So much to do at the Wayne County Fair And there’s always something new! BY ANTHONY MORGANO

ou can almost feel the excitement in the air as the summer season continues and the time is ripe for the Wayne County Fair. Celebrating the 154th anniversary of this special time, this year’s events will be packed full of fun for all ages. The Wayne County Fair was established in 1862, making this the 154th anniversary of an attraction that draws crowds to Honesdale from all over Pennsylvania and New York, and even some farther reaches of the country. Taking place this year from August 5–13, the Fair will once again feature a great lineup of entertainment, exhibits and thrills for the whole family. “The Wayne County Fair is the biggest event Wayne County has to offer,” said Roger Dirlam, the Fair’s president. “There’s something going on all the time.”

This year the entertainment will include up and coming country music star Kane Brown performing on August 6 as part of his “Dig Your Roots Tour,” as well as the tribute band “The Poets” on August 10, and a Wild West Show on August 12 featuring the Cowboy Hypnotist, Bull and Bronc Riding and especially the band Sour Bridges. Of course, many people come back to see their favorite events and won’t be disappointed this year with the ever-popular tractor pull and demolition derby. Other events scheduled include a diesel truck pull and harness racing. And harness racing has been expanded to four days this year. The Wayne County Fair also has huge agricultural ties, and the 4H judging and competitions, along with the livestock section of the fair, are some of the must-see areas. Another one of the highlights of the Wayne County Fair is the carnival mid-

way provided by Wade Shows, one of the largest carnival companies in the United States. Wade Shows will be bringing an allstar list of rides and attractions to the fair this year. The ride list has some of the most spectacular rides in the country, many that can only be found at the nation’s largest fairs. Coupled with an expanded kiddie land, there will be something for everyone. Take, for instance, the Giant Wheel. Towering 100 feet above the midway, its gondolas hold six passengers per car. The ride itself travels on four tractor trailers. Wade Shows owner Frank Zaitshik said the rides set the Wayne County Fair midway apart. “We are known for having some of the largest, most spectacular rides in the country, and we work with the fair each year to bring some incredible attractions to the midway of the Wayne County Fair.”

Other rides that can be found on the midway in 2016 include the Orbiter, the Extreme and the Mega Drop, at 130’, the largest portable drop tower in the country. ver take a selfie with a Tyrannosaurus Rex? You’ll have a chance to do just that at the Wayne County Fair! He roars and swishes his tail! He’s a new attraction this year – a realistic dinosaur that will walk around the park posing for you if you ask, making for many fun-filled photo opportunities. The baby T-Rex will roam the grounds and be stationary at specific times so you can find it – or it can find you. Fairgoers are highly encouraged to snap a selfie with the dinosaur. The attraction is presented by the National Entertainment Group. To see videos about the dinosaur, visit wildaboutdinosaurs.com. And then get up close and personal with a baby T-Rex at the Wayne County Fair.

here are several reasons why people attend fairs. Some enjoy the rides, others like the shows, but in addition to several events and performances, the Wayne County Fair will surely fulfill all attendees’ food desires. There will hot dogs, burgers, fries, sausage and pepper sandwiches, pretzel sandwiches, seafood, boneless wings, and much more. For those with a sweet tooth, there will also be cotton candy, sweet corn, funnel cakes, ice cream, cannolis, etc. Where else can you find all this food in one place? Not to mention an array of deep fried goodies you can only find once a year. These include deep fried Oreos, Reese’s Cups, pickles and more. So make sure when you attend the fair to bring an appetite.

Fair holding first-ever Wild West Day BY JOSEPH ABRAHAM

n Friday, August 12, the 154th Annual Wayne County Fair is holding its first ever “Wild West Day. The day features four Grandstand shows at 2, 4, 7 and 9 p.m. The first show will be performed twice – at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. – with Cowboy Hypnotist Don Warren. It is a comedy hypnosis stage show with Warren demonstrating some amazing hypnosis techniques with members of the audience. The second show, sponsored by Lester Log Homes, begins at 7 p.m. and features the Painted Pony Bronc and Bullriding Championship. Opening the show with a patriotic salute and pageantry, it is an out-ofthe-gate competition in saddle bronc and bullriding. Livestock athletes will be on hand and ready to unseat fellow contestants. The show is produced by the worldfamous Painted Pony Championship Rodeo from upstate New York. Tickets to the rodeo are not includ-

ed in the fair price of admission, and are $8 for adults, and $5 for children 12 and under. The day will be capped off by the Austin, Texas browngrass band Sour Bridges at 9 p.m., for a performance in the hometown of band members Matt and Bill Pucci. Sour Bridges’ music is described as a mix of folk, Americana, bluegrass and rock ‘n’ roll. Bill Pucci is enjoying the opportunity to come back home. “It’s all about the friendships we made in our hometown, Pucci said. “The fact that we can do what we do and come back home, it gives them a piece of our lives down here. “I think it’s pretty cool they are doing Wild West Day and picked us to be a part of it, Pucci continued. “I am excited about playing our music at a rodeo-style setting and doing it in front of old friends. Every time I get the band to come up there [Honesdale], they are really impressed by the hospitality and energy.

Wayne County Ag award goes to Chester L. Rickard Award to be given to family at opening of Wayne County Fair

he Wayne County Historical Society has given its “People Who Make a Difference in Wayne County Agriculture” award to Chester L. Rickard, 1908 – 1964. It is only the second time the award has been given posthumously. Rickard’s family will receive the award at the opening of the Wayne County Fair on Friday, August 5, at 6:30 p.m. on the small stage of the J. B. Park Farm Museum. Everyone is welcome to attend the ceremony honoring this man who contributed so much for Wayne County agriculture. Rickard’s life was devoted to dairy farming. He was forced to take over the operation of the family dairy while still in high school after the untimely death of his father. Despite the limited years of formal education and his own untimely death of a heart attack at the age of 56, Rickard was able to accomplish a significant amount in his lifetime. Realizing that the future of dairying

lay in registered Holsteins, he soon built a 100% Holstein herd. He also realized that artificial breeding, which was then in its infancy, was the best path to improving the entire Holstein breed. True to his always-looking-forward approach, Rickard was soon deeply involved in the artificial breeding industry in northeastern Pennsylvania. He was one of the founding members of the NEPA Breeding Cooperative located in Tunkhannock, and served on its board of directors for nearly 20 years. In addition to being a board member, he also served on the Holstein and Beef Sire selection committees, was cattle show superintendent, Vice President of the Board and member of the Executive Committee. In this capacity, Rickard represented NEPA in its move to consolidate with three neighboring cooperatives. Just before his death in 1964, he was elected President of the Board of NEPA Breeding Cooperative.

Rickard also organized the Wayne County chapter of the NEPA Artificial Breeders Cooperative, and served many years as its president. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Association, Wayne County Holstein Club, Wayne County Agricultural Society, was active in 4-H and served as club leader during the time his four children participated in 4-H dairy activities. Rickard and his children participated yearly in Wayne County Fair dairy shows and were the proud winners of many blue ribbons, thanks to the great improvements the artificial breeding program made possible for the cattle in the family herd. In 1947, Rickard was honored by being named a Master Farmer. In 1952, he was named to the Board of Directors of the Wayne County Bank and Trust Co. We salute Chester L. Rickard for being a man devoted to his family and
