Ed and Judy Van Put will do a Power Point presentation about the art found in fly-fishing. There are many beautiful landscape paintings of rivers and of trout. It focuses primarily on the artists from the Hudson River School of Landscape Painters, including Winslow Homer, Louis Rhead and William Schaldach.

Your catch rate will inflate with the right lures and bait

rank Gorshin, who played comic book villian the Riddler in the original Batman TV series once used the phrase, “The finer the bait, the shorter the wait.” Now while his character likely wasn’t using this phrase in association with fishing, it would very well make sense. Having the right bait and lures is essential to a successful day on the water.

Bob Milling, co-owner of Liberty Agway Home and Garden, has been fishing for decades.

He summed up the importance of good bait and lure by saying if you don’t have bait and lures, “You ain’t going to catch nothing,” while adding that having the wrong ones means, “you’re definitively not catching anything.”

Milling explains that in order to catch trout, in terms of bait and lures, you need something small.

He noted that a common mistake by fishermen is buying a bunch of nightcrawlers or bait which is way too big.

Another common mistake is when fishermen walk right out to the fishing hole. Trout have incredible eyesight and will notice you approach them. Milling says the best way to approach the fishing hole is to crouch down and sneak up to it.

“It’s those simple mistakes that make all the difference, with people coming home with a stringer of trout or nothing at all,” Milling said.

He also says when you go and fish for trout in larger streams or rivers, smaller lures are your best bet. Milling recommended using a Phoebe or Mepps #1 Silver.

Fishing tips can also be found on the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) website.

For example, they say good artificial lures to try are, “small spinners, spoons, jigs, stickbaits, and plastics (like 1-2" tube jigs and twister tails). If using spinners and spoons, a small ball bearing snap swivel will help avoid line twist.”

In terms of which natural baits work for trout, the NYSDEC says, “... worms, fish eggs, grasshoppers, salted or live minnows, corn, maggots and small marshmallows.”

It’s important before your fishing trip, to check current fishing regulations as some areas restrict the use of natural or live bait.

Other bait tips from the NYSDEC are as follows... “Worms should be hooked once or twice, leaving a trailing tail that undulates in the water and helps attract fish. However, if fish are just nipping off this tail section, try a smaller piece of worm. Good hook sizes range from size 6 to 10, depending on the size of the bait being used. Use as little weight as possi-

The NYSDEC also explains another option, artificial baits which are made of natural ingredients. They are biodegradable and available in a variety of shapes and styles like worms, nuggets, maggots and twister tails.

ly fishermen have a long way to go to surpass the fishing available on the Upper Delaware River. It is an entomologist’s dream. The New York-Pennsylvania border river flows on the southern flanks of the Catskill Mountains harboring countless insects which are the staple of the trout’s diet.

The fish are scattered throughout its riffles and pools, showing themselves during the hatching rituals of dancing mayflies and skittering caddis. During the time of hatching activity the river is a happy hunting ground for fly anglers.

There are about 73 miles of world-class trout 12 T RO U T

fishing on The Upper Delaware River system.

It includes the West Branch; East Branch and main stem of the river. Each one differs in flow and characteristics. The West Branch is the most popular Upper Delaware fly fishing destination as it supports a higher density of trout.

Because of its close proximity to the New York City-owned Cannonsville dam, the cold bottom releases create a year round fishery on most of its reaches.

The East Branch flows are dictated by the releases from Pepacton Reservoir. The first 10 miles of the river are reminiscent of a spring creek with gentle winding flows until it meets the famed Beaverkill River. The additional volume of water from the Beaverkill expands the size of the East Branch that features classic free-flowing rhythms until it reaches the confluence with the West Branch to form the main stem near the village of Hancock.

It is said that trout don’t live in ugly places.

Along the Upper Delaware corridor is home to many birds and animals that include bald eagle, osprey, deer and bear to name just a few. Often the wildlife can be seen feeding and browsing along the river during the day and evening hours.

The trout in the Delaware are not ordinary nor are they stocked. The wild rainbow and brown, introduced during the past century, adapted to its surroundings and annually reproduce in its branches and tributaries. The extraordinary food source allows the fish to grow to exceptional sizes and catching a 20inch fish is not uncommon. These trophysized trout are what anglers dream about, and when they do catch one, it becomes a memory to be cherished for a lifetime.

I

n 1963, Fred D. Shaver took a chance and threw in the towel on the dairy cow life to set his eyes on trout, giving life to the Beaverkill Trout Hatchery.

Now, more than five decades later, that chance he took is perhaps one of the oldest and largest private trout hatcheries in New York state, and is still proudly owned and

operated by the Shaver family for five generations.

“Fred Shaver was our great-grandfather,” said Sherry Shaver, walking alongside cousin and family business partner Frank Shaver. “We grew up right here on the family farm and when it came time it was just natural for us to keep the hatchery going,

The vats holding the baby trout have to be cleaned each morning so that no bacteria or muck builds up that may endanger the fish. to keep it in the family, because it has a future.

“We used to be the ones riding around with our fathers and grandfather on the fish deliveries,” Sherry continued, “so a lot of our customers have been with us for forty or more years.”

Located in the beautiful back woods of Livingston Manor, the hatchery is a working, running business whether it’s summer or winter.

“The work doesn’t stop just because there’s a foot of snow outside or because the trout ponds are frozen over,” said Sherry. “The trout need to be fed, the vats that hold the babies need to be cleaned, trout have to be moved as they grow in size.

It’s an everyday job.”

“And we still have customers in winter,” added Frank. “We have restaurant orders for a lot of places here in Sullivan County, so some days we’ve got to carve a block of ice out with a chainsaw and get in there to get the fish.”

According to Sherry and Frank, during the winter off season, the hatchery was completely closed. The work at the Beaverkill Trout Hatchery was to feed and maintain the fish, but the current demand from restaurants has now made it so Spring 2018

they’re able to continue with deliveries and orders year ‘round.

The hatchery fulfills both live stocking orders and restaurant orders for places all over New York state from Buffalo to New York City, as well as New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut.

To do live stock delivery they have special trucks with two large tanks on the back, each containing two compartments inside. Depending on the size of the trout being delivered, they can transport anywhere from 500 to 1,000 trout in just one truck. And they have three.

“So when we get to where we’re delivering live fish for stocking, Frank will count fish off into a bucket and then the people are responsible for carrying those fish,” explained Sherry, “and putting them in the stream, their pond, their lake, or wherever they’re going.”

One of the more taxing parts of the job is that each and every fish is caught and then hand measured to make sure they’re the right size for the job, and if they’re not, they’re thrown back. If it’s a restaurant order, they then move the fish inside to be cleaned, de-boned, and filleted.

“We stock Rainbow, Golden Rainbow, Brown, Brook, and Tiger Trout,” said Frank.

“And here we have a fish and pay pond,” said Sherry, pointing to a large pond to the right of the fish ponds, completely frozen over where their two rescue dogs, Jess and Rupert, were playing and rolling in the snow. “That will be open in just a couple of weeks on April 1 and be open all year until about Labor Day.” They also have a roadside stand that will open the same day, and interested visitors or customers are welcome to stop by and have a look around the hatchery. LOST STREAM MAP The STREAM & LAKE MAP OF NEW YORK resembles another map-known to Pennsylvania anglers as the “Lost Stream Map.” It was completed in 1965 after a 30 year effort by Howard Higbee, a former Penn State Professor.

Professor Higbee painstakingly plotted by hand, the location of 45,000 miles of streams onto the map. It sold extremely well - until the printer declared bankruptcy and hauled Higbee’s work to the landfill.

But reprints were impossible because the maps were printed in non-photographic blue. Higbee was even offered $400 for one of his last maps. And state agencies were forced to keep their copies under lock and key.

Then, at the age of 91, Howard Higbee’s dream came true.

Computers made it possible to reprint the map.

Then the STREAM & LAKE MAP OF NEW YORK was created.
