Truck). Dr. John D. Watkins, who owned the property now occupied by the O. E. Kellers, purchased a second-hand pump from a private hose company in New York City for $325 and presented it to Co. No. 1. The Winner Co. raised the money and ordered a ladder wagon with twenty buckets. This equipment was made in Liberty by Lamoreaox Brothers and served the Winner Company so well that it was

only taken out of service in 1925 when a Packard chassis with Pirsch ladder was purchased by the Village. We know very little about the operation of these units until the incorporation of the Village in September 1870. The only two companies then active were the Hollock Hose Co., now J.C. Young Company No. 1 and Liberty Hose & Truck Company No. 2, both located on or near Main Street. Both companies had only handdrawn equipment. There was considerable delay before they arrived at a fire on the hill in the station area. The streets then were unpaved and some-

times knee deep in mud and in the winter it was worse because the snow was deep. A group of men living on the hill saw a necessity to having some fire protection and decided to do something about it. On the night of January 15, 1901, fifteen of these men met and founded the Ontario Hose Company No. 3. They then acquired a hose cart or jumper, which was a twowheeled card carrying 500 feet of 2½inch hose, two open nozzles, a hydrant wrench and a few spanners. From that time on the Liberty Fire Department was made up of three companies that still exist today as the Liberty Joint Fire District with the firehouse located at 256 Sprague Ave., Liberty.

SCVFA officers and dignitaries typically observe the parade from an elevated platform which, in last year’s parade, also featured a needed tent to shed the rain! You won’t find parade judges on this platform, however, as they stand directly along the parade route to accurately assess the presentation of the marchers and their equipment.

Monticello firefighters get tips on saving pets Fire Department gets a visit from the vet Monticello FD will make it easier to treat these animals. Members of the Monticello Police Department K-9 Unit also attended to learn more about the dogs who are constant companions. “I like to have people informed and I like to teach, and a little community outreach helps to give better information,” explained Dr. D’Abbraccio who owns Catskill Veterinary Services, a mobile service based in Monticello. The 2006 graduate of Monticello HS has been a vet for over three years and mainly visits sick pets in their homes but also provides medical and surgical services at the Wurtsboro Veterinary Clinic. Not only did Dr. D’Abbraccio detail ways to treat animals in emergencies, but he also elaborated on many simple household items that can harm pets, some of which may surprise most pet owners.

The newly donated SurgiVet oxygen masks are specially shaped to fit over the mouth of cats and dogs. They will be added to the Monticello Fire Department’s emergency equipment on their fire trucks.

Chocolate is a commonly known toxin for dogs, but many people are unaware that hand lotion, ibuprofen and even grapes can cause harm to dogs as well. Similarly, those beautiful Easter lilies or poinsettias can be poisonous to cats if they eat or come

in contact with them. During these hot summer months, cats and dogs overheating is also a common issue, especially when left in unattended cars. CONTINUED ON PAGE 31F

MONTICELLO — Pet owners can rest assured their companions will be safer after the Monticello Fire Department received a visit from the vet recently. Veterinarian Joseph D’Abbraccio went to the Monticello Firehouse to donate new pet technology and to give a presentation on what can harm animals – and not just in fires – and the best ways to help them if they do get into trouble. The presentation was put together as an outreach for animal owners with the help of Dr. D’Abbraccio’s brother, Mike, who is a fireman in Monticello. A dog or cat may be the first to leap out of a burning home and the new SurgiVet oxygen masks Dr. D’Abbraccio donated to the

If any pet owner is concerned about what their little companion has eaten or come into contact with, the best option is to take them to a veterinarian. For cats and dogs, a trip to the vet could save their lives. After the vet finished his presentation, Matt Rohner of the Monticello PD’s K-9 Unit helped his dog Decca onto the table to demonstrate how the newly donated oxygen masks can be used. The oxygen masks can be easily connected to an oxygen tank but the mask portion is designed specially to fit over the mouths of canine and feline friends. Dr. D’Abbraccio is hoping to put together similar outreach presentations for other fire departments in the county as well. As for this first one, the Monticello Fire Department members greatly appreciated the new tools and information. “In the course of what we do we come across animals and this gives us a set of tools to better serve the community,” stated ex-chief Alan Kesten. “We never know when we get to save a life and that may now be a dog’s life.”

From left, Assistant Chief A.J. Washington, Monticello Fire Department Chief Scott Schoonmaker, Veterinarian Joseph D’Abbraccio and Monticello Police K-9 Unit officer Matt Rohner smile for a photo after the Fire Department received the new oxygen masks.
