“It is no secret that in recent years the fair’s concert venues have proven to be the launching point for some of country music’s rising stars such as Justin Moore and Jake Owens,” stated a press release. “This year will be no different. With hit singles under their belts such as ‘Keep Them Kisses Comin’ and ‘Outta My Head’ by Craig Campbell and ‘Friday Nights’ and ‘Song about a Girl’ by Eric Paslay, these two artists are sure to put on a show like you’ve never seen before at the WCF. Not one, but two popular artists playing songs and interacting with the crowd for one night only.” Tickets are on sale now via the website. Fairgoers will also have to pay extra for another perennial Grandstand favorite: the world-famous KSR Monster Truck Show, on two nights: Thursday, August 7 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, August 9 at 7:30 p.m. Thursday’s show will feature Jim

Kramer coming back to drive the new Odyssey battery-operated Big Foot in an epic race with local favorite XPD, which is powered by diesel. Saturday will be a “Freestyle” show featuring Megasaurus. o put things in perspective, the Civil War was in its second bloody year when the first Wayne County Fair was organized. And though time has wrought inevitable changes, the fair, with its many links to our agricultural past, always delivers on its promise of family-friendly entertainment at reasonable prices. “It never gets old,” said longtime Fair President Roger Dirlam, who also heads up the sponsoring organization, the Wayne County Cooperative Agricultural Society. Dirlam, his fellow board members and more than 200 volunteers have spent months preparing for the 152nd edition, which begins next Friday, August 1, and runs through Saturday, August 9. The fair is the only place to experience traditional, but rarely seen events such as horse and truck and tractor pulls, as well as the ever popular Demolition Derby (Friday, August 1 at 7:30 p.m.) Though the Small Stage will showcase a range of musical talents and styles, country music remains the traditional big ticket item at the Grandstand. Highlighting this year’s fair is the concert on Monday, August 4 with country music stars Craig Campbell and special guest Eric Paslay.

especially livestock judging and sales. A variety of other farm and non-farm animals are exhibited for close inspection and interaction. On the Midway, there will be rides and foods galore, as well as merchandise. Rides go from the gentle to the thrilling, and best of all, they are free with paid admission. Dirlam said the fairgrounds will have additional parking, and a new three-lane bridge at the entryway on Route 191 will make it easier to egress. As usual, a bevy of volunteers will direct vehicles to the available slots and tractor-pulled hay wagons will shuttle people to the gate. “Where can you go and for $8 ride the rides from noon to 11 p.m.? It’s a heck of a bang for your buck!” concluded Dirlam.

At the Midway All Through the Fair:

Kid Davie’s mix of balancing acts, magic and mime

his year’s Wayne County Fair visitors will be wowed by the entertainment and performance skills of “Kid” Davie as he strolls the Midway throughout all nine August days. Davie has been a performer and entertainer since he was 4 months old and featured in the Chicago Tribune standing in his father’s hand. With a strong natural balance, Davie has since expanded his repertoire to include stilt walking, ball walking and slack rope walking. A 30-year entertainment veteran Davie also studied the magic of Houdini and Blackstone as well as the art of mime. After years of practice Davie is a master of entertainment, showing off his talents in

all three areas. Davie has performed in Canada, Japan, various United States fairs – both State and County – as well as countless schools. On TV Davie has been featured on “The Late Show with David Letterman” and his own television show “Kidders Cartoon Castle.” A multi-talented individual with an outgoing personality that allows him to establish rapport with audiences of all ages, Davie is sure to astound those visiting the Fair this summer. County agriculture as a teacher and county agriculture supervisor, the first person to hold that position in the county. One of the requirements of that position was to visit the students at their farms, checking their projects such as chickens, cows and gardens. In the process, he became acquainted with hundreds of farm parents. As the parents acquired the latest in farming implements, they needed to discard the old. Park began collecting these discarded farm tools and machines and stored them in his house. Thus began the process that would later result in the Farm Museum. Park retired in 1956, allowing time to pursue volunteer activities. He

had been a board member of the Fair Association for many years and was a founding member of the Wayne County Historical Society. Working through both organizations, he launched his long time dream of having a Farm Museum, a place to showcase farm implements from the farmers of Wayne County. The rest is history! Wayne County honors the memory of Joseph B. Park, who lived and worked among the county farmers. He had the vision of having a place where future generations could view and learn about Wayne County’s farming history. His vision was realized during his lifetime.

Up and coming Craig Campbell hits stage BY MARGARET BRUETSCH

C

ountry singer-songwriter Craig Campbell has released two CDs: his debut, “Craig Campbell in 2011 and sophomore album “Never Regret in 2013. With an upbringing centered around respect in rural Georgia, Campbell credits his deep country roots and work ethic with the success of his music including hit singles “Fish, “Outta My Head and “Keep Them Kisses Comin. Frequently compared to Country artist Alan Jackson, Campbell has been making his stamp on the country music scene. Campbell, a former keyboardist for both Luke Bryan and Tracy Byrd, has been using his turn as the star of the show to step out of his comfort zone stepping away from his instruments to work the stage solo all out of respect for his fans.

“That’s what the audience wants to see, so I challenged myself, and I’m getting more comfortable with it, Campbell said. “It’s easier to do with a hit song that everybody’s raising cain to. The country star, also a husband and father of two young girls, has no plans on slowing down anytime soon. “I’ve done some amazing things for a new artist, but I can’t slow down, he states, “I’ve got to keep full steam ahead. Campbell will be joined by country artist Eric Paslay whose songwriting credits include Jake Owen’s hit song “Barefoot Blue Jean Night and Donnie and Marie Osmond’s “The Good Life. Paslay’s self-titled debut album, just released this year, has spawned two hit singles “Friday Night and “Song About a Girl. Campbell will be performing live at

Scenes around the Fairgrounds TOP LEFT: Flower arrangements and other entries fill up tables at one of the Fairground buildings partially dedicated to the exhibits of the Wayne County 4-H Club, affiliated with the Penn State Extension. The judging for 4-H non-livestock entries is done on the first day of the Fair. TOP RIGHT: The group Hell Yo will have a return engagement at the Fair’s Small Stage, playing from 7–10 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5. Heather Weeks sings lead, while Mike Jordan plays guitar. BOTTOM RIGHT: Ian Ernst of Cochecton took part in the Woodsmen’s Competition at last year’s Fair. He has just finished the ax-throwing part of the competition, in which competitors test themselves in various ways against wood materials – and each other. This year, the Woodsmen’s Competition will take place on Saturday, August 2 at 2 p.m. It’s free, and it’s in front of the grandstand. ABOVE: These two turkey hens showed great curiosity, coming closer and closer to the photographer until they were virtually nose to beak. The gobblers, tough obviously domesticated, will be joined by more familiar farm animals of great variety to closely view and observe at different exhibits. FRANK RIZZO | DEMOCRAT

There are two main types of cakes, butter and foam (egg-leavened). Angel food is the classic example of a foam cake.
