espite two key losses to graduation, new Eldred Head Football Coach Mike Hoover is optimistic about the upcoming season. “We lost several seniors, including Andrew Margorum and RJ Field, who are playing college football at Hartwick College this year. They provided leadership to our team. “Our goal is to stay together and win Section IX. We have a strong group of players that have several years of experience.” Out of those, he mentioned two talented and experienced seniors, Nik Dilles and Julian Gottlieb. Juniors Nick Warren, Nick Banghart, and Taylor Warren should provide leadership as well. The offensive line is anchored by veterans Alex Negulici and Andrew Kougher. Coach Hoover concluded by saying, “We have a dedicated group of players who are going to play hard.” Assistant coaches for Coach Hoover are Pat Kean, Tracy Margarum, and Rick Dilles.

the school’s physical education teacher. He talked to the Democrat prior to the season about his thoughts and expectations for the coming season. “We lost seven seniors from last year’s team to graduation,” he recounted. “Out of those, we lost a big chunk of our defense and some scoring. What we mainly lost was the leadership the seniors from last year brought to the team.” Coach Gass said that despite the losses, he believes in the team. And although there’s a mix of experienced and newer players in the team, he said he’s aiming high. “So far we have shown the ability to play together as a team, and if we continue to do this, the expectations are very high. Making the section tournament is our goal because once you get into the tournament anything can happen,” he commented. He thinks there’s enough talent for the school to do well, explaining, “This year we have a good blend of young and seasoned players.” He concluded by saying that some of the key players returning to this year’s team are Jenna Burns, Angie Schadt, Rebecca Morgan, Shannon Brucher, Melissa McMonagle, and Lyndzee Kelty.

ldred boys’ soccer coach Sonia Kidney is busy training this year’s team. Boys’ soccer is gaining in popularity and there was a record sign-up this year. “The Eldred boys’ soccer program has grown this year,” said coach Kidney. “We have the most boys we have ever had.” Several players were lost to graduation from last year’s team, but there is a mixture of seasoned players and newcomers to keep an eye on. “Watch out for Peter Vorstadt, Francesco Meredino, and Sebastian Schadt. We have an awesome team on defense as well,” Kidney commented. She ended by saying, “With 28 players, we are hoping to have a successful season. The team is young with only six seniors to lead them.”

The key players this year are returning seniors Ami Calo and Farrah Mills. Ami will no longer be the goalie but on the field to help lead the team. iberty coach John Wilhelm maintains the same goal each and every season for his Indians squad: “Get back to the playoffs.” Last season Liberty finished 6-4 (31) Class C Division I and lost the Section IX championship game against league foe James I. O’Neill. But the Indians have suffered some very key losses to graduation. Those losses include the do-it-all Ryan Henry – the Sullivan County Democrat’s Player of the Year last season – and a host of other impact players like running back Kenny Jaycox; defensive end Tony Saravia; linebacker Andrew Martinez and cornerback Atwoun Ackerley. So has Wilhelm’s goal changed this season? “No way.” With a strong roster of returning athletes, including senior double threat quarterback Quinn Jackson, senior defensive lineman Julius Graves, running back Jericho Male, sophomore running back and linebacker Kevin Morgans and more, Wilhelm has a strong core to work with in a decidedly tough division. A surprise addition, though, may be a boon to the Indians: that of former Fallsburg tailback Shakree Gibson, who led all Sullivan County rushers with 1,039-yards on just 124 carries; an impressive 8.4-yard-per-carry average for a Fallsburg team that, in its third year of existence won its first ever contest last season. “I’m excited to see what we can do out there,” says Wilhelm. “I think we’ve got a great chance to compete again in Class C.”

he boys’ soccer team started last season with a bang, going 5-0 and riding this momentum to sectionals, where it suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Spackenkill. “We definitely had a sold 2012 season, said coach Debbie Simpson. Though the team lost eight seniors from last year’s squad to graduation, including star striker Pedro Garcia – now playing at SUNY Orange – Simpson says, “We’ve got a few newcomers who I think will go a long ways toward rounding us out as a team. One key player who will be back on the field for the Indians this season is senior goalkeeper Julian Spina, who dominated in the net last season. Added Simpson, “We have an energetic team that works well together and hard in practice. We are looking to be competitive in all our games, have a winning season, and hopefully earn a repeat trip to sectional play.

Lady Indian booters loaded with upperclassmen BY ELI RUIZ

T

he Liberty girls’ soccer squad finished with a more than respectable 9-5-1 overall record last season, the highlight of which, said coach Ann Ramos, “Had to be our 6-4 win over John S. Burke Catholic in our final home match last season. It was a league match and against a longtime rival… It was huge for us”. The team saw five seniors depart from last year’s iteration, and Ramos admitted,

“This will be a rebuilding year in some respects.” With six seniors – led by team captains Melissa Symanski and Jayco Krebs – and six juniors returning, along with the addition of seven underclassmen to bolster the team’s core, the 2013 Lady Indians may have some surprises in store for the competition. “We’re just looking to come out and compete and get better each match as the season progresses,” added Ramos.

MONTICELLO — After losing five seniors to graduation last year, the Monticello varsity girls soccer team is ready to bounce back harder and faster than before. Head coach Louis Velasco and the girls only have one thing on their mind for the season and that’s making sectionals.

With captains and seniors Mara Resnick and Katrina Zicot leading the team they expect nothing less than victory. Kicking this season off with a win against Sullivan West wasn’t a bad way to start either. There are over 20 girls on the team and, with strength in numbers, the Lady Panthers should have no problem carrying themselves to sections for the second year in a row.

Monticello looks to overcome disappointing football season BY KAYLA GRECO

MONTICELLO — After a rough season last year, The Monticello varsity football team is prepared to redeem themselves after their 2-7 record last year. Last year was also Monticello’s first year not making sectionals since the football program was brought back in 2008. The loss of the team’s senior captains Jake McLachlan and Mistah Alli will definitely prove to be difficult but not impossible. Leading this year’s squad are captains Terry Duncan, Jonathan Harned, Courtney “CJ” Forest and London Gandy and although the Panthers have a young team, it is packed with determination and talent. With optional practices and weight training going on all year, Head Coach Matthew Buddenhagen is also making sure his team is top condition for game time.

lot depends on how much we improve,” Sullivan West Head Coach Ron Bauer said in assessing this year’s Sullivan West Bulldog football squad. “We have a tough schedule and some people need to step up to replace a few of the kids we lost [to graduation].” Replacing Sawyer Erlwein (QB, LB) is the first task at hand and currently Junior Richard Shevak looks to be stepping into that role. Also lost to graduation was a handful of linemen, including Scott Herbert, Scott Erdman, Blane Reddish and Joe Schroeder. Wide out Brad Hemmer also went on to college. Coach Bauer is counting on the seniors and juniors to fill the void left by those players. “We have a lot of good athletes who need to step up and get the job

done,” he said. Senior Jared Meola anchored the running game last season and was also a double threat returning kickoffs and punts. Other seniors include lineman Devin Mirch, tight ends Cody Franskevicz and Zach O’Connor, Jake Murphy and running back/lineman Travis Roeder. Juniors who should contribute this year include tackle Anthony Rydell, running back Andrew Stabbert, and two-way linemen Sean and Kevin Hart. “It’s going to be a tough season,” Coach Bauer said. “We have

Sullivan West looks to rebuild

BY FRED STABBERT III

W

ith just 16 players on the varsity soccer squad, Head Coach Debbie Owen said, “It’s definitely a rebuilding year.” In fact, Sullivan West incorporated the jayvee and varsity squads together in order to field a team. “We only have two seniors, Gavin Owen and Owen Andrews,” she said. “We have a lot of juniors who haven’t been with us before.” Coming off an 8-9 season last year, which saw the Bulldogs make the sectionals, Owen said the team was hurt by graduation, losing Richard Lander, Eli Vaknin, Greg Stevenson, Andrew Siegel, Adam Murphy and Ryan Feeney. Sullivan West will compete in Division IV, Class B with John S. Burke, James I. O’Neill, Liberty and Fallsburg central schools.

e should be pretty good,” Head Coach Michael Ellmauer said of his 2013 Lady Bulldogs. “The girls are working hard… and we are using a new system.” Fresh off the Jane Flannery Tournament in Downsville, the Lady Bulldogs lost to Roscoe in the first round and then came back to beat Walton for a third place finish. “We are stressing conditioning as well as skills,” Ellmauer said. “The numbers are nice, we have a lot of girls out this year. “We are not the biggest team, but maybe the quickest.” Ellmauer said the team would be led by seniors Mary Ann Durkin, Hayley Puerschner, Krista Herbert and Jasmine Davis. Carly Grishaber, who had a breakaway goal versus Roscoe, is also a threat as well as Jasmina Mujanovic. “And senior Syndey Sipple will help,” Ellmauer said.

ri-Valley was a pesky, tough competitor in last season finishing 4-5 overall and 2-2 in Class C Division II. Coach John Rusin is back for his eighth year at the Bear’s helm to lead a team that’s lost key players, at very key spots. Offensive lineman/defensive tackle Eric Boyes, who was an all-section pick is gone, as are fullback Brenden Tierney; tailback Cody Exner, offensive lineman John Anzano and quarterback Shatik Smith. Fortunately Rusin has some strong athletes who saw quite a bit of time on the field returning; ball players like junior halfback/cornerback Justin Swarthout who will be lining up under the center this season. TriValley also returns hard-running fullback, senior Jesus Lozada, junior tailback Jared James and line specialist, junior Donovan Flores. Another player to watch – and who, as an eighth-grader last season, played some tough football – is freshman offensive lineman/defensive lineman Everett Nolan. If you didn’t see many seniors on that list that’s because there aren’t many. “We’re a very young team,” offered Rusin. And after an early season 34-15 loss to Division I Onteora, it looks to be a rebuilding year for the Bears. “We’re going to go out there and play better each and every game,” said Rusin. “Less than that would be unacceptable.”
