BY JOHN CROTTY, DIRECTOR SULLIVAN COUNTY VETERANS SERVICE AGENCY
Son of Calvin and Billie Waterton of Kiamesha Lake. He is a Monticello Class of 2017 graduate. He ran cross country and indoor and outdoor track for Monticello. He is an Eagle Scout from Boy Scout Troop 101 in Rock Hill, NY. William is a Lance Corporal in United States Marine Corps and currently stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii at the Kaneohe base
He is currently serving with the 1569th Transportation Company of the New York Army National Guard stationed at Stewart Air Base in Newburgh, NY. He has served for almost 21 years and responded to 9/11, the COVID emergency in NYC in the spring as well as deployed a year to Afghanistan.
There are heroes among us. They are family members, neighbors, faces in a store. They wear caps, patches or pins. They can be bigger than life or modest souls. They may have followed a later calling for law enforcement, fire or EMS. They may be school board members, teachers, lawyers or doctors. They may be loggers, farmers or store clerks. They are people who took an oath of enlistment or an officer’s oath of service. They made an irrevocable pledge to support and defend the Constitution. They committed themselves to service supporting an ideal. They served where directed around the world. They served on lonely posts or parts of divisions. They saw direct combat or were deep underground in a high-security command center. They performed their duties because it was the right thing to do. They still believe in duty and service. They are Veterans. The Federal definition reads: “A person who served in the active military, naval, or air service and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. Without our Veterans, our Nation would cease to be.
